You might have trouble finding your way to the "other" MX track Hoony, as they are only using one MX track this year. Too many tracks last year meant too many officials needed.

I will be their with a trade stand on the Saturday only, will have some stuff for sale etc.
Sunday I will be a rider / spectator.

See you there.

Geoff

Sounds like a plan. White Toyota Troop Carrier (W.A personalised plates) and a '73 CR250 running 133 numbers. "Mostly" be at the MX track, but if I can get my spare wheel fixed, will venture to the Dirt Track too.

Sat and Sun, will be on either the Vinduro loop or the MX track.

IT175J, YZ125X, and (god willing) a grey MX250A. No numbers on the IT, but the others have #818 on them.
Will be pitting with Donny - dunno which bikes he's bringing, but they're all #26.

Dark blue Volvo wagon.

And Den... Ten hours!? You really do need to put the turbo onto that truck of yours!

Mr Maico is now heading up the highway loaded to the hilt so to speak, but not before a quick visit to Stackers, yes, but another repair job  ;D ;D

We heard this morning that there was already about 100 cars there, think its going to be a big one.

New dog, new business & tickets to Mama Mia (a gift) has stood in the way of me going for the entire weekend, so wont be there until Sunday.

See you then

Great photos Paul captured the vibe I do believe. I only completed 4 laps in total after electrical problems with Fang the Sang. Obviously I'm dissapointed but still really enjoyed the day. Great organisation, all appeared to run smooth. Many smiling faces. Hope it's even better tomorrow. Cheers Jerry

I spent all day today (Sunday) at the vinduro loop, and had a great time. Sure it was a little dusty, but you just adapt your riding to suit.

It was a good idea to run the loop in reverse after lunch.

Great to catch up with old friends, and indulge in some bullshitting too. I saw nothing of the rest of the HBBB, but you can't have everything.

Thanks to all involved in putting this event together. I'll be back in 2011.

Just great! Of the hundreds of pics taken of my H7 those are the ones that get on here! Without going into the details I had drama's from the start and I never got to turn a wheel (of my own) on the track.
But I still had a grouse time! As usual I didn't get past the motocross track (suits me) and apart from my technical issues spent the weekend pissing myself laughing with KB, Ian, Jake (KB's boy) and a suspicious looking character who was hangin' around the place.
The cool guys on the scooter are Billet YZ and his boy Jake who got to see the whole show in style.

The track was awesome and the guys racing the Nats next week will have nothing to complain about as far as it goes. Look out whoever is in Mr Leathem's class. I reckon' he'll ride over the top of you to get that title..... ;)

Thanks again to KB and Ian for letting me have a decent old blast around on their ships. I really started to get to grips with that Red Devil. Hmmmmm...... :-X

Had a good time over on the other side of Broadford, worked my "shop" on the Saturday so didn't get to see all that much except that it looked busy everywhere.
Took the little KDX for a run on Sunday and was somewhat surprised how good it decided to run.
I found myself short on fuel as I wasn't expecting to ride it as much as I did, thanks for the spare litres Nathan.

I gave my camera to my son Jax to use...

A good fun weekend, with many highlights - I scored some bargains, met some top people, and caught up with even more top people that I'd met at previous events.

Was also given a chance to ride a few other bloke's bikes, which is always fun and always appreciated! In particular, GMC's low-mileage KDX175 shows how flogged out my 200 is, and Kurt's MX250 is damn fast.

My MX250 crapped its ignition, so is now in doubt for next weekend - but then again, I'm glad I had a chance to ride it before the Nationals, and I'm glad it happened before the Nationals...

The riding aspect was a bit underwhelming, to be blunt.

The MX track was a bit of a disappointment after the promises made about its condition - I really hope that its given some love in the next week - so much potential, but...
Specifically, the watering system seemed to be designed only to increase the size of the mud holes, and the down-hill whoops are simply not fun on a short travel bike.
The surface is magic and there was some parts of the track that were a ton of fun, so its not a total-loss - but if the track is in that condition next week, then I can confidantly say the Coffs and Connondale Nats had much better tracks... The bright side is that a few hours with a blade and some care with the watering system is all that seperates the Broadford track from awesomeness.
Also frustrating was the short sessions - I lost count of the number of times I'd go out and do one or two laps, only for the session to end. And then all of the riders would simply loop around and wait for the next session to begin - but we'd inevitably have to wait five minutes before the next session to begin. ??? I ended up spending most of Sunday arvo on the Vinduro track because it was a simple matter of rolling up to the start line and going...
I liked the idea of the era-specific sessions, but allocating two 15-minute sessions per era per day is always going to leave people feeling short changed. I understand why the abandoned the era-specific sessions, but I don't understand why the 'all-in' sessions were still so short.

Oh, and having all of the officials have their lunch breaks at exactly the same time seems a bit crazy. If the breaks were staggered (say, road race at 12pm, MX at 12:30, Vinduro at 1pm) then everyone (including the officials) would be encouraged to go and see other disciplines. As it is, the whole place grinds to a halt...

For me, the riding highlight was easily Sunday's vinduro loop, which was great fun even with the dust.

The MX track was a bit of a disappointment after the promises made about its condition - I really hope that its given some love in the next week - so much potential, but...

I don't think some people have ever really raced on "Proper MX" tracks. ???
Sometimes they were bottomless quagmires that suck your bike towards Inner Earth. (Just ask Jimmy Ellis about it in first round of the 1986 Mr Motocross held at Broadford. :o)

Somtimes they went for months in summer with the ruts that were left in from the last muddy event turned rock hard with a concrete quality to them that would break bike and bone when the two met with it.

Sometimes they had hugh kickers in the take-off ramps of the jumps (and oh yes there were doubles, triples and quads around in the early 1980's) that would see your rear guard over-taking your head in mid-air.

Some people seem to be of the consideration that they should be highly manicured, 2 ft loam deep freeways that rider should be able to cruise around on whilst smiling for the cameras with little fear of doing damage to one's self.

That track, as it stands, will be perfect for next weekend....... ??? ::)

I've ridden plenty of shitty MX tracks - but none of them have promised awesomeness...

And none of them had been used for a National level event of a sport that's about fragile old bikes (and often fragile old bodies) in that state.

Well maybe then the fragile old bikes and bodies should have their own track for such a meeting. These "Nationals" have bikes made for such tracks (you know, a few 'bumps' here and there) in them as well you know.... :-*

Track was great on Sunday!!  They turned off the sprinklers that were feeding into the corners, which let them dry up quite a bit.   Meanwhile, Saurday's sawdust blended well with the dirt.   Some of the turns at top of hills were loam city, and copping WFO roosts off the guns.  There seemed to be hardly any whoops appearing, and the other sprinklers killed off the dust.  I reckon it had a kind of "Trans-Ama" feel to it.
Heaps of riders never returned on Sunday, so there was as much track time as most could handle.

I loved the smooth uphills where you could pin it.   I liked the two long downhills, each time I survived them.   And - once I got used to that pair of bigger double-down airjumps, I actually looked forward to them.   I was only wishing I were young enough to ride hard, like those young kids on the Maicos!

Well done Drakey.   And thanks to Rod MacDonald and crew, for being out in that sun for us, all weekend.

No. Furthest thing from my mind. But if I was wanting to race an EVO or Pre 85 bike to be the "Australian Champion" of that class, I'd rather do it on a track that I could relate more to. In fact I'd wanna race more than three, three lap races to do it as well. More like seven 20 minute + a lap races over the three days to properly test man and machine (or should I say the shitters from the bikes that have been prepared).

The track was fine for my pre-78 bike, and was great on my pre-85 (enduro) bike - if next weekend was going to be the "Evo Nats", then you wouldn't have heard a peep from me about the track condition.
But the Nationals are going to include older bikes, so I'm raising the point now so the promoting club can choose to do something about it before the event... ;)

And I'm sure that racing on a perfectly smooth track wouldn't actually upset anyone.

I think it would be wise for the Preston Club, to have the pre 85 and pre 80 big bore classes off first on the program, for the simple reason, if the track sprinklers are going to be on and the first race is going to be pre65 class they will be bogging down alot and race will be slow and tuff for them, The track will need 5-7 races over it to dry it out.

I must disagree with you Roscoe, I thought the track was ruddy dispicable & not a fit place for man or machine. Why I saw some chaps spinning their rear knobbly & flinging a thing called loam  ??? ??? in the face of their fello competitors, how dispicable, mummy was aghast  ;D ;D & what are these new fandangle things on cnrs which I think they call berms & I will never come to grasps of this new fashion of getting both wheels of the ground at the same time, anyway, I must go down for tea, cucumber sandwiches I believe. I have never been a fan of the track at Broadford, I could almost go as far to say I hated it.  I rode it on Sunday and I didn't want to get off it. Running in that direction combined with the nice loamy soil I had a ball, if you put a wheel wrong in a rut it didn't matter you could just form a new line as its all soft. And as for traction out of the corners, Woohoo.

I loved it, well done.

Yeah, thats pretty much how I felt, I think pre 75's will struggle on a lot of tracks, but in my humble opinion Broadford was way better than Coff's.

My KDX that has never had a shock rebuild in it's life handled it okay, it never would have coped on the track of old.

Keep digging, you lot.

I'm one of the relatively few guys that didn't mind either Clarence or the Canberra super-cross track on a short travel bike.
I was one of the few to venture out on the Sunday at CD4.
I loved Sunday's HBBB vinduro track and honestly don't understand the people that complained about the ruts.
Even though I struggled with the big whooped downhill at Conondale, nobody heard a peep about it from me.
I'm not god's gift to MX, but I'm not a sook and I ride it as it comes.

But to talk it up as being 'all that and then some' when it was the most diabolically watered track I've ever ridden on, and when there are deep whoops in the landing area of downhill jumps, is just wide of the mark. In these conditions, the difference between being fast & competitive, and being thumped hard into the ground, is tiny.

Nobody has to agree with me, but it would be good if you could at least bother trying to understand the point I'm making.

Broadford for me, is one of the best and my most favoured tracks so I was keen to see what a fair amount of work and reversing of the track would do. The first shock was the $100 to get the bike on the track for a Sunday sessions. Is what it is I guess and I could have turned around and gone home on principle, but I clenched my teeth and emptied the wallet, however I can do 2 VIPER race meetings for the same $’s.

I struggled with the super sharp bog holes, worst when they are on a down hill and more so on the entry to the corner. They weren’t braking bumps, just an inordinate amount of water that turned into mud. I thought the hairpin left turn up the hill after travelling into the far back corner of the track was downright ridiculous. If you were pushed off the track going wide you have an almost sheer drop of 2 meters. Reversed it was never an issue as you entered the corner on the opposite side of the track.

On another corner I was pushed wide by a slower rider, no problem I thought, I’ll just run around on the infield and pop back on the track further down. It was at this point that I found a water erosion point that was 300/500 mm deep. Somehow I got over it but had I dropped into it I would have been in a whole world of hurt.

And the two things that really boiled my blood was a small minority of riders that used the riding sessions as practice for next weekend’s event and cared not for some of the riders on the track. Whilst I can deal with them, some of the people using the track don’t have a level of “Race Craft” and were no doubt intimidated, possibly put in danger by their actions. And lastly the speed at which some of the dickheads rode through the car park.

On the other side of the coin, the track flowed well and the new surface is awesome, particularly at the top of the hill, the jumps are old bike (and old body ;)) friendly and you wont actually ride 3 full laps with the reversal of the track when racing.

I think the organisers will have it nailed if they can sort the few shitty bog hole corners up.

Love that pic VMX....check out the spectators behind 224 and 592...GOLD  :D

I had a great time on sat and i didn't even ride!
The last time i was at Broadford was the '83 Mr Motocross final
Met motomaniac, and KB again and had a beer with him (thanks KB) and loved his collection of bikes, yzhilly and a few others on here....top people. The whole day just felt relaxed with some great looking bikes.

I was standing next to mcmuffin sorry (not sure of his real name :D) when he kicked over his Mugen 360 and snapped the kickstart lever clean off.

I have a lot of bike pics in the pits but it would take me ages to shrink the size of each (anyone know a quick way of u/l alot of pics in one hit?)
The complex looked great and we should all be happy that we still have a track to ride on and people to help run them.
The way the money hungry developers and goverment are going...WE ARE LUCKY with broadford.

Wow, what a great weekend. I travelled south with Jonesy for the HBBB not really knowing what to expect. We'd previously decided to concentrate on the dirt track section of the event to save us too many logisitical problems running from venue to venue. The track was well prepped and a ball to ride. The roll up of bikes was a tad less than I'd presumed but the variety was great. Because I was sharing the trailer with Alan I only took one bike, My 'trusty' old 350 Maico, while he took his Hagon Jawa and Weslake/BSA Metisse. We met up with fellow Kevlar Jake and his lovely wife Cathy who now live near Echuca in Victoria and ace photographer Bill Forsyth and stayed at the Broadford Motel.

It didn't take long for me to realise that I'd made the wrong decision on what bike to bring after starting the Maico on Saturday to discover a vibrating, farting and coughing mess. I immediately realised that there was something amiss and shut her down. After a bit of thought I now figure that the Yamaha big end has finally shit itself after 18 years of proud service. Luckily I've got all of the parts to fix her up sitting waiting in the cupboard so it's no big deal other than I wish I'd bought my B&S TM400 instead. I filled the void by doing some laps on Jakes YZ125E and Jonesys 500 Beeza Metisse and had a ball. Unfortunately another problem raised its ugly head in that the siezed right ankle makes it almost impossible to put my new boots on without another person manipulating the boot and someone wiping the tears from my eyes because of the pain involved and that the knee brace wasn't enough protection for my rooted left knee. I found it almost impossible to put my foot down while riding or to stand on the pegs. The ankle problem also made it hard to change gear on the right foot change Beeza. Notwithstanding my goober body pain......I had a hoot. It was nice to be back in the saddle. Hopefullty I'll have had my operations before CD7 .
Jonesy rode his usual smooth and rocket fast style but didn't like the MX track very much on his Metisse. I can't comment because I didn't ride it but from a spectator point of view, it sure looked OK. The organisation was superb, the vibe was unreal and the venue looked a treat. Full marks to Drakie who was running ragged but was by Sunday arvo relaxed enough to stat enjoying himself. It was great catching up with Hoony, YZhilly, Paul, Tim, GMC,Fatboy Shane and the many more forum guys who dropped into our pit for a yarn and to say g'day. My lack of walking ability prevented me doing too much cruuising of the MX pits but the guys I did talk to were great.
We'll be back.

it was a great day out. nice to catch up with some forum members and have a chat.
i really enjoyed hanging out at the dirt track. how good is it to see a 1928 Dt500 Douglas, Speedway Vincents, Harley flat tracker all circulating. the concept of getting all this old race iron out of sheds and circulating is a pisser.

Jimmy Ellis even took my bike for a spin around the MX track and i asked him for some feed back where i can improve things on the bike, he then proceeded to rattle specifically off more than i can remember from jetting ( pilot, clip and main) to suspension settings front and rear.

i have a funny story to tell.

Yzhilly and i were talking to Fatboyracing and his mate Thommo and they mentioned they were staying for the week at Broadford till the nats. we asked them what they were going to do for a week.

"oh were going for a drive"  was the reply so matter of fact like

"where" we asked

"Queensland"

obviously the Tassie guys are not scared to cross the 300kM radius force field barrier like us Victorians  ;)

Anyone get a pic of the Ammex? Or know anything about it?
I saw Gary Jones talking to a bloke that I presume was the owner, but figured that the owner was probably grilling Gary for all sorts of details, and didn't want to be interupted by me asking simple questions...

Great shots from the Dirt Track, I'm peee'd off now that I didn't make the trip down.
Next year for sure, if I pull my finger out and finish something off to ride.

Yep it was good as gold Saturday in the somewhat restricted time I had there. Ran into quite a few friends I know and revelled in competition bikes of all types  at    ....ALL.... the various disciplines tracks. Even had put my beloved 754 Pre75 sidecar together too display, (and take some willing citizens for a ride,,, only thing is they all got off after a short time and well um disappeared mumbling something like "you sidecar people are really very seriously warped ??? Nathan come back....
Enjoy the Super Rat manual Firko it is a fun and bit tongue in cheek for a genuine workshop book , Thank you Walter for all your tips and experienced insights re my rough old 754 , good luck to you and your passenger at the Nats. Glad you got on the tracks Sunday Geoff!  Blokes like the two mentioned preceding spend their working life making our bikes so much better, how they good must feel doing some riding for themselves;D
Of course the track marshals, safety flaggies, stewards and all the organisers are to be honoured and praised for their selfless commitment.
Anyhow back to Earth, my cameras SD card appears to be damaged as it cannot be read on three different computers >:( a couple of those little metal tabs are broken so I have no photos to share!! not even any of the dozens I took of my beasty.... ;) Cheers See yas about Tim754
