I would particuarly like to see your shots after the track was shut down if you have time. I used to work at Sugarloaf Dam (adjacent to the track) and actually drove my Datsun 180B around the track as I didn't have a bike at the time. Perhaps you can confirm that the MMBW bulldozed all evidence the track was there I presume to discourage riders prior to the area being inundated. I have great memories of racing there. I never had the balls to take the jump on the the main straight on the left side. Also watched  a few Grand Nationals there as well as the MCRCV Hartwell Club comps. I was there the day Anton had his accident. Jerry

Also Mark Pace is on a '78 CR wearing KFC gear who sponsored him in '78, Gall and Gunter are in Pepsi gear which was their '78 sponsor and Pelle Granquist wasn't here in '77... so i guess  it must be '78 ;)

Awesome pics! Thanks for downloading them.  Brings back memories; I was riding at each of those events, Wallan I was on an RM250B, Melb Supercross was on an RM250Z.

That's a great shot of someone trying hard on an old bike-when it was new. Love it.
Was talking to an older rider of a modern mx bike the other day and told him that I thought how much easier they are to ride these days and he was indignent that I was so rude and how would I know etc....I said it was obvious from the number of mistakes the new riders made and still got away with without crashing-I guess I'm not on his xmas list now :D :D :D 8)

Even the 250 Honda's weren't great ,without alot of work ala Pace and Brehens they were hardly competitive although Andrew Baileys brother Rob was competing on a stockie.

I just got off the phone with Frank and he was fairly sure it was 1975 and then I checked my own notes and came up with the following extract from a piece I wrote in issue #43 of VMX.........
'Frank's growing reputation as a tuner saw him appointed to manage Kawasaki Australia's new works team in 1974. Western Australian Graeme Smythe and New South Welshman Geoff Woodham were the riders aboard ther newly released KX range. These bikes were meticulously prepared and despite the limited budget, the riders, especially the brilliant Smythe began to achieve results never seen before from the 'green machine'. In 1975 Kawasaki decided it had a team to take it to the more fancied opposition so the company obtained the ex Jim Weinert SR250 and SR400 machines from Japan.....and so on.
My own recollections have Graeme aboard the SR dicing with Per Klitland on the OW Yamaha, the only year he rode it, I recall thinking at the time that seeing three genuine works bikes (Ploens RH as well) was something pretty unique for Oz at the time. Towards the end of 1976 Team Kawasaki had disbanded and Smythe (and Frank) signed with Maico distributor Blair Harley to ride a Maico for the 76/77 seasons. I left Australia in late 1975 and with the exception of 3 months return when my Dad passed away in 1976, didn't come home until late 1980 so any memories I have of the SR must be from prior to '76.

I just read in the Jan '78 ADB that Smythe rode a Husky for Col Evans in the last round of the '75 Mr MX series then got a ride with the Amco Kawasaki Eagles team for the '76 season with a 250 and 400 Works Kawasaki but had a mediocre year. He said the bikes were shithouse and the production bikes even worse!
For 1977 he joined the Blair Harley Maico team.

I think we've got some aged memory time cross overs here :-\......Frank's still pretty certain they started on production Kawasaki's in 75 but both Brian and John seem to be correct in the works bikes being used in 1976. The The team was together for around 18 months to two years before Kawasaki pulled the financial plug and they signed with Blair for 77. Frank doesn't recall the Husky ride in the final Mr Motocross round.
Kawasaki experts might be able to help by identifying the bike in the photo of the Amco Kawasaki team riders on page 29, issue 43 of VMX. It looks like a stock 75 KX to me but I'm a tad hazy on Kawasaki's.

Frank reckons the SR's were fast but fragile and the 250 was a far better bike than the 400. By the time they gave the bikes back to Kawasaki Frank had made totally new (stronger and better ratios) transmissions, clutch baskets and many other parts due to 1: Kawasaki's inability to supply parts and 2: the bikes being so fragile. Frank reckons the bikes were eventually way better and far more reliable than when they got them. Frank agrees that the stock KX was pretty ordinary compared to the competition.

How about some Euro photos from the sixties.....
Most folks trace the origins of supercross back to 1972 and Mike Goodwins 'Superbowl of Motocross' at the LA Colliseum or even further back to 69/70 and the night motocross events held at Los Angeles' Ascot Speedway. In fact, stadium motocross events were occuring in Prague in the old Czechoslovakia in the 50's/ 60's in front of 100,000 screaming fans. The Iron Curtain was pretty high in those dark days so we in the western world didn't hear of these events until after the wall fell.

Most of the generic 'photoshop' programs that come standard with the software package on your computer these days should be able to do it. I don't know if there's a way do convert multiple files at once, but individually, once you have a pic file open, select 'save as' from the File menu and there'll be a 'save as type' option at the bottom of the window where you can select a different format such as jpeg

Not as old as some of this stuff I know but talk of YZ 100's got me thinking of when there was a mass of them in the early eighties....

YZ 100 J

YZ 100 H

There was also a class just for these things. It started out as an XR 80 class and eventually became the XR 80/100 in a YZ 80 frame class. This kid would be skipping through the Monza Quads....

And here was my one and only venture into KTM's and Enduro. Both short-lived (but I wished I'd kept the helmet and pants) :'(...

Watching this bit of history, I wonder what happened to all those photos taken in the 60s & 70s - probably still in a box in the attic/garage with cockroaches munching away.  What a shame!

DA, what a great bloke, he did so much in the 70's for up & coming Speedway riders in & around Sydney.
One of the sadest things I can remember when his son Brett lost his life in England.
Great photo's & history Firko, love the Moorebank stuff, went there a lot as a kid.
Cheers.

Thanks Steve,l I had my first race at Moorebank. I didn't particularly like it but it's got a firm place in our motocross history. I couldn't agree more about both Denis and Laurie Alderton, good blokes. Denis never really got over Brett's death.

Here's one for you.....

Moorebank track was located withing the Holdsworthy Army base at Liverpool, south western Sydney. Jim Scaysbrook told me that the basics of the track are still there but it's badly eroded and grown over. Immediately after the track closed the area was supposedly used for tank training so you'd imagine the tanks would have wiped out most of the features.

When I was setting up for the first VMX open meeting in 1988, Geoff Eldridge and I had a meeting with the base commander over the possibility of us holding a one off vintage motocross meeting on the old course. Despite his enthusiasm for the idea, it was vetoed for security and logistical reasons. Unfortunately the days when the public could access an army base at will were long gone. :'(

Top stuff there , Firko, I did ride at Moorebank, once, on  a freaking NSU Max, that was interesting to say the least.
Memories of St George Club and Open  meetings there, Scaysie on a 500 ?? , can't remember, with all the rest of the guns of the day.
Oh and yeah, rider # 239 at Amaroo " Sid Crome " !!!  nearly as bad as the entrant at Woodstock, listed in the program as one " R.Sole" !!

Anyone who knows Brian Clarkson will understand that his life is worthy of a feature film. Brian is one of the true characters of Australian motocross, the last of the old school hard men. Not many could out drink him, pull more roots or out ride him when he was at the peak of his powers. He won numerous state titles in all disciplines but even though he was good enough to beat any champion on his day, an Aussie MX title always managed to elude him. He did win the Sunrasia Desert Rally on a Husky and was the first "works" Alron rider, tying in with his East Coast distributorship. Naturally he hated the bike with a passion and was relieved when someone broke into his shop and stole his in 1974.

Brian was one of the original batch of vintage racers in the late 80's aboard the ex Roy East Metisse and his own Matchy Metisse. Unfortunately the party boy lifestyle had caught up with him and while he was as fast as ever for a lap or two, his sixty fag a day habit played havoc on his ability to steer the heavyweight bikes at front of the pack for the full race distance.

Brian's still around, living in retirement in Port Maquarie and despite his poor health he's the same cantankerous yet lovable old reprobate he's always been. We're hoping he can join is old mates in Klub Kevlar at CD9 and perhaps do a lap or two aboard Jonesy's American Eagle 405/Alron clone.

Adrian and the more famous Terry are Anthony's older brothers. Frank Stanborough would have been aboard his works ported RT1 Yamaha. Frank struck up a friendship with old Don Jones, father of Gary, DeWayne and the YZ Yamaha. Don sent Frank the porting templates of the works RT1MX which Frank applied to his own RT1 which he reckons turned it into a missile. We're planning on using those same specs in my dirt track RT1 engine.

Firko do you know where at Singleton these shots were taken. The Singleton club during the 70' - early 90's had several tracks but I can not place those shots the ones with Glen Bell looks like Abbey Green but the other one looks a bit like Bulga. Any ideas?

This stuff is the very eccense of this forum and our sport/hobby. It is so sad to know that so many of these guys have met the big C. It is the most wonderful of all to see how they are remembered by their friends and even those that didn't know them but can relate to our shared passion for old dirt bikes.

Firko I didn't know him but a guy like John Hind with the 'guts' that ride took is missed by all good men. Thankyou for sharing those photos and the little back ground. It somehow makes me proud and yes honoured to continue a sport those guys loved.

Monty, I can't recall the name of the Singleton track but remember that it was just off the main road (Possibly the New England Hwy) and that a railway track had to be crossed to get into the place. There was quite a keen vintage mover and shaker local whose name I can't remember involved in getting these meetings happening. He rode Husky's and owned the ex Guy Cooper Surf team RM Suzuki which I had the honour of using as my transport for the final day of the Cessnock ISDE.

From memory the track hadn't been used much since the seventies and was part of a sheep or cattle property. The owner/farmer put an end to the venue when he decided that he wanted to resume pasture on the land. It was a great vintage friendly track with minimal dust and a firm base that didn't break up. The racers loved it and Penrith club got well above average entries for the three of four meetings held there including many Queenslanders and even a few Victorians.

'Hinesy' was such a character. His main deal was dirt track at which he was exceptionally quick on his rattey looking but extremely fast Bultaco Astro's (now owned and ridden by John Imrie and raced by young Olly). When Klub Kevlar sat to decide the racers to be honoured on the perpetual trophies we donated to HEAVEN for the Crawford River Classic we picked John Hine to be honoured on the Pre '70 Award.

I've been involved with the vintage movement in one way or another since 1986 and while compiling these photos it dawned on me how cancer has taken so many good people from our sport. Perhaps it's because we're from a generally older demographic that there seems to be so many but it's sad just the same. The one that really got to me and the 'good 'ol boys' was Greg Sweikert's trip to CD1 at Kyneton. He was in the final stages of prostate cancer and knew he didn't have a lot of time left. He took Nathan his seven year old son to the event so the boy could experience one last father and son bonding weekend away. They were staying at the same YMCA camp as us and Greg told us his sad story and asked us if we could involve him and Nathan in as much of the fun as we could...he really wanted that weekend to stick in Nathans mind. We all adopted the kid that weekend taking him for 'doubles' on our race bikes and Jonesy even took him for a spin on his Hagon Jawa long track bike which he was racing in the Aussie Long Track titles in Bendigo on the same weekend. We partied hard with Greg and his little bloke was right in the middle of it all, having a hoot of a time, Greg wanting him to experience everything, even stuff Mum might not think suitable for her little boy. It was a special time for all of us, contributing to what may have been the last time Greg and his son spent time together. A few weeks later he took his family to the USA to do the 'Route 66' trip and do the California theme parks as a family unit. Greg died a few weeks after they returned and  I'm certain none of us will ever forget the time we spent with he and his son at CD1.
A side aspect of that CD1 was that we got to know Magoo for the first time. He was staying at the same YMCA camp that we were and although not riding due to recent knee surgery, he got right into the camaraderie and partying that CD is famous for. I well remember him sitting having a quiet chat and a beer with Greg. It's ironic that the 'Big C' has since taken him and VMX magazine founder Ray Ryan, the originator of Classic Dirt out as well. There are quite a few more.

Get your prostate checked every year, it may save your life.

The legendary Dick Mann, photographed in 1986 at his old DMS workshop in the sleazy end of Richmond, California. I was in California to attend the second Dick Mann Vintage Dirt Bike Rally at Sandhill Ranch. The event was an all encompassing meeting with vintage trials and motocross plus a great swapmeet. I dropped in to his shop to meet my hero and before long Dick was at me to get the VMX thing happening in Australia. A one hour visit morphed into Dick inviting me home for the night and travelling to Sandhill Ranch with him the next day. i've still got the hand written letters he later sent me regarding rules and format which we used to set up the first meeting at Amaroo Park. What many people don't know is that Dick was within a cooee of coming down to ride at that Easter 1988 meet but a prior engagement caused it not to happen.

He's photographed with his beloved BSA Goldstar scrambler. The car in the background is a genuine super stock Hudson Hornet that'd been raced at Daytona beach in the early 50's. The pile of twisted metal comprises of genuine BSA Goldstar, Metisse and other interesting frames he'd saved from the wreckers and the tip. Despite a severe bout of throat cancer, he's still alive and as keen as ever. Legend isn't a good enough word to describe Dick Mann.

The great Billy Grossi, photographed at Sandhill Ranch in 1988. I was racing a friends CZ at the meeting and just happened to be pitting next to a bunch of party boys who were having a great old time. One of them happened to be Billy and I immediately liked him and his hippy/surfer Santa Cruz mates. I spent the weekend with them and a week later met up with Billy and some other old racers at a Santa Cruz bike shop and later a great little surfer bar for many beers. He was the most laid back ex pro racer I've ever met. A very likable bloke.

It was a different track to the normal one and it was a different event to the one were we had presentation at the pub, Clarko was there as the guy who own the property we raced on gave him a missing chrome bit for his mainline ute, Yeah Graig Ekitt or something like that was on the CCM as my memory is a little shaky I think it was the only time Phippsy came up. It was an old track that was used to hold races in the 70's , the land holder gave us use for that one event then unfortunately had a divorce and had to sell.

I'm glad all's well now mate. My old mate Billy Brown of Montesa pre 70 fame had a malignant kidney removed a year or two ago and he's fine now. I've seen two good mates go through hell with prostate cancer which prompted me to have my first check up three years ago. They found an anomaly which thankfully turned out to be 'only' an infection but I was pretty bloody worried while waiting for those test results let me tell ya! I now get my prostate checked every 6 months and a full checkover every year. It's worth it.

Yes you were there , another give away for Inverell events are the white electric fence tread in posts used a corner markers which were the way we did all temporary tracks back then.

This is the best stuff on here for a while! Haven't got any Moorebank stuff Firko?
My experience with the big C could have been a lot worse, the first doc I spoke to about symptoms said "Oh thats not unusual at your age, don't worry about it."  I changed docs, this one said 'Ill send you to a speciallist. Just as well, Radical surgery followed with the speciallist saying "you're pretty young at 57 for this". Ten months recovery time.
Nowadays blokes are up and running in a week or so!
17 years later all clear with an anual PSA check.
 Cheers pancho.

Wally....All the Moorebank stuff Gus Priem sent me is back on pages 10 and 11 of this thread. I've got a couple of b&w box brownie snaps from Moorebank but I can't seem to find them. They're not very good anyway.
I'm glad you went for that second doctors opinion Wal....things might have gone pear shape for ya ;)

While I'm here I keep forgetting to thank you for the Nepean 6 hour CD, it brought back a lot of memories. I also enjoyed the dulcet tones of your singing on the sound track. You're a real pop star mate!

Have a happy New Year Wal..... ;D

I seem to recall a NZ v Aust teams event at Mystery Creek, Hamilton thousands of years ago, but I'd have thought more like '77. I think Ron Dinsdale was in the team, and also possibly Mike Landman : certainly Russell Speak was. Can't say I remember Grunt racing in NZ.

Bloody brain cells.... ::)

Glen i have a video of a trans Tasman event in Gordonton Hamilton Labour weekend 1977, sponsored by radio waikato . 12 riders in each team with a 100 kiwis trying to qualify on the first day.
In the Kiwi team were Ivan miller , Peter Ploen, Vic Reader,Gary Goodfellow, Frank White, Gary Whittle , Wayne Ady, Ashley Major, Kerry Evans plus others

Aussies included Trevor Flood , Hans Applegren , Dave ? on a husky , Danny Riley , Mike Landman , Lester Rowley , Daryll Willoby ,Peter callum plus others.

It was a comanding victory for the Kiwis with Ivan being in a class of his own  :)

Jeez William, I think you're on the money there mate. Appelgren rode a 360 Auto (green tank) and Peter Kalen was a Granquist clone.
Re Gunter's 1979 400, that'd be his RM I'm picking, not the white-guarded factory RN400 he appeared on at the Amaroo Park Mr Motocross round : what a weapon that was !

This pic of Graeme is from my collection, and this was taken by my long time friend Ron Clark
He took quite a lot of stuff with his trusty M3 Lieca, one of the great Kell Caruthers close-up getting into it at Oran Park on the fab. Honda four.
He recently told Ron that he had it mounted over his work bench over there.

About to start Dave Fullston's Husky 400 #1 is a youthful looking ace tuner Jon "Hawkeye" Hawkins ( ex Ivan Miller). With a tank full of methanol, and a carby slide full of nitro, you can see that his hand is nowhere near the throttle as he starts the bike. Once Dave gives it a big rev on the line, the sponge above the throttle slide is compressed, the nitro is squirted into the carby and holeshot city here we come. We always wondered why Hawkeye never revved the bikes on the line after starting them.
Although my memory is not so good, I think Dave Fullston dominated in SA on this bike in 1977, winning the A grade star and the #1 plate for 1978. Although living in Qld now, last year he flew back to SA for the State VMX titles at Acusa Park and won the Evo 250 title on one of Don Bowey's CR250RZ's.
Jon Hawkins still lives in Adelaide but is over tuning bikes and is now an electrician with his own successful business. Presume that this shot ( and the next one with Dave as #01 alongside Steve Gall) is from Mr. Motocross series somewhere in Victoria in 1978?

Here's a shot of the legendary Bill Watson from WA jumping his 1960 Maico 250 (inside line) at Herne Hill in the very early 60's. Bill's in his 80's and still races regularly and will be coming to race with his son Brian and a contingent of West Aussies to the Canberra Classic Nats later this year. Bill still owns the old iron barrel Maico and his son Brian (Watto HVA) has told me he'll run off some photos of it tomorrow which I'll post as soon as I get them.

Not sure if this is a MR Motocross round or not because Gunter would've been running the #1 plate although with the Pepsi sign in the background it could be. #78 is Pelle Granquist

An OLD MX PIC ,though not available to view

Quote from fb
Got a great story for all Aussie MX fans. During the Motocross Grand Prix in Italy last weekend I book into the hotel. The guy at reception smiles when he sees my Aussie passport and tells me to follow him. He takes me to his office and opens an old book. Inside the book he pulls out a photo. It is of the Australian MXdN team of 1986, Dacka, Bell and Army. Signed and kept in great condition. He then told me about how the team spend the week at his hotel and what a great bunch of people. His son who must have been like 10 in 1986 starts to tell me stories. Made my trip to Italy just that little bit better.

How good is that!!!
I wonder if the update mentioned above is for the twin pointer.... ::)

they were a popular upgrade at the time

made less noise, felt better under the saddle and turned out new minibikes without protest....

some needed suspension upgrades....apparently .......as well as a new sticker kit (botox :o)

It looks like another case of Yankie FRIENDLY FIRE !!....detail has never been their strength......Mr Robert would be disappointed.. ;D

I have always thought this was Roger as it his style, Its not Joel as the rider is to tall and skinny Joel is much broader across the shoulders but the physic is very much a young RD
