OLd Bike Ignition Options

Stock, Motoplat, PVL, are there anymore options out there for old two stroke bikes?

A friend of mine adapted a Go Kart ignition for one of his bikes.  Are two stroke ignitions fairly universal except for the mounting plat and rotor/flywheel taper?

Yes , I had brand new PVL in the box that did not work. Chineze pit bike stuff that can be purchased for $100 can be adapted.
Current bikes. KTM MC 250 77 Husky CR 360 77, Husky 82 420 Auto Bitsa XR 200 project. Dont need a pickle just need to ride my motorcickle

Most late model 125/250 ignitions can be adapted. Post 97 CR 250 has 12v output so you can run programmable ignitions. The ignition curves are what you should look at.

Electrex World, Horse Power Ignitions and Powerdynamo (MZB) all make good ignitions for vintage two strokes. Include stator, coil, CDI and flywheel. Electrex World stators often allow you to reuse the original flywheel.

Horse Power Ignitions http://www.hpi.be/ in Belgium appear to have ignitions for everything.

You can buy directly from them.

I have got one on my Maico 490 and I am more than satisfied with it.

I was thinking of fitting a current 125 ignition to my old bike at some point. It has got to make it run better. May not be legal for old bike racing, but I'm always racing it

I'm thinking of replacing the PVL on my '83 CR480.  The CR480 ignition is on the right side, where as all the CR500's are on the left.  Would this cause a conflict because of rotation?  The companies listed only offer CR500 replacements.  Could an '80's KTM 500 replacement be adapted?

Perhaps you could somehow use your stock stator and connect it to a more modern CDI

I would have to check most DC/DC ignitions (some HV) it doesn't matter which way the rotor spins, you might have to reverse the polarity of the pick up or move the rotor on the flywheel to correct the timing.

Completely legal no problems at all.

Definantly not, old stators output 'dirty'signals that modern electronics don't like

Did the 80J rotor go straight on with the original keyway placement?

Yes this can be done. I have done it on a Husky two stroke SEM stator and used a pit bike CDI and coil. Worked very well.

Did the 80J rotor go straight on with the original keyway placement?
No, the taper is different but can be machined. The backing plate needs an adaptor which is fairly easy to make.
The key way doesn't line up but then I don't use a key

A few people were interested in my ignition set up at the recent CMX Nats. I said I will provide them with the relevent info and I'll do the same on this site when I get a chance.
