Title: Show us your trail bike
Post by: TT on January 11, 2010, 02:59:56 pm
Just to help this section get up and running, show us what you trail ride on.  :)

I'm using this fat thing at the moment.............

But I've just picked up this little beauty and it will take over trail duties once I get it over from yumastepside's place.  ;D

Great thread Tony...Love your first above photo..that dirt colour brings back wonderful memories, also there is nothing like feeling the fresh air in ya face scrambling though the bush, only to be hit in the face with a big fat grasshopper   :D   :-*   Love it

Yes, they make some of the so called 'pro bikes' look very sad sometimes.
A well ridden one will take you almost anywhere you want to point it-just don't ley it fall on you!!/ :)

My 1982 PE175Z just after i semi restored it. I have it in bits again at the moment cleaning it up and checking out the top end. I wanted a 250 but this came up cheap and I'm more than happy with it. Definitely need to take it out more though.

I think of this as my main Vinduro bike, but its also the newest/best trail bike I've got, so I guess it should be in this thread:

Through a bunch of lucky deals and the generosity of a few mates (particularly Roger, Greg and Marty), it owes me less than $500.

Here's the 'modern' enduro bike. When its complete, its the bike I can ride the fastest, even compared to newer stuff:

Turns out that 1994 model TM forks have different internals to all of the other Marzocchi Magnums out there, and Cessnock Motorcycles have been somewhat 'software challenged', so I can't even order the parts.  >:(

Thinking seriously about a late model KDX200 as the new do-everything bike. Maybe a WR200 if I can find the right bike for the right price when I've actually got the cash (which now that I say it out loud, is probably never...).
Although the brand new 2008 model Husky WR250s for $8500 are mighty tempting... If I wasn't so allergic to debt, I reckon I'd already own one.

Here is my 'modern' trailie . Went out for its first outing on the weekend. I was very impressed. It is a '98 yz250 that was adr'ed by Bert Flood. Must have a flywheel weight as it's so good and usable. Had an absolute fat time on it.

Someone about my size mustn't have tightened the axle nut so some engineering was required to keep the fun factor going. Luckily the locator was still there otherwise it would have been game over.

The DRZ,had suspension done, air box, jetting, full yoshi ti exhaust,(not in picture added later ) went form a wollowy pig to a bike that can run with the best of them, you do feel the weight at the end of the day, but hey it keeps you fit and when you get back of your light weight vintage racer youll be better prepered for the new season.

And 15000kms between valve checks, not high maintanence like the others, and if you want more power 470 kit will put you on par with any 450 :o

Thanks for the nice words on my old DT1 fellas. It's a sweet old girl and the last concourse resto I can see myself doing. You've got to be too anal and disciplined for that caper. I'd rather build bikes that reflect my own style these days.
The photo was taken at Narabeen Lagoon as a part of an ADB Shoot in 05. Too late Tony, she's already been dirty but is all spik'n'span again..

Is that 'cause of long shocks or a short sidestand?
Top job Mr Firko.
I recall a mate that rode with us that had a DT360-shite what a monster. Had one footpeg missing but never seemed to bother him at all. And he could kick start it in thongs-not normal for a Kiwi, and he rode with an open face with no peak. Total tosser but shit he was fast!!

No, the shocks are stock length NOS original OEM Kayabas. The reason for needing the rocks or a pine cone under the sidestand is that the sidestand bracket on the frame is bent but I didn't notice it until I'd painted the frame and fitted the sidestand. As the sidestand was the very last thing fitted I wasn't about to pull the whole thing apart, blast the frame, straighten the bracket, repaint it and then put the whole bloody thing back together again. The nice piece of hardwood that's under it now will do for as long as I own the bike. ;D

If I get it done in time I'll bring it to Broadford for you.

The old XR400 takes me everywhere I ask it to, slowly, but lotsa fun. It has taken me all over the Victorian high country without missing a beat.

Viper in Victoria has an open class for modern bikes, which I entered one time last year after removing all the lights, speedo, etc. The other kids on the starting line laughed at me on my XR. Then proceeded to lap me.

It was fun, but I don't seem to be able to ride faster than trailriding speed in motocross... guess I need some practice!

cheers Jady

Sadly many of the kids of today think that XR400 is a vintage bike.  I took my '00 KTM EXC 400 last year at Pacific Park a couple of years ago and overheard a young bloke describe it to his mate as a 'sick old vintage bike'.  I didn't know whether to laugh or cry. I get the same from the kids because my mobile phone is a basic unit and doesn't  even have an inbuilt camera. They think it's funny.

Cool XR though.

My cousin has a new wr450f he is always telling me how good it is. It was funny to see his face when the big PE was coming up fast on him he couldn't outrun me or do anything my bike couldn't.

You don't need the newest bike to have fun all my mates just assume because my bikes are old they are useless but when the see it on the trails they get a suprise and who cares if it were useless as long as you are having fun.

Hey Tony, I got a NOS Preston Petty headlight, still in the bag and including TWO PP stickers the other day for $40US! There's another one on the Swapmeet right now for $10. They were ugly bloody things when new but I reckon they're kinda pretty now. Sweet TS BTW.

Hey Doc, while I've got you here...I think you've answered this before but what's the difference between  '75 TS 250, '76 TS250 and TM250J engines? I've got all three and we're trying to work out which one will be best in the upcoming flat tracker TM.

Now, resume normal viewing....trail bikes.

Looks to me the mighty TS185 has plastic levers and PP Mudders too!..that is one trick bike with some serious patina you have there Bill! serious! fit a hooker pipe and an era plastic vesco tank and it's the complete deal 8)

Tony, I'd probably just give it a wash and rub back where ever needed, a splash of black, a couple of tank emblems and ride it as is 8)

Firko, I hate to give wrong advice so I'll say this, the later black '76 TS would be the best to hot up due to having a little extra something but I'm not sure if the electrofused barrel could be 'cost effectively' modified..???..Lozza!

Swap the gear clusters, primary drive and ignition for TM items and retain the TS cases to match the later TS cylinder (the later TS also run a normal 2 bolt rubber push in type carb spigot ala TM which save manufacturing anything). Someone like me takes the easier way and uses the normal '74/'75 TM or TM styled TS bits because there's no chrome bore to worry about but for actual outright HP I'd reckon a modded '76 TS would deliver the most ponies. This is all only if the cylinder could be effectively replated or maybe even rebored to a regualr oversize after the port work. Again, I assume the grand master Loz will know the answers ;) Most of the difference with the 72-75 TM/TS is the early J and K had the pushrod operated clutch setup. Different outer cases and longer selector shaft but the rest is much of a muchness right through. Early exhaust exit angle is different also, a minor issue. Personally I'd use the '74/'75 TM but it depends if you looking or can afford the absolute which dirt track requires.

Another big question here, is the '75/'76 TS a follow or not? same goes for the '76/'77 TS125, are they a follow on or flow on? :-\ I really wish I knew for sure.

]With this bike it's not all that important at present Doc. Neither of us will be riding opens so it'll only be used for club days and the Bonanza. Never say never of course so if it does seem that the bike might get a run at the DT Nats we'll look into it further. Are the engines identical externally? Does the earlier '75 barrell go straight on the '76 bottom end?

.......don't see a problem with the old TS bj,I reckon they're great. One of the things that annoys me when young blokes come looking for an " old bike just to ride around the paddock on " is when you show them an old twin shock they say " oh no ! Its gotta have discs and mono shock and water cooled, blah, blah, blah!!!!"  Thats not an old bike to ride around the paddock on ! My scrub bikes an  '89 XR250, I think its the newest bike I own. There's a bloke with a '74 husky sportsman up the road, that he just rides around the farm on, now that would make a sweet traillie    ;D ;D ;D

This is my main trail bike. I have one that's 1 year older , different brand that we are working on now , but this is my first choice for the trail.
Before we restored it in the fall of 2001
(http://i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq113/sachs175/Penton%20stuff/125before.jpg)
First ride after we got it trail worthy spring of 2002

yea Gary, the CR looks like a pretty good thing :) I was wondering about the PE also ;)

Mario, when I look at where I keep my bikes I ponder my sanity but one day I'll have room to move amongst them in a climate controlled environment :P I keep most tucked up under a low set house (about 5 are stored in dirt) Once a month ritual to pull them all out and clean off the worst as they do get some elements and rust never sleeps :o Then there's 3 at Mum's and another couple are minded by a little old lady of 87 :D  There's also a couple at Childers at big bro's house and ummm..yeah, it's an absolute pain and I'm crazy with aspirations of grandeur that may never eventuate..nothing new :D

Nice light-weight front brake on the CR!

I might even have a spare master cylinder, hose and caliper around, oldskool.
And maybe even some 87 side covers (rather than the 85/86 ones fitted).

The guy I bought it off told me it wouldn't shift into first because of a little pin somewhere. When I finally got around to pulling it apart, I found the transmission had completely destroyed itself. And I mean completely. How nothing made it's way outside the cases is beyond me............  ::)

Still, I got quite a few good parts off it that I can use on other bikes.

My latest purchase:
http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=130415202825&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT

I didn't know it when I bought it (nor did the previous owner), but its the ex-Jake Stapleton 4-day bike - first in class, and second outright. :)
http://www.ma.org.au/fileadmin/user_upload/Documents/National_Results/Enduro/Australian_Four_Day_Enduro/2004_A4DE_Results.pdf

And fudge me, its fast. At least as fast as the modern 125MXers I've ridden, while having a quite a bit more right down low and super strong in the midrange (all by 125 standards, of course).

This is my "newest" trail bike;

An original 1983 model XT600ZL Tenere. I bought it from my younger brother yesterday. Well, truth be known, he dropped it at my place and I have promised to pay him some money for it.

It is a bit rough, as would be any bike that has spent 27 years in the bush, but it is as original a Tenere as you are likely to find anywhere and the price was definitly right. I have started it up and taken it a quick spin around the yard, and it has several unplesant rattles coming from the top end. I hope that it is only something simple like a couple of loose tappets and maybe a stuck camchain tensioner. In a few weeks, when I get some spare time, I will be pulling the topend down to fix a minor oil leak from the cylinder gasket so I will have an oportunity to check out the condition of the engine then.

The plan is to tidy it up and do some minor (non-permenant) modifications to it and set it up as an adventure tourer.

Those motors normally have a bit of top end rattle. With the tappets, the trick is to do them by feel and not with feeler gauges. Had a really nice 76 XT500 in the otherday and once the tappets were set right on that, well far out that is the quietest 500 ive ever heard, the motor was quiet as a mouse. Hadnt done much work though. 600's are also known for a bit of piston slap noise. If your gonna rebore it and stick a new piston in it, then steer well clear of anything other than standard compression. Wiseco 11:1 requires min 98 octane plus added octane booster or race fuel otherwise they really ping bad, even on road use. But with the high compression piston they do go really good though.

Also make sure all the engine/swingarm bolts are tight, especially the one on top of the motor and at the back where the swingarm goes through. If the cases crack they are not easy to find in good condition ;)

seeing this bike reminds me of a when 5 mates and i rode from Melb to Birdsville Races on KLX650's & XT600 Terere's. a few years after the Croc Dundee thing was big worldwide we came across this Crazy Austrian riding by himself around Arkaroola area and stopped for a chat, i noticed he had a HUGE knife inside a sheath that was mounted to the triple clamps so he could access it quickly if needed. he said "Australia Very Dangerous Place"  ::)

I remember seeing a Tenere tank hanging from a rafters at the old Penrith Motorcycle Wreckers when Brian Clarkson and Billy Unsworth ran it. I had a TT600 at the time and briefly considered buying it until Clarko quoted some obscene price for it.
It was gone not long after so the price mustn't have been as off putting to someone.

I've never ridden one, but they must be scary, top heavy when full of fuel.  :o
My DR is bad enough and it's tanks are set much lower.
That said, they're still a cool looking bike and the one that started all the Paris-Dakar replicas.  ;D

I have the 750 version and it carries 32L! while it can be a handful with a full tank that's nothing compared to wet clay or deep sand. To do 500 or 600 ks a day on it is a real test for a little guy like me and I give credit to anyone the rode them in the Dakar.
I need a cdi box for mine right now so if anyone knows of one pm me pls.

My KTonda has had a bit of a face lift and some new suspension ideas tried out.
I'm about to get a new set of front springs and see how they go.
This bike does not feel fast as it has absolutely no power hit at all, it just flows. It's surprising just how fast it gets along.
Up here when it's 35 degrees and 90%+ humidity the last thing you want is something that will wear you down.

this is the '97 300exc that 'Ten Peg' Barsby bequeathed to me when he was sent work in the Salt Mines of WA. It's rough around the edges (and the middle) but isn't as bad as it looks (I hope ;D)

Having to babysit Nathan's latest KDX200 (I think it's the 18th one he's bought in an effort to get one running) inspired me to bring it in from under the lean-to and put it in the shed to start the tidy-up. I've been collecting parts for the last couple of months, so it shouldn't take too long. First thing is to figure out how to pull these new fangled forks apart.

A real legally registered CR125!. Still has the compliance plate. i would leave it as a enduro bike because you wouldnt be able to get another one easily registed like that anymore, it would be a shame to convert it back to MX. It might also be of more value to someone else as an enduro bike. Anyway your bike, your choice :)

You don't see many WMWs out there that are that complete. You would be mad to make it into just another CR125.

Ride it to the shops for a bit of fun, but please don't convert it…  8)

I realise that you're entitled to do whatever you want to your bike Darren but I'd have thought that an astute collector like yourself would see that preserving a rare (and immaculate) WMW CR125 would be preferable to turning it into a replica Mugen. I'd be looking for a roughy to start the Mugen project, there's got to be a bunch of them out there rotting away in garden sheds just waiting to be discovered  :o. No you need a host site to upload your photos to eg photobucket you then just upload the pic it gives you link options to show it anywhere you want very easy to do.

http://photobucket.com/ is a very easy site to use. ;)

Unfortunetly you cant do it the way you are trying I know exactly what you mean but it doesn't work that way.

yea, i reckon some blue vinyl is the go for mine. when i got time to head to the bike shop must buy some. i put a rm front plate on mine. love the look of em. looks evil. still have the head light in the shed. need to buy a bracket an number plate that fits on top.
yea the old man picked that up... pretty original. tank has some repaired areas. but starts first time no worries. goes very well for a older 4 stoke. is a 500 has the sp motor in it.

Here is a pic of my latest aquisition. An IT465J US model. Notice it has no blinker tabs, battery etc. It was a barn find in the US complete with original IRC tyres. The bike is 100% original. Plan to take it out next month for an Annual Yamaha IT Forum ride. Should be a hoot :D

i took it around Tas. 3,00km's in three weeks solo. the bike has never ever let me down. i commute around Melbourne on it, it could use a bigger front disc and firmer suspension but i think it's time i moved onto something a bit bigger, i spend more time on the tarmac then on the dirt. might go for an XR600R or maybe a DR650 next.

this is the '97 300exc that 'Ten Peg' Barsby bequeathed to me when he was sent work in the Salt Mines of WA.

Finally got this thing back together. New wheel bearings and spokes, rebuilt forks, rear shock, all linkages, tires chain etc, and new brake seals, pistons, & pads. Levers, throttle blah, blah, blah. Still needs lighting to be sorted for rego, but it absolutely goes like stink so I'm happy with it regardless of it still looking a bit rough. I will never rebuild a late model dunger again as long as I live!

I feel your pain Mainline, I've owned a few "Modern" KTM's over the years but this particular series are an absolute shit to work on. Try having to take the tank and seat off to access the spark plug, even getting to the choke is a f%^$ing nightmare. Might be better on the MX versions with a smaller tank but this is horrible. I love my KTM's, but this is on the out.

Title: Re: Show us your trail bike

What makes you say you wouldn't do another late model ??

the complexity of them, the fragility (compared to the old gear) the lack of room to work on them, etc. As Evo mentioned, the sparkplug is a nightmare (although I've got it sussed with a standard spanner and supple fingers ;D) the choke is absolutely ridiculous, and the first set of new (acme brand) fork seals leaked before I'd ridden the bike. Allballs fork seals seem to have sorted the problem though.

So why would you build a 2 stroke with a plug you can't change trackside??? WTF were they thinking?
Having said that though, I see cars everyday that aren't meant to be worked on-try reaching the oil filter on a Vitara Tdi or the starter on the V6 model.

They were thinking "This is the year of our lord 1995! Two-strokes don't foul plugs every five minutes! Why don't we give the bike a decent fuel range and good ergos, rather than pandering for muppets who don't jet their bikes right?!".

:D

Seriously, I can't recall the last time I changed a plug on a modern. My WR200/YZ125 hybrid is a nightmare to swap plugs on, thanks to the PV controller being in the way - it worried me at first, but over seven or eight rides it's still on the original plug.

I owned that VB 308 SLR for 5 or 6 years and can only recall changing that front plug once compared to the yearly job on the rest. As far as my beloved Jag goes, I'm so lucky to have an old Jag specialist mechanic who has a special plug changing gizmo he made for the V12. Thankfully I don't drive the car as often as I probably should so I've only changed the plugs once in 6 years of ownership.

Already done Vaughn, when I got the car it'd been sitting on chassis stands for 12 years and the brakes were locked solid. My old Mechanic showed me the "easy" way to do them....remove the whole rear end from the car. There's only 6 bolts and a cable or two and only takes 20 minutes. Funny you mention brakes, I've only this week got a NOS pair of front calipers from the US so will soon be into that relatively simple job. Despite all of its British foibles it's truly magnificent car to drive, especially at speed. It'll be even better once I (eventually) fit the 5 speed Gertrag trans.

You're going to start thinking all I want to do is argue with you but.... ;) about two days ago I was thinking of starting a thread "Why are modern two strokes so F%^&ing difficult to jet"
Years ago I never changed plugs, jets, needle clip settings, slides ect as much as I do today. DT's, elsinores, TS's would all run forever on a tin of BP zoom on whatever plug you had laying around, auto lube, pre-mix whatever.
Over the last few years (since the kids started racing) I have had nothing but issues with plugs.
I was at the point of selling my sons yz85 after about 6 months because it simply defied jetting logic, which finally was fixed with a slide/needle combo change, until a few days ago, when the temp rose by 15 degrees and the humidity hit the roof, guess what, fouled plug in two laps, new plug, fouled in another two laps.
Makes these new fuel injected fourstrokes very tempting.
Title: Re: Show us your trail bike
Post by: Nathan S on January 05, 2013, 08:44:28 pm
New bikes make more, better power - we expect a lot more from them. Almost everything is easy to jet to the limits of a Mikuni VM...

Mikuni TMXes are also rubbish. Sensitive to temperature and altitude changes, hardly anyone stocks bits for them, and there's not a lot of collective knowledge about needles.
The TMXX is a fair bit better, but I'd still fit a PWK to any modern that gave a moment's grief with a Mikuni.
Title: Re: Show us your trail bike
Post by: evo550 on January 05, 2013, 10:56:57 pm
I haven't had a mikuni fitted bike since a 1992 YZ250 all Keihins either PJ or PWK.
Modern carbs seem to be far more sensitive to enviromental changes, temp, humidity, distance above sea level.
Plugs also "foul" differently now, years ago carbon and gunk would build up and eventually bridge the gap, this could be fixed trailside with a bit of whatever by cleaning the gap and off you go again. All the plugs I foul nowdays are due to a buildup across the insulator, can't fix that at the track....unless you've got a new plug.
Title: Re: Show us your trail bike
Post by: EML on January 06, 2013, 11:48:28 am
Yep, the carbon builds up and shorts out the insulator, and it comes from the additives in the fuel, not from oil or other build up. And yes, a new plug is the only answer, no point in cleaning it.

The new EFI two strokes will be the go.  :D

Serious?
You may have noticed that the hand grip on the right can rotate on the handlebars. Rotating this grip occasionally will greatly reduce the number of fouled plugs you experience.
:D

PJs are rubbish and should have never been fitted to an MX or enduro bike, BTW.

You're not using Shell fuel are you?

BP or Caltex---Shell has threatened to sue if we keep complaining--so we just don't use it. Note: the local 7/11 is a Shell outlet in disguise.

I think you'll find that 7/11 took over the Mobil stations Australia wide. I'm pretty friendly with the Pakistani boys who own my local 7/11 and they told me they've been using Mobil for at least two years. 7/11 took over Krispy Kreme donuts too for what it's worth ::).

Kia ora bro

It's called a 350 Freeride Mick. It's a sort of cross between and a trials bike and an enduro.
Climbs hills like a goat and is insanely fast on single track. Pretty much suits what I want a bike to do.

First new bike in 40 years, the last one was the Suzuki TS90MX back in '73

Biggest trouble is Evo that they're only new once! 51 minutes on mine and it's already been dropped

Yes they are registerable. That was a bonus for me as I see a time coming when you will need rego to be able to ride anywhere. NT is pretty easy going but if I go interstate on hols or move (which is on the cards) rego may matter more.

Definitely the best stock forks I've ridden with - I know the springs are too soft for me, but they just work so well that I'm a bit frightened of messing with them...

Oh, and an electric starter that works! ;)

Yep, all Beta. The motor *looks* like a combination of GasGas and KTM (with a better starter motor than either...;) ). Considering they are the two best established 2T enduro motors, this is a good thing.
It's healthy down low, but not abrupt. I kinda expected a bit more from it right down low, TBH - but stock gearing, and about 2% oxygen yesterday means it will only be better from there. I wish I'd taken my Husky 360 along for a direct comparison - I think the Husky is a fair bit stronger right down low, but runs out of revs a lot earlier. The Husky definitely vibrates more!

8-litre tank. IMS was quick with bringing out a big tank for the Beta 4Ts - I'm assuming they'll do the same with the 2Ts if they need it.

Hey Brent, those new Freerides are the ducks nuys I reckon! I really hope they take off and don't drop from the market. Others will follow hopefully.

I know they feel super agile but physically, how big are they to sit on. Like a normal enduro or smaller / lower?

What about the noise levels? How quiet? What can you compare it to?

And another one! They are a detuned 350 (around 22 ponies?) must be grunty but how's the acceleration compare?

Having done enduro / trials these things make me drool! And I've had kato's before and love 'em.

Hi Barra,The Freeride sits between a full sized enduro and my wife's CRF230 size wise. Easy to touch the ground but not cramped while riding sitting down.
Perhaps a little cramped standing with my dodgy back and I may raise the bars about 20mm to get the height I'm used to.

Quiet? We live in an elevated house, wifey was watching TV with the aircon going and she only knew I was riding around under the house and around the yard when she saw me through the window! Think of an old Honda SL with the std muffler. I have not touched the mufflers or airbox.

Power, I do a lot of hill climbs and it always has power to spare. Acceleration is good but not startling. I've read a lot of comments about the low power output. I doubt I will try and upgrade mine as I find in tight single track (which I love riding) I'm running down bigger more powerful bikes.
Watch a 450 in tight going, hard on the gas for a few seconds, coast into a corner, brake, turn and back on the gas for a few more seconds. The Freeride may not have a lot of horsepower but you can use it all. In single track you just hold the power on and turn. Goes where you are looking at!
I don't see this as a bike you buy on the off chance you will like it. I see it as the bike you buy when you know what you want. I can see a few coming up for sale when people find out they are not what they wanted them to be. It is a niche market bike

It would be an easy bike to learn to ride on (like my wife's CRF230) but it won't hold back an experienced rider (unlike the CRF).
My wife has ridden it and it has improved her riding and confidence.

Everything is light and smaller but I wouldn't say things were delicate. I wouldn't put one on a supercross track though.

My first mod was a heavier rear spring and a bash plate, the standard one is a joke. I wasn't impressed with the optional one either.

I also managed to dent the radiator when I dropped it on a rock. Very surprising as it is so tucked in. A radiator guard is being made at the moment.

This is a personal thing and I can live happily without it but I'd like more flywhel weight. Stealthy (or what ever) say there is no room to fit one.
The next major thing will be a REKLUSE clutch as soon as they get the bugs worked out for this model.

I fitted a REKLUSE clutch to the Freeride and took it out today.
It made a mockery of the worst climbs I could find!
My only regret is that I didn't do it sooner  8)

I'm now working in a selector valve for the left hand lever. I'll be able to switch between the LHS lever being a clutch or rear brake.

Barra, the pipe is flattened from the factory and nothing catches on clothes, boots or body when you are riding.

The best bike just got better

Title: Re: Show us your trail bike
Post by: brent j on July 02, 2014, 08:47:08 pm
Hey Twisty,

Here's a pick of the valve in place. You can see the actuating lever in the up position, this means the left hand lever is currently a rear brake.

With the lever in the down position the left  hand lever becomes the clutch as per normal. No matter what the valve is set to the rear foot brake always works as per normal.

So its not a dual lever arrangement like the Clake?

I've often wondered why a clake type arrangement isn't used widely by pro racers.  Seems to me handlebar mounted rear brake gives lots of advantages over foot - right hand corners, going down steep hills (where you want to be able to lean right back - which you can't do if got to operate rear brake) and lots more besides.

Be keen to hear more about your system Brent (and all cred to you for making it happen - fabricating it yourself?).  The latest clake design means you have what looks like one lever, but is actually two in one.  Take a bit to get used to it, but once you do, you can moderate between clutch and brake engagement easily, or actuate both.  I race dirt track these days, and remember hearing paul caslick's 'hot tip' was to drag the rear brake coming out of corners, to stop back end coming out too much.  Well, there's no way I can do that on a left or a right hand corner - leg/frame geometry just won't allow it.  The clake would allow it!

Only trouble is the cost - over a grand.
Title: Re: Show us your trail bike
Post by: brent j on July 04, 2014, 03:50:43 pm
Nathan, it's a brent j invention  :)

Twisty, I'm familiar with the "CLAKE" and it's a great idea but it pulls the clutch in before the brake comes on. There's always a crossover between the two

The two sections below are what I posted on a KTM forum

Recently I fitted a Rekluse auto clutch to my KTM Freeride.
I love it but could see a few improvements to suit myself a little more.
Stalling was eliminated (Freerides are prone to stalling if you try and ride them like an old fashioned trials bike) but there was a lack of engine braking on really, really slow trials type downhills.

I also found you can't just stall it when you stuff up on a hill climb and have the bike stay where you are. The clutch is disengaged when the motor stops so the bike runs away.

There are left side rear brake handlebar levers to operate the rear brake but they add a second lever which I didn't want.

Being a machinist with a back ground in hydraulics I figured there must be an option to using two levers.

With the KTM having a hydraulic clutch and hydraulic rear brake it seemed logical to divert the pressure from the clutch master cylinder to where I wanted it, when I wanted it.

I modified a pneumatic valve to handle higher pressure and connected it into the clutch feed line just beside the motor on the right hand side.
Now I can select the left hand lever to be a clutch which gives me the ability to check and set the adjustment on the Rekluse and also to bump start the bike if the battery goes flat. This is possible as the new model Rekluse has an adjustable slave cylinder so the clutch can be adjusted to work like normal.

For the majority of time the left hand lever is used as a rear brake. The foot pedal works no matter what the left hand lever is set to so I always have that option.

I like to challenge myself on hillclimbs and technical riding. At 54 years old I find my balance and reflexes are not what they once were. In the past if I stopped on a hill I had to put my left foot down and use the rear foot brake. Now I can put both down and grab the left hand rear brake which is much safer.

I've tried several different types of pipes and hoses but settled on steel automotive brake pipes with flared fittings.

To add a few more details.

The valve is a 5 port, 2 position valve

Pressure goes in through the centre port on the top and out either of the bottom ports as selected.
The top ports, front and back are return lines. These allow the not in use circuit to vent back to the master cylinder.
This is needed as, if you are using the brake, you must allow excess pressure in the clutch slave cylinder to vent. Or, as heat builds up the fluid will expand and cause the clutch to slip.
Same with the brake. If you are using the clutch any heat generated in the rear brake, by using the foot brake, will cause the fluid to expand and the brake will drag.

Due to the orientation of the valve it is very easy to bleed the system

The rear brake works by pressurizing the foot brake master cylinder. I've made a liner to go inside the rear brake reservoir so it can be pressurized from the hand lever. Pressure goes through the master cylinder to the rear caliper. I can use the foot pedal, the hand lever or both at once.

The other option is to use a shuttle valve. This does away with pressuring the rear master cylinder. The two pressure lines (hand and foot) go into two inlets of the shuttle valve and pressure comes out through the single outlet. A shuttle inside the valve blocks off the unused inlet to prevent pressure escaping via the other, unused, pressure line.
Moving the shuttle uses some fluid volume so the first time you use either control there will be some excess movement

As for all that pneumatic valving business, well, way over my head mate.  Sounds pretty nifty tho.

Do you know Mick Turnbull?

He's the bloke that rode one at the A4DE this year. Apparently there were six brought into the country - he knew the whereabout of four or five of them. I wonder if your's is one of the 'missing' bikes?

Here's mine: (http://i46.photobucket.com/albums/f128/annaandnathan/Bikestuff/DSCN1184.jpg)
Be very interested in your 96 seat cover if you re-fit the original for your bike.

No i dont Know Mick Turnbull sorry but i did watch him at the 4 day enduro. I know of 4 other 95 pink Tm's in the local area and a 92 6 day enduro but no other 94's I recently bought a tank and seat from germany for mine but they dont fit there close but not right i can also get NOS plastics if you need some i have a local connection that can get most parts for the early ones.

I,me getting 25/26kpl.
Mates 450 EXC gets exactly the same but is not working as hard on the tar bits.

The main attraction of this DRZ was the $2200 price inc rego.  :)
Had to buy the adventure extras tho.

I'm around 20 km/l but usually working the poor little thing pretty hard chasing bigger bikes, considerably less in the soft sand. With the exception of sand riding or strong head winds I generally get about 400km to a tank.

Wow, what sort of work was required to fit the 426 box?

Just $580 for the new gears and bearings from the us and a slight bit of grinding the case to accommodate the larger 1st gear. Otherwise it slots straight in.

I went out for my last ride of the year this morning. This old Ford race car is way out in the woods. I'm guessing after it was retired from the track some kids took it out for a beat run and this is where it croaked. Good times.
