My first thoughts were..."Oh no not another one of these class illegal Euro cut and shuts" but it didn't take much further looking to see that this bike's a fair bit better than that. Sure, you can't race it in Evo here or in the USA but that's not the market he's looking at. It's legal for British twinshock and whatever they call the class in Europe and that's all that matters. The bike has a catalogue full of quality aftermarket parts and is well presented but I'm not sure its any sort of bargain at 18kAU. It's probably a 12k bike but who knows the market these days? It might just sell at 18k but I suspect the listing is a fishing expedition.

$20 000 would pick you up a GENUINE one off, hand built, uber trick, factory bike from the '80's

$34000AU is a lot different to the 18KAU being asked for this bike but whatever you pay for a works or historically significant bike it's money invested in history. This bike, even though it was ridden by Chuck Sun at Farleigh Castle, isn't one of Chucks old works race bikes and therein lies the difference. No matter what that Honda has done in its three race history, it'll always be just a nice bike with no important history. As well, any works bike for under 35k these days would require a fair bit of expensive restoration going by what I've seen in recent times. Times might be tough but quality works racers with documented history just keep going up in price.......Will this bike?

Hold on Bill....I for one am not rubbishing the bike, I merely question whether it's a good buy at 18kAU. I actually like the bike which is a plus from me as I normally don't like bikes that mix eras like that. Looking at it from a British perspective its a cool bike.

Its not that exotic. Apart from a fibreglass airbox, alloy tank and triples it is exactly like this. Only i have used far more modern suspension internals front and rear.

Dead right Bill. When I built this 465 I spared no expense including mine and others time and parts it owes me 20 K Just as this Honda owes them. However when these guys advertise it for that amount it becomes permissible to include labour unlike when I put mine up for sale My bike was also built by a professional I didn't recon the carby, I replaced it with a new one I replaced every seal, bearing and bush with new Mine is also original bore with every component brand new My brake hubs have both been machined round I have cartridge forks with latest Ohlins components fitted Rear shock which has the same treatment I also have Venhill cables, quick throttle action, PFR pipe, muffler, pegs, alloy gear lever A year ago arguably Australia's best VMX rider had the squish changed on his head Everyone treats it as a hi tec mod I did that to this bike in 2007 The changes to this bike are too numerous to list I wouldn't sell my forks for the price some experts reckon this whole bike was worth

I know it's not EVO legal and don't care We built it to compete inPre 90 The builder wanted to prove that this 81 could easily run in that class A couple of years ago I put a young guy on it, the same kid who built my trailer, at a club round After a couple of laps he came in and declared he would easily win his own modern clubs championship on it He is now NSW state champion

I'm not always right and when I'm not I will say so.

One other thing any bike is worth what someone is willing to pay for it.  My guess is someone in the UK or Europe will pay that price for it.  I guess we will see.

My line of thinking these days is along the same lines, keep the original appearance, for the sake of history,
but build a better and safer machine by going nuts on the internals and build quality.

yourself and a couple of others on here have set a high bench mark for the rest of us to chase. Very nice.

Your YZ is a seriously nice bike Ted but why isn't it Evo legal? Just to add that nothing is really new in this game, I'll top you with the squish band mod mate ...."Professor" Peter Reynolds did two head squish remaps and plug relocation for me plus matching porting, one for my DT1, the other for my 350 Maico (after I welded them up) all the way back in 1992. Both bikes have won numerous Aussie titles in pre 70, both in the same year in, I think 1993 and at the latest in 2006. The squish mod that Brad and I are having done at RK TEK is a bit different in the machining but the result should be similar or I hope, better.

The squish thing is as old as the hills I was just trying to make the point that on bikes like mine and that Honda the value in these bikes is never seen by the guy who bags the price of such machines Get a price on putting cartridges in your forks so as to not make them distinguishable from others You will find it costs more than what some bikes are worth complete

It isn't EVO legal because it has a modern flat slide carb Also has cartridge forks Some say no cartridge in EVO Some say fork internals are free in EVO  And no I won't be donning my Erin Brokovic dress to find the answer.....

Forks are totally legal, no Erin Brokovic needed......I've got emulators in most of my bikes and can't tell from the outside. The Carby however is illegal for obvious reasons. The reason I reckon the Honda is overpriced is based on what the market's prepared to pay. You know as well as I Ted that very few punters will put out 20k for a VMX bike unless it's got a bit of historic form on the board. I know how quickly a build cost can snowball once you start involving highly paid specialists, shit I'd probably have well over 20k in my Maico development over 44 years of ownership but when it comes to crunch time it's still only worth what the market can handle.

It touches a nerve with me about these hybrids not being EVO legal , but hey your rules are your rules and its your sandpit
