Title: Classic Dirt 7 – Are You Ready?
Post by: BAHNZY on May 27, 2010, 12:17:33 pm
By my calculations, as @ 12.00pm today there is;
15 ½ days
372 hours
22320 minutes
Or in old skool terms, 16 sleeps

If your anything like me, there will be a bike in the shed with the engine still not fitted, cables that haven’t been lubed, chains that ain't been adjusted. There's probably stale fuel in at least one of the bikes and a stack of other “minor” things that need attention. Even the car hasn’t been serviced and the new tyres that it needed 3 months ago still haven’t been fitted.
Given the unbelievable run of good weather that we have had in Melbourne, I hope (prey) that it continues in South East Queensland.

The countdown is on.

Bahnsy, it has been good weather so far, little bit of rain to keep the place green.

Was out at the track on Monday avo and they had just cut the grass and it really looks a picture.

Weather this time of year is normally good the odd day of rain so lets hope it holds.

It will be permo riding if the current patten holds.

Bike wise one and a half to go in preperation

Shane

Hey Shane,

One an a half to go… so does that mean that the other 20 are ready to go?

The competition is on between you and Sir Bradalot to see who arrives with the most bikes.

Who will win? I can't wait to find out.

 ::)
Let's see....

I have one It400C that played up late in the day at the last BMCC club day, haven't diagnosed the problem - thinking it'll just get a tidy up and constantly crossed fingers...

I have another IT400C that was locked up with a lightly rusted bottom end up till a month ago.  Got it moving with a breaker bar, and had hoped to split the cases, but just no time left, the frames still got to be painted up, so it'll probably just be put together as a display bike.  (and maybe I'll take it for a few rides....)   ;D See how it goes..

And I have a KDX400A1 which I haven't even touched yet - It'll get a quick tidy up and Dad can rattle his way around on that...

Apart from that, Yep, I'm ready!!    ::)  ::)  ::)  ;D  :'(

oh yeah, and the second IT has a VM38SS which requires soooooo much internal tidy up that I was hoping to replace it with a new Mikuni, but apparently there are none available at the moment.....    :-\

After tight negations with my major sponsor for the event LBR. I have a pair of shiny 77 KTM’s a 250 and 400. I have also acquired the services KTM dealer supremo Mark (Turbo) Turner to act as my pit bitch and fettle any mechanical needs should they arise.

The LBR boys are deciding which of the 495’s to bring is the fastest. Hopefully the 390 special will be finished in time as well.

The Suzukis are ready but the Cheney is still an engineless, wheelless hulk after dismantling her to polish the frame which turned out to be a 5 day job. It'll be right though. The good news is that the blenders done and the Magoorita party will be full on in the Kevlar Kompound on Saturday night. A new mirror ball has been purchased after last years unfortunate soccer practice incident and I believe Husky Havens dancefloor is being polished as we speak.
The king prawns will be picked up in  Ballina on the way up and a new Chili recipe will make its debut. The new recipe is the winner of the 2010 Catalina Island Chili Cookoff....the Monaco GP of Chili Cookoffs.
Last years amazing Klub Kevlar recipe was the 1977 winner and it's taken a long time for a better recipe to come along. We'll also be brewing up a big pot of curry and boiled rice to manufacture your own curried prawns and rice.
Bikewise  Chippy's sure to have his 50 Maicos, Phippsys bringing some pre '65 tackle plus my old '84 SC500 Maico, Jonesys debuting the 405 American Eagle and leaving Black Betty at home for the first time since CD1. He'll also bring the blue Metisse and Cheney Matchless. Bernie's bringing the 490 Maico, 465 Yamaha IT and our PE400Z. Franks bringing his new pre 65 NSU Sportmax powered Greeves, Jakes bringing his lovely YZs and there'll be shitloads more, I know I've forgotten someone or two.
This year we've also got an accomodation compound with a wagon train of rental caravans to aid our beauty sleep..................this'll be fun.

Are you bringing the TM as well as the 500 Brent? I'll have to get you to take the RM125 for a run and see what you think of the suspension. I have no idea about that stuff, as long as it goes up and down sort of OK I am happy...

Yup, I'm bringing both Graeme.

I'll be interested to hear what you think of both of them, comparing the TM to yours and the 500 to what you've had.
As good as I think my suspension my be I've had nothing to compare it to so I'll be after feed back from as may riders as possible.

Looking forward to finally meeting you

One for the locals.
Last trip to Conondale i took the route from Toowomba to Brisbane, followed the coast road then onto Connondale.
It was suggested to me that a better alternative with the big (6mt box trailer) would be the more scenic Goondawindi, Dalby, Quinalow, Nutgrove, Kilcoy then onto Conondale.
If anyone thinks this is o/k (or NG for that matter) and has a better alternative than going through the greater district of Toowomba and Brisbane it would be appreciated.

From Warwick I turn off the Toowomba road and go to Gaton by passing all the Toowomba BS then take the ESK turn off.

Don't speed Bahnsy they usually have a speed trap just before Conondale.
After the event the police usually set up a breath test on both roads.

I'm hopeing to make it to at least one day to CD7 (if I can get my bike finnished :)) and being new to vmx and not being at a classic dirt before I've got some questions
1/ Do you need a MA licence to ride
2/ Do they have a area to do jetting/ test runs (even if things go well I won't have a chance to ride it before CD7!)
3/ Is there some form of scrutineering you have to pass
sorry for all the questions but its all new to me :)

Dave Tanner made the suggestion we go to vic and back via the coast road. Heaps of 110k zones and new roads. From what I here you need a kidney belt to go the inland route.

Strange you should mention the coast road, just had a conversation with a mate in Sydney an he said you'd be way better taking the Hume to Sydney bypassing it with the new road then heading to Newcastle then onto Brisbane. Still not sure which is the best way to go.

from melb go up the newell take toowomba exit just past warwick
go through toowoomba towards crows nest
turn right at hampton towards esk
go through esk follow signs to sunshine coast and you will come to a exit that says maleny, turn left
go to maleny and turn left and you will be ther in 15 min

and no they are not ready  :'(

I have to say I've gone from Canberra to Gympie via most of the possible routes and these days much prefer the coast. The M7 lets you bypass much of Sydney, most of the road now is dual lane and fenced against roos and livestock, and plenty of accommodation and food. I usually arrange an epass for the M7 and for the Gateway beforehand too.

Mark, yes, we'll be there for dinner for sure. I was there only a couple of weeks ago on the way up to Coles Creek and had a fine meal. Top little spot that one.

Rusty,
The road through Toowoomba, does that take in the stretch that takes you through the city centre and up the hill? The last time couple of times i have gone that way (during the day) it took 40 min to get through Toowoomba and almost cost me a clutch.

The road that you refer to coming out of ESK, my map shows a road going to Kilcoy following the lake and another going up to the D'Aguilar Hwy via Toogoolawah, which one? I'm in a car/trailer combo that will be getting (at best) 12/14 mpg so i need to get my fuel range right based on my BP fuel card and the avalaible servo's.

Thanks Heaps,

Bahnsy

12 more sleeps and counting.
Dropped the fresh engine in the the 78 250 yesterday. Started 3rd kick and all was fine till i gave it a rev and it decided to make make an almighty screaming noise. A few hours of diagniosis and we find that the NOS clutch basket from evil-pay has locked up on the shaft. A little bit of maching to get some end float into the shaft and we are good to go again.

For most of us two stroke fans, there is nothing like the sound of a fresh/crisp air cooled engine that doesn't have any piston noise and fin rattle.

Rusty, are you suspended yet?

Nearly there "Bahnsy", air cleaner, oil change, bolt on side covers and seat. "Hey Hoony hope Big Red doesn't mind cuddling up to a bit of Green" for the trip to Queensland. Road trip with Macca, glad were not in our late teens early 20's anymore would be a long trip ;D.

It's now June, so we are now in the same month.

Started the process of doing the final check over and found that the WP's on the KX500 are weeping. Now to try and find a set of fork seals in record time. Pulled the air cleaner out of the 125 to give it a clean, dropped it into the kero and went to get it out and was nothing more than a mess of pieces at the bottom of the container. Guess it's about time to put a new element in it. Still on track to leave next Tuesday!

Last time we used an aftermarket coil from a 4 cylinder road bike where they have 2 cylinder's running of the one coil. From memory there was a thread way back on this and there was also some mention of a jet ski coil being compatible.

i'll give you the heads up Mark, take some earplugs (130dB Industrial/or Jet engine mechanic type) as Macca sounds like an Air Cooled KX80 on the rev limiter with no muffler when he snores (which is 15 hours/Night) :D

Road trip sounds like Fun. I am sure Big Red will enjoy the company on the long haul.

Hey vmxken, I've been told it's O.K. to bring and ride your
Pre 90 bike if that's all you have. Can you please confirm
as theres a number of us coming up from Sydney. Thanks
Title: Re: Classic Dirt 7 – Are You Ready?
Post by: vmxken on June 02, 2010, 09:52:54 am
No, that is absolutely not correct.  In exceptional circumstances, where an '86 model of a certain brand is the same as the pre '85 model then I've said OK.  But as a blanket rule, are pre '90s allowed to be ridden, the answer is no.  That will change as time goes on but at present it is a pre '85 event only.

Regards

Ken

Nope.  :P

Actually, I must admit that this evening is the first time that I have had the chance to get a bit excited about the upcoming CD7.  :o

We set ourselves the fairly difficult task of getting the new issue out before CD7 and as a consequence, things have been a little hectic at VMX land.  Today, we mailed out the new issue, and it's a bit like a weight being lifted from the shoulders, adn we're now in CD7 mode.... bring it on! ;D

No doubt Ken and I may be starting to sound a bit like the "Fun Police" regarding what you can't do at CD7 - but unfortunately, there have to be a few rules that make the event work for everyone. ;D

So, at the expense of again being a killjoy, I need to let everyone know one more important information item.... ::)

PLEASE do not try to turn up at CD7 any earlier than 7.30am on Friday morning.  General admission and camping entry to the venue will not be possible any earlier than that.

So, if you are travelling from a distance and are likely to arrive sometime late Thursday, you will need to work out a place to stay on Thursday night, other than at the Conondale venue itself.  There will be no exceptions to this rule.  If this is a problem, we suggest you retime your trip to arrive sometime on Friday morning.  Conodale is a large venue and there are three camping areas, so there should be plenty of room for all.  ;)

That's not what happened last year.
People were camping on the grounds on Thursday.

 ??? ??? ???

We are not interested in what may or may not have happened last year.  ::)

To clarify:  Event organisers, workers and sponsors have access on Thursday (as they should).  Some do camp on Thursday night which is actually a necessity as they have to be there first thing on Friday.  ::)

But for the General Admission and Camping, do NOT arrive before Friday morning.  :)  No exceptions will be made.

One more sleep and I'm on the road tomorrow.

I'm now starting to remember all those little things :o.................................

See you there

Brent

3 hours.....that's my call when you are three hours into your drive when you remember something you forgot!

Brad, I've always found the time you realize you've forgotten something is proportional to and distance you have to travel. ie I found the bikes had no side stands and I had forgotten the work stands just after Tennant Creek.

Ken and Ajay, many thanks for all your time posting the concerns people have, but if everybody would just visit the VMX mag site all these questions have been answered for the past 12 months ;)

Just a little foot note, have been up today fitting the new Wiltec access bridge accross the creek to open up some more space for campers over the back.

Will post some shots on the ning site for anyone interested.

Count down is now below weeks and offically days :D :D

Hoony, by myself, bumper had work commitments.
I'm in the Patrol 4.8 auto towing 2 tonnes, no problems towing but I can't work out which gauge is the tacho or the fuel!

For anyone coming up through Narrandera, the 50 or so odd km's in seems worse than I ever remember it. I've ridden MX tracks that are smoother!

All loaded up and leaving Ballarat at 4 am tomorrow for CD7 . Four of us in a Colarado towing an enclosed trailer with 2 mk7 Bully's on board. We are picking up a Maico Frame for Mick-De at Glenrowan and delivering to Mick hopefully tomorrow at Newcastle. Also have a frame, forks and front wheel for vmxken and a set of swing arm adjusters for Firko. Picking up a 125 Bully in QLD on the way and then a mk7 frame at CD7 that I got from the States. Then on the way home 2 incomplete XL250's. Not sure how we are going to fit it all in on the return trip as the trailer is pretty much full now. Anyway can't wait to get there.

Just in from the shed after a marathon 10hr shift, a tad pissed off by the fact that despite all good intentions, the Cheney won't be a runner. All of the cables are wrong except for the standard Yamaha clutch cable, the kickstarter fouls the footpeg and the Rickman rear brake pedal that I thought was a goer also fouls the footpeg. That's the thing with these hot rod bikes, everything needs to be made...it's a suck it and see situation. Seeing I'd put so much time into it to get it finished, I'll take her anyway and put her on display. We leave at 8am so I better pack the bags and hit the fart sack. See you all on Friday........
