The rule book is questioned on a regular basis, particularly at the moment. The old alloy optional arm that has been has been done 20 to the power of 10 times thus far. Then in another thread about being able to use 43mm forks out of a pre 85 bike because there are legal ones in the form of a Yamaha, so why not the 43's out of a cr. Basically the same thing. Then there is the one that is a real ripper in my eyes and unbelievable that one would actually even contemplate let alone ask on a public forum and that is making a 91 model ATK into an evo bike.
I for one am sick to my back teeth of people bitching on here about the rules we have and will sit in front of their P.C. for hours on end to argue the point yet won't do anything about it to change the rule/s that are supposedly so wrong.
So the optional arm is legal. Passionate about it? Want to run yours? Do something about it. And on a side note to that, there WILL be another 20 hoping it does become legal so they can run that once unusable c swingarm sitting in the corner, just waiting to get modified.
Now the 43mm fork example. I kind of agree that there would be little advantage, especially if using an '81 450 front end or even an '82. I do feel there would be an advantage if an '83 250/480 front end was used as they are a better fork and brake than an '81 yz250/465. But aside from that, the big picture, forest for the trees mentality, which does not seem to be thought about and clearly that is because of the personal agenda of the person that wants the rule change or a relaxing of the rule because he has that front end sitting in the corner ready to bolt into his cr250 for e.g. But the main reason from my perspective, as I have no agenda, is that with every little relaxation or part that really shouldn't be on the bike turns into the next gaol post that can be moved. In the end, it's Dutch twin shock ( which should be Euro twin shock as they seem to be all doing it). So after letting the 83 front end slide, the next guy will cut the disc mounts of a set of huge conventionals and retro fit a drum brake front end on. Then another guy will turn up with his non linkage 91 model ATK with mod's to 'fit' the evo criteria. Evo is a technology class to cover the range of twin shock bikes that a year cut off cannot do. Clearly that was why it is that way but there are those that want to look at the rules to suit themselves, then interpret the rules to try and suit their own agenda. Looking at their bike that common sense says doesn't fit in,as a lawyer and trying to manipulate the wording to make it acceptable to have a bike fit in the class they want to run it in.
This also extends to era's and riding up classes which was the last straw for me writing this. Again there are eras written into the rulebook. To separate them.
that is the essence of vmx. pre75 bikes racing together etc etc. Not some all in bring one bike because it's too much work to run two or wash or prep or can't afford vmx meeting. I know only too well I'm not going to win friends with this post and why is that? Opinionated? A prick? Some guys and Victoria will say yes but hey, shit happens. It's so obvious (to me at least) that this is the only real problem with the rules as they stand, bar a few small tweaks such as the alloy rm arm say.Yes there will be others but this is not what the post is about.
Now I've used actual posts as examples and I don't even know some of these guys and am not writing this as a personal attack on the person but more on the mind set of them and others that agree for whatever their reason is.
So, try your hardest to make your own opinion count rather than a bitch....
And read it twice so you don't go off half cocked.
Happy Easter! :-*

You quite finished.
RE : 1977 Suzuki RM 125 B optional aluminium arm. " Passionate about it, Want to run yours? , Do something about it." Your words.
What do you think I have been doing the last 3 months? I have had one meeting with a very high ranking MA official to date ( who by the way cannot see a problem with it) I have two oral testimonials saying they had this arm fitted in 1977. I have 2 parts catalogues 1976 and 1977 showing its existence since November 1976. I have numerous photos of B models fitted with this arm. I have even sent Suzuki Japan an email seeking availability prior to 1978. So you see Brad I have done a bit more than just sit here and type away.
Sure you can pick holes in this , anybody could. What I am trying to do is prove it is either legal or it is'nt. Nothing more. Nothing less
I am not interested in debating this post, just letting you know how it is

Ted Brack

I don't know you Ted let alone know what you are up to. This particular debate started in at least 2009, most probably earlier. To be honest I wasn't singling you out either. There are lots of guys that are angry about this particular item and are prepared to spend hours on here bitching about it but have not taken the steps. I see you only joined in 2012 so maybe you haven't been part of the forum long enough to have been witness at a guess. Good for you in taking the steps.

Opinionated? A prick? Well one who phrases themselves to be taking on an entire state.....yeah people could be forgiven for thinking exactly that of you. You suggest we "read your post twice before going off half cocked", I can only offer the same advice. :)

I debated whether to reply to this or not, but as the above was my post I thought it might be better to explain the reasoning behind my post. My initial post was done in what I thought was a tongue in cheek fashion and I thought others would be able to see it that way, but obviously I was wrong.
I realise the written word makes it hard to convey some subtleties, maybe I should have used more emoticons ::) ;D ;)
Now as Brad says he doesn't know me, but what sh#ts me is that he knows even less about my mind set.
I know I don't have the "cred" of others on the forum, but I do know what the basics of the rules are and would defer to the rules and those on here who are more knowledgeable than myself before proceeding with any modifications and I would never present a bike that I knew didn't comply with the letter or the spirit of the rules.
Also, what is the issue of riding up a class? If it fills the grid, but not at the expense of actual bikes for that class, what is the issue? Not everyone can afford or justify 2, 3 or 4 bikes.
I hope this gives some clarity around the reasoning behind my initial post.

Because that's all it deserves. I pretty much answered you in the other thread about riding an EVO bike in pre 85.
I think you're actually going off the deep end fella. At the end of the day 99% of us moron Victorians couldn't give a fork as to what swingarm is on whoever's bike.
This is a non professional sport. Nobody is going to get a ticker-tape parade for winning the 2013 pre 65, one legged, leading link 175 class. We do it for fun.
As much as you bunch love casting aspersions as to my mental state I'm quite happy that I don't make vintage motocross bikes my entire existence or spend all night in front of the computer (instead of spending the night with the wife) delivering some long winded, self-absorbed wank about how the rest of the world is so forked up because people don't share the same obsessed view on VMX as I do.
Don't rubbish us for how we run our state series. Mind your own f ucking business.

It was obvious I was going to get you off side by including you. You wrote that you wanted to fit a bike that for one doesn't fit in the vintage scene as it stands but also to go as far as putting it in Evo which is just wrong. So you are saying it was tongue in cheek? Ok. In the same way you then want to ride it in pre 90, as a flow on, the same could be said to lots of 90 model bikes I would think. Technology wasn't changing in the way it was in the early eras. From my side of the pc all I see is someone that wants to buy a 91 but jam it in somewhere so he can ride a bike he has / wants to throw money at.
I thought I explained my view regarding riding up a class. Vmx in it's essence is era racing. Most get that but some others just want a cheap ride. You can only afford one bike or only want to wash one bike? Great, so come racing with your one bike and ride the one class. In the two clubs up here, BMCC will have an evo class and then an all in evo class etc. They only cater up to evo so have some room to move. QVMX has a one bike class, for those with one bike.
Even in modern mx you don't see anyone riding up a class. Vmx is as cheap or as expensive as you want it to be. 'I can't afford more than one bike' is not an argument, it's just your financial status.

Fair enough. Seems I've done the wrong thing again. I must say that I am very passionate about the sport I love and winning a trophy has nothing to do with it. I'm fond of anything I like. If I pull this thread now I would feel like a coward though. I mean what I say. I think it would be a crying shame if the scene got watered down just to get bums on seats, be it cutting a bike up to fit an era, too late a bike to fit anywhere, or all in run what you brung deal. Maybe too passionate.
Maybe I will let others vent at me to be fair and let those have their two cents worth, then lock it down and let it die a quick death.

I really do not have an opinion weather B should be able to run an ally swingarm as i don't know enough about the the translation of the rules or about RM125B .
What i have seen in other forms of motorcycle competition is when rules are changed every season it creates a lot of financial burden on the bike owners to swap things to and fro either to bring the bike within the new rules or to upgrade the bike to remain competitive. In my view, this happened a bit in the screamin eagle drag racing series over the past 10 years or so. End result: coupled with other influences this year there is no separate drag racing series for Harleys.

For sure it was.
I still feel I have valid points. It was also to much to ask for at least some serious discussion on the matter it seems. Are they too valid that the best defence is to shoot me down on a personal level straight up? I did say the same to you (pills) after pages of you complaining about the arm not being legal and why. I agree it should be legal but we all know by now that complaining on here is not what needs to be done to change it. The alloy arm on here was due to that thread and the here we go again. Looks like Ted is onto it so hopefully it will finally be put to bed.

Is this an opportunity to debate a subject close to many hearts in Australia ?! or just an opportunity for the usual "suspects" to throw shit and gain revenge for past battles lost??

Talking of 'suspects' trying to fight lost causes, you wouldn't know anyone by the name of "RM500 Man" would you mate? He's a very 'suspect' character.
Likes to send threatening PM's and then disappear only to re-surface under a different name after having some moral enema...... ;)

Right on both counts.Yer we need another "opportunity" to discuss the bogus rules and yer Nimmo used the shit that 090 through on my RM125B arm thread and through it straight back at him.Forking brilliant!

Someones out of pills.
that's what I said to be exact. 7 pages and about 16 replies in your own thread about something you are passionate about. After all these years and so many threads and posts on the same subject, why not put all that effort to good use and get it sorted is all I am saying here. That particular thread was in response to mainlines reply where you completely twisted what he wrote to have another spit.
Monts response was medium funny, certainly not brilliant. :P

Some rules in this sport, that I am very passionate about , spoil things for me and just make me want to go away and do something else. The class that I was most interested in is pre '78, because that is the place in time that I started racing. The bikes of that period are the ones that I have the most attachment to, even though I own and enjoy bikes across the spectrum from pre '75 through to pre '90 (and modern trailbikes as well). I own five '77 model motocross bikes, that I had a desire to own from back in the day, that I refuse to reverse engineer to meet the stupid 9 inch travel rule. So I won't be entering another national title meeting in pre '78 class while ever this rule is in place.
Probably more than half of the '77 model MXers had more than 9 inches of suspension, so I think that the limit should be 10 inches. It defies logic to me that someone would buy an older, less competitive bike in a class (probably because they are cheaper) and expect later and more advanced machines to be modified backwards to meet inferior standards, supposedly to make things more fair. Wouldn't it be more sensible the other way round, by having the older bikes modified with later model suspension components to make them more competitive ? The rules for this class are pretty much a word for word copy from the AHRMA Historic class. If you are going to plagiarise someone elses rules, you should at least make sure that they are good rules to begin with.
As far as the rules for Evo class forks are concerned, couldn't the rules just be worded that you can use any conventional forks that were originally from a bike manufactured with a drum brake front wheel ? Wouldn't this stop anyone using forks from a disc braked bike and descending into the depths of the dreaded Dutch twin shocks ?
The rule regarding exhaust pipes in pre '75 and earlier classes, having to follow the original line of the manufacturer, needs to be looked at as well.

Reading Throu this Thread Makes me wonder wonder
what Happend to the saying ( Within the Spirit of
Things )
The Rules should State as Manafactured for sale at
the time .
Lets Face it most Mods were done by Race Teams
or Importers not by the Factories for general sale at
the same time..
A 78 Factorie bike useualy did not come out for general
sale untill the following year or two.

Hmmm, speaking of not wanting to tow the line or folks bucking the system.....I believe it was requested that this thread was locked? To which the thread starter replied "fine"?? Correct me if I'm wrong?? Guess some people just can't stick to their word or do the right thing all the time aye
-
Sure I will correct you. I have the blessing of mod 1. I am allowed to do what I want by the rules to lock or unlock as I wish. If the thread is not worthy it will be canned or put in the dumbgeon by those that rule the forum. It will be the likes of you that will force their hand, not me. This is a very topical subject about guys wanting to change or not abide by set rules for their own selfish reasons.
While i am here I might add that the rm swing arm bit was more an add on and not really relevant to what I was trying to convey. It was meant as a passing note just stating that someone that feels passionate about the subject should put their efforts into doing so. As ted is. As its been going on for 5 -6 years that I know of ( how long I've been on the forum).

Moral question for anyone that can be bothered answering…
If you have a 125 and you find out that it has been bored out to 150cc
Would you ride it in the 125 class or the 250 class?

250 class.
I bought a parts lot off a guy and there was a Yamaha (dt?) 175 barrel with the cc ground off. He proceeded to tell me he was going to put it on a 125....

It's only cheating if you get caught yeh?
No I would not run something as obvious as a 150 in the 125 class, I'd be uncomfortable running a 130cc but would if I only had that oversize piston available.

Going on past experiences Geoff.....depends if your Victorian or not.....the Ned Kelly's of Australia......and he was hanged wasnt he?....didnt tow the line....maybe thats what we should do on the forum?....choose your poison.....hanging/ the French way/ leathal injection of HL500 used sump oil/ stoned to death with Hodaka parts/ have your limbs ripped apart by Maico 490's (you might survive this one as they will probably break down ;D)/ run over by a gaggle of chinesse chinka's /dragged by Wasp (probably break down too). ::)

Geoff!! Thankyou!! This is exactly the point i raise time after time whenever the eligibility of a particular bike or part on that bike is raised and debated until the cows come home!! Everybody worries soooo much about alloy swing arms and modern shock internals,, blah blah blah but whenever i bring up the very same point as you have here it goes unheard. I could race a stock looking YZ250D in pre78 with 20,30 or more cc than stock and no one would ever know nor question me, but ride a bike with an alloy swing arm and they'll bit having fits in the pits!!! :-\
-
I ride a pe175 in the evo250 class. Despite the fact it has an RM125 seat and tank and most people wouldn't know, I couldn't ride it in the 125 class.
-
If you want to cheat badly enough, it can be done. A cheats down fall is they also need to brag/ tell someone how clever they were in getting away with it. So only a small percentage would really get away with it.

I did the same on Bills bike in NZ. It was in the same guise.

foolish train of thought.
hopefully a protest will land on your lap for all to see...
somethings stick out like dogs balls (external parts) and some dont (internal parts).
thats exactly why some folk get away with things for longer than others and some never get caught.

Cmon, guys. Isn't our sport mostly about fun?
I personally would not know what arm is allowed on what bike & don't particularly care.
I would not know the difference riding with Moly versus Alloy swing arm & I bet 99% of other riders wouldn't either.
To the spirit of the rules sums it up. We (Viper) use to let YZ125G (1980) run in the pre 80 125 class even though they were a big step up from the E & F.
Didn't care. Used to do the same for the 1980 RM125. Again, didn't care. (Yes, I rode that class) (Used to get hosed by a guy on a 73 CR)
I suppose for Nationals & the like we need a "Line in the sand" but for interclub, like Viper for example but I am not speaking for them, some "Own Rules" could apply.
My view, if it doesn't give a huge advantage, let it go. Alloy arm looks better but could most of us tell the difference? I think not.
Leaving Evo aside, if it was available for that model, OK then. Not talking about what works bikes had on them, what was available to production bikes. Did someone in the day put Yamaha forks on a RM? Possibly but why?
We let people go overboard with engine internals, fork mods (emulators), suspension kits (Race tech valving etc.), new wheels & spokes (stronger & lighter than OEM) etc. etc. etc.
I realsie lots of stuff is no longer available & it would be stupid to stop someone riding just because they had a 2013 clutch lever & I also realsie this is allowed for as a incidental part & can be used.
What is to stop someone buying a 1975 lathe & milling machine & making lots of stuff as I'm sure some did. As I said, spirit of the rules", & line in the sand. Weren't DT's air cooled, drum brake etc. till 1991?

I too ran a 175 in a 125 frame but it was my 2nd bike for which I rode 250, evo, etc.
It was an IT175 motor, that from the outside were almost identical to the 125, in a YZ125E frame.
The only reason I did it was because I couldn't afford, or find, a 250 at the time. I honestly believe not many, if any, would have picked it. We had a guy who had a TL125 which he had stretched to 185, we let him ride the 125 class because it almost made the bike competitive. He had fun, main thing.
-
I could easily have raced my 325cc Maico in the 250 class but I guess my Catholic Marist Brothers education in moral accountability prevented me from doing it. I will however put my hand up and admit to racing my 350 Maico in the 250 class at a Penrith club day back in 1991 or so but I was that paranoid that someone would spot it (it's easy if you know what to look for) I blabbed it to everyone who'd listen. The opportunity to build a 175cc cheater recently motor arose when going through the stash of MX125 engines and parts destined for out pre 78 Trackmaster framed special, I found a clean MX175 barrel. The guy I got the stash from had raced his MX 125(disguised as a YZ) with the 175 barrel in the 125 class for years and only removed it after his son, the guy actually riding the bike, complained that he hated cheating. I know of a couple of stroker MX250 based 320cc bikes racing back in the early vintage days and how many XL250 Hondas are taken out to 305cc?............It all comes down to how much you're prepared to sacrifice morals in a bid for podium glory.

I could race a stock looking YZ250D in pre78 with 20,30 or more cc than stock and no one would ever know nor question me, but ride a bike with an alloy swing arm and they'll bit having fits in the pits!!! :-\
foolish train of thought.
hopefully a protest will land on your lap for all to see...
somethings stick out like dogs balls (external parts) and some dont (internal parts).
thats exactly why some folk get away with things for longer than others and some never get caught.
to knowingly flaunt an obvious inelidgable (spell check) part/machine and expect for the rules to bend to you is in my opinion against all our sport stands for.
i've read too many of your posts Rookie...
fool
i'm off to the shed to bolt some upside down forks onto my XT600...
Dear Vandy, give up the name calling. Suprisingly enough it was Brad who pointed out to the manner in which my post was intended to be comprehended. Thanks Brad, think I'll sit this one out from here on in.

It seems a new wave of enthusiast are coming along with the old im not competitive so i should be allowed tho ride my 2013 crf 250 in pre 65s ::)
Seen em come and seen em go ( they dont usually stick around when they dont get their own way ) but at the end of the day we still have a set of rules that work pretty bloody well ;)
Their not perfect and need a bit of fine tuning but generally they work well .
The most common squawk that accompanies the "im not competitive " justification is the " but it gets bums on seats" squawk followed by the "its only for fun" and "you people take it to seriously" squawk ::)
Well if its only for fun , you can be just as uncompetitive on an era correct bike and there are still plenty of era correct bikes out there for those arses looking for a seat ;)
Its an attitude thing , i believe some people will try to create issues wether its Vintage MX or underwater Muff diving thats how they get their buzz ::)
So yes we do need rules and IMHO the MA rules are pretty good .
Ted is going through the appropriate channels to get the RM swinging arm accepted , Rather than just whinge about it on here and do SFA he has used this forum to gain information and share his experiences while going through the correct channels :) and all power to him .
At the end of the day a gate drops and a flag falls , its a sport and sports need rules .
Even non competitive events CDs and the Broadford bonanza have rules ;)
If you dont like rules run your own events on your own property ;) im no expert but theres probably local council rules you have to abide by even then ;D

Moral question for anyone that can be bothered answering…
If you have a 125 and you find out that it has been bored out to 150cc
Would you ride it in the 125 class or the 250 class?
Geoff!! :-\
Well, actually my point was that if you are happy to keep within cubic capacity classes then why not keep within year cut off classes?
As to fork internals, fat bars (of which I hate to see on vintage bikes), electronic ignitions, adjustable shocks, & fat pipes etc, well my view is that it should be one rule for all. If everyone can use these parts if they want then it is fair to everyone.
The use of later era parts though smudges the line in the sand as there will be others that will be thinking “I would have used that part too if I knew I was allowed to”
-
IMO National level we need to follow the rules to the letter of the law after all we are trying to win that $5 plastic cup, but club level come isn't it about having a bit of fun, give em a FRANKEN Bike class all in, would be better than em siting in the shed....
I like it Davey Crocket :D :D :D

Mate im waiting for a replacment book , the ink ran in mine at the last nats ::) from memory they were trying to get the rule changed that the competitors air tank could could be no bigger than his subjects lungs . This arose as a result of a large influx of Asian competitors whos subjects tend to have smaller lungs ;D

Average Asian assisant , note the reduced lung capacity

Sounds like a great sport. I'm quite proficient at breathing through my ears, it may have its advantages. Probably an expensive sport though. I don't run mine under water but it still keeps me poor!
-
I wonder if the Muff Diving rule book is different for unzud as to ozz???????? mmmmmm
Can anyone clarify this? The waters seam a bit muddy! Hang on I'm thing of Arnhemland..
-
Wet suits compusary in NZ for competitors due to the cooler climate, not compusary for subjects for obvious reasons ;D although it is recomended to get a well fleshed subject as it takes longer for the cold to penetrate . Also a well fleshed subject generally has bigger lungs ;) Maico girl i heard was tendering herself out for the 2014 nats to be held in lake Taupo in conjunction with the NZ ironman :)

I think the only rule is to find a willing muff to dive upon! Lotsa luck! :D

TANGENT ...
you guys are on it ;D
Unless of course you need some rules for muff diving .. hmm now on what basis would we split the classes in this sport?? Years or capacity ;)
-
Just what this thread needed I think a little light hearted humour... Love it..

Simo as a current Titty Title holder i can confirm that the only class splits are weight based ;D
-
Not by size? Big , bigger and kin huge. ;D
-
Muff diving
Good to see we are now talking about a much more agreeable subject
-
i'm definately not goin pre~65 ;D
-

When you get to my age, all I remain competitive in is the large capacity pre 65 class or if really desperate, the pre 70 class ::)
I'd like to set something up for the pre 60 class though. ;D
-
i'm definately not goin pre~65 ;D
Me neither, I think this sport should be kept ' moderns' only
-
So finally I become envied in a sporting group, at my age I don't have to put the diving goggles on for anything older than pre85!!! ;D In age class id be in the 28-35 grid, most of the ones my age haven't even needed a resleeve yet, just a light hone!! :D :D
-
Older classes should be restricted to no more than 4” in the rear for pre 75
Pre 90 can have 12” front or rear
The fitting of optional parts that weren’t around in the day can sometimes be looked upon with envy by some while others like the natural look.
I prefer to avoid ‘Super Cross’

Agreed Bill .. definately need to run classes based on weight but I also think that age classes will get a lot of interest provided we don't call it period class ;D
Well .. someone had to "go there" .. err say it ;D
-
Tell you what .. it also gives a new meaning to taking someone elses entry out for a "test ride" ;D ;D
But I want to be a scrutineer ... pleeeease ;D
-
Just wait till Graheme gets home from work, she's headed straight for the Dumbgeon this one! :D and for none of the reasons we'd have first thought :D ;D
-
How did we get to muff diving? Must be the australasian "down under" thing
-
You queenslanders are very lucky with the assistants you have access to.
