Nothing like a 'thorough' rebuild hey hoony.  You start on one thing, an notice another and another and on it goes.

yep , thats the way its been mate. i also should have been a bit more organised and went over everything in one hit rather than wait for parts then check next item etc, as everytime i check something it needs work, but then again i am also a fussy prick.

Hooney,
Rebuilds on pre'85/90 bikes are a nightmare too many wearing bits. I've done my first and last one.
If i get the inclination to buy another one, it'll be a low hours/highly maintained expensive one, cheap "Project" ones are a bottomless pit.
On a positive note at least it doesn't have a power valve........that'd be flogged for sure.
It'll all be worth it when you get it onto some green rolling hills with long straights and wide sweeping turns, with soil like plasticine.

I will be doing a resto on a 85 500 at some stage. But its down the list a bit as it will be a NOS type of do up just to look at as a reminder of my youth ( before i get to old to remember! ). A friend found a second one for sale a couple of months ago on the side of the road,i couldn't give him the money quick enough! Those deals when you cant give the guy the money quick enough, i love those deals as it usually means a good deal! I have a heap of NOS sorted already, all the hard stuff. I beat you to the last set of shrouds too Hoony! Sitting in the dead stock list on the north QLD coast,do you hate me now (rub, rub)

Evo, you got it in one mate, (what did you restore ?) and i agree about the power valves too as i restored an 86' 250 and that took some time. lots of time just going over the linkage rear ends, cleaning, greasing etc. Yes i do enjoy riding the 500 on the tracks that are fast and sweeping, but to be quite honest i reckon my lap times are probably much faster on a 250 than a 500, but to me i don't care as the 500 has the adrenaline factor and i no longer chase trophies, i just want to ride these days.

Brad, yep i have been chasing that elusive RHS Radiator shroud for over 18mths now, i managed to get a LHS but missed out from CMNSL by who else but Magoo would you believe. now Brad what if i Name my next child due in April after you, can i get that shroud  ;D

i thought i had one coming ex USA but it was listed as ex stock incorrectly. my best hope is if one of our US forum members can do a NOS search at a dealer for me.

The waterpump housing looks in good shape. How do you keep on top of it?

actually it was this good when i got it, where everything else was stuffed. it did have a leak wednesday before CD4 and that sent me into panic mode but a devcon number fixed that.

i have only had to repair my Cr's 3-4 times in 20+ years. the worst was when i had a motor on the bench for a whole year and then some before i pulled it down, it was very badly corroded. i reckon if you don't flush the case out and the air gets to itthey will corrode fast and badly. i don't bother to drain mine when not in use and have not had too many drama's luckily.

I have been told to drain it by some, and to keep putting fresh coolant in every 6 months by others as it goes off. Which box would you tick Hoony and others?
