Wanted / RT1 Frame needed.
« on: January 16, 2012, 10:08:49 PM »
About a year ago I did some dealing with Nathan S and ended up with his RT1 project. He did some cuts to the frame which could be dealt with but a dfferent original frame would make life easier.
The bottom end is RT2 and I'm not sure if there are any differences between RT1 & 2 or 3 frames. For that matter, I'm not sure if DT1 frames are the same and would be usable??? I need just bear frame and a bit of advise.

Prefered Sydney area if possible.

Wanted / Re: wanted yz 465g gear
« on: January 10, 2012, 10:09:53 PM »
Hi Greg

NW Cycle Parts in USA have 1 but try Yamaha Australia first. I'm always suprised what they still have available. If the local dealers around Can-a-win-dra can't get it then the bloke at Bike Biz in Parramatta is happy to get and mail to you for about $10 postage.

Part Number  - 3R5-17131-02-00
(Australian Part Number is 3R5-17131-02 , for some reason the yanks stick 00 on the end of everything!)

Description - Gear, 3rd Pinion, (19T), Price - $80.97

Yamaha / Re: YZ400E

Mitch is right.

The E is not that competitive with bike like the H model. Apart from the minor variations between the D and E, the backwards move puts it at the end of the age group in pre 78.

My bike started as just a bare frame, no numbers stamped on it at all and no swing arm. I actually had a 250E parts bike so most of the critical gear went on to the frame. Got a swing arm from the states and a D and E motors evilbay, both in parts.

I suspect the frame had no number (and no sign of numbers) because I remember back in 1977 a friend had his 400 for about 6 weeks and the frame cracked. Yamaha replaced it at almost no cost. My frame also has a lot of welding all over it so it must be a general problem. I did notice that the engine cradel bracket bolts and all engine bolts need constant checking which would contribute to frame issues. So the truth is I can't tell if its a D or E frame.

It's a lot of fun to ride after racing mainly 125's for the past 3 years and I love the bottom end but miss the top end.

It won't be like a 465 / 490 in power, I have just got an IT490 myself and the power and top end it has is a completely different feel to the earlier 400.

Enjoy!

What you have got for yourself an old style big bore.
Sort out the jetting, timing and most importantly the gearing.
They just love to pull from down low and not like hugh revs.
The reeds and porting aren't set up for top end transfer so learn to live with it. You won't regret it.
One other trick is to find a "D" swing arm and it's super competitive in the pre 78 class. The only obvious changes between D and E was the swing arm.

Good luck with it.

Wanted / Re: 1977 yamaha yz400 d airbox
« on: June 29, 2011, 04:02:19 PM »
Worms

The 250/400 D and 400E airbox are all the same. The 250E and the F models have the larger out let on the box. Not sure if a 250E air box will fit D models because of the aluminum spine brace in the D frame, the 250E does not have this (the hole through the middle is the small size only on the D's). The air box is thicker in width and the air filter is wider on the 250E by about 2cm. I don't believe there is that big an advantage by using the later air box.

If your after supersonic speed than look for a pipe and bigger gonads.

Yamaha / Re: oil seals
« on: June 26, 2011, 08:17:59 PM »
Hi Iain
Firstly, why are you changing the seal. If it's leaking then the seal is the secondary problem, the main bearing could well be the problem. (or in some cases the main bearing case steel insert.)

To answer your question, yes you can and with a little difficulty. You need to drive a sharpish small flat bladed screw driver in about 1 to 1.5mm from the outter edge of the seal. Then basicly leaver the old seal out. Take your time and its possible. The seal may actually move in a bit before the blade penetrates but don't be concerned about that. Just make sure that you don't go in to hard and damage the bearing.

As a little hint when putting the new seal back in, put a little grease on the inner lip of the seal and the crank to not burn the seal when you start it. And to help the seal over every thing.

General Discussion / Re: Back in the Day
« on: June 06, 2011, 01:00:39 PM »
Hi All
He is a little shifty. Order and paid for a rear spring and bits in August last year, had no reply by October. Followed up in November and he indicated that he sent it. Promised to re-send AT HIS COST and have it tracked at his expense. Received at the end of February and post dated 7th Feb 2011.

Happy with the parts but not so happy with service. Would only order if really had too.

Wanted / Re: YZ400 D frame
« on: May 03, 2011, 10:01:50 PM »
Hi Moto

I have the YZ400E frame with the D steel swing arm.

It's nearly ready for competition. According to the Yamaha parts list the only difference between D and the E 400's is the clutch and the arm. In this case I'd argue that the frame numbers doesn't matter as it has all the other relevant parts that make it a D.

If your not particular, the YZ250D and the YZ400E are the same frame just different numbers.

Wanted / Re: Boyesen, Rad or Standard Reed petals for YZ400D
« on: April 30, 2011, 10:45:43 PM »
Hi Viper

I looked last night and they all wanted $30+ for postage. I have ordered this set, Thanks.

I'm just interested in firing this YZ up and trying to sort out some of the little things to make sure she's a goer before the Crawford River Classic in May. Last time I build a bike from nothing but a bare slighty stuffed frame and a box of E-Bay engine bits. Most of it will need to be there before I spend a cent!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'll move on to the other project to fill in the time, an RT1 from Nathan S to see if she'll run before the CRC.

Thanks again.

Wanted / Boyesen, Rad or Standard Reed petals for YZ400D
« on: April 30, 2011, 12:43:00 AM »
Hi All

Desperately looking for a set of Reed petals for a YZ400D/E. The box of bits that I bought that now resembles a motor is missing the reeds because someone has broken or removed them.

It appears that stock ones from any of the models below will fit.

Or Boyesen part number is #606 (fits YZ / MX / DT 360 and YZ400 up to 1978).

Thanks in advance.
