wow $6000 is a lot of money for a 24 year old mxer.... :o

especially when its fairly rough too Andrew.

I asked him a few questions about the piston kit (if it was OEM), the ignition (if it was OEM) and shock (if it was just rebuild only) as he  quoted these items as all new.

he didn't bother to reply!

i reckon its all a matter of timing with bikes when you list them as to what price they get. if there is no interested buyers then they may not sell at all.

Yes Hoony a lot of bucks for a bike specially if a race bike as it stands because if the pre 90 movement gets up and running it is the oldest of that class, sure with a good rider on it it would still be a front runner but it is always just the starter bike of the water bottle era.

The other side of the ledger is if you just have a real drive to own one or as in my case with the Red Devil could not afford one new and wanted one now that I could, then the sky could well be the limit?

To each his own I always say, hey Hoony old mate want to unload that 5hundy of yours? give ya 10k for it ;D ;D must be worth that if he can get that for that one hey?? As yours is riden but a TV star! but would have to be autographed :D :D

hey Shane, my 500 is not for sale at the moment or the near future even for $10k (have to type quick before Mrs Hoony reads that offer, that would buy a complete tupperware collection,  heaps of doileys, and other Sheila stuff). anyway you have lots of other toys to play with.

maybe if you work on "The Brad-ster" he will part with one of his as he has 2 (the lucky bastard  ;) )

I think you may understand my run of luck with a cr 500. I managed to find a nice 1984 CR 500 in the USA, it took 8 months to get a pink slip to leave the US. In the interim our currency went into a sharp decline relative to US dollar. Anyway the bike arrived, initially focussed on the suspension, got everything sorted. decided it was now time to start. Spark is weak and intermittent, it wil not fire up, I probably need to start from scratch and check all the connections, thereafter may need to have the coil tested. Any advice/ suggestions  welcome.

From my experience the stator seems to be the weakest link. Not to say they fail on a regular basis, just that the coil and cdi seem less likely to fail. Generally from water and gunk getting in. I would find out if the resistance readings are within spec.
The up side of having same/similar bikes, you can swap things over as i did. I took the stator out of my 85 500 and put in my 84 as it had the same issue and it fixed it.

G'day Crabman, what 090 said.

also they do have a weak spark anyway, make sure the gap on the plug is correct (from memory 0.030" i will check book) as this will also help.

in my case i had an intermittant fault with the CDI.
84' & 85' models are similar (difference part #) 86' on have different mounting (not sure if functionally the same, but i suspect not, as stator is also different) i had a spare i bought of ebay (seller said it came from running bike, but it was also stuffed, this caused me lots of grief as i assumed they both could not be faulty).

i was very seriously looking at a PVL for mine, but the cost was the issue at the time and another ebay item popped up for around US$100 and the exchange was good at the time. i had already spent way too much by this stage and i could not justify the extra.

good luck and report your findings here.
