My way of dealing with a scammer

After posting last week for PE250T parts,I received an email from a guy in the UK saying he had parts for my PE and that he was Breaking a bike for sale of parts.
I casually took the email as.....cool but too far for my liking and politely replied back asking what he had.
Then i got i got another email with a photo attached of the bike he was wrecking for parts.
Here is the bike 


Now here are the photos of my bike i posted up in the Suzuki section last week. 


Ok i thought its time to play with this prick.

Hi Rupert,
Do you have the side covers and headlight as they are not on the bike in the
pic,mind you i keep mine aside incase i damage them and use aftermarket.
The engine i'll take,as your barrel fins and head fins are intact and mine
are broken.The barrel and head alone here in Oz would cost more than your
engine.
Does the engine have good compression and spark?
Is the exhaust header in good condition?They are usually banged up from
hitting rocks and so on.
The rear shocks need to be in good condition (no leaks)as the airline
companies frown upon oil leaks and class them as dangerous goods.
Just want to confirm that the above parts are ok and then i need your
details on how you want to be paid...ie mastercard,paypal,direct bank
transfer etc.

I heard a rumour that the 2010 world Enduro champ,englishman rider David Knight
may be a secret guest!
Might see if i can get him to ride my bike and compare his 2010 KTM to my
1980 PE250T...lol

Yes, I have the side covers and headlights in good condition. My

Hi Rupert,
Great! I really needed the plastics and that headlight is IMPOSSIBLE to find
and have been pulling BIG dollars on Ebay.
What other details do you need.
I've never delt with Western Union or money gram.
I'll try western first and see if that goes through for you!
I need your details so i can organise it straight away.
Find out a time frame of delivery and a tracking number if possible.

Hi Rupert,
My ISP was down last night,but will try the transfer again soon.

I forgot to mention if you have the rear brake pedal as well,mine is bent
beyond repair.
I think the pic of your bike still has one on it,if the steel rod for the
brake is straight i'll take that too.

post these emails up and making sure that he wasn't a member here.
I also sent a message to Western Union Aust and the UK HQ's letting them know of the scumbag.

Hi Rupert,
Problem was at Western Union Site as too many
over the net transfers and the server couldn't handle it.
Payment made in person.
All they asked for was senders name and amount.
Its up to you on your side to do the pick up as there might be server hassle
on your side.
Don't forget the tracking # for me .

This Rupert guy from UK is a scammer. I got a email from him too. I knew he was a scammer. Asked for a photo of the part he said he had for me. He hasnt replied yet........ You can tell they are a scammer when they copy and paste your full wanted ad into the email subject line.

Leith,i remember you mentioning the name Rupert a while ago and that clicked straight away,plus dealing with UK delivery puts me off most of the time.
But to use a pic of my own bike kinda  convinced me SCAM!!!

I've had a couple of good replies from 2 people in Perth for parts,but postage prices seem to be getting dearer everytime i go to austpost as Perth people miss out on good sales.

Michael,there are all kinds out there trying to prey on people,especially this time of year and prefer dealing with people on here.
I'm in no rush to finish the PE,just grazing around for parts,but whatever spare time i have I tinker in the shed.

Just goes to show.......I guess people can get a little blase about sending off money to far flung places expecting things to work out OK. Lucky for you (and stupidly of Rupert) that he used your own bike as bait.

I have never heard from this Rubert guy till last week. Another one to look out for Zamora Allen.

They dont all ask for western union though. The ones that tried to do me said they would take paypal. Usually the stuff im after is hard to get and rare anyway so i know when i ask to see a photo they probably wont reply. The one i got ask week was for a magura throttle which is real hard to get so i knew when i asked for a photo i would not get a reply as i knew it would be hard for him to find a photo of the correct one.

Also another clue its a scam is when they say they will 'organise their shipping company to collect the goods from you'

The biggest give away is when they copy and past in your full wanted add or the first few sentences in the subject. Thats alarm bells straight away. Also you can tell by their language and how good their english is. I know some european guys from Germany, France, italy and scandinavia etc sometimes dont have real good english but i can differentiate between those that have poor english but are legitimate and the ones doing the scams which are usally from african, middle eastern or asian countries. Maybe others cant tell but i can. Usually there are a lot more other dead give aways its a scam well before you get to the point of assessing their level of english though.

I would love to string these scamers along but i dont have time.

There is a scam the scammer work around with the 'I'll organise the shipping bit' this is from young Jeram

there are ways to beat the scammers at their own games

the reason they can claim they bike isnt delivered is because you've made a big mistake!
you've released the bike to an unregisted courier company.

in the terms and conditions of paypal it states that you must used registered, trackable postage with signature at departure and arrival.

this is the loop hole the catch you on.

the way you catch the scammers is as follows:

sell the bike to them,
collect the money
dump it straight into your bank account and take it out as cash as soon as possible.
organise for there courier to pick up the bike.
do not release the bike to the courier unless it is the company stated by the buyer, and it is a registered courier service..
they will not send an official courier, and they cannot claim for a refund because you have forfilled your duties as a responsible seller.

and If you definitely want to put a nail in there coffin, do not release the bike untill 5days after money has cleared... this means they have to go through the normal mediated paypal dispute where you can argue your case and win if they still want to dispute it.

if you do you research, it is very easy to scam the scammer...
I suggest you research it yourself though incase Iv missed any steps...
a mate on the 125ccsportsbike forums did this, he got to keep his mito and the cash!
