Should you keep bikes you no loner use?

Last five years as much as can positively remember  ,sold 9, gave away 22+ ,had 17 that were restored totally destroyed in a shed fire. now have 6 left (3 of which are out at other residences). Add to that trailer loads of spares parts and spare parts wreckers have been sold or given away for peanuts.  Yep the reality is one day you will see the obvious that you cannot do everything.....

Do I regret losing all those ? the fire lost ones YES! the others, well sometimes. Cheers

Ahh yes that list above does not include my stupidly large 100/125cc Hodaka collection  I sold/gave to Ray Ryan.

Collectors that I know that have
1. vic 500 + bikes he never rides them, they will be sold when he dies.
2. Vic 46 Greeves all pre 65 bikes, stop the pre 65 classes to grow
3. Vic 4 pre 75, 9 pre 65
4. Vic 30m by 10m shed full, varity of models. he will never do anything with them.
5. Vic 25+ yamaha
6. Vic 15 + cz, jawa, swm, ossa

Yeah, I'm hoarding some as well.

But no-one seems genuinely interested in buying the ones I want to sell anyway.... so until someone is ready to get serious, I will keep 'em.

For me, it's a balance of cash vs space vs emotional attachment.
If the bike isn't being used, the emotional attachment quickly wanes.

This is a problem, everybody has short arms and deeeeep pockets at the moment .
I think some bikes were overvalued and local markets plundered by those importing container loads from the states.
so in the short term the bikes value has been denigrated.
 I dont want to "give away " bikes but realize a small loss will be inured in the current money market, so I guess it is a matter of riding out the time .
 of course the older everyone gets the less chance you have of selling older bikes as ride bikes and also most of us I suspect brought our bikes in a fairly buoyant market.

I agree with Nathan - the "should I sell my bike because I don't ride it" demon has started to creep in!  But then the other one is - "mmm another bike to put in the shed would be nice"

I have a couple of restored bikes and a shed load of unrestored ones that i dont ride 

A problem im facing now is that the restored ones and to a lesser extent the unrestored ones do deteriorate . I dont have a nice showroom or even a nice office to put them in so what do i do 

Add to the problem all those Gunna Gunna Gunna projects and it all becomes a pain in the arse instead of a pleasure .

Not to mention a shed load of memrobillia, riding gear, parts and accessories

Over the last 10 yrs i have lost a lot of mates my age to various horrible illnesses , if i tip over tomorrow whos gonna clean up this lot  it would be a bloody nightmare so i have to consider that too . I have always lived for today fork tomorrow but its getting to a time where i have to take a bit of responsibility 

I have my favorite riders / racers so i should just keep them and ditch the rest 

As has been said nobody wants to pay much for them now , will that change who knows
I will probably end up parting out quite a few as it seems easier to move them that way and scrap / dump what dont sell .

Yes the bulk imports have flooded the market but some of those guys are stuck with a lot they cant sell now 

As Firko said you dont want to sell somone a bike that shits itself first time out ( thats what the bulk importers are there for ) so i would rather part them out . Someone can always buy all the parts and build their own  but that way theres no missunderstandings

Yes, 500 + bikes, I didn`t pluck that out of the air, I have been in his shed and works shop, they come off the wall of the shed in threes, and they are all in a row at ground level. the total amount
would be 99% europeon. he may be passionate about bikes, its a sickness too.
