Thanks to Bill Davis of the Texas Vintage Racing Club for the offer to race his dirt trackers in the US. Plan to pick his bikes up in Dallas early July then proceed over 1000 miles north to race at Bike Week in Ashland (half mile) then down to Du Quoin (mile) the weekend after. Got a fair bit to do, to make it happen.
-
Glad to hear you got something organised Pete, I haven't heard back from Bruce as yet but I'll still let you know if I do.
I hope you're going to post heaps of photo's up here, any idea what you'll be riding.
We're all jealous.
-
Good luck you lucky bastard ............. Do 52 proud :)
-
I live about 40 minutes from The Magic Mile. Lots of history and a sweet facility. You gonna have fun.
-
Bill has offered me a choice of 3 or all of his bikes,- MX250B converted to twin shock, 19in spool front, 18in rear(all have rear brake, required in later classes), really looking forward to the Yam, I had one in a Hagon in the day, really sweet motor. He also has 2 X RT1 based bikes, one in a Champion with spool front and the other is his TT bike lowered with front brake. The 360's sound super trick YZ360B ports with reeds, radial heads, 38 Mikuni's etc. Very much in his debt as I am going to drag them over 1000 miles one way. Will try and keep site posted on progress / long way to go yet. Will get away straight after Aust. titles, wife has orders to put me on plane seat next to her - conscious or not.
-
Your a doer Pete, all the doors have opened for you ,make us proud mate. Shame you won't be a the Penrith Charity Meeting.
-
You're right Dave, Pete is definitely a do'er.
We're all are looking on jealously of his trip to the US.
I know you're thinking that this will make your attempt for the Trifecta of wins at the Nepean 20 lapper will be just that bit easier, well think again.
We're sick of you imports coming in and stealing the booty, you'd better be prepared to shed a tooth or a nail this year.
Anyone with a potent pre 75er, drop me a line, we can't let these raids go on.
-
That Nepean Pre-75 (now '85 as well) is a fantastic event, 2 days of laid back racing. Davey won't have it all his way Steve, pre- 70 champ Dion Muirhead is keen to go and wrestle the big Yam for 25laps. Sorry mate another Griffith rider. Check out Chris Jones DuQuoin Magic Mile on youtube;-big place.
-
Geday Steve,
Re the Trifecta that will be a task with or with out(that lucky bugger Pete not being there).I have a ball at the charity meeting ,casual two days & a few beers with the Mafioso around a fire drum is the real appeal & monies raised for a great cause. Hope Nepean has another cracker of a meeting. Let Pete shine & whoop some yankee butt. ;D
-
You're right Dave, the biggest attraction to our sport, for me, is the commaraderie.
Pete is a lucky bugger sure but I'm sure he's worked hard to be in a position to do stuff like that.
He should be a pinup boy for our ageing population.
Hopefully he can, open up a whole can o whoopass on those septics.
-
Thankfully, Bill has been to Australia (was talking to his mate in WA last night) so he is no doubt aware of Australians keen rivalry and sense of humor.
I'll be waving a Texas flag while I'm over there, I may need some back-up.
-
Now Pete, I'm looking forward to pitting you at DuQuoin,....but a Texas flag?! Fly them OZ colors man!....Andy
-
Heading off on Saturday,Bill has invited Colleen and I to BBQ with the Texas Dirt Trackers so looking forward to that on the wend.
Will try and keep the forum updated on progress(via Jim).
Bill has been very busy preparing his Rickman Yamaha 650 for me to ride,as we all know these things don't ready themselves, let alone changing forks and wheels etc to meet eligibilty issues.
I have been told how generous the American people are but Bill Davis has been unreal, thanks mate.

-
Hi pete, You are going to have an absolute ball over there! Very friendly/helpful people. ENJOY!! regards Mark
-
Thanks Guys for all the kind words.
I'm still in debt to The VMX of WA Club, especially Peter and Sue Lawson for their hospitality both times I have come over there to race and my 16 day Hospital visit, but that's another story.
I'm glad I can help Pete & Colleen Lee while they are over here.
I'm not much of a Flat Tracker but luckily I have quite alot of Flat Track stuff.
Pete will have his hands full keeping it all running.Luckily I have plenty of parts too.
I'm sure he will make OZ proud.
For the record:Aussies remind me of Texans who talk funny.
Take care.

Now that you mention it, Slider , there is a resemblance to MR there , but considering what Pete will be riding, the most appropriate Marty Robbins song might be " Big Iron "

Rode at Cactus speedway in Texas last night, not a big meeting, very hot(107 degrees),we had some bike trouble and managed 2 third places (vintage twin class and over 45 years class).
Worked all day today and seem to have cured the problems, leave Bill Davis tomorrow to begin trip north to Ohio to race on the 23rd.
Really enjoying the people and Texas.
See youall

Nailed it, happy as.
2nd in 750 Hotshoe, beat by 24yr old Chad Rall no52 how ironic (his pic is on the trophy)
3rd in over 50 class up to 1988, 2 very well prepared 600 Rotax framers pulled away from the twin.
Got 2 second places in qualifying and ended up being put on the second row (was not happy) but sorted that out before the start.
98 entries, big meeting under lights (pic is practice). big crowd even though it rained after practice.Rapt, even had a flat to repair between races

July 30: Mile
AMA Racing Dirt Track Grand Championships
Location: Du Quoin State Fairgrounds, Du Quoin, Ill.
Rosanna Grzebinski
www.naactionsports.com
Vintage racing expert Don Miller, owner of MetroRacing.com, :o is the technical advisor of the AMA Racing Vintage Dirt Track National Championship Series. Miller said that his goal is to field motorcycles that capture the nostalgia of the past amid the excitement of a modern meet, while avoiding non-traditional modifications that violate the spirit of vintage competition.
"Year two as the AMA vintage dirt track technical advisor is on its way, and I couldn't be more excited," Miller said. "The series fared well for its first year and can do nothing but gain speed. Attendees and enthusiasts gave us some good feedback, and the rules were adjusted so every one can come out and race with us. Season two is going to be great!"
-
Thanks for all the support fellows, the American people have been friendly, generous and fun, Bill and Nancy have been fantastic.Left their place with everything but the sink (opps, have it too). The racing here is very similar to home, the meetings seem a little casual (no machine exam, enter championship on the day, etc) maybe we are from the nanny state.Carn't wait till friday (half-mile) then saturday(mile), 2 more rounds of the AMA vintage champs. Thanks to Jim and Alan for help with web-site.PS. Mitas worked really well, got real hot though (about 90mph on the half-mile, always in top gear) will use the dunlop Bill gave me at DuCouin.Lots of interest here to come over, thanks fellows.

This report from Peter this morning
Mile was an anti-climax,our bike was under-geared an although Bill was all go ahead and give it to it, I decided to just qualify the bike, scored a forth and then a big storm hit the place. The Rickman was running 18/42 conservatively 115mph and about 10mph slower than the lead bikes, fast place.Got a bunch of trophies though,2 for the wins on the half-mile,and another 2 for getting there a day early and entering the Rickman in the AMA Ameteur Grand National Twins Open, that give me the No 2 Plate for 2011. Ametuer National was decided on this week.Fantastic week of racing and great atmosphere, riders all helping oneanother, made some really nice people.
Gunna go an have a break before we go to Kanzas for AHRMA and VDTNA zone championships over 4 meetings and 3 tracks,Colleen willing.

Young Tom Edwards was at DuQuoin racing as well and going real good,he is only 10 and always seemed to be riding up a class to me,still did real well.It was really strange to talk to someone in Australian.
The announcer was a character, nicknamed me "staggers Lee",will post(thanks Alan) some pics of bikes at the mile before it rained, the heat and humidity over 3 days of riding really wasted us so we are heading to the Rockies (Denver) for a break.

This report on the Colby meeting from Pete a couple of days ago
Outlaw meeting in Colby Kanzas last night, Norton tonight, part of a 4 race series.
Part of the farewell to Chris Carr series ($25,000 start money to Chris). Bloody nice bloke meet him in Ashland, came up to me after miserable performance in the first heat and offered some very real advice, made a big differance fro the next heat and finished 2nd.
Fantastic meet, seeing the pro riders going at it for money,10 XR750 Harleys there.Promoter suggested I enter the 750 Vintage Pro Class, Didn't work out for me, poor Qualifying put me on the second row and bikes were just too quick. Also entered the over 50 Vintage Ameteur class, this was combined with the Vintage Ameteur Open which started on front row(8) and over 50's on row 2 (7 riders). Managed a fantastic start and finished 2nd in race, 1st in my class.4 English riders have came over to ride the series(great interaction between us) they struggled, the speed and level of grip on that blue groove surface is staggering.Got to get to track, report 2morrow

Got this report from Pete and Colleen last night
At Norton last night, didn't enter 750 vintage pro class, in this Outlaw series the pro racing are paid around $1000 for the win and the winners are current experts on vintage machines with only a capacity guideline, tyres and suspension seem open slather. Stuck with the Ameteur over 50's.
Ended up 2nd after a bit of a battle, the crazy Aussie was the only rider shifting gears, our bike had mile gearing on (ran out of options) so I used 4th in the turns to get to bounce out then into 5th as quick as possible, Bill's 650 is really doing a great job considering its stage of tune (mild). Might be making me look good as it is so easy to ride.
Off to Stockton to race monday and Tuesday nights to complete the series.

Great photos, great performance....what a great experience mate. What makes it even more astounding is that Pete's down on power, new to that type of surface and type of racing, is way out of his comfort zone and is riding a motocross Metisse which is not really made for flat track against proper dirt track framed bikes.......big effort.

Very sad news from Norton I held back a bit, Vern Johnson died in Turn 3, he was national numbered rider from the 70's. Colleen and I seen the family the next morning, probaby know a bit more than most, very sad. These places are fast and unforgiving, nobody wants to fall,if someone does the race is stopped immediately,eg Colby 0 falls and only 2 in Norton (in the same race,Vintage 750 Pro).
-
Some more news from Peter and Colleen from the Stockton meeting and I'm bloody proud of them and VERY VERY jealous too, Pete's met one of my heros !!!
Sad news indeed ,about Vern, and I'm sure all on here would send their thoughts and condolences to his family.
Sad news we held back from family,Vern Johnson(national pro from the 70's) died in turn 3 at Norton. Not good.
Onto Stockton for the remaining 2 nights of racing.Pat Orman asked me to ride his XL350 based Champion,he is the Top 350 tuner in the states, true, his motors are rockets.Straight after he made the offer I took Bill's bike out and threw it away-fast,not many people fall off, Colby 0,Norton 2,over the 2 nites at Stockton 4.Finger got caught under bar, ouch and have skin off here and there.Colleen's heart still beating, made me a bit of a hero, right in front of everyone.Explained to Pat when I went up to him I would just qualify his bike(gear all tore up),for the vintage 600 am,Pat said hell no win it (similar attitude to Bill) so won the heat and the Main later in the night, his bike is an absolute weapon.Didn't fare so well on Bill's 650 got 5th in main after the fall in heat(still qualified, can't work it out).Great day with Lap of main street, interveiw with comentator after the win and meeting Dave Aldana.4 poms at the meet getting better.Send day 2 in a minute.

Final night of the series, showdown between Carr,Durell and Toons didn't really happen with Chris's bike not able to start so Davy Durrell got the win on the nite,Chris Carr won the previous nite after 12 lap battle passed on the last corner. All be it it was still great racin, big bikes doin 100mph on the half mile, awesome.I rode Pat Orman's XL again, the bloke is a legend, won the heat and muffed the start in main to get 3rd, gave me 2nd place in the Kanzas Fair series, over 50 Vintage Ameteur. It blows me away the old blokes riding over here in this series in the Vintage Pro classes, they fair dinkum fly, they are used to the speed I suppose. Eg 65yrs old Jerry Cheney won the Open Ameteur on his 450 modern framer against kids on DTX 450's, and came from behind, unreal. And someone complained he should be ridin Pro class because he was a Pro 40 years ago, that would pit him against Chris Carr etc.Anyhow that's it for me 9 days racing in the 8 weeks has been fantastic, we were always the first to the circut and last to leave made some great friends we hope to keep in touch with them. Many, many thanks to Bill Davis for making it happen and to Nancy for accepting us into her home.
PS no. 17 is Pats bike and Bill's 33.

Thanks to Pete for the race reports and Colleen for the excellent photos and a big thank you to Bill Davis for looking after our mate and Colleen and Pat Orman for giving him another ride on a very fast bike.
See Ya at The Skids sometime

Great work Pete....I told you Bill was a good bloke!
-
You are right there Firko, heading back to Bills today. Had a couple of days with Larry Kennedy, ex racer from the late 60's, he took me out bass fishin and we caught and released 80 odd in a morning with one of his mates. Larry is Michael Toon's grandfather, a pro rider who has won the DTX 450 class on the Springfeild Mile 3 years in row. Shared a couple of meals together and he is a great young man (22), the mile is on in a fortnight, Colleen and I will be rootin for him.
-
Congratulations Peter, what a great performance and experience. You must have learnt a lot at the Qld Nats.
-
Pete,
I noticed you started out using a trials tyre on the rear but ended up on the goodyear/maxxis type. Any particular reason for dropping the trials?
Cheers,
Steve
-
On the pea-gravel (cracker dust) I'm sure the trials was better (but it does get hot and the mains can be from 6 to 10 laps). At DuQuoin the mile was the day after the half-mile and I decided to make it easy and fit the Dunlop K180 for both races. The tyre thing is a bit up in the air with Maxxis out and no real 18in option (our K180 was pretty old and hard, but they don't make them anymore).I wasn't game to use a trials on the clay mile, you run pressures of 20psi +
-
Cheers, I am using K180's and have been struggling to work out what tyre pressure works best. After talking to Dave Durelle (via email) it appears as though I have been not running enough air so was keen to get your thoughts. i have heard about Dunlop dropping the K180 but our local Team Moto shop recons he can still get them? Guess I better stock up while he can!
Cheers,
Steve

Had these photos from Pete and Colleen for a few days now, but I've been a bit busy, first shot is of Pete's trophies with Bill Davis's Rickmann Yammie

Great stuff, great trip and what a yarn !!

Nancy & I just got home from having one last dinner with Pete & Colleen Lee.We took them to a Hotel near the Airport that will shuttle them tomorrow for their flight back home.
No finer couple or Ambassadors of Aussie people can be found.
Plus he's a pretty fair rider and Colleen takes some great photos.
Can't wait until We come over next year or they come back over here.
Maybe they'll even let Dave come along next time although I'm not sure he can handle a Yamaha.
I hope they enjoyed the experience as much as we did.
Cheers.

Got these photos from Pete and Colleen this morning
" Back at Bill's place, we visited Texas Vintage Racing Club members HQ,met Joe Edwards and seen his amazing collection. Check out the XR, I can't believe the number of XR's I've seen. Bill took us to Hooters and Fort Worth Stockyards, had a great weekend doin the tourist thing. Head home tomorrow, been a fantastic experience, thanks to Bill an Nancy."

Hey Pete, just gotta comment on the pic on page 8 is that # 6 in front. You have done us proud ol fart. See you for a yarn when ya get back to the Land Down Under CHAMP
-
Looks like he gets rollers as well ;D
-
Bill and co ,,How are our Texas's vmxer's with the summer fires.?
-
Miss Alison !!!
Thanks for the concern.
Everything at my place is okay so far.
The fire is pretty close to one of our members, about 15 miles away but hopefully will not get his property. He says smoke is pretty heavy but that's it so far.
It has been pretty bad for quite a few people and animals here.Ya'll have your share of fires & floods from time to time as we do.
Again thanks for your concern.
We're glad Pete & Colleen made it home safely & we miss them already.
Take care.

Well Captain America, its about time we got to see some more pics of your all conquering trip to the U.S.ofA. Not to mention some stories.eg. whats it like to ride a flat tracker compared to a Hagon Jap etc. and would a top line longtrack bike hold its own with a flat track bike, same capacity eg. 500cc
regards Mark
-
Peter is away on harvest work, I will tell what it was like from his wife's perspective fast and scary, very happy to get him home in one peice. Being in a strange country with only each other and a car with the steering wheel on the wrong side (I didn't drive it) and Peter racing all those meetings (we had agread to around 3) was nerve wracking.I have watched him race since 1975 and at times he rode harder than he should have ie DuQuion to win and Colby after Chris Carr gave him advice on how to ride the groove thing (practiced terrible then 2nd in heat and won the feature).Even the half mile tracks were not in full veiw, hoping he would come around again, lap after lap. Overall, spectaular scenery and enjoyed meeting some lovely people.Colleen.
-
Thanks for a different perspective Colleen, we were all glad he made it home in one piece as well.
He did good the old fella, made the rest of us jealous for a while.
Grasy said he missed his dad.
Steve
-
Peter is away on harvest work,
Now thats a way slower pace than the DuQuion event showed :P Heart stopper, though he did Australia very proud.
Something special to remember 8)

The only regret I have is that I only got to see him race the first one.I'm glad my bike held together for him too.
Nancy & I are looking forward to a return visit for both of them.Maybe we can find a real Flat Track bike for him to ride next time.
Also maybe Grasy can come along too.
Take care !!!!

Geez..Grand news..we'll have to send some more VMX riders over to whoop ass,try to keep up with you flat out dirt trackers ;D
-
Flat Tracker vs Dirt Tracker, got a break from harvest, engine failure on my truck (25G) it will be ready this week. The tracks are the big difference, that clay is real grippy (sprintcar style) and the banking fairly steep and they are big! (half miles). The loose pea gravel tracks would suit a Hagon Jap for example but it would have to run petrol under the US rules so its horses for courses. The half miles are very intimidating, they are serious fast and only a rear brake on a heavy bike it feels like a runaway train, impossible to stop it in a resonable distance.
Alan is going to post some pic's for me,still haven't given up on getting there next year, be great to see people we meet again, the people were really the highlight of our trip. We have heaps of stories about Americans generous nature, even before we opened our mouths. The area we visited is often described as the heartland of America (inland regions), for good reason.
-
Here's some more pix from Pete and Colleen
(http://i854.photobucket.com/albums/ab106/JAP454/Pete1.jpg)
Racing with a bloke named Gary Hite, thought I had him beat but he got me on the last lap, you have to get your head around the length (10/12 laps) of race and not cruize.
Jim Monegan 31 leads Dave Aldana and Paul Covert in the 600 pro at Stockton, Jim (67yrs) really impressed me, a racers racer. Note the first 3 bikes XL 350 powered, Pat Orman prepared, leaving TT's and XR engined things for dead.
Chris Carr,7 time AMA 1 plate, worth the price of the trip just to see the man ride, awsome. Colleen meet his wife and they watched the races together, she still couldn't look when Chris went around the outside of riders. Chris is 44 and any kid on a DTX type(450 MX with limited modifications, the most competitive class) bike can ride against him, doesn't do them any good, he still wins.

First picture is Mike Anderson, second is Dave Atherton (he was in the Springsteen tour back then, he still rides very fast)

-
Thanks for passing the photo's on Foss and of course Colleen & Pete.
Dave Aldana would have to be close to 67 as well, there's still time for you mate and even more for me.
No wonder Chris Carr wins if he rode against #22 in that shot.
Once we pull the helmet on we all look 21 again.
-
Colleen and I have decided to return to the States and have another go, we have done our research and costed it out. Our plans are to buy a motorhome and a pre-75 flat tracker (probably a twin) and do the job properly. As many of the vintage community already know, I have been working fairly hard at luring US riders to come over here and compete.
Its seems a waste if we didn't return and cement the connections we have made there.
I plan to ride the AMA Ameteur Nationals (decided in one week of racing/ short track/ TT/ half mile and mile) at DuQuoin, this meeting will include two rounds of the AMA vintage GNC. Also plan on competing in the CycleZone Kanzas Fair Series (4 days at 3 different half miles within 5 days).
Will be there in July/August, is there anyone interested in coming with us to help with sharing costs?
It would not be all about racing, although at that time there is several GNC flat track meetings close by where we could see the big boys go at it (you will see 'em in the Fair series).
We had the trip of a lifetime the first time, and as i may have mentioned would have been impossible without Bill's help, anyone interested send me a message.Peter Lee.
-
Definitely interested but at this stage it's out of my reach financialy.
Sounds like the trip of a lifetime and it'd be great to see some of them venture out here but we'd have to get some sort of series up & running first, programmed in for say a 4 - 6 week period, something to think about.
If I win Lotto between now & then Pete, I'm in.
-
Did a fair bit of homework on the series thing a while back, be easy as Nepean and ACT or griffith would work, and the selection (competing riders) of teams of equal ability is the way to go speaking to riders over there and here. The system in the US is easily set up with the promotors, they have crowds paying to see flat track over there and they love it (and us).
-
I reckon it could & should be a goer.
Pretty much the spectators we get are made up of relo's and the real diehards, same again is there going to be enough people with an interest / knowledge of the US scene, so sponsorship dollars will be have to play a big part.
Would we have to open those tracks you mentioned up to the longtrack format or make them deal with right handers?
What time of year would fit in with their own season, running something like that here in the middle of summer would be uncomfortable.
All things that can be overcome but need to be sorted.
A few years away but you & Colleen are our pioneers.
The pressure's on you Pete, open up a whole can of oz whoop ass on them and they'll take notice.
-
Well they do have some right handers like Peoria so its not that much of an ask is it?
Just read the whole Thread, freakin amazing!
Rock on .

Hate to start boring everybody again, but I have just recieved some great news, I HAVE SCORED A RIDE ON A REAL LIFE CHAMPION TRIUMPH 750 for the Kanzas Fair Series in August 2012.
Have been talking to Wild Will from Flattrack.com and will be his team mate riding for Tom Laird (LA Racing) an ex-racer who prepares a couple of really quick Triumphs. Bill Davis is kindly loaning the ute again so all is looking good for 2012. Will hosts a chat line on Flattrack.com on wednesday night, works out to Thursday early afternoon here, and is anouncing the news on the web site. Rapt.
-
Thats great news Pete! Congratulations. I can remember when you missed out back in the '70's and how pissed off you must have been. Cream always rises to the top mate.,,, your time has come . Regards Mark
-
As if we weren't already jealous >:(
Way to go Tex.
-
I've been talking to Pete on the phone as I have had computer troubles, all good now, and have now got the update info on his trip to the USA for this year, thanks for bearing with me , Pete.
OK , we'll start with a shot of Pete's team mate for this year, Wild Will Kelley #6, chasin' the King in 1975.
Check this out Alan, that's my new team mate in the US this year (Willard Kelley aka Wild Will on www.flattrack.com)racing Kenny Roberts in 1975. That's the King on a Yam and Will on Triumph No 6, how cool is that. Can you post it on the website mate, still amazed about the amount of interest generated by racin overseas, I have nominated for an Australia Day award locally.
Next , here's Pete's ride for this year
(http://i854.photobucket.com/albums/ab106/JAP454/Peter2.jpg)
Just a pic of Tom Lairds Champion Triumph I will be riding in the Kanzas series, there is another big meeting in Minnesota that i may be able to ride as well (a Vintage meet with $20,000 prizemoney, unreal). Am going to miss the Ameteur Nationals this that I had planned on riding a modern in (date moved apparently very unusual to have it at the end of winter).Probably safer for me to stick with what I know mate. There will plenty of meetings to do as the calender has only started to get together.
Check out the business card, big time! Really not out of place over there. SMS cost 50 cent internationally
And, of course, Pete's business card, Pete tells me that all the riders have one, onya Pete, go the Aussie !!
Great stuff, Pete and we'll have more updates as they come in to the Abercrombie River Newsroom !!

Gettin sick of that # 6 being behind that Lee bloke. So gunna buy a bike for him in the USA as long as it has # 6 on it. Looking at a Champion Framed XL350 Pat Orman 442cc for the old bloke to ride whislt over there then ship it on back here(quiet sure my wife would love it in the lounge room). If Pete can bring it back in one piece(the engine bit I mean). Good luck mate
-
If ya can't beat em, join em.
-
Hey Steve Na saw the bike so I thought the old bloke might as well ride it (as we know he can) before I get it sent over. Pete will do us proud then the bugger will come back & have a crack at Canberra Titles will be good.Hope he forgets there is a right hander in the equation.
-
dave i can help you get the bike back here or even just parts.is it the one on vtf
-
Yes it is Jim, can you believe him? Thanks Grasy, you are a champion mate.
-
Jim, if it comes to Ashfield like your other gear, we'll pick it up & take it out to Nepean to put it through it's paces then strip it down to copy whats been done to it.
Then send it on to Grasy in boxes. ;D
P.S. Don't forget Pete, nothing rev's harder than someone elses bike.
-
Pete,If you could talk your Mate Grasy into coming,We can find him a ride ,too.My Friend in Salina ,KS has several really fast dirt trackers. and several others would be honored to give him a ride. How about it ,Grasy. Ready to "Buck The Tiger ?" as they used to say in the Old West. There are lots of things to see in TX,OK and Kansas. I think Roger or Larry K. have some stuff sitting around thats pretty fast, too. Jerry Cheney will be there with his fast Hondas also.
Anyway,We'll fit you in somewhere.
. Tom Laird. The old ,beat up Retired Racer Formerly known as 74n

Go for it Grasy !!!
-
You know you want to. ;)
-
Hi Tom not this year sorry ,promised Pete I would come this year but ,got a beautiful wife that wanted some house renovations so took the right option. Will be there next year but. But did get Ol Pete a rocket to ride.As they say keep the rubber down & bars horizontial. I beleive you know Randy & the bike.
Cheers Grasy

Yep,That thing is so fast,It will pass Itself. LOL Maybe next year, then.
-
We will bring him next year Tom, I have had bikes fast enough to pass themselves before, trouble is they usually leave me behind. Appreciate all the help Tom.
-
What Class in our Classic Dirt Track would that fall into?
Or is it going straight to the pool room, after Pete flog's it of course.
-
That is a good question Steve, have to get Firko on to it, you are right the buggared class might be the one, am really confident in the engine, Pats engines are reliable and strong so I will just have to point it in the general direction and hang on. It is gunna be good!!!!!!!
-
change it to drum brakes and its a pre75 dirt tracker i have one comming as well it will be here at the end of march.
it is for a cr250m 73-74 motor
-
The engine has a centre port head 1976 ,but may change it to pre 75 status(cases & head will still look pretty) & run CR hubs or slip one of my XL 250 motors into it.
Who knows with the Griffith Maiosso. Just know it will be fast & legal. Ha Ha
-
Maiosso? Have the Triads moved in.
Given that you've already got a shed full of super competitive pre75 bikes, maybe ride it in pre78?
Here's a new question, would/could/should a Flattracker like that be eligible for the "Slider" Class?
Speaking of Firko, I hope he's doing okay.
-
Comin spinner got 22 bikes cant ride em all just enter what has a chance. Got five engines in bits at the moment.Get sick of looking at da degree wheel. But no one will ever know where I set things. Not Even Fast Ol Pete.Might teach da young fella Anthony thou .
-
What is a "degree wheel", is it a degree of difficulty gauge? Do you mean degrease wheel? Just throw bits in the engine and they will hammer in (that is laymans talk for the technical term"break-in").
-
Probably Degree of Difficulty in Starting. LOL
-
Got this from #52 today, a beaut shot of Pete at speed on Bill's Metisse
(http://i854.photobucket.com/albums/ab106/JAP454/PeterLeeNorton.jpg)
Can't wait to get on that Triumph of Tom's and get it wound up on the Half-Mile's in Kanzas, pic was taken at Norton KZ, probably be hanging on a bit more than in the picture, was getting a little to comfortable on the Rickman.
-
Yes Pete I have seen first hand your break in results.
Remember the XL 125 blow ups(i still got the fastest one), & CB 350 base ball bat cam chain tensioner. you make me laugh you ol dude.
At least please check the tyre pressures before ya ride the rocket
-
Ride it like you stole it Pete. ;)
-
Thought I'd try to get the interest back up for Pete Lee's return to the U.S.
This time he's actually gonna be riding some real Flat Track stuff instead of a converted MXer.
I hope to go to a couple of races here in Texas with he & Colleen.
He made quite a splash last year and I'm sure he'll do even better this time with all the tips he's gotten from Grasy,Firko,Freaky and the others.

He's kinda tired of hauling Grapes for all those Wine drinkers.
Hope things are going well in WA.
Hope to come over next year with my wife,Nancy.

Not long now, lucky bastard. >:(

Just got some news from some of the blokes I met in the US, Ron Long from Cal just won the Springfeild Vintage Mile, we have emailing one another, top bloke and fast. Really wanted to do this meet but AMA brought the date forward and because of forward booking, the flights were too hard (exspensive) to change.
Other blokes I met Tim Hagar (one eyed customs/yes he has only one eye) is doing well and Jim Monegan is on it (celebrating a birthday and racing all week).
The meeting is awsome the top GNC pro contest short track and TT over 2 days then the Ameteur Grand National Titles are contested over the next week (ST,TT,Half mile and the Mile). The week also has 2 Rounds of the AMA Vintage GNC (half mile and mile).
After hearing bout Ron winning the mile I returned to my pruneing job at home (20 beautiful fruit trees, most in the front yard), with a chainsaw (hope Colleen will forgive me, they are still there).
Frustration mostly gone, will be there in a fortnight to annoy Bill and Nancy.
PS Team mate Wild Will from flatrack.com is busy in Catus Tx on his way to another VDTRA No 1, been following his progress, pitching a Triumph twin (Tom Laird's Trackmaster) against a bunch of 80's singles and winning. Really have to take your hat of to 'em, the blokes I met were really racer's races.

Good to catch up with you today Pete, safe trip mate, you're livin the dream for all of us.
Cheers, Steve
-
Thanks Steve and we hope those complications with that fracture you got at Nepean mend well, all the best mate.
-
All good Pete, make the most of this year because you may not get a word in edge wise next year.
If I can pull off a Lotto win or even better, a divorce, you can count me in as pit crew for you & Grasy because my riding day's are done & dusted.
-
More than welcome Steve.
-
What a buzz, put a post up on flattrack.com, trying to get an idea on gearing Grasy's Honda in the US for the Half-mile, and Dave Aldana replied (met the man in Kanzas last year, a real racer, just as you would exspect from the "On Any Sunday" legend). Got a rough idea, although I rode Pat Orman's XL last year it was already set up by a Pro class rider, Paul Covert. To give you an idea on most Aussie tracks I run 3:35 final drive ratio with a 18'' tyre, on the half-mile the boys are recommending 2:73 using 19'' tyre, mate that is a big gear. Think we have our transport covered, looking forward to seeing our US connection and mate Bill again.
-
G'day Pete.
The need for speed ;D You must be getting the twitch by now. Bet you can't wait! Best of luck and stay safe. regards Mark

Good luck over there Pete and don't forget to keep us updated on your adventures matey.
Give my regards to Bill Davis as well.

Hey Mates !!!
Just a little update on Pete & Collen Lee.They got here safely, bought an RV and tomorrow will be off to the Grand Canyon & Las Vegas to do a little sightseeing before the Racing begins in a couple of weeks. He can't wait to thrash Grasy's Honda & Tom Laird's Triumph instead of my Rickman.
Wish him luck !!!!

Our first meeting in the USA, after a 1500 mile trip to pick up motorcycles, was the Ohio State Ameteur Championships in Bellefontainne, Ohio on the half-mile. A pea-gravel track in a paper-clip design (American), suits me as it is similar to OZ surfaces. We have 2 Triumph 750's supplied by Tom Laird of Nebraska and a Champion Honda 442cc purchased by David Gras to use in the USA.
After quaifying 2nd in the Open Vintage on the 750 I decided to switch back to the 442cc Honda of David's as the track had been watered and the smaller motorcycle would be easier to ride than the big twin cylinder bike. Machine changes are allowed in the states and it proved a good move as I won the race resonably comfortably.
Really enjoyed being back on the fair circuts and am looking forward to Wasseon Classic National next friday and the AMA Vintage Championships on saturday in Ashland about 100 mile away.

Up-date from Pete and Colleen this morning,
G'day All,
Finally got to the races, we have over 5500 miles up on the Camper and all is good. Bellefontainne hosted the Ohio State Amateur Championships on the half mile yesterday and we needed to shakedown the bikes before the AMA round next weekend. Track was a "paperclip" half-mile, two longer straights connected to turns at either end. A resonable turnout with some great pro-racing.
I entered the heavyweight(big bike) vintage class and qualified 2nd on the Champion Triumph, beaten by a Rotax 676cc single ridden by a bloke called Dusty, in the final changed to David Gras's Champion Honda to win (machine changes allowed in good old USA, the big twin was never going to beat a Rotax from the eighty's).
Also entered the Over 50 class on the Honda and qualified 2nd but elected not to ride the final, our motorcycle from the seventies a poor match for modern bikes. All in all a good result and met some new friends and interesting to be back on the Fair circuit, in-mates cleaning up after the races and watching the bull riding on Thursday nite.
Big 2 meetings 100 mile apart next weekend

Well done on the win, keep em coming.
Next Friday at Wauseon is at Fulton County Fairground, which is about two miles up State Route 108 from where I live when I work over there. I'll tell a couple of bike riding mates to come and look you up, if that's OK with you. I'm sure they'll have a couple of nice cold Bud's for you after the races.
Cheers,

Hi All,
Big meeting at Wauseon in Ohio, National long track titles and huge swap with vintage (board racers and the like National titles for them as well).
The more modern classics we the main support classes, the 750 Open the feature of the night. Track had very little sraightaway but huge corners, still half-mile, and difficult for me to come to grips with, failed to quaify the 750 after jumping start and put behind the 2nd row. 36 750's all open, had to get first 4 to get to the main. The race was a treat, will tell later.
Dave's bike went well and came 4th in heat and put me on the second row of the feature, finished 11th in race, a real wake up call to qualify well!
Travelled 3hrs to race in the AMA Vintage Champs in Ashland the next night, great to be back there and practiced well, made sure to get 1st on the 750 in heat to ensure a good grid (coming to grips withTom's bike). Stalled the 750 on the line in final, very dissapponting. Dave's Honda handling great but no match for big TT's,Rotax and XL's in the over 50 division, still qualified 3rd (put me on the second row, I hate that). The final was probably one of my best rides in USA, finished 4th after being out dragged to the line.Won by Dave Atherton on a Norton, one of the US rider that toured with Springer in OZ.
Really tough weekend but enjoyed it none the less. Seeya.
PS we will leave Ohio to see some more sights before the Kanzas series starting August 9
Pete and Super Senior, Jack Warren
(http://i854.photobucket.com/albums/ab106/JAP454/Petetrip8.jpg)
This bloke is a hero, at the Wauseon races the 750 vintage was the money race, open to pro's.
There was 36 riders entered, 18 made the final (I didn't qualify after a jump start and set back behind row 2) Chad Rall(22) and Joe Roedler(pro racer now in thirties) battling for the lead after Jack Warren (uncle of Eddie Warren MX racer still in OZ) jumped the start and was sent back behind the 3rd row (yes the third row) after six laps Jack is in third (how he got there I dunno, the race for lead captivating) then second, on the last lap he came under Joe and pushed him wide to win. JACK WARREN IS NEARLY SEVENTY ONE. 71.
PS there was an Last chance qualifier and I decided not to contest it, really no way I could have made the top 2 in it.
Thanks , Pete and Colleen for keeping us up to date

Hi Y'all,
After Ashland, we went back to a bloke we meet last year in Ashland and DuQuion, he runs the dummy grid for the AMA and as every racer knows you got to be his friend. Dave and Jean live waayy out in the country and are really really great people, they have several bits of property for hunting and self sufficiency. Dave had a son who raced, made it to pro status by eighteen, raced 3 times as pro before being sadly killed in a roll over. After a couple of days we had the sad story from Dave and he showed me the bike from 1989 that Don rode (he also has the Rotax 600), descibed the the day before he died, where he competed in Springfield in great detail.I had tears rolling down my face that morning.
Really great people, we met the whole family, sad to leave.
The last pic of Dave with his hand out sums up the bloke.
PS on the way to Rushmore.
What a moving yarn, it just show's to go , it's not just the Racin" , it's the People ! , thanks for that Pete and Colleen,

Just a quick note to say our mate Tim Hagar (fastest one-eyed flattracker in the US) is OK and his back is healing well, thats him with Ziggy, a really great racer (pro), they had a modern race for the pro's in Ashland. It is really nice that they pay attention and respect to the older guys over here.
Ziggy only rides the one way as far as I have seen high and wide, carries a huge amount of corner speed and makes an XR look even quicker.

We made it to Yellowstone, spending a lot of fuel money, and we were rewarded with a real life,in the wild, Grizzly. What a buzz, he stayed forever, digging grubs.
Seen all the others, bar a moose, but we seen one last year.
All is good and I have conned Colleen to return to Sturgis, to compete in short-tracks on Monday and Tuesday nights, half-mile on Wednesday.
It should give me more of a chance on the smaller (eighth mile) circuts as our bikes are down on power compared to the competition.
Colleen is rapt as it is her birthday on the 7th and it is just what she wanted to do, Ha.

The Sturgis meet run by the Jack Pine Gypsies is a big event with a huge history since 1938, it is really run by the MC racing club, the short track was put down in 1962 and the Half mile is from the 40's reworked and moved around 4 times but great read on the history of the event, there are bikes everywhere (as there was last week before we went to Yellowstone), they had 600,000 here in 2000 and the word is 700,000 this year, they are staggering numbers mate.

Hi all,
Done the first night at Sturgis short track, 3rd in heat and 3rd in the main. Heat race was the usual 2nd row start and rode well to finish 3rd, gave me a good position for the final (main) and got the perfect gate, lead for 5 laps until 2 fast guys ran me down and had to settle for 3rd place.
My bike is number 17, pics are from the heat race.
Stugis is huge some 650,000 people have come and it is a great spectacle, we ran into filming of American Pickers, got very close to Frank and whatshisname.
Hope to do better tonight, may be riding the twin in an event.

On the short track you could have reached out and touched the riders as the went by, in the pro class, I felt uncomfortable being so close and stepped back a little, there was a couple of big wrecks (crashes) and 4 went to hospital. Probably to tell the doctor they tripped over, such is the health system.

Heres the goss from Kanzas
(http://i854.photobucket.com/albums/ab106/JAP454/PetetripKanz1.jpg)
# 31 is Jim Monegan (68 year old pro), the bloke is my hero. Really wanted to do well here in Kanzas, had a good talk to Jim and as every racer knows but needs a reminder at times, you can't win everywhere and you are always going to come up against track specialists that are unbeatable on their home track (you gotta go at them again, according to Jim).
# 33 is Ron Long and me going at it in the heat (Ron fresh from winning the Sacremento mile (vintage) fast and safe). Managed to reverse the finishing order of the heat with a win in the final.
Also won the Open Amateur Vintage on Daves Honda.
What !! No thirds ?? Just jokin', great stuff Pete

-
Geez Dave, and I thought Jim was pissed, you're a week behind the convo.
I love my Corned Silverside and knew straight away it wasn't the real deal, too fibrous.
-
Well, Our mate, Pete, certainly got sick of third places !!, here's the pix from Stockton, I dont have captions for the pix so they will have to tell their own story, here's Pete's report.
Hi Guys,
2nd day at Stockton went well, well perfect. Won the Over 50 Vintage final and the series overall (here 1st place is worth more percentage wise than 2nd and so on, made my limp home last night in 5th worth it), was a great race combined with the over 60 class, where my mate from last year, Ron Long, also won.
The Open Vintage was my best ride to date, came off the start in 4th to win the final by a wheel from Newbold. Gave me the series win in that class as well.
Sorry to concentrate on only my stuff, the meetings were well attended, Davy Durrell won the 450 from Chis Carr (his first meet for the year, out of semi-retirement) and a good feild of pro's. Counted at least 7 XR750's racing, Davy won the Open on his after a battle with Chris's 450 Honda. Chris Carr is developing a new dirt track tyre with Golden Tire, Jim Monegan also done test for him on vintage bikes, such is the respect for older races here.
Thats it for us, very happy with our racing and visit to the USA, planning for next year!

Just like to update those pics, Colleen is in the picture with Jim and Nancy Monegan from Washington state, the battle I had with 747 is Travis Newbold, fresh from Pikes Peak where he won 450 class (CRF450 he made out of parts/17'' slicks, etc) and set 9th fastest time of the week (including cars), really a great story (he missed Colby as he was travelling to the series).Colleen and I are next to Ron Longs beautiful framer (pity I am in the way).If a bloke had enough time you could write a book on the experience we have had, as we started this year the cost of the motorhome and airfares alone (over $20,000) were weighing on my mind but having nearly finished our trip I can't believe we would have had as much fun as the first time, but we have had more!Have spoke to Paul Covert in depth and with another Aussie he will be organizing a test next year, forgot to mention the British rider in Kansas this year, Alan Birtwistle from Lancashire (he rode really well in the modern ameteur, building his pace to win convincingly). Must assure Alan we looked after him and even included us in his podium speech, he loves pancakes!

If we can develop the short track competition at Nepean a bit more we might be able to introduce a brakeless class here, we might have more competitors for a brainless class.

If we can develop the short track competition at Nepean
I'm fairly sure its to happen next year Slides. There's quite a number of proper American flat track framers, both vintage and modern just waiting for something. We've got seven just in Klub Kevlar alone, eight if I ever got my Trackmaster Benelli 650 finished.
-
The racing with just a rear brake is, how do I put it, measured. It largely stops the block-pass we see here where you dive up the inside under brakes.
Be fantastic to use the little short-track at Nepean but even better would be one of the clay tracks the sprint-car mob use. There are plenty out there.
-
A no dive bomber class, personally I love the sound of that. >:(
Pete, Parramatta Speedway tried to run a flatttrack type event this year including a few classic classes but didn't receive enough interest.
-
All good things come to an end, and, in Pete's words " Sadly it's finished", however a lot of people have followed Pete and Colleen's progress with much interest and it's been my pleasure to keep everyone informed. Well done, you two !!
Foss
Hi All,
Just tidying up here at Bill's place, had to take a pic of the trophies. The trip was much more than that, renewing friendships we made last time and some new ones to boot.
Much more sight-seeing this time kept Colleen snapping away with the camera. The racing was great and am looking forward to riding my own bike next year.
Many thanks to Bill and Nancy Davis from Texas for helping us so much (again), we really appreciate their friendship and help.
Thanks to my mate and sponsor David Gras for the Honda, can't wait to have him racing with me next year, Tom Laird for the opportunity to ride the Triumph, meet Gerry Kosinski, Willard Kelley and his family in Bryan, thanks Bev.
Many people along the way Paul Covert, Ron Long, Jim Monegan, Jamie Nicely, Steve Bromley, Jim Gately, John McClelland,Fuzzy Kopp, Tim an Terese Hagar, Dave and Gene Martin, Larry and Jo Kennedy, Jeff Hawbaker, Erik and Tammy Bland, John Meeker, Kenny Coulson, Pete an Jim Henry, Chris Carr, Davy Durell and many more for extending there hand in friendship and making our stay so much more than a holiday.
Colleen and I looking forward to next year.

Awesome pick up there with the knight honda Pete. It was pretty good buying for the money I thought. Look forward to next years reports. Knight framed xr500 is my favourite set up, so I hope it goes well.
Cheers,
Steve
-
Congratulations on flying the flag so well Pete. You're living the dream my friend ;D.
I also thought that Knight was a good thing. There's been some good buys over there lately and its great to see some of them hitting our sunny shores! I look forward to seeing both it and Grasy's Honda in action around the scene next year.
-
I thought this was a good buy too.

The Rotax is an awsome engine, can still win anywhere, the only reason you don't see them is the AMA has the DTX formula (std frame) in the GNC. Spoke to Chris Carr about it, he would prefer the framers as they take up less track (shorter and turn better), therefore in his opion be safer.
Have seen Rotax's win Outlaw races against twins and DTX stuff. The Rotax's is becoming (is) vintage legal and if you front the line with one you know you got a job ahead of you, I referred to them as the natural enemy of the XL350. The ones here have a distinctive bark and will go to 676cc apparently.
Kinda think you are going to hve to keep on top the maintainence though.
-
Jonesy's ATK DT600 Rotax looks to be a good thing and once he's over his injuries is looking forward to chucking some skids with you Pete! The bike was used by Joe Bromley to win the AMA National Vet title a couple of years ago.
Alan will also have the 860cc Nourish Weslake Redline up and running soon as well.

Hey Mates !!!
Just got a text from Pete !!! He & Colleen have arrived in Brisbane, says they should be home in ten hours.
He's looking forward to next year already.
So are we.
Bill & Nancy Davis
-
Thanks for looking after them Bill.....When are you and Nancy coming back downunder? I hope it's soon and maybe this side of the island this time ;)
-
Firko !!!
It was our pleasure.
We hope to come over next year and visit both coasts.
Take care.

Congratulations on flying the flag so well Pete. You're living the dream my friend ;D.

Thanks Firko, Bill and Nancy really looked after us! Not sure if the Knight Honda will ever make it home, I really only bought it to use over there. Still maintain, rightly or wrongly, that the US set-up is quite different and we (may?) have the correct motorcycle set-up here.
-
What we need to do is find some sponsorship for transport and get a couple of your bikes over there, that'd give em summin to talk about, an interesting experiment.
-
I would love to run a knight framed xr500 around our beloved Action Park up at Maryborough. It would be the bee's knee's!

Just been on Facebook with Mia and Chew, we met them in Ashland, real dirt track people. She has posted footage from Wauseon and Ashland, look on youtube under naturegirlmia, wauseon12. Warning, if you watch the footage you will book a flight to the USA and RACE. I have!

That has made my day. Thanks Pete.
The blokes on the old sidecars were great!!!
The Yanks sure know how to put on a show. I want to go. ;D

Yeah I watched it earlier Jim and I think Pete has a few little cameo's in that one, there was another guy using 17 as well.
Loved the old Board Trackers and Sidecars, I may have imagined it but it looked like they could lean slightly either way?
-
Here we come da USA Kelly & I have booked or tickets to meet up with Peter & Col for the Kansas AMA in August .Looking forward to the trip & experience. We both have some engine building to do when we arrrive Pete on his new scooter Knight Honda XL500 & myself on the Champion Honda XL 350 (Pete campaigned last year) we both will be adding some Aussie thoughts into the motors. Looking forward to meeting Bill & Nancy from Texas.
-
Had a sneek peek at the Knight Honda in its new home waiting for Pete and Colleen.
Schmick. Question,.....do they mix 4 strokes and 2 strokes or do they have seperate classes. cheers Mark
-
All in with 2/ and 4/, the 4 strokes dominate. Had a great experience selling stuff through the forum, and made some cash to take with me to the states. Davy Crocket came around in his van, straight out of American Pickers, cool. Dropped off some stuff with Foss and had a great visit, thanks for the hospitality mate, then onto steve 234s stash in a secret location, cool stuff mate. Thanks again to the forum members I dealt with and have a great 2013.
-
Must be that time of the year again boys! Off to the U.S.A?
-
Just over a month before Colleen and I are off, can't wait. Did the first test at the "Pines" of the Xl500 we have been developing here, I have a FT500 on the ground at Bill Davis's place in TX. Will take the good bits from our test mule here and graft to the FT engine, we (includes a bunch of mates from Griffith) have done some things that are unique to us here and hope they work in the US. I used a fair bit of US style gear in it, ie cam and carb, and on the test here I would say both are to big for our tracks. I will test a 40mm carb this week instead of the 44. Our engine seen 9120rpm on test, not bad for a big XL500. Will keep youall updated. Many thanks to Bill and Nancy for storing all our stuff and collecting packages from all over.
-
Yeeehaaah, go get em Pete.
-
Geez Pete you'll need a fifth wheeler to bring home the loot, with the power under your backside now 8) 8)
Excitement plus :P
-
Good luck over there....you have to live up to the Aussie reputation now that Adam Scott has won the "green" jacket.....watch out for those donuts. 8)
-
Good luck Pete, it;ll be interesting to see if Aussie ideas will work over there....it's intersting you saying that their setup doesn't always work here. Jonesy rode his ATK 604 Rotax that's set up for half mile at Nepean on the weekend and it proved to be a rocket but was way over carburetted (44 Mikuni) and it appeared to be over cammed for DT. Ron Wood originally built the engine so Al's going to talk to him about whether a softer tune, possibly a TT set up might help our track conditions. Give my regards to Bill
-
Thanks Davy, Colleen and I watched it this morning, he kinda won it twice (with the playoff), really good. Hope to catch you somewhere mate, you helped fund the trip with a that stuff you bought!
-
Thanks Firko, Jonesy is dead right, over carbed and cammed.I have been getting help with the XL500 project from Jeff Hawbaker (a mate of Pat Ormans) who has one of the fastest XL based mtrs in the scene over there, I emailed Jeff about the issues with maybe too much power and he said there is no such thing as too much.Funny thing is with that big carb and cam the engine is still brutal down low, not soft at all and will sit and idle, just has a big rush in the mid range ie too big.
-
You blokes have fun over there!
Cheers pancho.
-
Pete, mmcc have a practice day on 12th May. Action Park would be a good spot to test your US set up. It's a big ask due to the trek but I am sure you would be welcome. Here is some pit corner action, sweeper off the straight is bigger and faster.

Funny....even though I've never been to Bill and Nancy's place I had an uncomfortable feeling that they lived near Waco.....I'M glad they're OK.
Have a terrific time Pete. Seeing that it's still in the USA, if my Shell 750 Yamaha had been fully assembled and hot to trot I would have had no problems letting you race it on your tour before my shipping it home.
Still, I guess you've got enough things to worry about without my adding to the mix ::) .D Don't forget to keep us in the loop matey ;).

Thanks Firko, my new bike in Texas now thanks to the Flat track community in the US, a friend we met on our first trip bought the bike(using his money) for me, reconned if I didn't want it he would unload it as it was good buying.I wanted it! It's a Knight Honda 500 from Washington state, took a while but with a lot of help from travelling racers is now in TX.
-
That's a great looking Knight Pete but how old is that Goodyear mounted on the front? They haven't made them in years ::). Have you got a 750 ride this year?
-
Sweet bike. Good luck with the racing.

A mate who sponsors National #42 Bryan Smith emailed me to tell me that there will be an AMA race on the 1.25 MILE , Colonial Downs track in Virginia in August. The speeds should be wild ;D.

Will need plenty of luck! Have been busy the last few months building a quick XL500 here and testing it.
The tyres will be replaced, using Maxxis on the groove (clay) tracks and have 2 new trials radials (19'') waiting for the pea-gravel. The speeds on the mile tracks are insane, on an XL350 try going up 2 teeth on the front and down 6 on the back, on gearing you would use at Canberra. No 750 this year, will concentrate on the 500, I have its original engine plus the mtr I have made here (pictured) for the open classes, ended up spending far too much.
That is a beautiful Yamaha, they are the most popular vintage engine on the scene.

Pete, if you see anyone using the GoldenTyre tyres ask them if they are any good.

Hi Steve,we were at Stockton when Chris Carr was testing the prototype Golden Tyres, he gave a set to Jim Monagan who tested them on his XL350 based bike and he said they were good. Chris is big on the tyre testing and came out of retirement to race with them, I'm sure his final version would be good, if you buy a set buy the narrow one in the softest compound as the harder ones are designed to run on big bikes, on big tracks and long races ie 25 laps. That is Jim (on the test GT's)chasing Davy Durell (Maxxis distributer).

Cheers Pete.

That's what's on the Antig, Firko, 22 inch tyres are available from Heffernan's Motorsport and I guess a tyre is still cheaper than a new rim and respoke, which I know Jim can do, plus a new tyre

I reckon the 22's look pretty good. Just gotta stay away from the fence Jimbo ;)

Back to Pete's trip,... must be time to take off Pete??
-
What number will you be runnung Pete? Can you campaign #52 or do they give you one on sign up? Looking forward to some pics out front of #58 & #31m ;D
-
Hi Steve, have been running whatever on the bike but this year as it is my bike I have Justin Burdus making a letter A in the flag thing, looks great and feeling comfortable enough with the scene over there to get away with it (until Grasy arrives to ride the Kansas series on his Champion XL, he will give it to me). 58 is Davy Durelle, I got beat by his missus in the Open Ameteur last year. If I was as fast as him I would stay there, he won over $10,000 USD at Kansas last year over the 4 days. Over there that is a lot of money.

Have been busy at home with XL500 development, here a pic of the 44mm Mikuni on its inlet port, surprisingly it idles nicely with a huge top-end rush, too much too quick. I have a 38 to take for the smaller tracks.

Development of the 500 here came to a stop with the clutch exploding, apparently common when you get a bit of power out of them.
-
Reminds me of the old B33 Beeza clutch prob. We used to weld a steel band 'round 'em.

Granbury (where that tornado just hit, sadly with loss of lives) is only 30 miles from Bill's. Haven't heard anything from Bill yet, but am assuming it was a local event. The country has amazing weather, Colleen and I drove through a storm to end all storms (to us) woke up the next morning and the locals hardly spoke about it. Hoping all is Ok.

Colleen and I walk past this house in our street every morning, our house is number 1. Hope that means something, we shall see, just hope the new engine is as promising as it has been during testing at home and that we get the 43kg through customs! Off to Sydney tomorrow where 'ol mate Jim Garvey will take us out to tea with Chippa before we jet out, keep youall posted, had a last night with Grasy and mates, be sensational when he comes over later. See you soon Bill and Nancy.

On the road to Springfeild, 1000miles and we are there, is it worth it? ASOLUTELY!
rock & roll!

Hey Pete, if you see one of those neat alloy tanks at a swapmeet grab it for me ;D. The Griswolds Tour Bus looks the hot setup, I hope the bike's well and truly locked on though. I guess you couldn't fit it inside?? Regards to out Texas friends and say g'day to Homer and Marge in Springfield. ;)

-
Thanks fella's, it is like a dream while we are here, the tank an seat combo is carbon fibre (light as), we have a padlock on it but honestly we feel really safe here, almost always camp out.
-
We are at Springfield, raining bad, the mile is out. We all are hoping the other 3 events will go. Steve Nace, the promoter, has taken a big hit on this one, the GNC Pro races were cancelled as well (previous 3 nights)they are trying to pull the air-fence as I type. Really a beautiful complex (mainly horses of course/how often have you guys wished you could ride on the trotting track), will take some pics when rain stops.
-
That's a real bugger, Pete, Huey has the last say sometimes, eh ??

The whole thing is out, postponed, to be run in 3 weeks. We may do a 2-day meet in Ohio on the w'end to test the bike. We have a great mate there and love the place so we can work on it some more. It was a big storm with a tornado warning, no reports as yet of damage. We may get to do that mile again yet, plenty of disappointed faces here though. Seeya.
-
Fingers crossed for three weeks time then, Pete, hope things go well in Ohio,

Hey Pete,
What town is the meeting on in Ohio?
Pete.
-
Marion.
-
Marion is only a couple of hours from Wauseon - I'll let Ted and Patsy know and they might come for a run down there.
-
That's a bugger about the rain off Pete, sounds like Nepean.
At least it'll give you a chance get the new engine fully dialled in before the ultimate test.
I'm still jealous, prick.

We called into Indianapolis to look at the Speedway, that's Davy Crockett's shirt from QLD, thanks mate.
2-seaters were out on track, they run over the underpass, scared the heck out of us, big place.

We ended up catching up with Jean and Dave (AMA officials we have become mates with), that's Jean on bike. Rain forcast for w'end at Marion, so Dave organized a private practice session in Norwalk, Ohio.

Track was a good pea-gravel Half-Mile, tried our TT set-up hence the brake. Turn in was a bit abrupt probably be better with the Goodyear on it. good to test it all though, changed things quite a bit.

We have the 44mm carb back on and tuned, funny we ended up going richer than Aust. jetting with it and leaner on the 38. As Norris would say "whatever works", thanks for the "A" stickers Justin Burdus, all cool with the AMA to run them. Colleen glamoring it up back in Daves shop (shed).

Seen DC, as one American told us, enough museums to make you sick! Was good (and free!) but you quickly OD.
Made trip into NYC, drove right in, close enough to see the Statue of Liberty. Very Cool, pity it is on an island, would have got closer.

Our bike prepped for Ashland, with our style tires, hope they get through tech (It is a big event, all the pro's will be there). Have entered Open Vintage, it will be a good test before Springfeild.

Be great to catch up with young Edwards and family, Colleen and I ran into them 2 yrs ago at DuQuion. And to meet up with Rubberman, he is a bit of a legend over here.
-
Nice looking bike, love the big 'A'. What sort of tyres are you running? Do any of the Yanks run those?
-
I notice the bike's set up for TT with a front brake. It'll be interesting to see how the trials tyres go on their tracks, it might be the secret weapon on the TT 8). Good luck to Pete and the other Aussies.

Awesome meeting, happy with my result, best I have achieved in Pro Vintage. Our tires probably not the goods and Chris Carr (Golden Tire Importer and AMA No1, 7 times) gave me a fresh set of soft compounds for the Nationals next week. All in all 2nd was Ok, hard to get brain up to speed, changed gearing 4 times, kept going up a bit at a time, the place is Fast.

Jarrod Mees current No1 before he punched through the chain-mesh fence in turn 1 and broke his arm.
Apparently he pulled a fair heap of it off and it was difficult to get him out, Sammy Halbot won the meet, due to the rainouts there was a good roll up of GNC riders. Rob Pearson (has helped Aussie riders over there) rode well and was good to catch up with him. Seen the latest things, will post pics later.
-
Well done, its hard to beat them on their home tracks,
They know exactly what gearing to use as the dirt changes and moves,
They know exactly what pressures to run,
They have so many Old Heads in their corners, some with 50 years or more experience of that very dirt,
rob Pearson is one of Rubbermans mates, don't be surprised to see him in OZ this Summer.
Good Luck to you, Rubberman and TommyGun Edwards,

Keeping the OZ flag flying Pete! Jolly good!.
Has anybody tried riding long track sliders over there, I wonder how they'd go?
Have fun!
cheers pancho.

Good on yer Pete, your living the dream mate......I hope Coleen is keeping your diet on track.....not to many donuts for breakfast. 8)
-
Has anybody tried riding long track sliders over there, I wonder how they'd go?
Barry Briggs and Ivan Mauger rode Brit/Aussie style dirt track sliders at (I think) the Houston Astrodome in the early seventies but didn't achieve much. I think it's a horses for courses thing, the sliders wouldn't work on their blue line hard tracks as much as the American dirt trackers don't work so well on our tracks.
Go for their jugular Pete but don't worry about Davey's Donuts, it's the 10" high stack of pancakes, syrup and bacon that bought me unstuck, it's a trap for unwary breakfast diners ;D.

The Ameteur Grands are finished, been a disappoint for me, the old bike not quite a match for the moderns. Half-mile was good with a 4th place, TT was a shocker and the mile cancelled because of rain, an extra short track was added and I got a bad 4th in both races. 4th Overall.

The high point at the Grands was meeting up with young Tommy Edwards and cheering him on, the young man rode hard and fast, used his head and came away with 2 Grand National Championships. Tommy also came second in the 85cc class, at the Awards Ceremony he was presented with Youth Rider of the Year, really an honour for an Aussie on their turf. Well Bloody Done Tommy. If somebody can pick this up and take it to MA, be really good.

Flyer for the Kansas Series Grasy and I will be going to, can't wait to catch up with our mates Kelly and Dave. Paul Covert has the series payout at 25G so far with class payouts of 150% for the Vintage Racers, that's a big deal, it means Paul is effectively losing money running the old bikes. The crowd love 'em so that is his motive I'm sure.

Good luck Pete!
Geez there is a real mix of bikes in amoungst those classes, 450cc - 1000cc!
Will you be running the Golden Tyre's again?
-
Will be running Golden Tires again, thanks to Chris Carr, love to get that tire thing sorted with our Aussie champs, the ruling no "oil tires" would seem to make the US dirt track tyre elligable I assume as no tracks here (USA) run oil. Am staying with a mate Colleen and I have met over the trips, Ron Long, he has paid our entry and we will be using his workshop tomorrow, will be hard racing against the moderns though. Ron has won the mile before (again last year) so he will be a great help.

Good luck Pete....what's the weirdest food you and Coleen have sampled so far this trip?

Hard day against the moderns, managed third in heat race, that put me in the A-Main (top third of qualifiers). 11th in the Main, not good but I learned a lot and we did have some bike problems (friction materiel came of the pad, not good either). Kinda scary but fast, I turned into turn 3 and lost the back end once, surprisingly it just washed off speed, a good thing!

Eddie is a character for sure. I had the opportunity to meet his bike builder, the legendary Jack Hately. He shook my hand and then proceeded to spit on it, rubs his hand on his pants and say's aren't you the guy that rides CZ's. And then tells me they were the best MX bike. I hung out with both Eddie and Jack at Willow Springs at a flat track race for a day back in the late 90's. What a blur.

A great image of a couple of young gunslingers doing there best. But who won.
-
Racing is over. The Kansas people were just great and loved having the aussies around. Pete's photo pretty well sums up how we went over the series. The best race of all was the last one at Stockton where Pete and I bashed it out for 8 laps with Pete winning by half a bike. Both took home a swag of 1sts and a few 2nds and 3rds. Met Dave Aldana who was racing the seriesv- 63 and still fast. Will post photo's later.
-
What a series, Davey landed in country assembled his Honda (bottom and top end) then drove 800 miles to race, jet-lagged and knackered. Took a little time at the first meet to get his head around the speed then took off and won everything he entered, great effort mate.
-
good results from you two glad all went well
jim
-
Well done!
-
Many cheers! Great Aussie representatives obviously having a great time and showing of the big "A"
pancho.
-
Given the results I've seen I think there's been a change of leadership in the Griffith Mafioso.
All hail Don Grasy.
Well done to you both.
-
Received an email from someone with a couple of shots of Grassy and Pete sitting on their bikes grinnin like a couple of foxes in foul yard. Good stuff.
-
Yeah I got the same photos.....They certainly look happy and why wouldn't they?

Great job to both of you.I see the Red Rocket flying the Texas Flag as well.Looking forward to having Pete and Colleen back in Texas tomorrow.

Great effort fellas!! You have a great support team also (Colleen and Kelly). It helps. Yeah,.......I'm jealous :)
regards Mark
-
Awesome, well done.
-
Pete & I are both blessed to have the wives we have supporting us,They would help start the bikes, push them to the dummy grid, and always looked great with their big Aussie smiles.
Can't thank Bill & Nancy enough they made the trip so easy,(workshop, tools, accommodation,The Red Rocket Truck & friendship)
We will be back next year for sure.

Bill and Nancy have delivered us to DFW after a great meal of catfish, thanks again Bill and Nancy, wonderful people. Started Daves Honda after a wash and it sounds a bit second-hand, no wonder after the work it has done. It really is a sweet ride, Dave rode it to its potential and put on a great show, well done mate.

Dave has been up in Iowa visiting Jeff Hawbaker, he had a ride on his 500, that is possibly the fastest XL/XR in the world, Jeff was good friend with the legend Pat Orman.
-
aararrarararrrrggghghhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!! that's a nice bike!
-
Black seems to be the colour of the moment 8).
-
Jeff is one smart dude, I rode the bike in the picture it pulls the front wheel up with no effort in 5th gear runs on hi octane petrol breathing thru a 48 mm carby that is tuned to perfection. Jeff also hand made his own cylinder from billet to suit the XL making it 780cc . Took some cool shots of engine things but they stay with me . Cause Jeff has got lots of guns !!!! :o
Did some maths on the bikes Pete & I rode over here the poor things did 92 miles spinning at 10,000 rpm
over the 4 race meetings. My Champion frame broke the swing arm bolt in half at Goodlands(borrowed Peter's rocket to do the main, broke the LH side of the swingarm off at the pivot(Colby) .Luckly Garry from Lightshoe was at every meeting making & repair steel shoes .He was kind enough to weld my bike back together . She is one very 2nd hand bit of gear at the moment .Will be getting a make over for next year if I don't buy Jeff's missile. :D
-
Hey Mates !!!
Just wanted to say that Nancy and I enjoyed having Pete & Colleen and Dave & Kelly stay with us during their Holiday over here in the USA.
We look forward to have them come again next year.
We hope to come over there one of these days.
On a less happy note,Pete and Sue Lawson were supposed to come over this week from WA but he had a crash a couple of weeks ago and was unable to make the trip.
He may try to come next spring for Diamond Don's.
Take care to all my Aussie friends.

Pete and Sue Lawson were supposed to come over this week from WA but he had a crash a couple of weeks ago and was unable to make the trip.
Wow, who'd have thought Peter Lawson would have a crash :o :o? Sorry to here that though.
-
Yes -the risk of a crash is greater when you actually ride regularly as opposed to that of the regular polisher
-
Regular polisher....that's me, ya gotta keep 'em shiny and nice ;), but Mr Lawson's face plant quota would have to be triple the national average, he must be made of sponge rubber. I hope he gets over his latest with no permanent damage.
-
One of my wifes co-workers stopped by the house today and was looking at my bikes and told me he worked for Champion frames back in the day and had rented a room from the owner for about 4 months when he lived in the San Francisco bay area back in the day. Small world. :)

It is a small world, very lucky to have met Ron Wood in our short visit to California, one of the many people we met.

Nearly ready to head off for Colleen and I's first trip to Florida, the TBC was a great event and helped sort out the new 520cc engine I have been developing with help from Jeff Hawbaker. I broke another basket at the Bayliss, Jeff said it would so have banded a new one to take with us.

That's the broken one, it is out of an FT500, they are much stronger than the early XL version. Probably a good guide to how much power the thing is making, I used one in the 600+ engine in 2013 and never had an issue.

Pic of the banded version, thanks to 333 racing for the new FT basket. Have all my engine parts packed up, totals nearly 30kg. Will assemble in Texas at our mate Bill Davis's place, hopefully the motorhome will start up, and will head for Georgia for the All-Star Nationals round 1 on March 6, have competed in this series before in Ashland (placed 2nd to a pretty fast bloke riding a Hanson Race Tech prepared Honda 500/fast).
-
What breaks the clutch basket Pete? Load from extra horsepower, centrifugal force from extra revs or a combination of the two maybe??
-
Is there any other events in March , I am heading over there on March 9 to March 31
Driving from La to New York , would be good to see one event while I am over there.
Thanks mick
-
The fixers and flushers festival is on in bumfu.k Tennessee. Don't miss it ;D
-
Mick, I think you will miss the racing at Daytona Speed Week, the Vintage Nationals are in Barberville, Fl. 9th and 10th of March. One half -mile and a short-track. The GNC races are close to them, just after me thinks, on the AMA site. Shame mate I could have used a hand, the rest of the calender kicks off in May, when it all thaws out, if I can get some results I plan to return later in June for a couple of mths.

thats a real bummer , I am going to go to Utah to see the salt lake flats if they aren't snowed under :o just to see where the fastest Indian was from nz .
But I will try and get to a flattrack museum ;)
-
The AMA Museum in Ohio is worth a visit, plenty of XR's to look at. Our last visit there was the same day Garry Nixon died. They have some of his stuff. If you get up around the Finger Lakes area (NY State, its beautiful) go to the Curtiss Museum. Watkins Glen is not far away, although we didn't visit the track the area is nice, although be cold there now.

its near fresno
start you trip from there
jim
-
The Dan Rouit museum is a must see if you are up near Clovis . Dan and Kathy are a great couple , the museum has a really good selection of trackers from very early through to late 80's
-
I agree with Jim, try and get to Dan and Kathy's flat track museum in Fresno Ca. It's only small when compared to big mega millionaire set ups like the Barber museum but it's got a lot of tasty flat trackers and well worth the trip out to Fresno. Dan's wheelchair bound and lately in poor health but is a great bloke and Kathy or one of the volunteers may give you a guided tour.
http://www.vft.org/rouit.html . Tom White's motocross and flat track museum is worth a visit as well, it's in Villa Park in Orange Co, Ca. It's not open to the public except for special days or events but it's worth a call. http://www.earlyyearsofmx.com/
There are usually a lot of Aussies and Kiwis racing at Bonneville, especially in the bike classes. Let's hope it's not rained or washed out. I was hoping to get to Bonneville this year myself but "stuff" has now put my trip back to later in the year.
-
We are back in the USA, good to see Bill and Nancy again. We went out to dinner at a café, anyone who says American food is not good has not eat with the locals, fantastic. Our good ol'Ford fired right up, 18 mths sitting and 2 hits on the starter and she's off, brilliant. Grasy has added some upgrades, TV, DVD, Vacuum, etc, will feel guilty using his brand new Maxxis.(http://i1365.photobucket.com/albums/r743/plee5252/IMG_0263_zpsat52rmhf.jpg) (http://s1365.photobucket.com/user/plee5252/media/IMG_0263_zpsat52rmhf.jpg.html)

Out with the old, our old engine parts form the 629cc engine from 2013. The thing done a great job, 6.8 hrs on it including the mile at Sac. It all looked Ok, minor scuffing is all.(http://i1365.photobucket.com/albums/r743/plee5252/IMG_0296_zpsx0fnyryc.jpg) (http://s1365.photobucket.com/user/plee5252/media/IMG_0296_zpsx0fnyryc.jpg.html)

My new motor assembled, lot of people have helped with this, Len Norris with the ports and machining, Grasy, Wattsy, Humey, Pag and Jeff Hawbaker along with some others I can't recall. Basically I/we have lost 110cc, added mass, less overlap on the cam and increased compression. The thing is fast, although the other one is as well. Very different in their delivery, the 629 was brutal out of slow corners suited to Aussie dirt track, the new one is good everywhere, even worked well at Taree. Proof will be at Savannah Georgia, Half-Mile straight up, it will be cool.
-
Looks the goods, Pete. Good luck over there this year, hope everything goes well. We are off to Canberra next weekend for the Kings and Queens, Dirt Track Sat, Long Track Sun, they have done a hell of a lot of work on the track, Turn One looks fast. Oh, by the way, I see you have your Ball Pein clearance and fit adjusting tool in the pic. :)
-
Very handy that ball-pein, went together well mate, little issue with a 3mm dowel that holds the ignition rotor on crank. The old one would not come out, no problem, I'll just go down to the hardware place in Whitney an get a 3mm drill bit and make one. Of course no metric drills in the USA, found a screwdriver at 3mm though. You would love it here Al.
-
Only two weeks to go and I will be over there , driving across America :o
Peter did you take the counter balance out , was thinking of taking mine out have herd a couple of guys doing it .
Any way have fun
-
Yes I did Mick, rebalanced the crank. Couple of different trains of thought with that. Have spent a bit if time reducing engine weight, it is now lighter than an XL350 engine.
-
Good luck Pete.....how many miles to the gallon does the motorhome get?......don't tell anyone how cheap it was.....lol.
-
Hi Davey, surprisingly its good on fuel, $2.00 a gallon here. Good to here that V10 fire right up.
-
Frustrating day in Bills shed today, could not get the 40mm to run properly, went back to the 38mm carb we have used here before, engine logged 11,020rpm on the digital thingo. Big engine speed, not the plan to run it that hard, just trying to get the jetting right.

Volusia Half-Mile, Florida. We were talking with Mick Kirkness at Savannah, what a champ, maintaining his National number in the USA. Travelled to Volusia to see him race but messed up and arrived after the last race finished that arvo. Raced the next day and got 3rd in the 500 and 4th in the Over 50. Great track, not quite as quick as Savannah but got the gearing spot-on.

That beeza is "WAY COOL" !!! all the best for the trip pete ;)

Love the banner in background, a bloke called Craig Estelle, former National number is too fast for me in the 500. Bike is good. The Over 50 scene is big but I am with the leaders.

Been hard to put this up and am a week late with update. We have had a great time out on the gulf and to Key West, currently in Orlando recovering from Disney. Happy to be running 2nd in the 500 Vintage Championship and 3rd in the Over 50 gig. Really have had a great bike, fast and reliable thanks to friends from home (Len Norris). Wanted to be in a better position but it is what it is. Mangled finger is healing and hopefully be good to go in Waco, Texas.

Keep up the good work and stay safe.

Had a quick chat with the mechanic that prepped the new Yamaha twin, debuted at Savannah. They have high hopes and given all the fast Kawi's require a 3K stroker crank, they figure there will be a cost advantage.

Give you an idea how cold it was in Georgia, by the time we raced at the Short Track in Florida we were wearing T-shirts. Thanks to Nancy and Bill loaning blankets for our drive across Texas in the ice and snow.
-
That's the factory Harley mechanic in the background.
-
Been to la , Vegas , Grand Canyon , monument valley ,played in the snow at Colorado , onto Texas .
I left Texas yesterday ,I went pass the Waco turn off didn't realise there
Was a race sett for there :'(
I am now in Louisiana and seen the bonnie and Clyde ambush site in gibsland .
Heading to Mississippi today towards New York its a great place over here been a blast driving from Vegas to here so far only a few slip ups driving on the other side of the road .
I like the big pick ups and usa muscle cars the Chevy carmeo , Dodge and mustangs
That's all sir as they say over here ;D
-
Good on ya Mick, we retuning to Texas soon. You have covered some ground. If you go through Alabama get to Battleship park and see the USS Alabama in dry-dock.
-
We stayed in Florence Alabama last night and watched a college baseball game today in Alabama
That was cool .
we just turned up in Nashville man this place is big and talk about life in the fast lane the roads are heaps busy for a Saturday night .
Pete I missed the Alabama ship we did see the big rivers there nice spots .
I don't realy want to go home to oz having to much fun here , different sites every day .
-
You are right about fun Mick, you have to see the Hotel in Nashville, 57 acres under roof (dome) it is mind-blowing. Ask anyone there, they will direct you to it (it was the biggest in the world, now second). We are off to see the Blue Angles today at an air show, should be cool.
-
Great to follow your adventures, keep it coming. A regular forum poster referred to USA major events as "plastic", looks the real deal to me.
-
Nothing "plastic" about the racers, they are the real deal. They ride on the limit, on tracks that claim a life per year (on average), with very little health insurance. Add to that, all that I have met are courteous and make time to talk with the fans.
You would have to spend some time here to have some understanding, its the same as Aussie racing but different.
-
Went to see the second largest hotel in the world at Nashville with the glass roof thanks for the tip Pete.
Then went to the old part of Nashville that was cool the daughter brought some cow girl boots there .
We are now in Kentucky at a town called bardstown cool small town old buildings and where bourbon is made .
Would me good if I could add photos to the posts .
-
Cool Mick, those old towns that litter the countryside can be so interesting. You are just north of Mammoth Caves, we went through them on a trip, very pretty area and the caves were neat. Not sure if it warrants a trip through them, but I do remember it is where I first seen them lightning bugs, so go outside in the dark. We are on I 10 heading west to race at Waco on the weekend.
-
Thanks for the tips Pete 8)
The daughter did mention about those bugs that light up at night a few days back .
I like the old style white two storey homes with the America flag on them and the rocking chair on the veranda with the swinging chair as well have seen a few on our travels .
We are in Lewis burg West Virginia it has the old part of town with the cool old shops etc .
Today we are heading to Washington dc to check out some sites White House etc .
Good luck for the weekend races Pete ;)

Raced Waco double header, Sat & Sun. Track was fantastic, had a lot of fun and finally won a few races! Bill Davis came out and enjoyed catching up with mates, some of his MX mates seen the light and are now Dirt-trackers. We are at Bill's now tearing the 500 apart, looks good apart from the tensioner breaking up, anyone have any spares?

These guys (blokes) hounded me all weekend, the bloke behind me just come back racing, he was using a walking stick and looked like he needed it. In the previous pic Roger Johnson (4) is 65 yrs old (ex National number) and just rode the age races ie over 45 with me and co and the over 60. Real fast and sensible, he avoids the money races (pro) because it gets dangerous when the loot comes out. Oh yeah, he beat me.

Pic from Waco, meet up with Jerry Kosinski and his mates, that's Jerry second from left. Meet Jerry in Little Rock in 2012 when chasing Triumph clutch plates for Tom Laird's Bike I rode that year. Jerry's shop is huge with a bunch of Ron Wood Rotax's set-up for World Champion son John, was a great visit and great to see him again.

Colleen at her photogenic best, been a great trip, missed the targets I set myself but had a go. I'm sure if I had not fell in the first heat race I went in I may have went a little better but that's racing and instead of going to some AMA Vintage rounds later this yr I will wait till the 2016 US season and concentrate on Australia for this yr. Thanks very much to our Texas family Nancy and Bill Davis and to all my friends that helped me with the engine, you done real good Len Norris it was fast! Currently leading the VDTRA 600 AM class as the first 2 rounds were at Waco.

Have to pass on some news out of US, friend Jeff Hawbaker has taken a year off racing and contacted mate Rich King to race the Kansas series. Rich is former factory Harley rider, National No 2#, retired in 2008. After changes to the vintage Honda 500 Rich won the Open Pro against current pro racers on modern machinery! Clocked at 110mph in Stockton Half-mile. Cool as, Rich is 52.
