Yeah Boney you tell him ;D, motocross is all about winning and the Yammie 465 did that. No point in having a bike that only goes for half the races ;D

To use the car comparison of Bonehead , I can't fathom why Tony B would own a 465 Yamaha after owning a Maico . It would be like trading your 911 Porsche in on a Datsun 180B  ;D  . As for Bob Hannah, he would have won if he was riding a Bultaco  :) . The reason 465's won races back in the day was because good riders were riding them . I reckon that the ingredients of winning a motocross race are 70% rider , 20% bike & 10% luck .

I owned & raced a YZ465H back in '81 . I now own & race an '81 490 Maico & I reckon that it is twice as good as the YZ pogostick Yamahammer was back then. I give myself an uppercut every time I think back , for not forking out the extra dollars for the Maico in '81. Maybe with the use of modern shock internals the monoshock can be made to work ok these days, but it was certainly the main thing that spoilt the bike back then (as well as the topheavy feeling from the shock high up in the frame). Not that I am that great a rider, its just that the Maico handles that much better & as a package is so much easier to ride than the Yamaha (or anything else of that era for that matter). In my opinion , the next best thing to the '81 Maico in the open evo class is the '83/'84 Husky CR500 (although they don't turn that well). Dennis the KTM fanatic, might argue that the 495 is also a good thing & they have more power than anything else in the class , but they handle like a wheelbarrow full of watermelons & so are only good for winning the drag race to the first corner.
So sorry, Tony B ,for sticking my head into the Yamaha camp, but somebody has to check up on you guys occassionally to make sure you are not blaspheming Maico's good name. :)
Husky me boy. I note your passionate persuasive tirade but I remain unconvinced but with an open mind. There's only one thing to do; we'll have a 'forum shot out'. We'll all turn up at an agreed track, at an agreed time, takes turns and do a couple of laps on your Maico and Boneheads 465 and then vote  ;D.

And just to make it fair we'll do it a several different tracks....and in different weather conditions  ;D

Come on guys lets name a date; whatcha reckon, the highlite of CD5 ;D

I own a 465 YZ, 490 YZ a 465 IT and a 490 Maico. I love my Yamahas, always have but the're not comparable to the Maico in any department except brakes. You can always tell the ones who've never ridden a Maico 490. Once you've ridden one you realise that the hype is pretty true. I was a disbeliever until I got mine..........

Lets get every example together (CR500RE, YZ465, RM500, KTM495, KX500, Husky CR500, Maico 490) for an ultimate big bore shoot-out, no more hype, no more bull shit, just the ultimate bragging rights. How about that for the main feature of the next VMX mag issue or the one after that, I am sure they could find good examples of each machine to do an ultimate comparison.

Why do we need a shootout now ;) ??? when the best shootout that you could have was in 1981. And the winner of the Open class 1981 MXGP was Honda, second was Honda and third was Yamaha. Also the winner of the 1981 AMA Open class was Yamaha, second was Yamaha, and third was Honda.  ::) so if these Maico's are so good (as in 'twice as good') why didnt I see Maico in the results. ;D ;D ;D

In fact from the years 1970 to 1985 Maico didnt win any 'Open class MXGP' titles but they did manage to get 2 second place and 3 third places, and when you add in the 'AMA Open class' podium finishes from 1972 to 1985, 1 more second and 2 thirds can be added. So yeah I suppose 8 podium finishes in two different competitions over 16 years racing isnt bad ;) ;D ;D ;D Yep, I can see were you Maico boys are coming from about your bikes being twice as good ;) ;D ;D ;D ;D

Ummm, yeah in the same competitions thoughout the same years Yamaha stood proud on the podium 20 times with
9 wins, 7 seconds, and 4 thirds.

Yep a shootout for 1981 back in 1981 would read, Yamaha, 'Open class AMA first and second' and 'Open class MXGP third', but nowhere in the results does it say Maico. ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
