It's interesting when you talk to people about famous folk theyv'e met. I'll start Sean Connery, Paul Keating (and his wife) Allan Moffat,Peter Schoene. Haven't met Firko yet! Jerry
-
Well I've met Firko so take that Jerry! ;D and Joel Robert, Greg Hansford, Ivan Mauger, Olle Olsen and probably a few others I can't think of off hand but they're not exactly what I'd call famous outside of the motorcycling fraternity.

I've sold sporting goods to HG Nelson (yes, really).
Several B-grade sporting celebrities went to my school: Jake Spooner, Troy Sachs, Shannon Taylor, Sandy someone (she won a world championship, but I'm too lazy to google her surname).
And Bruce Samazan who was a B-grade actor (although he was plain old Bruce Morrison when he was at school).
Without fail, they were unrepentant arseholes. Indeed, years after he'd left school, one of them allegedly ;) used to beat up his shcool-age girlfriend when they were living in a caravan park...
The other famous people I've met (Firko, TM Bill and Uncle Lozza) are good blokes, though.
-
The other famous people I've met (Firko, TM Bill and Uncle Lozza) are good blokes, though.
Though in my case not so famous ;D
I said hello to Mick Jagger, who said Hello back. Don't know if that counts as 'met'?
-
Contact was made Lozza. That counts when your name dropping!

This is a camp fire yarn that I allways bring out and swear by, it was 1980 something - It was a Saturday night and I was driving out of Fremantle in my bright red XB GT falcon ute. There were two hitch hikers on the side of the main drag out of Freo and at a glance they inticed me to put my newly fitted four wheel disc brakes to their test. When I pulled up to them, I asked where they were going to which they replied " Rockingham to a party" I glady offered them a ride - but they both had to sit on the racing bucket seat on the passengers side. One was a red head with frizzy hair, the other a brunette. Even though my ute was an auto I had to do manual gear changes because........... I had to! I made some small talk and got back that they were from NSW and that one was a dancer the other an actress. Anyway I dropped them off but the next time I saw the red head she was in a movie called days of thunder with that couch jumping weirdo - whats his name? - true story.
-
sorry its hard enuff to type letalone look for all the other bits in between :D.ill try harder next time ;Dcheers gary

Alan Lancaster. Met him, been to his place. Studio above the garage. My mum was good friends with his wife.
I met royalty once. I met a queen when I was down the cross!
Met THE holeshot buddy. A legend in his own pony tail! He also kept telling me the same thing. Over and over and over......

A mate and myself were standing at the bar of a restuarant in Cowes, Phillip Island ordering 8 VB stubbies when the guy next to us said to the bar girl "God Damm change my order, make mine one of them as well cause they must be good if they are ordering eight of them". It was Kenny Roberts Snr. He told me later he enjoyed it and had several more before the night was finished. Nice guy.

I hope you've had all the 'tests'............. one can only imagine where this Firko bloke has been............. :-\

-
one can only imagine where this Firko bloke has been
I've been in the shed working on Firkos Cheney actually Tony ;).
Besides the usual subjects to do with motor racing, I've had fleeting moments with B grade celebrity, such as............
*Played in a darts tournament against a team comprising of Kim Gardner (Ashton,Gardner and Dyke bass player), Jackie Lomax (first solo performer signed by Apple records) and Ray Cooper (Elton Johns percussionist)
*Got hopelessly drunk with, B grade Swedish actor Bo Swenson, star of B grade moviie, 'Walking Tall'. A good campfire story for CD7, too long to relate here.
*Briefly dated Jim Weinerts first wife Cathy (one date actually, we worked together)
*Sat next to Les Pillet at school, who later murdered his parents. He was a very weird and twisted boy, even at 15.
*Sat next to Steve Marriot (Small Faces and Humble Pie lead singer on an LA-NY flight, talked anything but music and didn't even realise who he was until the landing buzzer came on. He was a really nice bloke and dead within a fortnight.
*Drive Firkos 90 year old mother to her regular monday Ti Chi class.
*Rivalled All Black legend Murray Mexted for the attention of a stunning black South African babe at a party and I won.
*Watched Michael Caine and Rod Stewart get pissed on half price Watneys Red Barrel pints at the Kings Head Pub in Santa Monica, LA in 1977. My missus buggered their faux working class slumming it vibe by asking Rod for his autograph and was not so politely told to "fi*k off darling, we're off duty". She threw our copy of 'Every Picture Tells a Story'
in the garbage when we got home.

and not a single comment re your alleged sleeping around Firko!
-
Another America close encounter...When I was living in Lakewood, California, Michelle Pfeiffer was a check out chick at my local Alpha-Beta supermarket. Naturally I always took her line. She was drop dead stunning but a Japanese American girl working with her named Mavis left 'Shelly' in the dust for good looks. Unfortunately Mavis had a liking for Bolivian Marching Powder and went sour pretty soon after. Michelle however became Miss Long Beach and the rest is history.
and not a single comment re your alleged sleeping around Firko
Old footy saying. What happens on tour, stays on tour. ;D

Silvester Stallone, 1988 - I did a photo shoot with him for a mag
Henry Reynolds, 2001 - Historian and Aboriginal activist
Rex Staten, Pietermaritzburg, RSA, April 1982 - at a local motocross. I didn't talk to him - we just eyed each other off, and I thought how much this nasty looking thug looks like the USA guy (but that it could not possibly be him. No way ... not way down here) I still curse that day for missing such an autograph
Frank Black, March, 2010 - Manly Corso. Lead singer for The Pixies ... who declined to have a coffee with me. I nearly spewed on him, I was so excited. (My all-time fave band)
Jaroslav Falta, 2008 - Manly Corso. But he doesn't speak any English, so I talked to Ken
Kork Ballington, 1981 - Durban. He came down to hotel foyer and gave me an autograph
Phillip Adams, 1998 - Radio National and The Australian ... at Sydney Library
Wayne Gardner, 1989 - did a photo shoot with him at Calder practice day. It was around October, and he was champ
Alan Cathcart, 2010 - shared a hotel for weekend with him at HBBB. I can still can hardly walk ...
Ivan Miller, 1975 - Wonthaggi, Vic Titles. I was thrilled to bits and in nervous. Got my first MX autograph. (What a L.E.G.E.N.D.)
Paul Kelly, 1992 - cos I shared a flat in St Kilda with one of his cousins from SA
Kevin Magee, 1989 - at Phillip Isle for inaugural GP. I did a photo for mag, with him
Vince Jones, 1990 - cos I was sharing a flat with his sound technician in St Kilda
John Seale, 2001 - Academy award for cinematography, cos he lives next door to my mum-in-law on Pittwater
Rod Hunwick, 2010 - at Deux Ex Machina. He built the Hunwick Hallam superbike
Michael Leunig, 1990s to 2002 - Melb Age's cartoonist. Got to know him via local cafe hangout in St Kilda
Bill Leak, 1997 - The Australian's cartoonist. Flew up from melb to see a small seminar he did on cartooning. This meeting changed my life, and led to me moving to NSW for good, six months later
Mark Firkin, 2010 - there was a big crowd gathered around him at Speedway, HBBB. (Turns out they were trying to get a sqizz at the Vincent sliders)
PS: I'll have my MX autograph book with me at CD7. I started it at a Brit national in 1981 (John Banks, Bill Butchka, Noyce, etc) ... and am still collecting the occasional monicker to this day. It has approx 100 names in it ... one per page, with clippings glued in (If anyone wants a look, you are most welcome. It'll fall to bits one day)

Hey Paul.....I met Lobby Lloyd in the old Coloured Balls days, prior to him playing in Billy Thorpe and the Aztecs (after Slakewells dad). Got to know him pretty well through an old footy mate who was the Coloured Balls (and later Aztecs)roady. Lobby was a really nice bloke, loved a beer or two as well! He reckons I was the only person left alive that had seen him play with the Purple Hearts in the mid 60's. He's one of my five all time favourite guitarists.
I heard a cool Keith Richard story on the radio when they had listeners calling in with their meeting famous people stories.
One pissing down rainy Melbourne morning this woman was driving her kids to school when he car was shunted up the arse by a stretch Limo. Neither car was movable so she had to stand in the pissing rain sorting out the details with the other driver and wait for the cops. After a while, the rear door of the limo opened and the occupent shouted, "Hop in out of the rain darlin'". Without hesitation she hopped in to discover the Limos occupent was Keith Richard. She reckoned he was a real charmer, asked why she was out on such a shitty day and when she told him she was driving the kids to school, he asked his driver to fetch the kids from the Mums car and bring them to the limo as well. She went on to say that he offered her a Vodka which she declined but did accept a coffee which he made for her using the coffee machine in the Limo. She said that he seemed to really enjoy the experience and especially enjoyed talking music with her teenage kids. When the replacement Limo arrived, he insisted on delivering the kids to school and requested that the driver make a big deal by driving the limo onto the school grounds too impress the kids mates. He then drover her to her home and as a final gesture, gave her a phone # to call to request five tickets to that nights Stones gig. They were front row VIP tickets and during the show old Keith recognised her and her family and mentioned the story on how they'd met to the audience. The family even got backstage passes to the post gig party where they were introduced to the rest of the band.
He seems like a nice bloke to me too.

Got mistaken for Lemmy Bruce from Motorhead in a Hollywood bar once.
Met Sonny Barger of Hells Angels fame at a book signing.
Went to Mel the famous 'Dragon man' annual machine gun shoot.

Correct my friend. Once Lenore and I made eye contact across that room it was if we were one. That chance meeting morphed into an intense and extremely erotic relationship that ended only when Lenore became aware of my brief but tawdry affair with Kerry Ann Kennerly. I had to buy a lot of beers for my media chums to keep the story out of the tabloids, mainly as a mark of respect for Kerry Annes long suffering husband.
-
Sorry Firko. I pulled the last post as I was worried it was in bad taste.
-
It certainly was :o

I saw the Stones in 1965 or at the Manufacturers Pavillion at Sydney Showground, when Brian Jones was still in the band. My parents had bought me tickets for my birthday and it was my first real date with a girl. Roy Orbison was the support act and they booed him throughout his whole show and then the chicks screamed right through the 45 minute Stones gig so all I remember was the girls (including my date) screaming their lungs out.

did you see that gig paul?
i have stones bootlegs from late 60's through to around 2002 (including some of the gigs i went to) also have Zeppelin , 150 + Springsteen Boots (now there's a live act that can't be beat)
-
Springsteen Boots (now there's a live act that can't be beat)
Hoony....I've seen two live shows that left me breathless. Number one was Bruce Springsteen at the Roxy in Hollywood in December 1975. They recorded the gig and if you've ever heard his live version of Santa Claus is Coming to Town, you can hear my then girlfriend do a "whoooee" in the audience. The gig lasted nearly 4 hours and I've never seen a harder worker on stage before or since.
The other show that blew me away was about a year later, Warren Zevon at the Golden Bear in Huntington Beach, CA. I'd never heard of him before the gig so was dragged along by friends, not really knowing what to expect. This was the showcase tour to promote his first album and he had a kick arse band including Jim Keltner on drums and session great Waddy Wachtel on guitar. Zevon was a piano paying equivalent to Springsteen as far as his ability to capture his audience. A week later Wherewolves of London hit the charts and he was a star. I saw him do a one man show at the Bridge Hotel in Rozelle, Sydney back in the early 90s and he'd lost nothing except his health. He had prostate cancer (I think) and eventually died from it a few years ago. Brilliant songwriter.

I have a boot at the Roxy 1975 titled "The Roxy Road" 17th Oct 1975 (night 2 of a 4 night stand). but he didn't do "santa Claus" till later in that tour around Nov. i can copy this "Complete" 2 cd boot and give it to you at CD7. one of my fav's of that era is "Rosalita"
if you are refering to the 1978 "darkness" tour, they did indeed record the gig and the live tracks ended up on the 1975-1985 offical live album.
i went through a compulsive obsessive Springsteen collection phase back in 1996, nearly every live gig he has done from 1970 to today is available in some form. 80%of them in shit sound (awesome gigs though) the 20% is what's good to collect.
Check this out,

I forgot this one, I went on a harbour cruise and the late Ted Mulry was on the after a few beers I proped him and asked if he ever remembered playing at the 'Coach House(nee Blood house) ' in Cowra circa 76-77? Bugger me he could just about remember everything about it even down to the concrete octapus in the pool. Ted was a genuine nice bloke and even took the ribbing about him making a comeback with a 'dance' remix of Jump in my Car pretty well. I also asked him if he ever listened to Roy and HG on JJJ, he had never heard of them but I said the standard for a song was 'Is it as good as Jump in my Car?" by Ted Mulry. He got a good laugh out of that. I dunno if I had anything to do with it but he was the 'lead role' in Roy and HG's sitcom 'The Life of Ian' with Lisa Forrest and Paul Sirronen(it was that serious) ;D Nice bloke RIP Ted.

Every day my friend and I take time out to go for a lunch time walk. The walk is a very pleasant stroll by the Swan river in Perth. A few days ago we noticed a few goverment limos parked in a car park by the fore shore. We didn't think much of it untill we passed close by and saw a grey haired man talking to some elderly folk ahead of us - my mate said "thats Kevin Rudd" I thought surely not! low and behold - it was, he finished his chat with them and then came over to us. I was beside myself! he was very pleasant to talk to and a really nice guy, I shook his hand and introduced myself to him. Anyway - long story short, nothing like what I thought!!

Nice bloke RIP Ted.
Lozza, just to back that up - a woman I work with was friendly Ted during his heyday and says he was absolutely the absolutely nicest human being on the planet. 35 years on she hasn't forgotten him at all.

Wandering through the supermarket I saw this old bloke who somehow looked familiar sitting on a bench. I said "Are you John Harvey" He replied indeed he was and was surprised I recognised him. I introduced myself and for the next 10 mins we had a great chat about motor racing in the 70's and 80's. An absolute gentleman, so glad I took a chance and said hello. J

Thanks Al I must admit it was only running into "Slug" yesterday that made me remember this topic. Reading through it made me realise that some top blokes have dropped off the forum over the last couple of years. I miss their contributions. J

This might sound corny to some, but the most famous people I've ever met would have to be my parents. They've had a staring roll in my life and never been paid, but have always past expectations.jimson

Over the year I have meet a lot of people who can be called famous. The ones who I am happy to say that I have meet;
Phil Crump, Ivan Magaur and a whole heap of top international speedway riders from the 70's and 80's when I was an official at Broken Hill Speedway in the early 80's
Phil Lovett, Geoff Ballard, Laurie Alderton and all the other top enduro riders of the late 70's and early 80's, when I rode the first few 4 Day enduros. I still have one of Geoff's old Maico riding jerseys.
Jay Springsteen - 2001 Springfield Mile, I meet him in the pits, and had a nice chat both befor and after the races, a great guy, he gave me a heap of signed bits and pieces which take pride and place in the man cave.
Chris Carr - 2001 Peoria TT, friendly chat while walking through the pits, another great guy.
Mel Gibson, George Miller, Byron Kennedy Dean Semlar - I was an extra in Mad Max 2 back in 1981. (Mel was quite a nice guy back then, and seems to have gone downhill over the years)
Steve Gall, did a Hungry Creek MX school back in 1978, and have since meet and spoken with him often during Tenere Tragic rides over the past few years. I am so please that he remembers me and actual comes up to me for a chat, an absolute gentleman.
I have also meet quite a few Prime Ministers, Opposition Leaders and a few Governors General and State Governors, all while I was serving in the Navy.
Along the way I have found that virtually all of them are real people just like the rest of us. With a few exceptions, over the years I have found that bike people are the nicest, humblest of the "famous"people I have meet. However, there have been a few sports people who I have meet that I didn't particularly take to, mostly because there seem to have an attitude of the world owes them everything just because they are good at hitting or kicking a ball.

Bang on Col, bike folk have no class system evident. We have been lucky in historic roadracing to have had Phil Read and Jim Redman visit and ride, both were only too keen for a few beers and some bench racing with the troops, and neither shirked when it was their round. You could be a C grade tailender and the common bond of bike racing draws everyone together. A bloke beside me in the sports club adjoining the Blacktown Travelodge when we were cranking into it late one evening said, "Bugger me, still can't believe that's Phil Read drinking with us. Can you imagine bloody Greg Norman doing that with the punters ? And he couldn't even start your race bike."
