I've been flicking between your original page 1 photo and the finished project.
Excellent work Hoony, well done! 8)

Good job Hoony. I'm going to start looking for a CR500 for myself later in the year.

Nice one Hooney,

Looks Tops,

I've been away for a while guys and missed all the posting. I wouldn't back stepping a bit
On the magnesium water pump housing decay thing, I always thought it was more erosion from the force of the water/coolant  circulating rather than a chemical corosion thing.

Also Hooney (and others) did you dissasemble the tranny shafts completely to inspect or can you inspect them assembled.
About to tear into my 93 CR500 for a total rebuild. I will need help I am sure so will probably start a thread on it too.. Where can I buy an aftermarket Flywheel puller? Honda want my left nut for one of theirs. :o

Later guys

Might be a bit early to fit in with your plans Firko but this looks like a decent bike maybe worthy of a bid.

Thanks for the kind words guys, appreciated.

That's a very clean bike you spotted there Quicky. had that been available 2 years ago i would have bought that one.

early CR500's that clean don't come up that often.

Firko, what model are you tending towards the Aircooled 1984 CR500RE ?

Utsman, i did check my tranny apart and found a 1 shim washer the wrong size and one missing.
i checked the shift forks for wear as well as the selector drum. i had ridden the bike numeruos times so i knew it shifted well.

Honda gearboxes from this era (1984 up) are very strong.  i have had a the same CR250 since 1987 and its done a lot of work (MX, dirt track, desert races and lots of 2 day trail rides with a big tank some years back) i have rebuilt bottom end probably 5+ times never had to replace any gearbox items other than bearings.

Hi Andrew,

i reckon that CR on ebay will go for around $3600. being a pre 90 bike it will not be in demand as much as say a 1984 model. i know of one (84 model) that went for $4k last year it was not  showroom floor immaculant, but a very clean, spend no money ready to Race bike (that's how i like them).

yours will end up just as nice too, i have no doubt.
