Title: Purple Dave's SC 500 Project
Post by: Purple Dave on February 03, 2013, 04:51:43 pm
Well a lot has happened since I discovered this site in December.........I would first like to thank Freakshow for offering the makings of an engine......and SlideRulz and cyclegod for pointing out a near complete machine.....I would like to make very clear up front, I am a complete novice when it comes to machine restoration, so I will need all the help I can get to make this bike competitive.....I was always a RIDER not a MECHANIC.....that having been said, let's start work.  ???

The bike arrived yesterday ..........Yippee !!!

Purple Dave, welcome to the wonderful world of old bike restoration.  We've all been there, and many will share useful tips and tricks that will save you a lot of bother, while others will know a lot about the SC500 and/or where to get parts.  You should start by doing a search on SC500 on the site.  A good thread to start with is

http://ozvmx.com/community/index.php?topic=26902.0

A mate had one of these critters back in the day.  I was too young to know good from bad, just mightily impressed with the sound, the nice yellow/black colours, and the go fast bit of course.  it was way fast for a 15 yr old - scared the heck outta me.

Purple Dave are you going to keep it a 4 speed or go for the 5 speed box ? the great thing about the 73/74 Yamahas is the interchange between models . If I can be of any help give me a call . Iain

Dave before you start on the ignition the SC can be made to work with its standard set BUT a DT400 cdi is a lot better solution and a shit load cheaper . the side covers are available from Prixhistoric F/glass .Air filters from UNI filter NSW .Topdog or speed&sport in the US http://216.168.60.165/speedandsportinc/index.tpl gear and Kick are DT 250,360 ,400 parts easy to get .carb to air box speed &sport again they make repo's , the rest your local Yamaha dealer as they are all general parts shared between lots of other Yamahas .  Give me a Pm and I'll send you a parts # list . After reading this post I went and bought one of those jaycar kits, out of curiosity just to see if it worked. For $21 I figured be worth a try. Pretty straight forward to build, took a couple of hours of fumbling around.
So off to the shed after work today and wired it to the IT. Had the plug out and got a decent looking spark, so put the plug back in and after a few kicks it fired up. Have yet to have a ride to see what happens as the kit doesn't have any advance/retard control, but nevertheless I'm impressed that it actually worked.

I was at that very same Blues Festival Purple Dave.....a bit quiet this year but still great. Mississippi Shakedowns gig in the Hibernian Pub on Friday night was my highlight, Jeff Lang at the Workers Club on Saturday night the lowlight.

Small world Firko.........highlight for me was Blue Eyes Cry at our hotel, The Astor, plus Cisco Caesar and Doc White......I've given up going to the Workers......always disappointing.....bands, in general this year were very good....we missed last year.

Blue Eyes Cry, we saw them playing in the bandstand in the park on Saturday morning, pretty good young band, great little singer. Dreamboogie opened for Jeff Lang at the Workers and quite frankly wrecked it for him, they were so good.   http://www.dreamboogie.com/about.html (http://www.dreamboogie.com/about.html).(http://i1112.photobucket.com/albums/k495/firko2/dream-boogie-250px_zps3ec15bcb.jpg)
The lead singer is a dead set hotty who steals the stage with her big personality, big blues voice and amazing looks.Yeah I think we've done our dash at the Workers too, the Backsliders were brilliant there a couple of years ago but it's a big, soulless room. I'd much rather be upstairs at the Astor. We saw a great little jazz trio called the Dubious Band in the front bar of the Empire on Saturday arvo too, they played a lot of Frank Zappa/Miles Davis influenced stuff playing for tips and a few free beers, basically indoor busking. We pooled in and tipped 'em $50 and bought them a round of Fat Yaks and I thought they'd cry. I think the Windsor Blues Festival has caught and passed Goulburn as far as quality and atmosphere but we'll still go to both.

Just check you don't have a stepped core on the trigger coil and run a timing light to confirm what the timing is doing.

Trigger core doesn't have any noticeable step. BTW There are 2 source coils, the Jaycar unit is only connected to the larger one. I'm not even sure what the smaller coil on top of the larger one actually does, maybe something to do with advancing the timing?
Hopefully will give it a run over the weekend.

Timing light will tell what it's doing, Wouldn't be trusting that JayCar box to do what it should, the Silcone Chip instructions show its looking to increase advance with rpm increase. Rex's stuff looks like a much safer option.

Took the IT for a few laps around the block, ran mostly as it should except missed slightly at higher revs (might have still been warming up/ clearing out/old fuel tho'). Will have to get hold of a timing light to see if the timing changes with the revs.
The Silicon Chip article does say no RPM advance? but to trained electronics nuts the actual circuit might tell a different story.

As an aside, the biggest problem for me, and I'm sure many others, is nowhere to go for a decent test run. With Menai (NSW) only a stones throw away, it was just too easy, but since we gave away (or gave back?) that land to the Aborigines to build a mega housing estate, and the Feds patrolling ANSTO land, looks like a trip to Appin Or Kembla are the only close legal options.

I would recomend the rex's speed shop cdi's they are good quality and look almost like the original.
I got the pulserless cdi for my dt360a.

This could be a alternative to the jaycar cdi.

Ouch, not too pretty in there ::). I love PVL ignition and have it on three or four bikes but reckon you'd have been happier with a heavier flywheel ignition on the 500. I'm using DT400 CDI with a Rex's Speed Shop black box on my 360 which will be used for dirt track. Time will tell and at least your bike will start easier ;).

Water blasting those parts would probably work ok.

I did a cylinder and head and it came up real nice.

I got it done at cambells classic bikes.

They don't recommend it on steel because it will rust straight away but if you asked them to blast then oil them they would come up great.

No real damage also.

While its in bits, dont forget to get the case transfer ports matched to the barrel and clean up all the casting dags and match to the base gasket. You need as much power as possible from those SC's they were way underpowered......... ::)

While you have it in bits Dave are you going to go with the 360 MX gear cluster and dump the balancer for a 5 speed box ?
Title: Re: Purple Dave's SC 500 Project
Post by: firko on March 24, 2013, 10:16:37 pm
The DT 360 wide ratio gear cluster works well in an SC500,especially seeing you're only using yours for DT. That's what I had in mine and I found that the big grunt easily pulled the wider 5 speed ratios .

Leaving it as a four speeder..........If I dump the balancer, will there be any detrimental effect on the engine ? When I pulled it down the balancer was still there, but the chain was gone. ??? ???
I've ordered all the parts I need for the rebuild, but I will need to get another balancer chain if you blokes think it is necessary.

Title: Re: Purple Dave's SC 500 Project
Post by: OverTheHill on April 02, 2013, 11:14:47 pm
My advise on the balancer is to "leave it operational". Disconnected the chain on one i borrowed when new in "74 cos "we wanted max power & less flywheel effect" [wrong] bloody soon hooked it back up [before the boss found out or went to ride his bike & would've found out straight away!!] vibrated annoyingly & did notice the less flywheel effect too but turned a nice motor into a horrible one. Damn short stroke too for a 500 [70mm] which might be why they revved pretty hard & came on hard at about 1/3 throttle, don't lean it off much from std or she'll seize for sure, especially if you lean off the slide needle to much, it'll seize when you roll it back from a full song run. Left ours stock std & no problems but numerous guys tried different needle & jet combo's & i suppose smaller main jets & everyone suffered seizing. Were trying to no doubt overcome the needle rich blubberyess but [i think] when you're racing your either on full song or shut off [sort of] but not cruising on the needle as such so isn't noticeable like when you're cruising up the paddock. Anyway--long winded way of saying -- be careful. Cheers. ps, all the above stories are umm, hell, close to 40 years ago [is that right-add it again] Now, if i can only fit a 90mm piston in my RT2 without the fins falling off!! [same 70mm stroke].

Received a second oversized piston from USA yesterday, and today, have sent barrel and piston to Serco in Qld for reboring. I'm expecting new conrod and roller bearings to arrive from Speed and Sport next week, so rebuild should be happening after Mrs Purple and I return from the Triumph RAT Rally in Jindabyne at the end of the month........we took the Grump for a spin on Sunday. 8)

SC500 cylinder on ebay, auction [or buy now] 230980144565, about 60 odd other sc related bits in his other listings too although some might be mx250. Saw wellington [thinking nz] but is 'wellington ohio' by memory. Cylinder is probably the last thing you'll need now anyway, plus it doesn't say what oversize its on. Hope you get an original airhose so you can use original airbox set up, don't recall any issues with them in that respect except if the base is riveted into the airbox housing it might pay to seal that part really good into the box as had problems with all the early yz's getting dust bypassing the filter. Also , [in my opinion], don't be tempted to lean it off 'too much' to try & get it to carburate clean like a trail bike as they were prone to seizing if leaned off in the midrange. Might pay to carefully eyeball the slide needle jet [emultion tube] where the needle slides as tend to get egg shape worn over time & then run super rich midrange or load up on the start line so you end up sitting there constantly revving it to clear it's throat, [then of of course the flag drops as you close the throttle!!]. Don't be tempted to leave the ballancer out [if you have it], just makes it horrible [did that for a bit, then put the chain back on]. Anyway, enough bullshit, 'hope she all goes well'.

Im a little worried your using the wrong PVL..... if that the NR1056 or NR1058 your going to have starting issues unless you can get a clean rotation and it wont have the ooompphs.. It should be the 5000 series which is the cloth taped one.

Which NR are you using ?
Title: Re: Purple Dave's SC 500 Project
Post by: OverTheHill on July 10, 2013, 08:05:30 pm
I hadn't seen the ignition but [not meaning to sound critical--more concerned for your 'leg'] in my opinion you need a 'heavy flywheel'. Need one as heavy [or heavier than original] to somehow hang off the rotor but if there's no room then fix the original or get a flywheel & stator of say a DT400--seriously. Said it before somewhere when in the 60's light flywheels, high com, & alcohol fuel was a must--to the point that [my bike] was bloody un-rideable [even if it was a B33 & i was a weed], went back to standard flywheels & went faster [more slowly--ummm, something like that] Hope the SC all goes well in the end. Remember putting lights on the bosses one to sell it as a trail bike--pretty crazy trail bike it was--as just sat in the corner not selling when the next model came out.

Hi Kerry
As I have previously stated on this thread.........The ELECTRICS and correct FLYWHEEL is my biggest headache with this project, as I am a complete NOVICE in this area.......having opted for PVL, I will see how it performs.....if it's a problem, I will return to the external flywheel ignition before the Aussie Title at Temora.
In answer to your question.......it is the 5000 series.... :P

Dave are they your original leathers?  8)

i tried to put my old speedway leathers on to take the piss out of some workmates for a go kart day and got the zip stuck around my chest area. Mrs Hoony was out with the 2 little Hoon Shelia's and i had no help at hand.

the bloody thing was stuck tight and under pressure as  i had to suck my guts in to get it that far. i panicked when i had trouble breathing and started to hyper ventilate, luckily i managed to get it loose, i really shit myself that day vowing never to attempt to put them on again.  ::)

When I first started this Project in 2013, I thought I would have everything sorted before the Australian Classic Title at Temora.........WRONG !!...............Late in the day at Nepean last Sunday, with some very positive input from JAP 454 ( Fossil ) and Sorelegs 11 ( Darren ) I think we have FINALLY solved the last problem, which has plagued the performance of THE BEAST for over 12 months............Poor fuel Flow..........So thanks to everyone who has helped me get to this stage, in particular Matcho Mick.....The bike's next outing is Nepean again on 31 August, then the Big One, the Australian Classic Dirt Track Title 2014 at Canberra 27 and 28 September. Now it's up to the pilot......... ;D ;)

The top of Canberra pits was reserved for Sliders at one of the OZ DT Nats, with a push start laneway marked out, I will suggest to the club that the same thing should be done this year, including hard to start machines this year ;D

Talking 'bout hard to start, :o I have started a stripp-down on my XT motor. The thing actually fires up easily except for serious clutch drag when its cold, so that's No 1 , new valve springs No2, new conrod? No3, Oh yes and a breather hose with a bit more heat resistance! This will all take a while, meanwhile the RT1 seems to be going pretty well.
cheers pancho.
