With a blow piston before you might check ignition timing also. Crank seals as well.

You may need to borrow someone else's right leg!

Now I feel like a goose. I was sure that the 250D and E  where both 5 speeds but now I just checked my old parts book the E is a 6 speed. Everything else is the same including the cases. Now that is a strange one.

Nothing will ever surprise me again.

When it comes to IT250 D & E models they where identical. 5 speed for both and generally all the same apart from engine and chassis numbers.
To club race it, it would certainly eligable to ride and I'd challenge any one to pick the difference (apart from stickers???).

The YZ250D and the YZ250E are two completely different engines in two mildly different frame. The IT's and YZ"D" share the same cases and barrell. The YZ250"E" engine is nothing like the "D".

Ride in the pre 78 club races and enjoy! When you start passing other riders you'll enjoy it more.......

Yamaha / Re: You finally got to me Firko :-)
« on: July 29, 2012, 10:40:03 PM »
I've got lots of projects waiting but all this talk has pushed me to get my RT1 ready for next Septembers CD. This one started life as one of Nathan S's projects nearly 3 years ago. It's a racer so looks aren't priority but we'll have it looking pretty reasonable.

Tank still to get painted black with yellow strip. Waiting for rod kit to re-assemble the motor. MX360 gear set to go in. New rear shocks.

I have to thank Firko for an old frame he gave me which I ratted bits like the rear frame hoop which had been removed for some reason.

Yamaha / Looking for a Classic Yamaha Jersy
« on: June 29, 2012, 04:35:42 PM »
Hi All

Looking for assistance to track down an old style riding shirt (or similar). Already contacted Vintage Iron but nil stock. Anywhere in Oz that may have one XL or XXL size? Yellow or White and prefer new.

Any assistance appreciated.

I have always wandered if any of the MX360 gears fit. I picked up a complete gear set recently and wanted to compare. Like Vandy I'd be looking at a couple of gears only if the whole set does not fit (and work).

I scored a Nathan S project RT1 bike is a swap a couple of years ago and would really like to have it going for the CRC in July. I guess we'll see in the next few weeks if the gears swap over (and I have the time).

All I can say is install www.mozilla.org/ Fire Fox and use it as your browser.

Not an expert but does not allow pop ups etc.

Tech Talk / Re: The Perfect Clutch
« on: May 08, 2012, 04:24:27 PM »
Mick

I can't see the ball bearing in your diagram that makes things smooth. I had heaps of trouble with a clutch years ago on an IT175 after a rebuild. Poor adjustment, grabbed, slipped and had a totally shit day racing. Got home and found the ball bearing in the bottom of the wash tub. Should the push rod (14) and the diaphram push rod (9) have a bearing in there or is the end of the push rod rounded like a bearing?

Whole thing worked perfectly when bearing was put back in..

KTM / Re: Classic Dirt

Bill

What you should do is park the KTM next to the Huskys and put a begging bowl in front of your bike. They'll all feel sorry for the KTM and give money (or beer).

Actually, what you should do is park the KTM (with Husky stickers on it ) next to my old AT1. Last year they left yamaha spare parts next to it when it was lined up with your KTM's. Maybe this year they might leave KTM parts???

Shoey gets picky about "Other" bikes parked in "The Husky Area"....................

Yamaha / Re: How Much Fork Oil for YZ400D?
« on: April 19, 2012, 09:15:54 PM »
Simo

I'm away in Victoria at the moment  and don't have access to some notes so I can't remember exactly but what ever the manual say plus 50mm for oil height to the top of the tubes. Springs out and forks collapsed of course. Best results I've had is with 20W oil. All this is on standard forks.

With other stuff like Walter said he will need more info.

There are a couple of sites in the states. Do a bit of googleing or pick up the phone to Walter.

Yamaha / Re: How to make a DT 125 go fast and handle good
« on: March 17, 2012, 11:13:04 PM »
If it's pre-mono shock going back to the AT1 then there are heaps of bits out there.

AT1 through to AT3 and DT125/175's ran a wide ratio box. The AT2MX (and the MX125 A & B) ran the same full close ratio box and can be had from http://www.nwvintagecycleparts.com/

1    265-17121-01-00    Gear, 4th Pinion, (16 Tooth)(Now #315-17121-0    $10.00
2    265-17141-00-00    Gear, 4th Pinion, (22 Tooth), (AT1MX,LT2M,LTM        $10.00
3    265-17151-00-00    Gear, 5th Pinion (23 Tooth), (AT1MX,LT2M,LTMX    $10.00
4    265-17211-00-00    Gear, 1st Wheel, (34 Tooth), (AT1MX,LT2M,LTMX    $25.35
5    265-17241-00-00    Gear, 4th Wheel, (24 Tooth), (AT1MX,LT2M,LTMX    $10.00
6    265-17251-00-00    Gear, 5th Wheel, (22 Tooth), (AT1MX,LT2M,LTMX    $10.00
7    265-17411-01-00    Axle, Main, (12 Tooth Drive Gear), (AT1MX,AT1       $15.00

Third gear is common through the lot.

Ignition is simple, as Nathan said, run a YZ 125 X,D,E plate and rotor. Will need some work to mount on the backing plate but the rest is simple. While your at it, take out the 5 old thick plates and replace with YZ125 C,X  6 metal and fibre plates. Works a treat.

Carb and porting are open but 32mm carb is the ticket. A better reed block with a bigger opening is the go to but can't remember which bike it's from. Bring the head clearance down to. It really makes then crack. Pipe as well.

Get a fork brace and the 250/360 forks. (and find a 21" front wheel with the small hub to save weight).
13" rear shocks to find the front end again. (Not the 12") If your super keen add an 1" or 1.5" to the swing arm.

All this stuff is done to my AT1 which I race at Heaven.

Finally, and this is the most important part, don't start this project until the rider has lost weight and is no heavier than 65kg's.

I know from experience that 100kg's is a big handicap.

They are great fun. They are cheap and there are bucket loads of bits every where.

If it's and early mono shock, YZ125D or E gear set goes straight in (same cases), bigger carb, porting, head, YZ ignition goes straight in. Finding the bits will be a little harder as gear boxes are almost rocking horse stuff! Ignitions are too......

This model hot up is possibly the quickest and easiest.

Either way, an hour at a wrecker or two hours at Nathans and you'll have more than enough stuff to start a fun new life throwing around a little old DT!
