What about Derek Rickmans 66 European Championship win.  Doesnt that count?  The class later has World Champsionship status

So did OSSA but we're talking motocross Joanie. Ben, the 500 class has had World Championship status since 1952 and Derek Rickman hasn't won any titles. The 1966 World 500 champ was Paul Friedrichs from East Germany on a CZ. Derek's brother Don however won the 1966 British 500GP at Farleigh Castle on a Matchless Metisse and in the same year brother Derek was a member of the victorious 1966 British Motocross de Nations team along with Dave Bickers and Vic Eastwood, so the Rickman Brothers had a good year in 1966 but no championship unfortunately.

If we are to regard the European Championship as a World Championship,  Fritz Betzelbacher won the 1957 European 250 title on a Maico. The European 250 Championship became the World 250 Championship a year later and at the time was regarded at the World Championship in everything but name. For the record, Willi Oesterle came second on another factory Maico.

Interesting quote from Mr Maico Man Roy Gay after I drop two YZ 81 H models off to him from Qld.

Why do you want these things I ask.

He says "I'm sick of getting blown off by 465 H's "

Has he seen the light?

Strange you mentioned that.....
The Yamaha 465 might be the hot ticket for flatracking and short circuit racing since that's
all that Roy has been riding lately,
while the Maicos
could be better for Natural terrain MX circuits ??

I wasnt aware of mrBetzelbachers title but IMHO that counts as a world title . The old European champs were upgraded to world status , but i reckon those european champions like Mr Betzelbacher , Dave Bickers and Andre Malherbe amoungst others and the manufacturers  are on par with the later world champs .

I actually like Maico as a brand, and the 77 AW and 79 magnum models are in my top ten favorite bikes list  :)
Its all the hype and inflated prices of the 81 490s that i will never understand  :-\ maybe im just pissed off that i took 2 running examples to the scrap yard in 1988  ;D

Yep those YZ465's are so good that Roy left them at home and rode his Maico at the TBC!

Only because they weren't going. The 465 blew up as soon as he started it. Bought sight unseen. Obviously not as described. He rang me after finding chux supa wipes in both air boxes in lieu of the air filter. Not happy Jan. Ask him he'll tell you the story.

Cos they've never ridden a 490 Maico Brad and got no idea.
Funny how at Farleigh VMXdN with the best Twinshock riders in the world no one rides a YZ465.. cos you'd get beaten to death around there on one!

Exactly. Weapon of choice the world over? Maico Mega2. Why? Because no one is getting paid to ride the jap crap any more haha.

Too late for that Tony!
That was shot by Vic Freiberg who has been putting together a documentary on vmx. He also gave me the retro motocross action jersey I am wearing.

Yes that's a great photo Brad but you know what I'm going to say.  All Maicos should be red

Bill now I understand why you are so anti Maico

Of course in 1988 no one knew how popular they would become.  I have had two 490s a GS and a MX.  I paid $2,000.00 and $2,500.00 for them.  I've still got the MXers.  It even has a reed valve barrel.
