Besides dumping the plastics will fit forum and missing the point I still know that for something to be worth $10000 as compared to something that is worth $5000 it has to be twice as good or almost twice as good, that would be like pitting a 200cc against the 490 maico, and I can assure you Maico boys the 465 aint no 200... I concede that the maico is better, but nowhere near the "twice as good mark." As for Dirt bike mag in the 80's they we so pro maico it was obvious to all. Those were the days when people were bored with Jap bikes and the yanks were cube crazy , so when a big cube euro bike came on the scene and it handled well, it created a overly enthusiastic report which a lot of magazine readers believed...

TonyB, I would've thought the Maico boys would've come back with the boxing gloves on but it looks like they have given up ;) ;D ;D ;D ;D

I have been feeling guilty about hi-jacking the Yamaha plastics thread , so I thought that I would keep away for a while . I apologise to Bonehead & the other YZ guys. Some interesting comments came out though . I could talk more about why Yamahas won titles back in the day , but here is probably not the place to do it. A big bore evo shootout in VMX mag (although they are probably going to do one anyway , as the 250 shootout was a good read ) would be a great idea & probably should have a thread devoted to it in general chat . I think that there would be no surprises in which bike would win , but the runner up spot could be interesting  :).

Nice article Firko (I've just finished reading it) but its compares a Maico with a modern KTM, and the Maico compares favourably.

It would be interesting to see a comparison between a YZ490 and a WR450 (hint, hint). Then we might have a basis for drawing a conclusion.

But it would be more relevant to have a Maico - Yammy 490 'head to head' shoot out report.

It would be even better to organise  a 'forum shoot out' where each of us plebes can test ride both  ;D. But then that would probably end the controversy and kill all conversation; whatelse would we argue about? ??? ::)

I put the 450 Yamaha up against Garry Benns ex works HL Yamaha in ADB earlier in the year and the YZ flogged the HL in every department. The next shootout we've got planned is a CR500 V CRF450 sometime early next year. In my honest opinion though, the YZ450 would flog the 490 in every department. We've ridden both along with an '84 500 Maico all on the same day with five riders ranging from a fit A grader to fat  old pensioner me and the YZ450 flogged the Yamaha and Maico. It's not the result I wanted as it's my Maico but the truth is the truth. Interestingly the 2001 WR360 Husky also there beat the Yamaha YZ in all departments. Remember though, this wasn't anything official, just a bunch of mates having some fun.

Spoke to Scott W today. The Concourse Parts bits are still happening, but slowly due to them wanting the parts to be right.

Current ETA:
D/E/F guards early next year, the rest of the D/E parts mid next year.
The good thing about telling the truth is that you don't have to remember what you said.
