Well, I collect old cars as well as old bikes, but I am just about done with cars and I am going to unload the majority of them, this is one that I finnished off today, it will be on show tomorrow at the all Chrysler day in NSW , it is now also for sale so, I thought I'd give all you 70's blokes a looky...

nice job ;)
-
can you tell me what model that is? i know a family member who has a 80 or 81 valiant. its the 6 cylinder hemi charger motor i think and its all original unrestored condition. it was a ex mitsubishi dealer car for a short time and the there has been only elderly owner since the early 80s when he bought it in basically new condition from the dealer and was only used for caravan trips every so often. its all in good condition and has low KM's, original paint, no rusted pannels etc and has a few factory fitted extra optionals, but i forgot what they are. its in amazing conditon but we want to know how much its worth. we have been told anything well over $10,000 or more and it really needs to go to a collector or valiant/chrystler enthusiast who knows what it is. its suposedly the last model valiant and looks a lot like yours
its a valiant CM sedan 12/80 and has GLX badges on it.
the only major non factory item is it has Pacemaker extractors as he couldnt get new original type headers
-
it's a 1971 VH Pacer, the one your freind has is a CM , sounds like an interesting car!
-
its kind of been on the market for a while, he hasnt been too desperate to sell it and since hes in his 80's has no idea about advertising on the internet or anything like that or what its really worth. its the same sort of yellow as yours
-
very nice indeed .... I gave up on cars 10 years ago when I need glasses ;D
Rumour had it back in the 70's Chrysler sent a couple of special projects up by train to Acacia Ridge ( Qld ) for there engineers to sort out ....sporting healthy V8 in chargers ;)
-
simply beautiful!
my brother owned a Dodge ute years ago similar in shape to this one.
i'm in the market for a new car at the moment and just find zero connection to the modern cars
but given the QLD climate, i'll more than likely play a safety shot with a modern car with good aircon.
would love a HT wagon with a VL commodore 6 slotted in with aircon.
mmm... collector cars....
-
SWEET. You guys have some cool stuff Down There we never had here in the States.
-
jeez that's nice E74..actually it's a stunner!..love the old Valries 8) gimme a VG coupe or an ol' Charger any day (preferably the E55 fitted with a 6 Pack ;D), they simply oooz style. I've ye ol' Aussie icon the '53 FJ Special sedan. Due to come back out of retirement in about 2 months and resto'd back to the condition you see in the pic below taken in 1980 something..maybe '87ish. I bought it when I was 17 and drove it into the ground over the years then rebuilt it. If you look close I did not have time to fit the wipers before we needed the car for my brothers wedding. After this I drove it into the ground once again and it has sat ever since (15 years) As much as I liked the red motors she's going back to the old sideplate grey with the twin carbs and all the chrome bits that one could buy. Except the sump, I was alway told never chrome the sump..stupid me believed it! ::) I just happened to keep most of this stuff as well. Hoarding can be quite a good thing ;)

oldfart you liar! ::) I gave up about 15 years ago too but like me, I 'know' with the emphasis on the word 'know', that you've kept something tucked away..c'mon, lets see a pic and a few details of kermit :o 8)
Fav cars..55/56/57 sedans/nomads, 67/68 Impala 2 door, Dodge Daytona, Plymouth Barracuda or simply the good old Aussie muscle such as the Valiants, Holdens or Fords. Favorite Aussie car are the XB GT Coupes. I used to own a Goss Special and how I wish now I'd never sold it! :'( Actually I go for anything from the 50's thru to the late 70's Aussie or US iron and some pommie cat stuff as well ;)
-
That's a seriously cool Valiano E74! The detailing is superb and it's great to see a six under the hood with a minimum of bling. Very tasteful. What brand and size wheels are they? I quite like them.
I too have a soft spot for Mopars. I bought a new 318 VG VIP in 1970 that is still the only new car I've ever owned. I've also owned a VF 318 ute, VG Hemi Pacer coupe, a VJ 245 sedan and a GLX 265 Centura. I've got a 440 big block engine and all the gear to fit it to a VJ-CM including the crossmember, tailshaft and bellhousing to suit a top loader that's been sitting under the bench for 20 years.Three years ago I returned to the Mopar fold with my '04 Jeep Grand Cherokee.
-
That is neat, E74. ;D
Not my kinda thing, I've got a few old Mercedes cars as well and not really into much else.
I do remember trying to convincee my Dad to buy a Charger when they were new though............... .
I think there's a few of us here into old cars as well?
-
kermit Holden Uc (1978 ) sunbird on steroids, too many good memories thats why we have kept her

As the Kevlars get older we're getting more into old cars. I restored my Jag because I was at Bathurst the year Gossy won in the Walkinshaw Jag and will never forget the sound of the big V12 on full song. I'd wanted a Mustang but couldn't find one that fitted my price range. The Jag was much cheaper and is a surprisingly easy car to work on. It's not concourse by a long way as I'd rather drive it than spend all my time polishing it. Jonesys Mustang was bought sight unseen on eBay a few years ago form Pennsylvania. It's a sweet car with a 348cc 302/top loader/9 inch and rack and pinnion steering. He has a genuine Gurney Weslake headed Boss 302 on the engine stand eventually slated to go in but he's too busy enjoying the car to pull it off the road. Other 'Kar Kevlars' are Steepys recently imported '84 Corvette, found in Japan of all places and Edgar Phipps genuine XY GTHO Phase 3 which he's owned for years, before the prices wend stupid.

How's this for Dumb!! i had a manual E38 charger when i got married , thought i should do the "right" thing and get a " responsible type" car . traded it in on a vh 4 cylinder comadore car got $ 4k Paid 12 K for comadore value now Charger $50K plus, commadore ,$100 scrap. Shit we are stupid when we are young!!!

Here is a pic of my old coupe it was a lot of fun ,from cruising the highways to the Street Drags at Calder. The downside was a pepper red coupe and p plates seemed to attract the plods . For anyone who knows Rowville that pic was taken where Stud park shopping centre is and the ever reliable HR wagon was a mates , between the 2 of them we could get about 20 people into the drive in at Rowville. I barreled rolled it at high speed and wrote it off . Still spewing !!(http://i204.photobucket.com/albums/bb130/yzhilly/scan0001-1.jpg)

Wombat, I still have that suit and those shoes and you just mark my words, they WILL come back into fashion!! :D actually they might have come back and gone out again already, it was about 20 years ago :-\ I'll keep em' anyway cause they still fit ;D if you notice in the pic my neighbor and schoolmates from across the road had a nice red charger (you can just see the back), his younger brother had the red/orange VG Pacer and their dad owned both a pristine white VK 318 Charger and pristine olive green VC sedan. The guy in the house to the left across the street had a greymotor powered speedcar, 2x dirt track TM125's on methanol and a brand spanking new XW GTHO a few years earlier to haul it all around. The guy 4 doors down built sprincar engines and these also found their way into HT utes and such hooked up to 2 speed glides with stall convertors. I can still remember riding in the HO and the ute and when they sank their foot in the way I was pinned to the seat..it was awesome for a very impressionable kid!! I was brought up in a great neighborhood in the days when everyone knew everyone in the street..days now long gone :-\
-
Hey Doc
You scrubbed well in that bag of fruit.

So how did you go at the Chrysler Day ???
I WON!

I was brought up in a great neighborhood
Met too Doc. Your street sounds like late 60's/early 70's era Maroubra, my spiritual stomping ground. The humble FJ ruled the streets of our little beachside suburb where blokes like Billy Woods and his 14 second red motor FJ ruled the Bunnerong Power Station drags. Another local legend, Peter Ford had the distinction of building what quite probably was the very first red motored FJ in the world, in early 1964. His dad was the service manager at RSL cabs and Pete got a taxi 179 engine that'd run out of oil, about a month after the EH was released. I can remember riding my pushy around to his house and seeing the engine on the bench fitted with the triple 1 1/12 SU's from his grey motor. By the time I'd finished totally buggering the Hillman Minx my parents had bought me as a "sensible first car" by fitting a Holden engine, I just had to own an FJ of my own. I bought the ex Kevin Macintyre (the guy who started K-Mac Suspension ) Apendix J FX, complete with 3.25 bore grey motor with 12-1 Weslite pistons, triple 1 1/4 SUs Barry Seton extractors, and shitloads more. The old girl was a beast but couldn't hold a candle to Woodsy and Fordy and their 179 FJs so, out went the grey and in went the red, a worn out 186. I fitted a Wilkinson 12 port head, McGee 30-70 cam, and triple 1 3/4 SUs and another set of Seton extractors. I fitted a Jag Moss 4 speed and a 4-1 Zephyr/Transit van diff after breaking the originals too many times and went drag racing. I was stoked to do 15s in the old black girl but Ron Harrop was pulling 12's in his car down in Victoria so I vowed to build the FX into a Harrop Beater. Unfortunately, I fell asleep at the wheel one night and destroyed the car against a pole in Seven Hills. I managed to save everything except the body and fitted it all to a pretty clean 56 FJ that had also seen action as a road race Apendix J car. That car ended up with a 215 stroker crank, 3 x 45mm Webers and then triple 2" SUs, an MGB gearbox and 4-7 Transit gears in the Zephyr diff. My plans of knocking off Harrop were a little short of reality but the car did run high 13's which was damn good for 1970, especially for a registered street car on street tyres (road racing Bridgestones actually).
The FJ was eventually taken off the street and I bought, with help the finance company and Dad a brand new VG VIP 318, (complete with padded vinyl roof, electric windows and aircon but no bloody radio! how weird? )to tow the FJ and trailer. Towing the old FJ to Surfers and Calder got old really quickly so I sold the FJ to my apprentice and we built an altered (Satans Chariot VW D/A) using the original grey engine from my FX. After a year we sold the altered and decided to go big time by building a fibreglass Fiat Topolino A/A fitted with a fuel injected 327 small block Chevy. Unfortunately the "big time" came with expenses we hadn't envisioned in the original plan and after a couple of crippling blowups and a big transmission blowup at Adelaide International that nearly took my mate Bernies balls out, we decided that we'd had enough and sold the car to a bloke in Bendigo. By then I was just starting to race motocross and the rest is history. I never lost the love of cars or bikes. My motor racing 'career' amounted to zero when compared to others but I wouldn't swap those days for anything. I'd build another FJ tomorrow if the right body came along.

Our 327 Chevy powered Fiat altered, Castlereagh Dragway, August 1973.
Postscript: About 10 years ago I got a phonecall from a bloke who identified himself but the name didn't mean anything. He then went on to tell me that he had seen my name in ADB and remembered that I was the guy who he'd bought his FJ from twenty eight years earlier. He then went on to tell me that he'd joined the Army after finishing his apprentiship and hed been transferred to Townsville. He met a local girl and settled up there after his stint in the services ended. The big news to me though was that he still owned the FJ after all of those years. He had shipped it up to Qld and took the hotty engine out and fitted a mild 202. At that time he'd nearly finished restoring it and was ready to put it back on the street. Unfortunately I never heard back from him and I lost his contact details so..If anybody in NQ knows of a nice FJ (possibly painted silver or gunmetal grey), that may be my old car and I'd love to own it again, or just see it!. It's got a history worthy of its own book. I only wish I had a decent photo to show you guys.
-
Good to see some nice cars owned by you guys.
Here are a couple of pics of my 4 wheeled toy. Its a 1965 Honda S600. 600cc, DOHC, quad carbed, chain driven screamer redlining at 9500rpm.

I like the old Val's and american stuff but what a bout a real classic that will never die and has been around the clock once and back to 0 with me in it.......... That is right a restored car that gets used properly not to just go to shows, My other car has recently been stolen from my driveway so this is now my everyday drive.
-
In reply to the previous pulled post.
Yeah, I kind of understand your concern but nobody knows where you live and very few your real name. What's the point of owning nice cars if you can't show them off a bit? Has the world become so bad that a bloke can't post a piccy of his bloody car without becoming paranoid that it'll be knocked off? Each to his own I guess.........nice car though.
-
Firko. Yeah I know. It is a shame I have be that way. I have been touched up by the low life types few years ago and lost a rare car. We believe we know who took it, even saw some of the parts off the car being sold but couldnt prove it to the police. ID' ing a mark here and bump their was not proof enough for the law. Even thou they did agree it was very likely them. Still needed soild proof before they could act.
Yup I am a little paranoid now. Thanks for you comment on the beasty. After I remembered these threads are completely puplic and not a members only area I got nervous and pulled the post.
It would not be too hard to track my location. I often put up links to auctions on ebay for bikes im selling. In those listing is my location. A very small town. Certainly not hard to track me down by asking a few locals. Tracking my storage shed however would be a lot more difficult. ;)
-
Quicky,
by being so fussy do you think you are letting the bad guys win, I can tell you where lies lots of expensive cars that you would have to sell your house and all your bikes and borrow millons to buy.
They still drive them show them and love them, If they go missing they are insured, I know another guy in my car club that opens up his house to an event once a year come one come all. Has 10millon dollars worth of cars in his shed in 6 cars.
I think you are being to fussy or don't have proper cover cause at the end of the day I can own anything but if I don't use it what is the point. I mean that A model in the picture has been to around Australia.

runutz698,
I think Firko was only one that saw my original post so he knows the sort of cars we have. Fussy, yeah a little i guess. We do drive and enjoy one of the cars every month or so.
If they go missing they are insured? That maybe so mate but one car I purchased in 1983, I worked two jobs to pay it off. It cost me as much then as I would of paid for a brand new in the day. If not for my father going on the loan with me the bank would never of given me the money for what was already a 12 year old car at the time. Insured ? Yes. Replaceable, maybe.
I certainly admire you friend for opening his doors and letting people see his cars. We did that too. Displayed at nationals in Valla for few years as well. In the end all that did was cost us a car.
-
Quicky If we all followed your perspective on classic car (and bike) ownership, the joys of owning something unique that deserves to be shown off would be lost and we'd be all driving beige Camrys. I've been robbed too but I don't let that one crook experience rule my life.
-
beige Camrys. Hahaha. Wouldnt that be a boring world. ;D I see your point mate. Hope you can see mine too. ;)
-
Well done E74 . Very nice challenger ,I remember a mate's old man imported a Javelin with a KB 426 and it was a wild street car .

heres my dodge took to car show had more people around it than all the rods and muscle cars ???
-
As some of you would know driving a muscle car around is like painting on back window "Race Me" to every dickhead who thinks his car was hot. You know the type. Bloke who put new rings, regrind cam, 350 holley on his 253 and boasted he had 400hp.
Late 1980s early 90s the V8 was still king ( at least in rural Oz ) No rice burners with doof doof CD players around then. We kinda got tired of the dickheads wanting to have a go each time we took out the pride. So with old XB hardtop body and few nice bits laying around we thought we would build a car to really shame out those dickheads without the worry about destroying an original matching number bock.
We used a good old trusty 351 Cleveland. Dropped on some XAGT 4 dot closer chamber heads, 780 holley and hit the streets. Nice clean looking car. The dickheads came and let them have it. In one of these little runs we dropped a rod. No problem have few 351 around we put in another bottom end. That was my plan.
Things got out of hand a little. 5 month later the XB rolled out again. Now she was black. Had 31 spline axles, bull nose toploader from a big block mustang, haze 600hp clutch and best part. "Her new engine". John Cain in NSW was the man in those days bringing in the good gear from USA. We took a drive to New Castle and picked up a Nascar 4 bolt block, A pair of super cobra heads with adjustable rockers, Weiand tunnel ram, pair of 660 Holley centre squirts, roller rockers, stud girdle, Carrillo rods.
Handed the whole lot over to speed boat engine builder. The result 648hp..
Damn that car was fun. Only got about 3 mile to the gallon, but mate the power.. Fuel stops were the local airport, avgas its diet.
Attached her dyno sheet.
-
That's some serious mumbo from that Clevo Quicky. That engine would have worked nicely in the little car below! We ran mid 9s with "only" 510bhp, which was pretty stout for 1972. Camshaft design and headwork has come a long way since our 44-80 Isky flat tappet cam and iron 'fuelly' heads. By modern standards, our engine was a streeter.
This thread has evoked memories from over thirty years ago and a time when I had time to hold down a job, race motocross, drag race and play rugby union. It was all so easy. Now I'm retired, don't race motocross, don't drag race and my rugby action is played on the couch watching a test match. Why then do I seem to have less time to do shit than I had back then? Oh to be young again. ;D
Here's another shot I uncovered of the old drag racer from 1973. Shit we had fun racing that puppy!
note shiny almost new VG Valiant Pacer in the background. It fits in with the original thread I reckon!

Boat engine builders name wasn't Russell Jones ex Jim reeds - motor man Winfield Top fueler by any chance
-
I knew Russell Jones Oldfart, in fact he did work on my Holden sixes and the Chevy. He was a damn good engine man.
-
You blokes don't know power look at this beast ;D its the same age as me.jimson
-
My first car was a slightly earlier model Hillman to yours Jimson, mine was a 59 model Minx. I put a Humber Vogue alloy head and twin SUs on it and it was still a slug. I stuck a Holden grey motor in it and totally buggered it. I still have a soft spot for Hillmans though.
-
Hey my big sisters first car,but in blue and we used too listen to Credence Clear Water Revival.
great stuff cheers
-
on the good ol' 8 track too I bet VMX47! 8)
Jimson in a straigtline drag with 2 stock standard models the disc braked 4 speed 1725cc Hillman would give the old Holdens a good run if not beat them over a standing quarter. Would be a time somewhere in the vicinty of 20 seconds but I remember my '65 Hillman smoking the tyres first into second with a lot of encouragement, something I couldn't get a stock grey to do was spin the wheels in angst :D I still love em' all from the era Hillmans included Jimson, my dad had the '61 model 2 tone blue before he purchased the EK wagon. The Hillman was simply too small for a growing family but the hydra-matic EK wagon was definately slower and an FJ would whip both an EK and the Hillman in performance stakes :D

As the Kevlars get older we're getting more into old cars. I restored my Jag because I was at Bathurst the year Gossy won in the Walkinshaw Jag and will never forget the sound of the big V12 on full song.
We had the Jag that won Bathurst at one of our track nights at Sandown a couple of weeks ago.
The car is back in Aus and lives just a couple of streets away from me
-
Boat engine builders name wasn't Russell Jones ex Jim reeds - motor man Winfield Top fueler by any chance
No mate. Brian Mc Cosker, owner, driver and builder of Liberty. One of Australia fastest power boats.
-
I reckon the Walkinshaw Jag is up there with the Moffat and Geohegan Mustangs and the Norm Beechey Monaro as one of the true icons of Aussie touring car racing. Both Walkinshaw cars and Garry Wilmingtons red XJS were cutting the got laps at this years Muscle Car Masters at Eastern Creek. Although I'm obviously biased, I reckon there is nothing to beat the sound of a 600hp V12 Jag on full song.
Below: Gossy in the Walkinshaw XJS at the Muscle Car Masters at Eastern Creek, earlier this year. Ain't she a beauty?

I totally agree Firko, the big cats sound unreal..here's a nice little peice of motoring memorabilia. He could have actually got some air just before the bridge but he bottoned off for a split second. Awesome stuff and a drivers car obviously ;)

Hot lap of 2:18.822 compared to about 2:06 or Something by Garth Tander this year some 23 years later..after watching Tom you'd wonder how you could go any quicker but every year they do just that even with Caltex Chase added. To outbrake anyone at the end of Conrod must have required some huge balls and lots of faith! :o and now for something a little more light hearted..

Geez, the ATCC was a lot better back then...
Look at the way the cars slide into and through the corners. Racing is more interesting when you don't have much downforce:

nothing to beat the sound of a 600hp V12 Jag on full song.
Firko, I was down at Bathurst the year the three cats raced (first year of full group A), they sure did have a great note racing down conrod and over the hump you could hear them over reving!!!

Hey E74 they just had the Chrysler day on Classic Restos on C31 there was some some very cool wogmobiles there i just caught the end of the cruise down the highway what a beautiful noise !!!.

I saw them at Wellington 500 sounded like 2 cbx1000 ,s going hard at it . the echo off the buildings was a solid memory.

That looks neat, Adrian. ;D
There's one of those in Balaklava S.A. and an almost identical one at the Motor Museum at Birdwood too.

yeah there's a few getting around up here too Tony, I luuuurve those wings. The jet age was excellent for vehicle design 8) surprisingly I have seen a few '57 chevs of late getting around here also. 3 in the past week and 2 I see regularly, 2 are metallic blue (1 with GM671 poking it's snout through the bonnet) and the other new one I spotted on friday was a pearl silver. All extremly nice, highly modified drive trains and of show standard but obviously daily drivers which makes them even better in my eyes ;) reminds me of Running On Empty..spota, a '57 chev, correction, spota a blown '57 2 door chev. Ya putting on all the agony but you just haven't got the style..you have to feel the power! quote from Max Cullen just before he hands the young guy his black out glasses ;D a great movie for the day..might have to watch it again..check the points? Yeah Foxy, gap the plugs? Yeah Foxy, well go f#ck yourself then!..classic! :)
-
Thats a sweet sound u got there.. ahhh green is nice....14.6..14.6..., "Piss off".... thats a polish name.... :D :D Hey rammer.. shake my Windows.. ;D :D :D 8)
Thats a bloody great movie.. i going to watch it for the 100th time tonight..

Dreams can come true. I never thought I would own one but all up to buy and bring the car here it owes me $30K. I know it's not practical to go shopping in or pick up the kids from school in but people spend more than that on a Falcon or Commodore. Worst part is with the US dollar at the moment but hopefully in can get back to a resonable state.
-
yeah i am selling vette to fund
my other bad habit women :P
sorry typing error doh ::)
i meant
vintage motorcycles ;D
-
Yeah I thought about all the money I would have to spend on the bikes if I sold the vette but I would miss it to much, besides I'm a horder so I collect everything. Looking to buy an old 60's model Kenworth at the moment. Trucks very expensive. :P

And people reckon there's nothing left out there to find! Here's my latest shed find, a genuine 1980 Walkinshaw XJ-S Jaguar, found for me by Husky 67 in Queanbeyan N.S.W. when he picked up the Silver Bullet 500 Husky he'd purchased from the same owner. As most of you know, I've already got a pretty nice '78 XJ-S but this one is just soooo much nicer. It's got the 6 litre engine (instead of 5.3), cool Bathurst body kit, rare electric sunfoof option, equally rare lambswool upholstery instead of usual leather, tricked up computer, Walkinshaw tweaked injectors and cold air inlet, all new adjustable Bilstein suspension, Le Mans cams, Simmons wheels and best of all, it's as straight as a gun barrel with the very minimum of rust (and none in the usual places). The downside is that the auto transmission is rooted but the seller supplied me with a recoed trans, ready to fit. It's been off the road since 2004 but getting it registered will be a snack.........How much you ask? $5000 Aussie dollars and that includes trucking it to Sydney! Getting this baby on the road may set my bike projects back a tad but it'll be worth it. I'm stoked.

G'day guys bit off topic here but i went and looked at a HR holden today '66' model the body is like 90-95% rust free!!!! comes with 4 others engines to are definate runners ones a 192 i think and the others a 202 the 192 has triple webbers and a yella terra head with mild modified cams or something electrical ingtion and pacemaker extracots like and suposabley comes with a five speed celica gear box thats recondition and a aussie 4 speed or a 2 speed powerglide?? all of its there just needs the time spent to bring it up to standard i was just woundering if i should spend the time on it and my cash ::) the guy wants $1200 do you know if these are good cars or not????
Any advice much appreciated thanks Tom

If there's three Webers then the carbs are worth that - but they've got to be Webers, not SUs, not Strombergs, not even Dellortos.
Stadard, they're typical old Australian cars - solid, durable, unremarkable, old things.
You can tweak the engine and make it relatively fast (as this one has been), but a new XR5 Focus will blow its doors off, while using about a third as much fuel....
You can put good shocks and springs in and make them handle a heap better, but a stock poverty-pack EL Falcon will disappear on any winding road....
Like bikes, old cars have both good and bad points - good because they're simple and have lots of character, bad because they're not the cheapest option and require a lot more work to keep running (or, if you chose to just run it into the ground, you're devaluing a rare/collectable thing).
I've got lots of old cars, and I love them. But in the last few years I've learned how much easier it is to just get a newish car and drive it. Parts are everywhere, they're cheap, and you get stuff like good fuel economy, a heater that warms the car up before you get to work, easy starting in hot or cold weather, air-conditioning, etc etc.
But you're younger and more enthusiastic than my jaded old self, so maybe an HR is a good option if you're enthusiastic about it.
Ring me?
-
Go for it Tom. Old Holdens are cool. Having lived the Weber experience on my FJs back when a HR was a fairly newish car, I'd reccommend looking for something a little less finnicky and thirsty for carburetion. They're great carbies when in good nick and good tune but can be a nightmare if you don't undrerstand whats going on with them. It's much worse with three of them. When I was drag racing I went from Webers back to 2"SUs and the car ran harder and stayed in tune longer. It was far less susceptible to changes in the weather. I sold a set of 1 3/4 SUs on a rare Armour manifold just last week to another forum member for $500 and they badly needed kitting so things aren't cheap when it comes to having something decent hanging off your 192.
I back everything Nathan says about the HR. They weren't the best handler in their day and don't scrub up well against the new gen cars at all except for the cool factor. I reckon the HR is one of Holdens better designs and they come up nicely with a bit of wheel treatment. Don't go with 17" wheels as it upsets the geometry but more importantly they look dumb on old Holdens. 14" wheels are a better go. but whatever you do, remember that no matter what you do to an old holden, it'll rarely let you down as long as you keep the oil and maintenance up to it and when it does break down (as all old cars will occasionally do), it's simple and comparitively cheap to work on and is a good starter for learning the basics of mechanics. I love those old Aussie red sixes. Go for it Tom.
-
Oh, and while we're talking cars again, I dragged home a Fiat 124 this week. :) Cost me $200 on Ebay: http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&item=110335981821
Been 'gunna' get one since before I got my Ps, but every decent one I've found has come up when I've been broke (plus I've looked at a lot of shit over the years...).
This one is a project, and I need another project like a hole in the head... But its a good shell - had a few small, well-performed repairs in the past, and needs a hole in the rear quarter fixed, but is exceptionally rust-free for an Italian car of its era.
And nice score Firko!
-
g'day Tom, a cool car if you're into them, the celica box would be the go, and like firko said go with the simplest carby setup unless you want to spend your life tuning.
Just make sure you're enthusiastic otherwise it'll seem like a chore to fix it up. This is a pretty good forum for info, and also to check out some pics for motivation and ideas http://oldholden.com/
-
Tom , I'm an old car nutter from way back . Both of what Nathan and Firko have stated is of sound Knowledge & advise .
Sit down and work out all the pro and cons of this purchase , FINAL PROJECT COST as it could run into thousands of $$$$$$. Next comes the up keep $100-00 here and there soon adds up (" if it has tits or tyres it's sure to give you problems " )
and if you can afford it after the above go for it . Brocks quote "follow your dream "
GOOD LUCK
-
I agree with the above wise old men Tom. If you decide to go with the HR, weigh up what it's going to cost you to achieve what you imagine in your mind. Is the paint good? If not, you're up for 2-3 k for an average but passable paint job, for a show quality job, 5-10k. Firkos points on the Webers are spot on. I had triple 45mm Webers on my 202 powered LJ GTR back in the day and they kept me permanantly broke between filling the tank and getting them tuned. They're great on a full race engine but on the street they're overkill. They look the goods though. Look for a good set of SUs or even better, a 350 Holley and manifold. You're obviously a keen young bloke and doing up an old Holden is such an Aussie thing to do. Unfortunately, no matter how much you do to the HR it'll never be like a modern car to drive. I recently had a drive in a mates sons HD ute fitted with a 12 port 202, Triple Mikuni/Del Ortos, Supra 5 speed and 4 wheel discs and rack and pinion steering and as quick as the car was, it was bloody primitive thing to drive. All that taken into consideration, you and your dad will have a great time working on the HR and the pride you get from driving and owning a hotty you've built yourself can't be topped.
Hey Firko, that Jag is beautiful. I've always had a soft spot for them, especially since Gossy won Bathurst. The sound of a Jag V12 at 7k is music to the ears. That's the buy of the year, up there with Edgars $200 Ossa Phantom GP2. You Klub Kevlar dudes have uncovered some gems in recent years, Jonesys new B44 Metisse is another brilliant find. The only thing I'd do to the Walkinshaw is put the Minilites off the black Jag on it. Good on you big guy, you deserve it.
.
-
hey nathan i fiat but i dont believe it. i had a fiat 850 sport $4 ran it for two week. i ended up swaping it for a hz statesmen front.the fiat had a burnt valve. i told all my mates that i got and italian sports car and when they saw it they pissed them selfs.
-
The bloke who sold me my XJ-S Jag also has this classic MK2 for sale. It's had all of the bodywork done, is as straight as a dye and runs like a swiss watch. It's got the 4speed overdrive box and 3.4 litre engine. Despite it being partially stripped, it's all there. He needs to sell it because he's moving. If you're interested, PM me.

Hey Nathan, finding a non rusty Fiat is indeed a rare find (as is finding a rust free XJ-S!). Two questions immediately come to mind. 1: Where are you going to put the little bugger as you must admit that here are a lot of vehicles at your house. Second and more seriously, what are you going to do with it? Back in the late 80s my ex wife had one that her current husband fitted a V6 Buick engine (similar to the Commodore V6) and it was a little ripper. I also saw a 124 coupe at the Summernats a few years ago with a turboed FJ20 Toyota engine. It was a seriously deceptive sleeper as it looked bog stock except for a set of Compomotove wheels. I always liked that shaped Fiat but you've got some serious work ahead with that puppy.
-
Firko, you should get together with "Big" John Moffat over at Trials Central. He too has an obsession with jags and twinshocks, but trials twinshocks in his case.
-
Firko's XJ-S reminded me od a "liason" I had once with a girl at Christie's Beach................
She had a red one. Not a Walkinshaw, but it had LE on the back. Limited Edition maybe?
Don't ask why I remember such things.....................
She was all of 18 and Daddy bought her a Jag. Obviously had bad taste cos she liked me.......... :D
-
Hey Mark - One cool Jag and with your new you it will be a sensation. Good on ya mate !!!
For my money my pick is an XK140 roadster. What better set of cool wheels to drive to the Fire House lol!
("tell im he's dreamin" I hear you say, lol) :D

Gday E74,
Just wondering about the first photo of the yamaha, is it a YZ250H 1981, I was just wondering about the forks whuch are pictured. Do they have a lower metal bushing that fits around the inner tube or does it only have the one that fits into the top part of the lower (outer leg), As i am a bit puzzled with a similar resto I am doing...
Like your taste in machines Cheers Brett
-
Brett, I am confused about which bike you mean?, the YZ465 with the Yello Simons Forks?, or the photo with the alluminium original forks? ( which tread is the photo in?)
-
Yep it is the yellow yz, but i cannot seem to se it there now, I was talking about the original forks-but i probably saw a pic of the simmons ones cause they looked quite nice, The forks I am restoring is from my yz250f 1979. are you familiar with the metal bush (slides)
Cheers Brett

Weird thread to be doing this but, diagram below shows exactly how it should go, there is two bearing, a spacer (12) and a seal in the front wheel, besides that there is the axle (24), a sleeve (26) that sits over the 14mm length of the axle and buts against the 19mm part of the axle, the dust seal (25) sits on the sleeve and against the seal.

Jonsey and I had our annual pilgrimage to the Musclecar Masters at Eastern Creek on the weekend. I've never seen so many cool cars outside of the Summernats. The Mustang has it's new Joe Polito 500+hp 347 Windsor and sounded bigger than many of the race cars!
We lined our cars up for our annual photo..the first for my white Walkinshaw.
Anybody want to buy my black XJS by the way?

Firko where was the Klub Kevlar number plate?
-
Gday guys, I know this is an old thread thought I would start it up again because dad and I are doing up this 1977 xc coupe it is a factory 351 4speed and it is fully optioned it has the sunroof aircon and about 20 other options.
I was working on it today and I had to start it and it rumbles the motor was on original bore it is all matching numbers and we had the motor fully rebuilt with a lumpy cam and it is an absolute beast I could have driven it on my L's but now I will have to wait a good 3 years to get a drive in it.
Here is a few pics, thanks Michael.

Looks good Frosty......you obviously have petrol running through your veins.
-
Geez Frosty, that thing looks fantastic. I am very envious of you and your Dad being able to do a project like that together. My son went over to Tassie for Uni in 2000 and liked the place so much he stayed. I miss not being able to do stuff with him.
p.s. I paid a deposit on a new XC fairmont coupe back in the day but had to pull out before it was built. I have always regreted not going ahead with it (and keeping my Mrs happy with a new house instead).
Regards Stan.
-
I had an XC GS ute with a 302 and 4 speed in the same red pepper colour. Loved that ute.
-
She isn't red pepper it is flame red from factory wether that is much different to red pepper I don't know.
My dad always wanted a gt and could never really afford one he agreed to buy a xw gtho for $5k but the guy decided he would keep it and dad didn't worry about it a fair few were about then.
But we would never do a gt mock up every gt you see now is spoilt because you think it is probably a mock up and you could easy do money on what you think is a real one guys know how to make one.
My grandfather had a mate with a xy gtho and he was driving it drunk and went under a semi trailer and died a few would have been written off.
The xc has had a fully rebuilt motor and it is so lumpy it is an absolute beast I had to start it today to move it and it is an absolute beast. :)
-
very, very nice. How you will manage to hold off driving it for 3 yrs I do not know ;D
-
I told dad that I am going to get drunk and get in it and write it off I can imagine he would murder me if I did. ;D
I got to drive his xy it is a ex police car it is a factory 302 we went to Silverton NSW in it I was on L's then so I could drive it but now I am confined to 6's. :)

looks like you're living the dream Frosty, Mad Max was on tele the other night btw.
-
Did watch it for the 50th time too good to see the old bikes as well as cars.
There are a few coupes about was checking them out at the ford show but some of them don't use big enough tyres on the back we have 15x10's and they look great I am pretty sure the coupe could do a pretty mean burnout it still will have to be run in old cars are great to drive the bonnets are visable and they are good fun new stuff handles better etc etc but is not as fun.
-
some of them don't use big enough tyres on the back we have 15x10's and they look great
makes all the difference, those coupes need to have wide rear tyres. You see the same thing with the Torana's with flared guards and piddly 7" rims? why bother with the flares? anyway back to bikes before someone notices ;D
-
Cool car Michael......now young fella, have you finished that GT80 yet? If not put the Falcon away and get back into finishing the little bike. I want to see it at the Bonanza. ;D
-
yup 8) cool car..just out of interest if you haven't seen the Eric Banner movie 'Love My Beast' then do it. It's a great story that hits home on so many levels ;)
-
I am ready to put it together Firko but I probably won't make broadford with it, I will get it done soon I have been buying so many parts I want it 100% right, I will be at Broadford but I won't be riding and it would be a strecth to get the gt done in time but not far away, thanks Michael.
-
Good movie 'Love My Beast'....it really shows how you can get emotionally attached to cars and bikes.
BTW Michael......I like the vinyl roof too. It separates the car from the smoothtops. This forums 'Bazza' has a vinyl top on his Mustang and I reckon it looks cool.
Bring your gear and have a ride on my Yamahas on the dirt track Mikey.....my treat.
-
Yeah I really liked Love the beast but he should have kept his coupe original and bought a different one to race the vinyl roof is original nos material it was hard to find it must have been one of the last sold it has so many options not many have the vinyl roof.
Also that 71 tm400 is sitting in the factory looking at me to get it built I found it had a fresh bore too so shouldn't be to much work in that beast.
I will bring my gear Firko that would be great fun to have a spin on your bikes, thanks alot Michael.
-
One of my biggest regrets was selling my XBGS 302 coupe. It was the original metallic green and gold Goss Special job all factory right down to the fat alloy wheels and all white interior :'(
-
Well, I collect old cars as well as old bikes, but I am just about done with cars and I am going to unload the majority of them, this is one that I finnished off today, it will be on show tomorrow at the all Chrysler day in NSW , it is now also for sale so, I thought I'd give all you 70's blokes a looky...

Nice charga' E74. . . . . . . . . "had" a brown VJ ;D . . now refered to as the chainsaw . . . .
explaination
me + an idiot mate + dark night + damp roads + too much speed + leaving road at quite a clip = cutting down 1 f'n great big gum tree. ???
hence "had" . . . . 26 years later one of only 2 cars that i miss.
A good, safe long weekend to all . . . please dont turn the shopping trolley (car) into a chainsaw!
Enjoy

It's got too many doors......it's a Pacer ;).

I have just bought a 74 vj770 charger with a worked 360 v8 she has plenty of rust but I am going to buy a mig welder and fix it up.
It is starlight bronze in colour at least it is a complete car the rust although a pain is easier to deal with than missing a heap of parts only has 80000km on the clock but was outside for a long time.
The 360 and auto are done so just needs a heap of body work and a respray. :)
-
Good purchase, love the Mopar's, look forward to seeing your progress.
My father loved his Valiants, had a new 770 regal back in the day, I still remember the trip's to race meetings with a trailer & 3 bikes on the back doing 100mph, scary thought now.
-
Yeah I am very happy with it. It has a tow bar on it but whether I will keep that there I have a new ute to tow with but it would look cool a charger towing old bikes. :)
I will post a couple of pics hopefully soon I dislocated my knee cap today playing footy I wanted to be working on the car but I still managed to hop around it and get the engine number to confirm it was a 360 it was originally a 265 auto but they did have 318 340 and 360's factory in chargers so I won't need an engineers report now.
-
I don't know the full story but when they were raced at Bathurst only the 6cyl engine was available.
Maybe Henry & GM were nervous?
Around the same time in the US the Mopar's ruled racing.

Thanks pancho,
I am going to start from scratch strip it completely and get myself a rotisserie that way I can make sure all the rust is removed I got a fair bit of welding to do. :)
-
C'mon frosty wheres the pics ???

I am still hobbling around with the stuffed knee so I will get some tommorow hopefully.
I sold my yz450f today I couldn't start it for them I had to get my dad to hopefully it will come good so I can move around at full speed and start work on the charger.

Michael,
Got some bad news for you on the 265 Vs 360 engine swap.
I'm been heavily involved around VASS work recently fitting a 347 ci Windsor into my 1992 Urvan and have studied the in's and outs of the VASS program. Your problem (and it's an educated guess) is that the 360 will have greater than 120% of original power and/or engine mass of the 265. It's irrelevant that the car would have originally been fitted with an option of the 360 as the approving engineer and Vic Roads have no idea what other option items where production line fitted at the time the 360 was fitted, specifically where the 265 might not have received the same parts. You only need to look at the range of brakes Vs powerplants fitted to the current crop of commodores and falcon's to understand the position of VASS-14.
Rod
It was originally a 265 auto but they did have 318 340 and 360's factory in chargers so I won't need an engineers report now.
-
Hmm will be interesting to see how I go then it has been previously registered with that motor.
I will do some reading on that I have a mate that did a 250 to 351 in an xd so I would think that would be in the same boat but I know the car is done and registered. ???
Thanks for the heads up but I am sure I should be able to do it I hope.
-
Drove both the 6cyl/3 speed RT Charger and a 350 Monaro when I was a young fella.
Both were a lot of fun. ;D
-
Why I mentioned the steering box mounting area is that I know some cases where this has come to my attention.
Probably the worst case was a fellow driving through a roundabout and the car went straight ahead instead of where the driver intended.
Another one was suffering from wandering steering, on inspection the area around the steering box mount was all cracked and opening up. There was no rust involved.
The problem is generally related to power steering putting extra load on the mount area especially when manouvering parking.
On the Val its not only on the V8s.
The 1 tonner Holdens from the same ara commonly cracked the chassis and the cross member on V8s with power steer.
cheers pancho
-
Ok thanks for that info Pancho I will definitely be checking that out.
I got the old girl fired up today the 360 sounded great no noises etc the owner had said motor and trans are done and the way it ran no doubt they have, it sounds not standard but not ridiculous should be good fun to drive after all the other things are taken care of.

Frosty.
Buy the smallest mig you can as the bigger ones will not adjust down low enough to weld sheet metal.
I use a 110 amp cheepie.
-
Cool car ,auz muscle cars getting top money in Unzud,I currently have my old Mustang but god i should have kept my ex JR 350 bathurst monaro!!
-
there were lots off vals / chargers in NZ in the 80s , seemed to be more over there than here.
cool car michael and a V8 8)
-
I would probably not have bought it if not for the done V8 I am looking forward to buying some more tools engine hoist, rotisserie and mig welder to get cracking on it I also have a datsun 240z to do up which will be a fun car too but I am going to need another shed soon.
I am lucky to have mates that do panel beating and upholstery etc etc so I am not short of help probably get my mate to spray the charger for me.
We are getting a bit of a collection going dad has the xy and xc and I have the charger and 240z. :)

Anyone able to add to the story of the shortened up factory ute with the triple webers. This thing was sent to Italy to get tuned and then returned. They then developed the suspension at Mallala in South Aust.
I think the shoretned ute was to simulate weight. The testing was done in secret but was observed by a local farmer who was being paid by the Holden dealer Team(Harry Firth) to report if he ever witnessed the Chrysler team testing.
No one could believe they would use a ute. About 15-20 years ago this ute turned up in Revesby at my mates mech workshop for a service. The young guy driving it was aware it was a bit special but it was pretty rough,he worked somewhere local as a boiler maker.
As with all good stories he never came back with the ute again, maybe it's in a shed.I think it would be worth some big dollars because of it's history.
-
Sweet ride Frosty big job ahead of you ,look forward to seeing it finished .
-
Have heard about the ute story not 100% sure on the details though I seen the story on moparmarket.
Thanks Hilly looking forward to getting it done the old bloke I bought it off the owners dad is keen to see it done too he was the last bloke to drive it I will go back when it is done and let him take it for a spin again.
I seriously would have drove past this charger 100 times but I had only noticed it not long ago as I was a passenger and I was just looking out the window and my eyes lit up and I said Dad there's a charger back there do a u turn. ;)
I like my job too because I get to go to so many houses and see so many other blokes toys sometimes I end up coming home late if I get stuck talking cars or bikes to a customer.
-
19 mopars at my 50th 8) 8) 8),Frosty it probably has the "K" frame inserted for that engine,# 2 son had a police charger we stuck a 318 innit, matador ,was charger with webbers went to Italy in a chartered boeing, thats the "famous" poster on the dyno with the extractors glowing transparent cherry red down the firewall & out of sight, mopar made more power from the 6's,they didn't call them lazy 8's for nothing ,ford rumour mill thought up the phase 4 ha ha ,fastest prod "family" car for quite a while(look it up ;D),1st V8 engine in OZ 64,(65?),what did holden have? snigger snigger, even the 1st R series motor was 215,then 225's,go the penta stars, :P
-
Very cool it does have the K frame it is a proper job I wouldn't call mine a lazy 8 though it sounds pretty lumpy has genie extractors another intake manifold and carb etc etc.
I won't be able to drive it for a while though which is a shame I could drive my dads two 8's on my learners but I cant now couple more years to go on the P's.
Having said that I am able to ride whatever size road bike I want now so I don't know how that works can't drive a lazy 8 but can ride a 300+kmh capable road bike. ???
Love Chryslers my mum has a Chrysler 300c tourer with the 5.7 v8 love the style of that thing goes very well too all my family likes cars. :)
Also there are two other chargers I know of here one is a mercury silver 318 auto VH XL and the other is a Limelight VJ 265 4 speed.

That ute was recently in a Aust Muscle Car mag and is currently undergoing a full restoration. A very unique part of Mopar history in this country. I could check which edition if you like.

A mate of mine when I was young his father was head mechanic at chrysler australia when they had the factory at Revesby, last time I was in sydney I think the factory was called Goyen controls. He also had the wheels from Alvin Purple's charger on his blue chrysler sedan family car and also had a race motor from I think it was Leo Geoghans chanel 9 sponsered charger. He used to bring lots of valiants home before they were even in the dealers.Looks a bit rough frosty but by looking at some of your bikes it will turn out a treat, those wheels are getting rare as well and becoming sort after don't change them keep the updates coming. My uncle used to work down the road from the old chrysler factory at a place wich I think is still there Stevo's smash repairs uncle was a tow truck driver and they had the fastest tow truck in the area wich I think was chrysler powered that was 30+years ago.Another mate dave sammut owned a wreckers in St Marys he ownes and loves old valiants he has a very quick tunnel rammed 360 charger maroon with chrysler by chrysler big chrome front,a drifter van all original body and paint in immaculate condition never been restored but has a shit hot 318,and a very quick old yellow dodge tow truck.Don't know if he still has the tow truck as he sold the wreckers a few years ago.cheers.
-
SIMO,Thanks for that if you can let me know that magazine edition,my mate would be interested I'm sure because it still comes up in conversation at times. I wonder how short it actually is,and whether it would be able to fit a Bully in it. CHEERS.
-
Mine has a chrysler by chrysler grill but I will swap that back to VJ I don't like the CxC front I should be able to sell it or trade for a vj one though.
Going to buy myself a engine hoist and rotisserie and mig and get cracking.

Hi Matador. I have located that information on the Mule ute, it's on page 32 of issue 59 of Australian Muscle Car and it follows up on the big Charger expose they did in issue 58.
I've scanned it for you but can't figure out how to post it up here. I can post pics up but not sure how to post up PDF's. Send me your email address via PM and I will email the article for you.
PS. Here is the grill on my Chrysler :):

That Chrysler is a beast Simo very cool. ;)
I got my 240z today it is very quick in a straight line but needs front end and suspension done as it is handling pretty rough at the moment.

Frosty, thats pretty coooll too mate.
With sex appeal like that, it probably wont be long before we start calling you Crusty. Congrats 8)
-
Frosty cool dato -when i take the Mustang out to classic car races there are a couple of very quick 240Z's
-
Thanks Mick,
My uncle gave me the 240z which was very nice of him as it was his first car it looks pretty good in the pic but it needs a respray and I will do the motor brakes suspension and interior as well and it should be a great fun car to drive around, my uncle didn't want to sell it so this way I will get it done and he can get to drive it again too. :)
Bazza I will spend some $$$ on the motor might buy some triple webers to replace the double su's they don't weigh very much at all so with the inline six a bit worked it should fly, I have seen them with 350 chevs under the bonnet but you wouldn't hold it on the road.
-
Hi Frosty, Tim754 here (been um a bit unwell lately so very quiet ) here is an Ebay item code that shows the new family toy 200747544698.
-
That is very cool Tim I see a few thunderbirds around here great looking cars and 460's are a beast of a motor definitely a good buy at that price too. :)

My nephew just found this in his archives, it's the only known photo I have of this car, wish I had taken more pictures of stuff I owned over the years.
This photo is all the more rare as I hardly ever had the bonnet up on this car.

What model Derek? The 02 era "Pontiac GTO" model or an early classic? It's kind of ironic that I drive a classic Jaguar XJ-S V12 here in Oz. It's some sort of cultural exchange ::).
I was in London in 1980 and after a heady night on the Watneys Red Barrel (awful piss) I walked onto the road out the front of the pub and nearly got run over by a VG Hemi Pacer Valiant. I thought I was seeing things and dismissed it until a couple of days later I saw the same mustard yellow Pacer parked in High st Hownslow.
How many Aussie muscle cars have made it to foreign lands? I know there's a lot of XA-XC Falcon coupes that have made it to America and I once saw an FJ Holden ute at a rod run at Parker Dam in Arizona. I also caught an HK Holden Belmont taxi in Mexico City. It turned out that a shipment of them were dumped onto the Mexican market in the late 60's. Over the next fortnight I ended up seeing 4 or 5 including one station wagon...all taxis.
-
Firko when was that?It speaks volumes for reliabilty of the early Holdens.I always see a couple of magged and dropped HQ,J,X utes and sedans around Bali when we go there.OK for the open road but a bit tricky for around town.Having said that there a plenty of locals getting around in Hummers!
-
I had this for 20 odd years or so, It done the job ;)

Firko when was that?
1978 Paul. The Holdens were old even then and pretty knocked about. I spoke to a taxi driver and he reckoned that many had become taxi's in '68 when they were new and guessed that a dozen or so were still being used by his company 9 years later, not bad for a country noted for the high number of shitboxes on the road. BTW, the HK's were badged as Chevrolet Belmonts. Later on in the trip, a fellow back packer from Oz reckoned he'd seen a HR station wagon earlier in his Mexican travels.
-
Geoff a young bloke a few years older than me who lived around the corner had a new SL/R about 75/76,used to pull the birds something fierce.Did it work for you? When I got my license I stupidly avoided sedans and went straight for a panel van(obviously overestimating my abiltities even then). It was good for when you got to drunk to drive home from parties or the pub and just crashed in the back,or you and 10 mates had to get somewhere.Things might have been a lot different if I'd been behind the wheel of an SL/R...... ;)
-
I owned a few pommy machines that are collectibles now, which one of my mates claimed was odd 'cauze I was always rubbishing pommy sh** box motor cars.
Perhaps I spoke from experience!.
When I get the tecnique for scanning slides [not doing slides I find that awkward nowdays also] I will show some on here.
I will add that some of the British vehicles I've owned I would dearly love to get back
cheers pancho.

That's a sweet lookIng HR with Monaro look fluted guards. I had a HR panel van,192,x2 headers and twin stormbergs. There's a black HR ute outside a panel shop on Victoria rd west ryde at times. I think the same one was on parramatta rd taverners hill (beefies to you Firko) for many years.Back in the day I wanted a HR X2 wagon with a 4 speed, as an 18 year old apprentice I didn't have enough cash to buy it.A HR is on my bucket list.

The SLR was 9 years old when I picked it up, the birds I hung around with back then didn’t really know what it was so it didn’t help me that much.
I did the panel van thing too, I had a HK before I got the SLR.
Yeah it could be handy at times but it would often work against you with the chicks.
They would all think I was only after one thing.
I was only after one thing, but I didn’t want them to know that.
I think leaving smelly old riding gear in the back probably worked against me too. ::)
Did all sorts of things to that van trying to make it go fast and handle good. 192, Yella Terra head, extractors, Cam, 5 speed Sigma box, heavy duty sway bars etc. I even fitted Monaro guards to make it go faster too.
It was all in vain, the SLR was bog stock and it would run circles round most things on the road, I realized then how much time and money I had wasted on the Van.

Frustrated look probably came from trying to adjust the timing only to find that the retaining bolt that held the Dizzy down was impossible to fit a spanner on.
That motor was a tight fit in the Torana.
It ran okay so I just left the timing as it was

love it ;)

Is that land barge yours Tim? That's a cool old T-Bird, is it a '72-74 model? I had a 66 model when I lived over there and it was like driving an aircraft carrier. I really wished I'd have bought it home with me. That one looks to be in cherry untouched condition, to the point that the paint would probably come up with a decent cut and polish. The interior leather looks pretty intact, something rare for old American cars. Cool ;D
-
Hi Firko , 1976 Last of the truly giant series six 7.6 litre "Big Birds" yep it is original and bog stock even the sunroof but the paint is rat shit ,the photos make it look much better than real life. $6600 +$400 freight to our door, (My younger son paid for it and is financing the resto as a pressy to me.... :)
The series six Thunderbirds * ran from 1972 till August the 8th 1976 this one is only 8 weeks off the run end. The replacement series sevens ran 302cid engines and lost literally a tonne of lovely blubber. ( Something about fuel economy... sad)
* They are in fact a version/clone of a two door Lincoln Continental Mark IV.
Hope to drive (sail) the Land Yacht to Broadford HBBB next year. Cheers Tim
$6600 Matching chassis and engine numbers, only 79000 miles since new. Try to buy a two door Big Block Aussie V8 Holden ,Ford ,Chrysler of the that era in the same running condition for that price...... :D
-
Now that's cool, Tim! ;D
Makes my old Benz that gets 24 litres per 100kms look cheap..............
Just wondering if your son might be interested in being adopted? :D
Here's my latest.......

I needs a BIG tidy up, but it drives well.

Adopt him!!!!! Free to good/lousy home more like it :D
You are physically able to fit a Smart Car 4Two on the bonnet of the Thunderbird!!!!!
-
I love this 'Beige Camry Free Zone' ;D.
For some reason I've always thought Merc station wagons to much cooler than the sedans. That one looks pretty good Tony...Deisel?
You're going to have a hoot in the T-Bird Tim. There's an old bloke around these parts with a '75 Lincoln Continental in absolutely pristine original shape. I struck up a conversation with him at the gas station one day and he told me he also had a rusty '76 T-Bird under a tarp in his yard that he'd bought for $1000 for parts. Once he got it home he didn't have the heart to break it up and was undecided what to do with it. He told me it, like his Conti was RHD and had been in the country since new. I still see the old fella and his missus cruising in the Conti on weekends.
-
76 T Bird wrecker under a tarpaulin ;) If you come across him again Firko perhaps you may mention me...Amazed at the amount of nos parts for these USA oldies. Seat belts compliant with Australia regulations? no problem $150 the pair from the US in a week! Will not be converting it to RHD, you are not required to in Australia for many vehicles now. Going for full Victorian rego and insurance so will have imported vehicle inspection (VASS cert) and report, but having been manufactured before 1978 and in stock form that is by far far the easiest review.

I've got a 53 Packard straight 8 Clipper Deluxe that I want to sell.
Mechanically restored and 90% complete but body & interior is rough.
I'll take some photo's when I drag it out of storage if anyone is interested.

Brilliant! Firko it is indeed the last of the" Jade Group " specials. Hence the standard electric* sun roof with white leather trim. The Jade velour trim had been dropped late in the series.
* Has electric everything, like windows (including the vent windows!) seats ,sunroof ,aerial, boot release, 8 track cartridge player... ect ect..and has believe it or not the first production ABS brake sensing system!

I run a Monaro as my daily drive. No-one here knows what it is!
And thats in the UK isn't it?
What year Monaro would that be?
Last of the vz's. Great car. Very popular at fuel stations and with my tyre dealer.
Seems wherever I park it I meet a new Aussie mate.
Blame my old man, he had a couple of V8 valiants in the 70s for some reason, I thought they were great,at least until he bought a Plymouth Fury...
-
I love that classic Holden look of the bonnet underside being partially painted black!! :D :D ;)
Holden must have run that black on the underside of the bonnet for many models as I had quite a few Holden’s over the years and they all had it.
There were some models that they didn’t put it on properly because it would wash off easily when washing the motor but most of them they used some sort of superior technology to apply it because no amount of pressure washing or degreaser would ever remove it.

Either model though will pass anything except a fuel station

Derek..were those Valiants Aussie made items or US? If they were Aussie it might point that the VF Pacer I saw might have been a part of some sort of export drive to the UK by Chrysler Australia in the early 70's. I was watching an old episode of Minder once and the evil villain was driving a VG VIP around East London...white with black padded vinyl top . (When was the last time anyone saw one of them on the road here? I had one new in '71 and the roof pillars had rusted by '74. The foam padding under the vinyl top held water and the rest was history.)
Did you import the Monaro yourself or were they released in the UK? I recall Top Gear doing a bit on them and Clarkson did his usual slag job while finally reluctantly admitting that it wasn't so bad (for an Australian car).
-
What about the 2 door VG hardtop with the extended rear pillars ?Mexicana?or some such name?I also seem to remember top gear did a "work truck shootout" with "Kenny"in a GTS ute and Clarkson behind the wheel of a Euro highside van with some kind of F1 engine in it.Needless to say the Euro van won.
-
a friend mine has a 1981 corvette which he wants to sell.
it was his late fathers and has gen 5600 miles on it.it is right hand drive and has a targa top.it is regoed in nsw and has never been out of rego.won lots of trophies in the 80s which will go with the car.
pm me for details

Firko, it's Dick here not Derek, you are getting old and muddling your KSI's up!A few hundred VY and VZ Monaros, both Holden and HSV, were imported and badged as Vauxhalls over here. Madly expensive new, I bought mine 11 months old with 6000km on it for 60% of new price. Most of the lads seem to want to boost Aussie exports by buying all the Holden badges to go back on, but I can't be arsed with that- rather waste the money on fuel! Clarkson is actually big 'ro fan, bangs on about them regularly. Top wheels.
As for the valiants, no idea what model but defo mid 70s pure Aussie. One was bronze/copper colour with a White vinyl roof. Tasteless...

last month on the way from cornwall to cheltenham on the m5 a holden ss ute passed us and then it was gone pedel to the metal
poxy 4cyl couldnt keep it in sight

`fraid not. It's a quite spritely 280 petrol. : -) But for a hundred bucks, I think it's ok....... :D
Diesel's are cool, but soooooooo slooooow............
Gonna get my boy one for his first car! 2.5 tonnes and flat out at 90kph........... Perfect!!!!!! I
-
Diesel's are cool, but soooooooo slooooow......
I couldn't agree more. A mate bought a deisel Mercedes...I think it was a '78 model, because his boss supplied subsidised deisel fuel for his Kenworth truck. Whenever he needed to top up the Merc he added it to his truck bill. That car was so slow it was totally tapped at 100kph on the Hume Highway on the way to Canberra. When it hit a hill it'd roll over and almost die ;D. He ended up selling it to his son in law who stuck a 400 small block Chevy and turbo 400 in it.
That 280's a steal for $100 Tony. Try the small block Chevy option on it!

PS the 305 cid Chevy is the easy fit in the Mer suds (not the 350)

Any small block Chevy fits the Merc the same.....easily, just like they do in my beloved Jaguars. :-\

DIESEL,the fuel of the gods. My 7.3 F250 doesn't know the word slow or one of our V6 7 speed diesel navara's either(8.2l/100 h/way). I know diesel is dearer,to buy but you go further and a lot of modern work utes only come as diesels.
I also think this payback period of "it's a diesel so it's more expensive so it will take a long time to justify the expense" is a load of crap.
It's written by motoring people who don't have to actually pay for a vehicle or pay for their own fuel.
The servicing cost are also ok providing you don't go to the ''approved''dealer and use good quality oil.

I couldn't agree more, my next car/truck/SUV will probably be a diesel. The difference between these modern diesels and those old Mercs is down to two things...efficient computer engine management and a little thing called a Turbocharger. You couldn't give me a non turbo diesel ;D.

Derek's Dads V8 Valiants and my spotting of a Hemi Pacer in London has sparked up some interest in my finding out if Chrysler Australia officially exported to the UK. I found the following piece on

Michael you've come a long way from the young bloke doing up a GT80 and drooling for a TM400.....great work. Hpws the GT80 coming anyway?
-
I have a 1971 tm400 in the shed now too Firko it is in bits I just need to get another case for the motor the gt80 is in my mates house I rode it up his road and he was pretty happy when I rode it in his driveway.
He gets it out and starts it every now and then I think it has like 600m on the speedo now and I think he is going to take it to a few bike shows as well.

These (http://i1069.photobucket.com/albums/u473/walter883/m3013009_zps81d8360c.jpg)are 'collector cars!
The Phaeton on the left was my dads supercharged 852 Auburn. Very rare in oz as the yanks came over and bought them cos most came over here.
cheers pancho.

Rear view. This car is not the real thing. My dad owned it in its original state, a 1929 speedster which the buyer wrecked in my opinion to make it look like the later model.
Rare as.
pancho.

The best looking car I ever owned, along side my late brothers TC.
Sent me broke with blowups.
I suppose thats bound to happen when one does 70mph full lock slides on tar roads!

cheers Dale.

Yes the John Goss came in two colour variants always white base but either blue green accents they were all 302's nice car seems to be a few still around I reckon because they were John Goss Special people kept them in nice nick.
But even people make JGS mock ups which seems weird the only thing I dont like on that car is the gt badge.
Oldskool that is a very nice corolla I like some of the early toyota's especially the celica's. :)
-
Thanx frosty it has 92000 original k's full log book history stamped by toyota dealer gets attention every where I take it and it drives like new.
Can't wait to see photos of your charger when finished should be the goods.

I am slowly got the protection package on and new indicator switch in I try to do something every week on the passenger side the chrome protection strip is dipping a bit from the front guard to the door but the holes were there I might be able to sneak it around a few mm's but the strip is only like 15mm wide so it can't move much it is one of those things I would notice but maybe not others.
I have the headlining to put in and door and backseat top vinyl to put on I just need to do it get cracking and do it here is a pic of the side protection strip I tell you it is scary putting them on you really have to belt them onto the plastic clips that hold them and there is a bolted clip on each one so they cant be stolen atleast one thing I don't have to worry about is striking bog as there is none in the car.
My 240z is still at the panel beaters I am still undecided on colour I was thinking going red again but I have lately been thinking of a pearlescent white.

Mate of mine bought a John Goss special for his first car when he was 18. he rolled it and flipped it end over end. The only part he could salvage was the gearbox. He said the last thing he remembered was looking at the speedo doing 120mph, just before he fell asleep. He and two other mates walked away from the wreck, one had a bit of concussion. He hitch hiked back to Melb' and bought a XB GT351 the next day.
-
Very lucky lads, and maybe a bit of body strenght shown on the coupe's part, glad all were o.k. but geez what a waste of a classic.Im also looking forward to seeing the charger up and about Frosty,i like the colour too,i'll find the pic of the one at Lancefield

found it after a bit of searching photobucket(too many pics)
cheers Dale.

Could it be said that the John Goss special might well be one of the rarest FORD collectables of that era? I have only ever seen one genuine one in the flesh and that would have been over twenty years ago. A very smart looking and unique car being a coupe and not a GT. Not overdone, and a little on the conservative side with the 302 being the only size engine that they arrived with.
-
well havent been on vmx for a while now due to my 2 new hobbies one may not be classic yet but was my first car

the hq is a major project but the vl is getting there
-
That is a nice one Dale I am definitely going with white interior I was half thinking of going black but I reckon it will go well with the exterior colour and that is what it was originally.
I only have the one mirror I will see if I need one on the passenger side when I get it done can always add one but it didn't come out with it that was an option.
Nice cars Caps what is your plan on the vl my favourite holden is the vl walkinshaw I don't really care to much ford holden chrysler I do have a preference to ford and chrysler but then I also have the datsun so I am someone who isn't a die hard for one marque.
-
its actually getting a 383 ci ls1 and goin for a stock outside look
-
Cool sounds good make sure to post some pics as you go.
-
will do its at my mate pannel shop now so just waiting now lol
-
Love the colour of your charger frosty and its coming along nicely.Caps 383 stroker and stock look will be a nice sleeper, good to see someone doing something different from the boring old rb30 turbo in a VL.Don't know why but I was thinking mazda mx5 motor and box in my corolla when the 3k dies,I suppose just something different from the 4age or ca18 that everyone shoves in corrolla's either that or rebiuld the original motor with a small solid cam,bit of head work, extractors and 38mm webber.I kinda think its to good of a car to chop up and its a matching numbers car.
-
its allways a shame seeing a matching numbers car cut up bu i still prefer a mild hot rod over a concourse resto
-
I saw a John goss special last year at Moto GP phillip island. I think it was that one as the one i saw had simmons just like that. I spoke to the owner he said that the only non genuine thing was it had a 351 not the 302 - i reckon a could work with that...
Really nice car an sounded like great value for money too.

My little corolla got reversed into by one of the trucks were I work.A company comes in once a week and washes our trucks and one of there employees reversed into my corolla pushed it about 10 feet and turned it sideways $4300 damage got paid out by there insurance and sold the corolla as it wasn't on a writen off register a young bloke that had a project one bought it and is rebuilding it with bits off his project car.So I went out and bought a hr special sedan light blue with white roof, original hustler mags with the spokes painted the same blue as the car,186 with power glide auto original bench seats retrimed with cloth inserts and rear venetian.I've had it lowered get proper white walls(not the paint on crap) fitted this week when I can get to the tyre place and custom plates have been ordered and on their way(OLI967) with no centre diamond seperater one off payment up here no annual fees.I'l throw some photo's up when it stops raining.Cheers.
-
That is no good about the corolla but at least it is still getting put to good use not just scrapped.
My datsun is nearly ready to be painted whenever my panel beater decides he wants to finish it up not much to do to the body now all the rust is gone just a couple of bumps left to sort out.
