Title: Classic Dirt 7
Post by: DR on June 13, 2010, 05:48:10 pm
Just got home from the best Classic Dirt I've been to yet! Something like 450 riders and a zillion bikes, almost too much to comprehend 8) great weather, great people, great tracks, great entertainment and a great time! I've a few pics..very few sadly as I was once again just far too busy riding ;D will post the pics a little later when I can find my camera ::) A special thanks to the VMX guys for once again hosting what could near be the 'best' vintage dirtbike event worldwide. It would take something of monumental proportions to top it! Great to meet Hoony and special thanks to Rob 'Shoey' for the Husky Central tee shirt! Almost has me thinking a Husky wouldn't be a bad future proposition ;) cheers and again thanks to all who made it possible!

Yes really was a great event.

Shoey as usual turned it on and made us all welcome, this bloke is just so good for VMX!!!!

Ken and AJ put on again the best event, ablely supported by Dave, peter and all the girls and boys at the SCMCC.

Great tracks

Great fun

Great people

400 day licences sold so a lot of one time a year people making the event what it was. A hugh success.

Thanks to all the people who came over to meet me over the weekend

Like Doc said great to meet up with Hoony, we is the same in person as he is on the forum.

Can't sign off without thanking Suzuki for their big effort as usual.

where to start?

Firstly an absolutely huge thanks to those who put this event on. Everyone from the club guys to the mag guys and all in between, tireless efforts paid off in what would have to be the best dirt bike event in the world. I cannot imagine how you would go about improving it.

The tracks were perfect, the camping facilities were first class, the schedule ran like clockwork, and the whole vibe of the place was just fantastic.

It was great to catch up with all the guys I met last year. Amazing how many people you remember, and vice versa, even though you've only met them once before and 12 mths earlier.

A big thanks to DJ for letting me loose on the Noguchi, I felt guilty for riding it so much, but it was too much fun to hand back ;D

Also thanks to Firko and the crew for the Marguerita's and a massive thanks to his good mate Jonesy for letting me ride his unrestored original Metisse! Again, I was feeling rather guilty for doing lap after lap on it, but it was so easy to ride, and the power was so addictive, I just didn't want to hand it back. It's certainly put my BSA project on the priority list.

I'll probably remember more stuff later, but again thanks to all involved for a great event.

A couple of the funnier moments that come to mind...

The 40 yr old Virgin (YZ250H) takes the Disco Ball (fully restored YZ250H) out for it's maiden spin, and comes back with gnashing teeth and tears in his eyes cause the gearbox is stuffed and won't get out of first gear. After some deliberation, the bike is parked for a while and he goes for a ride on some other stuff.

So Big Ted strolls over, and has a quick squizz at the gear lever, and with an accompanying stream of insults directed at the aformentioned 40yr old virgin, points out that he has the gear lever mounted so high on the splines that it's hitting the front sprocket cover ::) ;D and hey presto the gearbox is fixed!!

Then there was Hoony, who was so frightened that Macca and Bahnsy would get him to pissed to ride the next day, that he fled the compound on Saturday night to sleep at his digs offsite.

Some half drunk twit with his old winter woolly gloves clenched between his teeth while taking a leak, managed to drop one of them in the portaloo whole trying to zip up and talk to TonyB in the next loo ;D lucky the weeing had stopped by then :D

I can not remember all of Popeye's injuries but,
A broken collar bone, broken ribs, bruised liver..........
But with all that he was talking to others on his mobile phone from the hospital.

My son ran into our tent and told us that he had just seen Popeye have a really bad getoff.

Get well soon mate.

My son told me that Popeye flew over Drunks Hill jump and cleared this step up double. While in the air the sidcar corkscrewed and when it hit the ground well lets say that it had rotated so far there was no bringing it back.

There was another fellow that got concussion while attempting the tabletop jump down the back of the main track.
Someone hit his bike from behind and sent him flying.
The whole back end on this chaps bike was bent.

Does anyone know how he is doing?

a special thanks indeed to all who contributed thier efforts to the making of this event.
so lucky theres so much space for camping at this event and the hot showers really make it a treat.
had a few rides on some great bikes {thanks heaps boys, you know who you are ;)} and as always it was great to catch up with the many faces/characters that make up this sport and to meet a few new ones.
picked up and dropped off Tony T at/from the airport and he he really seemed to enjoy his classic dirt experience. but no bike Tony? :D maybe next time hey.
Some half drunk twit with his old winter woolly gloves clenched between his teeth while taking a leak, managed to drop one of them in the portaloo whole trying to zip up and talk to TonyB in the next loo ;D lucky the weeing had stopped by then :D

Remarkable 8). Lots of interesting detail there and some unusual ways of addressing some design detail.

Do you know if it is a 'period' home made, a 'period' replica or a more recent brainstorm.

Hi MX250,
The fellow that was owned by the Norton told me that it was modelled after an original and his mate had an original but did not bring it to CD7. A well know frame builder did make all the parts required. I did not ask when it was built but I will post some images to show the detail and craftsmanship that went into it.
Even the gears were made.
The engine was the only Norton thing I believe.

the best laugh I've had since was when I got home last night and opened up the Suzuki "shirt" I won at the trivia night, and it turned out to be a very neat pair of overalls that wouldn't look out of place on one of Dr Evil's henchmen. Wish I'd opened it up when they were being handed out, all the recipients would've made for a great group photo.

What can I say that hasn't been said. I can't remember going to any event that had such a good feel to it in such a good location.
Rarely did I walk past anyone and not get a greeting of some sort.
Special mentions need to go to everyone at Husky Central (especially Shoey) for the extraordinary hospitality and generousity in looking after me with bed and board for the weekend, (and for not throwing a boot at me during the night...... I'm thinking I might not be so lucky next year......  :-\ ) Vandy for going above and beyond the call of duty to get me to and from the airport, Klub Kevlar for the hospitality and hangovers, VMX42 for the little 'gift' (it's on the office wall already!) the organising club for a sensation job and tireless work (even the lady that kicked me and the guy from Trailzone out of the track area despite having done all the paperwork etc and already having been out there for 2 3/4 days  :D ) all the guys that offered me bikes to ride (there was a lot!), the VMX team, caterers and everyone else that I got to meet and chat with over the weekend.
A big mention also needs to go to all those that volunteered for flaggy duties and other official positions.
Well done to one and all!  ;D

P.S. I'll still start laughing when I think of "incest".............  :D :D :D    Don't ask.....................

It was my first time at a Classic Dirt event and I really enjoyed it, I totally enjoyed the sight and sound in particular of all the big bore 2 strokes tearing around, music to my ears  ;D, but on a more sour note , my mates generator was pinched sometime saturday night, there's one low life scumbag in every crowd it seems >:(

Well just got home this arvo, and it was really great to meet all the forum members that i could find, all great people one and all, shame i could not spend to much time with all as there was so much to take in.

what a blast, i have been buzzing all day. I managed lots of rides on my Bike (Thanks Macca & Mark for taking it up) as well a test ride on the suzuki both days. was even keen to Ride Shane's generous offer of his CR480 RD but ran out of time and i was stuffed by this stage too.

i was torn between the piss up on Sat night or getting a bed that night and riding the next day, Macca's late pages on the PA were bloody funny. That track is primo fun, and i absolutely loved the Step up (Drunks) and the big hill jump over the back towards the pit, i was like a dog with 2 dicks, it was that much fun. as always at every CD i have been to, the range and quality of the bikes always amazes me.

i am thinking about making the long Haul for the Conondale Classic next year if you guys can give me dates/info when they are available, i want to ride the whole track now.

i can say that this track is now my # 1 Favorite in Oz.

I'm thinking about compiling a commemorative booklet on the event ... would be A4, colour, maybe 60 pages.  Would take about three months ...

What an awesome weekend!!!!!!!    Thanks to all of 500-odd people there.   A special thanks to Mark Christopher, Bahnsy, Macca and Hoony for their hospitality.   And Thanks Daryl and Greg for the extraordinary trip down memory lane of Pursangs, the Floods and 70s Vic MX memories.   Insane fun!

Highlights - the family of Big Bill, the haul from drunks hill jump down into first turn at fig tree, haybales and fires at bar, coffee van, showers, riders briefings ... actually, too many things to list.

And Gigantor and Dennis D - you guys are NUTS!

Paul, While i was scrutineering the disco bike i also let the ace mechanic owner know that he installed the locking tab on his chain the wrong way around.
So i guess as i saw that and we all saw his dreadful gearbox woes and nobody actually saw your head in the shitter he gets to keep the trophy for another year. All in favour I. I. I. I.

Thanks again Ali & Steve, you have been busy indeed putting that together. thanks for the bed and to Steve for helping me find it-I must have bumped my head when Popeye and I crashed.
That's a great shot of the Brad with all 3 wheels off the deck-one for the album for sure and he acquited himself well on the chair-much to his 'fan clubs' delight.
Geoff Udy did very well also since he hadn't been on one for twenty odd years, but the clincher for me was the lap with Roger Harvey, what a great laugh and what a sport he was-I can't imagine what he thought when he got to the top of the big downhill over the back but it was fantastic and I thank him very much for having a go.
Cheers all.

Gday all,
As this was the first cd i have ridden in i would like to thank the who's who that organized everything connected to the event!!! you are the ones that made so many people happy. The memories the bikes bought back were priceless and that wonderful smell of the mighty 2 strokes but the stand out for me were all of the people that helped a newby on an old husky, nothing was to much trouble for anyone that i asked.
 :o I learned a few thinks too,
 # Don't drink red wine with Euro Bikes or 500evo you wont win they will beat you with experience  :P :'(
 # Don't tell Noel Harker that huskies are better than Maico's  :D ;D
 # Don't get all excited and take off on the enduro loop with out putting fuel in your bike  :o
I had the best time i have had in years i was so sore when i got home i just loosened the tie downs and flopped on the lounge. Where is it on next year or is it to soon to ask?
                                Thanks Again!

Just got home at 6pm tonight. Very long drive 3900 klm's all up but well worth it. What a great event. We took 2 non VMX followers with us and they had a ball the same as we did. One is even talking about getting a VMX bike to restore. I met lots of freindly and interesting people over the weekend and was able to put some faces to forum names. Had a great time on Saturday night with Doggy Digger, Number 8 and D.D. Congrates to all and sundry who had any input in organising or running this fantastic 3 days.
Thanks again.

Just got back from CD7 after a lazy two day drive home (didn't get a speeding ticket this year!). Once again I was blown away with the amazing organisational ability of the SCMCC, the VMX fellas Ken, Alistair and Jeff and even the lovely ladies from the local P&C in the canteen. The venue was once again in better condition than my neighbors front yard and both tracks even better than expectations. Even though I was carrying more than my usual compliment of body damage I managed to drop by many of the camps and catch up with old acquaintances and meet many new friends.
Here are a few of my memories, rattled off as they come to me........................

* Once again Paul Chippendale did a great job setting up the Kevlar Kompound, making it so easy for us once we got there.
His Maicos were in their usual pristine condition and it was a no brainer presenting him with the Klub Kevlar Bling Award. If anybody needs a clue on setting Maicos up correctly, just have a looky at Pauls bikes. Andrew Bailey was his usual rapid self on board them and I've managed to talk Paul into bringing both Andrew and the Maicos to Griffith for the VDT Nats which will shake up the over 50 fields a tad.

* It was fantastic accepting Tony T into the realms of Klub Kevlar and Club Husky.....He fitted in as if he'd been with us all along. I can't wait to see the thousands of shots he must have taken. Ditto our old mate Billy Forsyth. The old bugger was photographing everything that moved and some things that didn't like my Cheney!

* The standard of bikes is beyond anyones expectations of a few years ago. Everywhere I went I'd see a new standard in bling. There'll be no problem finding feature bikes for VMX, way into the future.

* The shift in demographics of the sport was especially noticeable this year. The increasing numbers of pre '85 bikes and the less noticable presence of pre '75 and pre '65 bikes stood out to me. Maybe it was that the pre '75 numbers remained the same but they were made to appear fewer by the increased long travel presence? It'd be interesting to see a breakdown of the actual bike division numbers.

*The pot of Lan Choo and fresh Arnotts Iced Vo-Vo's were in waiting all weekend for Ji-Gantors visit to the Kompound and to accept his dinner invitation for Saturday evenings  Gala Husky dinner banquet. The "Has anyone seen Ji ?" mantra rang through our corner of the valley all weekend. Sadly the Iced Vo-Vo's came home unopened and I'm now devouring a couple with my morning Smoko Hazlenut Skinny Latte'. I donated the left over Lan-Choo to Klub Kevlar Grand Poo bah and tea connoisseur Frank Stanborough. Where were you Ji, I was especially looking forward to our chat?

* Speaking of Frank, the old fella was my travel partner for the trip north to give me a chance to interview him for next issues VMX feature on his Manx Norton/Metisse. By the time I'd arrived at CD7 I had an even bigger admiration for the old fella. His contributions to our sport ranged from racing the first RT1MX in the country through to being the head of Kawasaki's Mr Motocross team and nurturing Graeme Smythe's SR Kawasaki's in 1975 right up to being the workshop genius behind the Australian Team Honda superbike and GP bikes of the seventies/eighties. He'd been building his latest creation, the trick little 250cc NSU Sportmax powered Greeves pre 65 bike since CD6 and he was stoked that it got a lot of attention. An unfortunate broken gearbox during its test run ended any on track action but the attention the bike got from the punters made it worthwhile for the old fella. It was too cool seeing him boppin' away the bands mosh pit on Saturday night calling out for them to play Santana and Jethro Tull and to "crank it up". Not too shabby for a '74 year old who almost died of prostate cancer a couple of years ago.

*The look on Mainlines face after his ride on Jonesys Weslake Metisse was great. It brought home the message that pre '65 bikes aren't the evil, heavy olld shitboxes that many of the younger vintage riders assume they are. Once you ride one they're very addictive and there's nothing cooler.

*Nice seeing Alison and Steve over from WA. Alison seemed to fall in love with Jonesys 250 American Eagle, 'Roger Ramjet', which we gave the "Best Example of a Really, Really Bad Bike" award.

*I fell in love with Husky Pete's 'Gold Nugget' CR500 Silver Bullet Husky converted over to Enduro trim. I'd hate to be stuck on a gnarly hill on the 60hp monster but I reckon it'd be a cool fire trailer.
More a bit later as they come to me.....I have to unload the car now that it's warmed up a tad.

It was fantastic accepting Tony T into the realms of Klub Kevlar and Club Husky.....He fitted in as if he'd been with us all along.

The pleasure was all mine, Uncle.  ;D
I approached the weekend in Husky Central and the Kompound the same way you would face any other wild animal. Show no fear and maintain eye contact.  :D :D
Maybe I did show some fear when faced with my first "little green cup". But after 4 or so, they were quite tasty.  ;D

I'm uploading photos as we speak (remember to grab one or two, as all money goes to Magoo's family, not just the 'proceeds'.)

I can't get the buggers to upload to Flickr, Photbucket etc for some reason though. Any I.T. (not Yamaha) smart guys out there with an answer???? Send me a pm if you've got any ideas rather than clutter this thread.  Thanks.

We arrived at Conondale at 7.30am Friday morning and proceeded to camp ground 2 where we were camped last year.
While erecting our tent Shoey dropped by to say hello, Shoey also gave me a T shirt and extended his offer to join him on Saturday night at Husky Central. I looked forward to spending some quality time with Shoey and all those other great people at Husky Central.
Like most on Saturday all I did was ride the best track in Australia.
I also saw Geoff Ballard not finish the legends lap so I went over and lent a hand to fix his Maico.
Saturday evening after a shower I walked over to Geoff's RV to see how the bike went after the repair but stopped along the way to help change a tyre for people I did not know nor could see very well. Eventually I got to Geoff's RV and was invited to sit and talk with some really interesting fellows. After a bag of peanuts and cornchips my son turned up and informed me that my wife was non to happy with me due to my dinner was getting cold. I bid good bye to Geoff and friends and made my way back to my camp.
Mrs Gantor was non-to-happy and it took some time after my dinner before the dust settled down by that time it was to late to go anywhere.

I totally apologies to one of the sports greatest gentleman, Shoey. Sorry mate if there is anything I can do for you just ask.

Firko, as to our little chat, well mate as you know we all set out to do heaps of stuff at these CD's but get few of them done. I spoke to so many people that I knew and even more I didn't,
I got to speak face to face with Doggy Digger, Hooney, VMX247, Brad Lewis.............................................
I wonder how many CD's it will take to meet everyone?

Tight nuts

Hey Ji

No apology neccessary as i only managed to complete less than 60% of my target goal for the event.

We hope you enjoy our event tee shirt.

I have received 31 requests for this event tee shirt since yesterday morning. We have considered the requests and will not be running another batch.
It sort of defeats the purpose of limited edition.

Damn! Here I am at work reading everyone's stories and checking out the photos and reliving the weekend.

I don't know what I can add to what's already been said - that has to have been about the best Classic Dirt yet. For me, CD1 (or CD2000 as it was) will remain the best - simply because it was the first. I had never been to such a thing and to be confronted by acres of ground littered with bikes, parts and people the like of which I hadn't seen for years was like being a kid let loose in a toy shop. Combined with superb weather, and well... it was just beyond description.

However, this year's event was every bit as good. Superb location, brilliant weather, fantastic tracks, and lots of people and bikes. How good was it?

This year I tried to get around and see things and people I hadn't managed to last year, so I went off to watch some of the riding on the two tracks from different viewing locations. What a blast seeing all the different bikes being put through their paces. Including some pretty fast people on the Pre 75 track! I went down to the trials sections and watched for a bit as well as checked out a mate's efforts on his TY175, and followed that up with a few minutes watching the enduro guys heading off into the mulga.

A decent wander through the camping ground and how many tents and bikes are there? I couldn't believe the size of it all. And enduro bikes. They were everywhere, it was like being at an enduro back in the early 80s.

I caught up with quite a few forum regulars and finally met Brent from the NT. He even let me take his TM125 for a spin, although I failed to get out on his TT500. Next time. Speaking of riding OP's bikes, I was offered a lot of rides but didn't manage to take up on anywhere near all of them. There just isn't enough time!

This year being in good health meant I got to ride the big track at a decent pace and I loved it. My dislike of jumps meant I didn't clear Drunks, but the rest of the track was brilliant. Who couldn't love the downhill blast after drunks, or that squirt up the hill followed by the neat drop off? Or that magic sweeper into the table top before the last big jump? WFO on a 125 through there is just a ball!

The poor old 75 RM125 was well outgunned though - I lost count of the number of times guys on Evo and Pre 85 Open Classers brake checked me, blockpassed me, or just plain roosted the crap out of me. One guy in particular on a KX500 nearly wore the little RM when he decided to take me on the inside into a tight corner, but I saved the day by simply running over the berm and then flailing wildly to stay upright and get back onto the track. Some may say that's just my normal riding style, but I kept it shiny side up, OK?

I could be wrong, but there didn't appear to be too many 1975 or older bikes out on that track. A few, especially someone going way too fast on an old Elsinore of some description, but not many at all. It was Evo/pre 85 city, just like Firko reckons.

Unlike last year, Me and Twisty decided to make it more than just an old dirtbike weekend, so we stayed offsite at some cabins down the road and enjoyed ourselves doing the breakfast in Maleny thing as well as checking out Kenilworth etc. Can't remember the place's name, but the coffee shop in Malenay overlooking the main drag was a great place to sit in the sun and watch the punters streaming through town on their way to the track.

Overall, just the best weekend. Even the long drive there andn back went by in a bit of a blur.

Thanks to all the usual people - the VMX guys, the SCMCC, the people from the P&C, and anyone else involved in organising and running the show. You did yourselves proud.

I'll post up a few photos of my own when I get a chance.

Let's do it again next year!

And Graeme,
Don't forget to take a pat on the back for yourself. OzVMX plays such a significant roll in maintaining the momentum of this great pass-time. If it wasn't for you, VMX wouldn't be as active in Aust as it is.

Loving the memories/photos of CD7 men,
Highlights so far:
1)Sir Bradalot wearing my old Suzuki JT racing jersey?? as sold to  Dodgee?? or is it a  coincidence?. Brad you look so sharp in yellow mate.
2)Seeing my good mate and star of Underbelly Kings Cross; Marty O'Show Milton in frame lapping up some CD action.

What I want to know is did anyone challenge the rental car rally cross record from the Camden Golf Club??

Absolutely pissed I didn't go,next year I am definitely going to be there!!!

Last year was awesome.....this year the bar was 3 notches higher.....worse thing is having to wait another year to do it again.....best tracks, best event, best weather, best people and I like alot of people didnt get to cross many things off the "to do" list......maybe 4 days is needed....like I said last year, it needs to be a week.....come on fellas....how big can this get?. Thanks to all the organisers and hard workers...I "dip me hats to ya all"....cheers John. (and man am I looking forward to a good, long nights sleep).

I also would like to praise Graeme .M, it has been 20 years from the first vintage day in Victoria, and as it has progressed each year by devoted men and women wheather lap scoring, club activities, corner stewarts to the very first hand written newsletter and program, posters, then from great ideas created by a dream, a Magazine, like Classic dirt bike market to VMX world wide to ozvmx world wide, the computor has bought all of us closer to the making of what l call the holy grail ( friendship, comradship.) I raise my class to Vintage Motorcross, trials, speedway, sidecars, roadracing, Vinenduro. and most all the creation that was moulded in the shed from man and machine, and the stubby.
Long live oz/vmx as one  cheers david#46.

While I am here, thanks to Mark (Huskyevo500) for my first ride on a Husky auto.It was a heap of fun.
Also thanks to Dave Tanner for letting me ride my first works and semi works bike in the RN400 and RH250. Fan bloody tastic!
Also thanks to Vaughan for pestering me to have a run on a chair. I'd do it again.

Nice tits. ;D

I wish more riders would dress accordingly. Modern gear with its crap colours and graphics looks way wrong on a vintage bike. It's not as if you can't buy new vintage appropriate stuff too. Metro and plenty of other makers sell good gear.If Jonesy and Jolley can do it, anyone can......

I'm with you on that one. In fact, at the Harrow Vinduro I'm sponsoring an award the the most period correct rider/ bike/ tow vehicle/ casual clothes / music played in the car etc etc etc.  ;D

I love how they do it at Goodwood. You're not allowed in the paddock (even as a spectator) if you're not dressed appropriately.

I'm not suggesting we go that far, but I'd like to see the sport go in that direction, particularly at non-competitive events like Classic Dirt.

Helmets are the big issue for me, why don't they just make 'em plain colours anymore?? Shirts and pants you can get and black boots look ok even if more modern, but helmets with flames and shit just look all wrong to me.

Your spot on guys with the riding gear thing. To me thats a huge part of the whole vintage thing. I've got some black nylons (pants!) Black AXO boots and some old school gloves (Metro). I even had some Martini shirts made up. Plenty of modern protective gear under it though! Helmets are a worry. I looked around and found something reasonably subdued but Im still not happy with it. Another thing wear a kidney belt (holds ya guts in!) I recckon Tony T's on to something with the recognition thing. Maybe at CD7 people could be encouraged (with free beer)to go for the nostalgia look. Yours truly from the 70's Jerry

Looks like a good time was had by all! I'm with eml about the period gear but I'm glad jerry cleared it up about his black pants. I didn't want to think about his lacy black 'smalls'!    I get all keen when i see those great pics showing what looked like a really good vintage friendly scrambles track, and great looking period machinery like that Ducati, but I know what happens when I get the bit between my teeth so there will be no more of me riding other than short circuit I mean dirt track. With the period gear, i still use my original one piece Omodies leathers but I need to cover my old Merrylands colour patch with body armour since I cracked a rib a while back at Nepean.  cheers wally.

I concur, the new riding gear looks out of place on the older bikes. Fortunately I kept all my old stuff, boots, leathers, jerseys etc and the best part, it all still fits! ;D the jersey (doc original), gloves and helmet are relatively new but still keeping with in the theme of things ;)

I got on to some plain race jerseys but they only come in red/black arms, white/blue-black arms or a grey/black arms.
They are very good to ride in though and soak up the sweat well and can be screen printed as we have done.
As for helmets, the best I could think of was those helmet covers the youngsters had a few years back, similar to what speedway riders use to show which team they're on, however the supplier only had a few left and they were too abstract as well.
I would just buy a plain helmet but the only one available was a Shoei for over a grand!!

I'm about to shoot a couple of coats of plain silver basecoat topped by clear pearl  on one of my flashy helmets, an MR2. I just can't look at the hideous graphics any longer. I don't mind the graphics on my Bell Moto7 so I'll keep that for days when too much colour ain't enough.
As far as nylons...I have a pair of Metro Maico nylons with a huge selection of Maico and Wheelsmith Jerseys. For the other bikes, I bought a pair of plain black Italian nylons and have a very cool London Harlequins Rugby Jersey awaiting my body repairs which should hopefully allow me to cut a few laps. My Fox modern gear will go nowhere near my vintage bikes.

Firko, I'm not too sure about adding colour over modern helmets as thay have alot of polymers that might react to overcoats???? I will check it out before I spray anything.

"Thread hijack warning"
I just spoke to the body shop next door and the foreman tells me that to paint a modern helmet is o.k.He is a long time BMXer and repaints all his stuff-retro as well. he was surprised that we don't have to wear full faces as they do in his sport-no Jofa allowed.
He said so long as you don't cut through the top coat of the actual helmet case you'll be fine.
All Troy Lee design helmets are white base coat when he starts and he paints over them.

I reckon a base of standard paint followed by an arted version of a bolt on jaw guard in a contrasting colour to match the peak should look almost retro enough if done well. I'll have to follow that up.

sorry gents - haven't joined the thread because I was stuck out west last weekend.  However to do a small hijack - email Red Alert on this forum - he is one of the best air brush guys in Australia and really knows his shit about painting helmets - which is the best way to go.  Nice guy - will let you know what can and can't be done.  But I have also searched for plain colour helmets and they seem to be making a come back with some of the cheaper brands like THH etc???  I thought it was easy enough to find white ones also for "pimping" suitably later?

Arai are fibreglass or a fibreglass composite and are probably okay. I would still check. The various other 'plastics' I would double and triple check.

And that just the shell. You still have to worry about protecting the poly liner and comfort liner from solvents.

Jeremy McGrath always had the best helmets.
When he was riding he had "Show Time" sprayed on the back of his helmet and now he is semi retired it says "Part Time"

A helmet is safety equipment so I would not touch it until I knew exactly what would happy if I used certain chemicals.

Air brush is a bit like TIG welding it take some time to master.
I have used cheap Chinese guns and expensive ones and found very little difference.

I make these fly fishing poppers, the body is about 15mm long. I air brush them with enamel.
Most of these poppers end up as collectors items because they are just to good to use.

This is a bad example - I can see the way that the CT1 has carved him up in this pic.
Now, we all know that Brad can ride out of sight on a dark night, but in this case he clearly had inferior machinery and didn't stand a chance.

You're quite right there Nathan, that little Yammie was absolutely flying. The guy on that thing - man, he IS the man. Later in the pits I got to meet him and even (gasp) talk to him. He was pretty casual about it all. Apparently he's a factory rider who was undercover on the weekend. He even let me sit on the CT and make revving noises. It's such a hot bike that one.

Wish I could ride like that tho...

My guess is that he is hoping all the nuts on your bike stay nice and tight (and you just know the nuts on Ji's bike are nylocks freshly plated sourced from catalogued shelves safety wired and torqued up to the correct tension phew!) So I tend to think it's Ji's quaint way of wishing you all the best OR he's describing how your testicles may be feeling on the start line. Tight lines Jerry

Speaking of nuts, did anyone get a good shot of BVB and I on the Wasp-or were they all laughing too hard?
He really loved the left right before drunks as it was slippy enough to get the biatch sideways a bit.

That'd be Mike Wellers Metisse.......Dirtrumpy here on the forum.

cheers 5 minutes on a search & read of Dirtrumpy and its all there,
nothing secret here  ;)  ;D

$12K, which is a fair estimate of the cost to build my Pat French Framed Triumph 650 unit Metisse, is by no meas a budget bike.
The first 4 years of its life saw it fully registered and used as everyday transport with weekends spent off in the dirt heading west with overnight trips staying in remote bush pubs, and what a blast it was.
Last year I plonked it on the start line at Clarence with the Heaven boys, and what an even bigger blast that was.
Next month the bike will, for the first time, be used on the Nepean dirt track.
When Im too old to ride it round a track, back on the road it goes on full registration.

"Thread hijack warning"
BMXer and repaints all his stuff-retro as well. he was surprised that we don't have to wear full faces as they do in his sport-no Jofa allowed.
colour to match the peak should look almost retro

RETRO RETRO

Washougal Lucas Oil AMA MX National to go Retro
For three decades, the Pacific Northwest has been a staple of American motocross and to celebrate the 30 years of hosting an AMA-sanctioned outdoor national, Washougal Motocross Park and MX Sports Pro Racing will stage the inaugural retro-themed event at the famed Southern Washington track.
As the original action sport, motocross has become one of the fastest growing forms of motorsport in the country and for nearly 40 years, American motocross has been the stage for epic races and even greater memories. Throughout that weekend, vintage will be the name of the game at Washougal when the Lucas Oils AMA Motocross Championship hits town.
Teams and riders will be in the retro spirit with vintage plastics adorning the motorcycles and "old-school" gear featuring the colors and patterns of decades past.
"There isn't a better way to celebrate 30 years of Washougal Motocross than to host a retro national," said Washougal Motocross Park's Brian Barnes. "This race has such a strong history that the opportunity for the stars and teams of today to pay homage to the legends of the past was simply too good to pass up."

It will be interesting to see if there is a renaisance of the older colours and kit after this event just as there is with girly fashion which seems to go round and round in ever smaller circles, just to get the missus/daughter to buy the "latest fash" .
I fear the come back of the pastle colours from when we in Europe though.
