Aussies heading to Vets MX of Nations
August 17, 2010
Big Honda Rider Brad Van Barello will be one of the four Australians taking on the Veterans Motocross of Nations even in 2010
Australia and MA will be represented in the Veterans Motocross of Nations event being held at the iconic circuit of Farleigh Castle in England on 18/19 September.
The Australian team to compete in the MXdN event consists of Brad Van Barrelo, John Kittle and Russell Williamson out of Queensland and Chris Hall from South Australia. The draw-card event will be run over four motos of 20 minutes + 1 lap on twin-shock machines over the two days of racing.
The four riders will be pitted against some big names including ex-World Champions Eric Geboers, Graham Noyce, Neil Hudson, David Thorpe, Shayne King and David Knight (of Enduro fame).
In excess of 10 other riders (De Witt, Karsmakers, Anderson, Prince, Wheeler, Herring, Schmitz, Mathia, Hanson, House, Pratley etc) have GP experience behind them to add to the competitive level of the event.
It is rumoured that Josh Coppins will be riding, and Chris Walker is taking a break from road racing to compete.
Australia’s Jeff Liesk will be racing as well as getting back together with Geboers and Thorpe for some demonstration laps on a replica works Honda CR500 machine, reliving the days when the three were team mates but highly competitive against each other at tracks such as Farleigh Castle.
The Australian riders have sourced the twin-shock machines in England and have been pleased with the support of the local riders.
The bikes used in the event are predominantly from the early 80’s era, and are regularly used in the very popular British Twin-Shock MX Championships.
Event organiser, Dave King, expects the Vets MXoN to be the major Motocross event on the British calendar behind the Maxxis British MX Championship events for 2010.
With 11 teams from around the world competing, the event is assured of international attention.
Farleigh Castle is to Motocross as Monaco is to Formula 1, and many a round of the 500cc World Championship was held at the circuit during the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s before it was closed and returned to farming.
Two MXoN events were held at the circuit which is laid out over natural terrain and includes some steep uphill and downhill challenging sections, following the same course as that used for the 500 GP’s through the 80’s.
“The track looks fantastic and I can’t wait to tackle the uphill and downhill steps” said Van Barrelo when shown photographs of the circuit.
All four riders are gathering as much information as possible about the circuit to ready themselves for the challenge, mindful that riders from last year’s highly successful event will have some track knowledge and the English riders will have studied the new layout first hand this year.
Williamson was not as enthusiastic about the infamous steps, remarking that Van Barrello and Kittle were mere youngsters compared to himself and Hall.
“Being in our 50’s, we are going to have our work cut-out for us against the so-called veterans who are 35 - 40 years old.
"Fortunately, each team must have at least three riders over 40 years old, but Hall thinks that should be over 55 years old so that he doesn’t feel left out!” remarked Williamson.
John Kittle was very pleased with the support offered by Motorcycling Australia, and noted “There is an enormous amount of interest in veterans racing and evo and Vintage Motocross world-wide, and the event at Farleigh will bring that all together.
"We are proud to be representing MA and hope that our efforts to compete at the event will attract the international fraternity to compete in events down here such as the Honda Broadford Bike Bonanza”.

well, its getting close to D-Day and Holeshot is getting edgeeeeeeeeeeee!, light duties only Boss man, stuff that, I'm making him work harder so he will be fitter and stronger and have some endurance to whip the Pom's ( can i say that) on their turf, as for the other 2 bludgers going from Qld, at least you'll get away from Anna for a while! Lucky, Lucky bastards (can i say that). So Holeshot might get his work finished on time to catch the plane, but I'm going to save all the nasty jobs till just before he leaves, payback for not taking me with them, lousy bastards, i could of been the pit bitch, bastards.
Cheers Trev, it's allright, i will stay here and do your work for ya Holeshot! you lucky bastard!
-
This is such a cool thing, good on you guys for going over to wave the flag for the Aussies and give em a bit of a serve. I hope there's plenty of coverage on the web and maybe a feature in a few of the MX/VMX magazines around the world.
-
Sounds like a cool event to be part of.
With some of the name dropping going on our guys are going to be the underdogs, but this might let them sneak in under the radar while the stars are waving to the crowds.
Good luck guys, I'm sure you won't do any worse than our modern des Nations efforts.
-
i wont be nice to them! i want to get them fired up so they will preform, holeshot, 090 and Johnnnnnnnny O, bastards i say, all bastards ;D
Cheers Trev, what times your plane holeshot?
-
As a wise man once said... suffer in your jocks!!! :-*
-
Trev i hope you've been giving your #1 employee plenty of time off to practice and train for this.. ;)

"what ever you see on film doesnt do justice to the steps.its 90degrees left straight down .with steps .i kid you not you cannot walk down it ,and 90degrees right at the bottom.i lost count of the guys who went through the catch fence at the bottom.anywho after a crap nights sleep ,i am out to 1st practice with Rusty [yeah met the boys by now]the track was watered last night and they have been watering since 6am.oh boy was it slippery"
"Rusty had a good laugh at your old uncle as he came past me sidelined on the last lap with a dead bike .some clown had forgotten to put enough fuel in for what was a really flat out circuit"

I noticed the name Toon Karsmakers in there too, he raced a supercross at Fremantle oval around 1983. The same event that Chuck Sun and Hakan Carlquist rode in from memory.

Hi guys. Waiting in the hotel till we take off on the second part of our trip to the U.S.
Those poms know how to do it. Bigger than a G.P is all I heard all weekend. These 40-50 year olds would smoke the best we have in Oz in the moderns I would reckon. They are full time with their own series all over Europe.
I was off the pace by a mere 20 seconds......per lap!
Had the best time. Chatted to heaps of guys while walking around the pits. Pure exotica as far as the eye could see, and more in the next paddock...s!
Shit! Up to 12 pounds already on the net.
Cheers.
.
-
we would like to see more photos., it looks like you had a great time.
-
20 seconds a lap!
well the rest of us seem to be dealing with that ok Brad :D
good to see you guys having fun!
enjoy the US and say g'day to Metty! 8)

thanks for dropping in with the update...enjoy :P

Did a bit of a google search and there are a few Karsmaker riders about overseas.Rob Karsmaker also had an article on Dakar as well =
http://www.fatbmx.com/modules/news/article.php?storyid=9450
Pierre and Toon Karsmaker are brothers apparentley with some nice wins from bitd. :P
cheers A
-
Toon Karsmakers was Pierre's younger and less successful brother. I'm not overly sure about Rob...perhaps he's either Toon or Pierre's son ???. I think Karsmakers might be a reasonably common Dutch name, I went to school with a fresh off the boat Dutch guy called Ervin Karsmakers and I doubt he was related.

Hey Brad,
Good to hear that you are having a hoot moonlighting as an International VMX Racer - not bad for a dumb tiler [ ;D].
Where are you off to in the States? More of the same, or off to the MXdN? [if it is the MXdN tell Metty he is a legend!!].
I can imagine the Geboers boys going back to Belgium and telling their friends that they beat 'Van Barrello'. Their mates at the pub won't believe them…
Ah… the tough life as an international superstar [enjoy it while you can].
VMX42 ;)
-
There (090, JohnnyO) are off to the MX des-nations....have a motor home and are stopping at Las Vegas on the way to Colorado.....I can see some trouble looming......a couple of beat up ol MXers in the desert trying to resist temptation!!....wont ya-all come in boy's and sit right down an littill miss Kitty will be right witch ya.....now where'd you boy's say your from?....

Las Vegas huh. I can see a couple of cheap bikes hitting the market when the boys get home!

Pretty cool track yeah. Old Mate was having a good crack on the KX. Makes you wanna book a spot on that container for next year! (I wonder if there were any Monts there?) :P

That's my mate Ian on the KX doing the filming. Might have to have a word with him about popping over to visit next year. ;)
A great event. I rode it in 2006 on a 74 Yam MX 250 and 2007 on a 80 Cagiva MXR 250. But since Dave King and the team have taken it over, they seem (I'm looking at the picies from Tas now) to have raised the bar considerably.

just got back today totally rooted
had a unreal experiance
the meeting was huge works bikes everywhere swap meet parts
that you would not believe more motorhomes than a motorhome show
the track what can i say it was unreal very rough long 20 min races
full gates 48 to 50 riders all classes
i rode the over 50s as well you got 3 laps practice 1 sighting 2 timed for gate pick
i was in first practice they watered the piss out of the track all night so it was greasy
as an eel in a bucket of grease paul is right coming down those steps its nearly verticle
and with water on it ::) i posted 13th fastest in the slime so i was happy with that
by the time we got out for des nations practice the track had dried so it was quite good
john siezed his cr480 on second lap so got a shit pick on gate
we all had a bit of bike set up issues but we just kept riding and working through them
overall we all went ok very fast riders and you are allowed 1 rider 35-40 year old
lots of ex gp riders in nations cup and long motos german and belgiums were on
bikes bristling with works parts very trick overall we circulated and didnt crash
although on the last few laps i think my hands nearly came off the bars 4 times a lap
having seen and ridden the track to do it again i would ride my own bike and i would know what to expect had a good run in second over 50s race got holeshot and was circulating in sixth till i stalled on last lap :'( ended up dropping this class too many races still ended up doing 4x20min
and 2x15min so i was rooted had trouble hanging on in last moto blisters on hands
brad john and chris all rode well and we had a awesome time thanks to dave king
and andy gregory for the bikes highlight of the weekend apart from racing
was jeff leisk riding and josh coppins on maico 490 8) and just meeting everyone
anyway enough for now i am going to bed zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
cheers rusty

What an awesome weekend! The biggest and best vintage motocross i've ever been to.
It was like being at a Grand Prix, the crowd was huge, the atmosphere unreal and the track was excellent.. long, wide, fast, big hills and bloody rough! 20 min motos were real hard work. The guys out front were unbelievably fast..they'd run at the front of a modern pro race back here.
I couldn't believe the amount of Maicos and there were so many trick bikes loaded with 'works' parts and even a few works bikes out on the track.
Dave King as his boys JohnnyT, Chris and Bermbasher were fantastic guys and helped us in any way they could making sure we had everthing we needed... many thanks to them.
I seized my bike saturday morning and a guy known as Maico Matty who i met walking the track thursday kindly offered me the use of one of his Maicos so thanks to him i was able to keep racing.
Also thanks to Dave for reopening the bar Sunday night after the barman went home.. we had a blast and all went home hungover with big smiles on our faces.
I highly recommend the trip to anyone thinking about going and hope to be able to go back again soon.
-
Ditto what John said.
Made some friends on the other side of the planet. Great guys, shite beer. The cider started to agree with me by Sunday night though!
Much better atmosphere than the MXDN! I think more people as well!
We couldn't believe our eyes with the sheer number and quality of bikes. Trick/works stuff everywhere.
Again thanks to Dave, Berm basher, Simon, John, Chris (Woody) and Matty. It was great just walking through the pits chatting with everyone.
The trip is highly recommended. 5 stars!
-
Bottom line vB, ball park figure for the UK leg. Don't mean to pry but we were to go this year and still hope to go next. Just a loose estimate will do.
-

My monts would have been there had all details ready to enter then found out that my business work got in the way and no way to aiter it gutted :'( :'( next year ;D ;D ;D

I'll have to get the dutchman to autograph my copy, just as well he's on the plane coming back from LA before he reads this or they would have had to load him through the cargo doors with that swelled up noggin!!. Sounds like a few more of us will have to go next year.....Tea and cake old chap? ;D

Hey Brad,
Why don't you spend a few minutes at the keyboard and give us some insights into what sounds like a great event. Any photos etc? Come on, even international VMX Factory Riders can spare a few minutes for us plebs back home.
Perhaps you should get your side of the story out there before the video is released! ;) And before your Missus sees it! ;D
Or are you being shy, because you are going to be the new STIG? 8) I'm not saying you couldn't do it, but I reckon you might have trouble keeping your white overalls clean. ;D I can see it now… Brad van Barello - the Dirty STIG!!!

Bottom line vB, ball park figure for the UK leg. Don't mean to pry but we were to go this year and still hope to go next. Just a loose estimate will do.
$2200 for the plane ride, cattle class. 750 pounds for the motor home which is your transport and accommodation. We took a 50 pound (where is that symbol?) ride in a cab to get the motor home. The rest are consumables. Fuel, food and cider etc. Don't spend a cent on that horrible beer!
John and I split everything which made it heaps better. He would eat one day and I would eat the next :D. The pub was walking distance and served a great meal and the catering was there all weekend as well. Rusty had the better motor home as he dealt with a company direct. Ours used private owners that hire them so we never got a generator which is a must. There was plenty of tap water on site. Cheap week really considering. Just need to work out how to earn money while I'm away...I shall be pop riveting my thighs to my seat waiting for the doco to come out!

gordon crockard smoked everyone on a 1986 kx500
was great too watch there was basically star riders in all the races
from the past and present and the amount of works bikes
actually on the track was a eye opener
but i think if i had one i would ride it too
i will post some pictures on the ning site
cheers rusty
-
Hey Russ,
great stuff. did you get plenty of works bike pics?
-
(http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2007-5/1259377/trip%20260.JPG)
The Dave Thorpe works bike now owned by Dave King. He was kind enough to let me push it round to Thorpies tent.
Does this thing look good on me?
Everyone was approachable which was great.
I will put some pics up of bikes on the ning site as well as its heaps easier than on here.
-
Great work Elvis!
-
yep it does look good on ya :P.. in the first pic(standing) you look like your ready to steal it- with the poistion of your fingers. ;D ;D :P
cheers
-
Yep. You can see my mind ticking over. How can I fit it in my suitcase!
I have started uploading pic's on the ning site as well. Trick bikes abound. The Gobers' bikes were all works bikes. The Germans had some of the trickest. One of the riders' dad was a genius. He is the guy that made the front hub with the two front brakes. He had other inventions that escape me at the moment.
-
Had to throw this one in. WTF ???
Don't get pissed and stumble out the front door!

Finally back after some R&R on IoM and in Paris.
Had a fantastic time at Farleigh thanks mainly to Dave King, John Trueman and the rest of their gang. Their hospitality was tremendous despite them having to cope with several hundred other riders and thousands of spectators. However, as John K can testify, DO NOT GO TO THE PUB with them. Dave, Chris and Matt were unbelievable in stepping up to the plate with bikes and helped out when small problems arose (or not so small for JK).
The track was superb and chopped up heavily by the end of the second day. The most intimidating section for me was the down-hill steps; ok in an enduro but tricky with 5- 10 other riders in the same space. We all tended to take time to settle in, and I think a few more rides on the track prior to the event would have helped with our times. Setting up the bikes was hampered to some degree by our lack of track familiarity and how it chopped up over the course of the day.
Logistically we struggled at times due to lack of tools and fuel supply. We were able to beg, borrow and steal from other riders (many thanks to Bo, ex-Ohlins man from Sweden who's Husky shit its gear-box in his first race, to DK and to Steve Johnston, the Aussie speedway rider who is based in Swindon and had a ball racing at Farleigh).
David White, CEO of MA, helped out as "Race Manager", supplying transport to the local servo on Saturday evening to get fuel and making sure that we were all started and ready to go before each race. The uniforms supplied by MA looked great and were a big hit.
There turned out to be a gaggle of Aussie supporters, mostly friends of Steve Johnston's (Leigh Adams and Mark Lemon came in to watch) and I noticed Kiwi flags around the circuit (for Coppins and King, but they were waved each time an Aussie went by).
The atmosphere was great and at one stage the crowd went ballistic when I rode past; and then I was lapped by Wheeler and House.
The first corner was mayhem, with 45 riders funneling down into a narrow slippery corner. Brian Wheeler had ridden my bike around the circuit on Tuesday before the event and had then tampered with it so that it fell down in the first corner. He flatly denied it but why else would it have happened; twice?
The memories are endless; Terry House, a true gentleman and champion, Neil Hudson and brother Dave (Neil's son was racing and Dave ran a Yamaha parts supply outlet during the event), at last a drink on Sunday night (I still don't know what I was drinking), swapping jersey with Spanish rider and memories of 1978. I am sure that Brad, John and Rusty will also be sharing their memories with all and sundry for some time to come.
Naturally, my stories already involve me lapping at about 10 seconds quicker and by Xmas I will probably be winning each moto.
I will post some photos which I hope adds to those already out there. If you have ever dreamed of riding at an event like this, just DO IT !!!!!!! Cheers, Chris.

Thats great Chris :) been to Farleigh a number of times back in the day but never seen an aerial shot . what a turn out :o look at the cars in the punters car park alone :)
Judging by the pits , obviously noboby uses a car and trailer even at Vintage events over there ???
-
Alison, I thought he was taking it from the top of the castle, but even it's not that high!!.
Nice of them to paint the grass green and all.
There is a link to twin shock chairs at Farleigh on their site and it shows the grid-up and the start of a moto with them thundering around behind the grid-very good and great shots of the best chairs in the world.
-
How did you get a run in the chopper? Lucky bugger. Great shot, you just couldn't capture it on the ground.
-
Brad, John T took the shot. I didn't get air on the steps, let alone get a ride in the chopper. In fact my main motion over the weekend was towards the terra firma, not away from it. I tried to forward you a copy but it bounced back (maybe a back log of e-mails in your letter box?).
TM Bill, it was motorhome city ( and I don't mean camper vans).
-
Film star Rusty ...............

This maybe a silly question, :-\ but why do some many kick start there Maicos and bigger bikes with there right boot (standing) instead of left (saddled/standing postion).?
cheers
-
So you don't destroy the kickstarter & shaft

Guys, what's the critics review of the DVD of Farleigh, and how much ($$s) did it end up posting out to OZ.
I'm keen to get one if the postage price is ok.
