Pre '70 bargain.
« on: July 24, 2011, 01:49:16 pm »
With talk of a number or racers considering joining the pre '70 class, this cherry barn find AJS Stormer that appeared on Marks Swapmeet a couple of weeks ago would have been a ripper buy. I was in the process of buying it for a mate but he pulled out because he didn't fancy a right foot gear change bike. In the end it went to another Aussie named Greg Mitchell. Don't take too much notice of what the period magazines said about the Stormer, they're a really good thing, especially when you put them in a pre '70 context. The Starmaker engine is strong, you can still buy parts from AJS and they're as light as any late 60's bike comes. The seller Bill Orth in Colorado is a good bloke who also has a prety good (and very cheap) Greeves and a very cool Metisse A65 forsale on the swapmeet.
(Does anyone know Greg Mitchell, the buyer? Bill seems to think he may be from W.A.)

1970 AJS 250 Stormer project bike all the hard-to-find and expensive stuff is there, engine turns over with compression, but will need a full restoration. Stored in a Texas garage for many years, no rusty fork tubes, seems to have had little use--still has original rear tire and sprockets look great. Chain cams not buggered up and swingarm is snug. I have a set of new Girling shocks w/springs and correct chrome levers that go with it. $850. Email me for full-screen high-res photos.

I agree Davey, it's a bit like driving a left hand drive car when you go to the US, it doesn't take long to adapt at all. I started racing a right change Bultaco an left change Yamaha and if a doofer like me can master it, a rocket scientist like you will shit it in ;D.

Good thinking Vandy, the Stormer probably isn't as perfect a ride as a pre 70 Husky or a squarie Maico but it's not that far behind them, plus they're pretty unique and this particular one is remarkably complete and unbastardized. The below Stormer (370cc version)was also for sale on Marks a week or two ago. It gives you a look at what the finished model can look like.

Have you noticed the back suspension? The Stormer was the first long travel bike, back in '68.

I once owned two bikes, one with left and one with right change. I could jump from one to the other without even thinking.  It's only the first ride when you slam on the brakes to change gear, and change gears to brake that it gets you. After that it becomes second nature.

It's the left throttle Indians with left foot clutch and left hand gear change that will mess with your head.
