Title: Best RM MODEL??
Post by: SUZUKI311 on September 16, 2009, 03:48:55 pm
Yamaha forum asked which YZ was best(as if there was ever a good one...), so what do we think was Suzuki's finest RM/TM? RM125s? RM125 N/T/X?? RM370?? TM400Cyclone... Let us know what you think. And pics of any you may have.

tm i know it was a monster and caused a lot of injuries but that is what i like in a bike and tm400 any year really rates high on my list and then being a big bore freak rm500 got to be up there as the best rm for me although i will be trying to put together an rm400 soon thanks Michael. :)

The best from my personal experience, (I've owned and raced RM125A&B, RM125T, RM125Z, RM500D) would have to be the 1982 RM250Z.
Hands down the best 250 of it's year bog stock and out of the crate...No-one from my racing area could beat them except one visiting international rider on a prepped YZ250J and the next 7 places were RM250Z's

No suzuki guru here but for its time I would say the RM125 B smoke everything else that was available at the time.
Also the 81 RM125 - US National privateer Doug Dubar refused to upgrade to the next model for 3 years . I think he finally got a ride so had to give it up. 3 years was along time backthen. :)

Suzuki built so many good bikes that dominated their class it is hard to answer with just one bike.

2010 RMZ450..... it is all about the motor, god knows what they have done to the 2009 but fastest bike out there 2 strokes included.

honorable mentions

RM500D ..... motor feels more like big 250 which has got to be a good thing.
RM250Z ..... like Cyclegod said.
RM125X ..... had one new, technically pissed all over everything in every class but tended to blow up, Z was better
RM370B ..... best 2 strokes are medium size ones.

Yup the '82 RM 250. I don't know how well they went but they're one of the toughest lookin' bikes out.  :P

Ill vote for the RMAs and RMBs, all 3 models from both years where weapons and could beat anything out their. They might not have been perfect but as a package were the goods. I think these bikes made the other manufacturers lift their games. They where as hot to look at as Daisy Duke and rode just as well :P :P :-* ;)

My personal favorite was my RM250Z, ditto for the above comments, honorable mention to my RM125X, had an awsome motor. At the moment i have a RM250X which i bought from the original owner, and i have to say its great fun to ride. IMO Suzuki had a strangle hold from 1976 to 1983, not detracting from the many other great bikes of that time, but they couldnt seem to do anything majorly wrong in that period.

For me the RM125B was one of the best bikes i ever owned and the best 125 of '77. The RM125X was also miles ahead of the pack in it's day.

The A & B were hot, the C series was (for me) the coolest of them all. The mono-shock bikes are ABSOLUTELY PLUG UGLY.

Yup the '82 RM 250. I don't know how well they went but they're one of the toughest lookin' bikes out.  :P

The 82 250 & 465 were "GEMS" I had both they were real good bikes best rear suspension at the time,

I had a 1980 CR250 with a Mugen motor in 81 - went to an RM250Z in 82 and could not believe how quick it was.  I didn't think the full floater was as good as everyone reckoned but boy what a bike.

Yeah i remember the rear suspension being so good on my '81 125 & 250, by far the best i'd ever ridden.

I have good memories of my 125A - was a sweet little bike. And I admit to a soft spot for the RM250T- a good all-rounder and reliable.
I am getting some time up on my 250B and really like it. The motor is a beauty.
The RH 250, although a limited release, would have been a revelation back in 1974. I have been fortunate to ride one a bit in the last couple of years and it always leaves me feeling vindicated about my Suzuki fetish.

Even though I've never ridden one, the RM250Z/D from '82 and '83 get my vote as the nicest looking of all the 'pre'90 RM's ;)

true - I heard the hot mod for the 83 model RM250D was to put the head off an 82 Z back on it!!

mmm..I thought they lost the plot a little with the squarish styling of the '84 250E and later but eh, doesn't detract from performance just not as nice to look at ;)

Have owned and or ridden a few mightly Suzukis:

RM250E 84
RM250Z 82
RM465Z 82
RM125D 83

Without doubt the RM250Z was the best. The only two holeshots of my miserable racing expertise were on that beast and my first ever MX trophy (at the age of 37).

Was the  250 'Z' engine much better than the air cooled 'X'?

I raced a 250 'X' for a couple of races and really liked it but I heard the 'Z' was faster.

Yes Tony the Z was heaps faster than the X. The X seemed mellow in comparison.

I have had a few Suzuki's in the past and recon they are one of the better manufactures. My RM125N & PE175 were great bikes but the best was my RM250F. All of these bikes were reliable/ dependable, better handling bikes in their day. Bought my wife a DRZ250 because of my previous bikes & the DRZ’s reputation.  :) my 2 cents

No wonder I liked it then................ being slow and all........................  :-\

The 83 RM250D fitted with an 82 RM250 head and DG pipe does it for me ;D, it gets its performance back to up 82 RM standard with the bonus of better gearbox ratio's and suspension (longer s/arm, improved shock and larger forks), Suzuki mellowed out the RM in 83 with a different head design ???
Title: Re: Best RM MODEL??
Post by: clutchslip on September 17, 2009, 08:26:08 am

The 125X and 250Z were indeed seminal bikes. Both models stood on the shoulders of the giants of the RM series that had gone before. In Suzuki's typically conservative style they used ideas that had been first developed elsewhere (watercooling and mono/linkage rears), but put it into a package that was so trick it simultaneously reduced the 'hop-up' accessory market to suppliers of nothing more relevant than 'single-sided airfilters' and established the fundamental layout of the (two-stroke) mxer as it is raced to this day. Except for one exception, of course, USD forks. Karmic justice in a way then that the aftermarket guys forced the final evolution on a grudging Suzuki in the form of the Simons UDX60s before the end of the 250Zs model year. For me though, there's a little more irony, in that as class structures stand, these bikes are unlikely to be 'remembered' by race-grids in the modern age. As long as those structures penalise ground-breaking bikes by effectively making them the oldest bikes (and therefore 'least developed' bikes) in their age bracket, so we'll probably see less of them raced than their technical achievements really deserve. I know its not necessarily that simple, because some of the looming 'seas of red' of 82/83/84/85 CR Hondas are potentially at risk from magnesium case-cancer. Whatever happens competition-wise, if you've got a nice low-hour unrestored 125x or 250Z I'd be hanging on to it.......and the RM370b of course.

Heres my 20 cents
1981 RM 125X (owned one now resides with a famous Taupo Vmxer) great engine simply the best RM 125 ever in my opinion
1982 RM 250Z owned one, a  great bike and it got my evil twin his first trophy.
1984 RM 500E dont have one but I am building a 465Z engined 500D framed beast and cant wait to ride it.
1984 RM 125E peaky engine but looked trick and great suspension (still have it)

Also currently rebuilding a 1983 RM 250D with the Z head and twinair box and 85 disc front end (we are pre 86 over here).

I just sold a RM 250Z that I spent a bit of time and money restoring, yes it was a great bike to ride, the power and handling was second to none but at a grass roots level it was a lightly engineered bike that was typical of everything else on offer in the early eighties. A stand out bike for me was a RM 400N, at least you could say that Suzuki put thier nads on the line and went all or nothing to break the mould - anyway thats from my humble perspective.

gotta be the 81 125x as this was before the 250z and therfore more ground breaking.
Once suzuki had the 125 success it must have confirmed the way to take the 250z.
I personally feel that the 125x wiped out the competition more than the 250z did.

In my time racing (80's), the 125x seemed to be the bike to have, I think for its handling more than anything else. I had a 250Z and rate it as the worst bike i owned. I bought it a season old so maybe it was too flogged. It seemed to disintegrate under me. The motor was strong for sure. I couldn't afford two new bikes for the season. Seems that Suzuki had their shit together in '77.

I have a 125 S ,125 B x 3  ,250 B, 250 d, have had 125 T and 250 T  and a 88 250(best pre 90 by far).My favorite to ride is the 125S they just handle and rev etc etc sounds like you are riding fast even if you ain't. ;D . The 250 D has the grunt and plush suspension and would be my choice if it was very rough or had to ride all day  ie hare scramble.

Any Full Floater RM is a great bike. My personal favorite is the RM250Z. BTW, the head alone wasn't what made the '82 engine so great. It also had a lighter crankshaft than the '83 and '84.

My favourites are the first years of RMs (RMs,RMa,RMb) these bikes were very trick in their day-last years works bikes! they looked like the bikes    Roger,Gaston and Tony D(not to mention gunter and worrell and plenty not mentioned) rode, alloy tanks/laydown shocks/upswept pipes, they looked and went unreal,to me suzukis finest hour ;)
