Title: Whats the most collectable big block Yamaha?
Post by: Davey Crocket on March 23, 2010, 10:03:19 pm
OK, lets do the tuning fork list...,      YZ360A,   YZ360B,    YZ465H,      MX400B,     YZ400F,     SC500 ;D... at least they built a full 500 pre 75. The rest I think are pretty ordinary, the only 2 bikes they built resembling last years works bikes where the A and B, then they lost the plot which showed in there World championship results which is kind of weird as their roadracing bikes where untouchable and showed in their results around the world.....oh for a ride on a TZ750. The thing is too ,that YOU-ANYBODY could walzt into your local Yamahaha dealer , plonk the doe-ray-me down and buy your favourite TZ whatever flavor you wanted...... couldnt buy a OW motocrosser though!!!

YZ360A, hands down.
Always rare, actually worked well, and quite exotic.

The 360B seems particularly popular in Australia because it is eligible for pre-75 here. They are clearly collectable bikes and I'd love one, but (internationally) lacks the 'competitive VMX race bike' string in its bow to be more collectable than the 360A.
The MX400 and YZ400F are in kinda the same boat (being more practical as VMX race bikes is countered by being much less sexy than both the YZ-A and YZ-B).

SC500 is a novelty, which makes it collectable - but its only a novelty which instantly limits it value.

So then you've got the 465H, which is hampered by not being known as the best race bike in its class (despite the fact that its a damn good bike). Nor does it have the mystique of the Maico 490 - so while the lovers of big Evo bikes are drawn in to Maico 490s like moths to a flame, the 465H is relatively ignored....

Heres a peice of useless information....YZ490 barrell is a direct copy of a Maico 490 (porting 100% copy), in fact you can put YZ sleeve into a Maico barrell, so how did Yamaha stuff it up?. Maybe there the engineers that got banished to China to make the chinkas!!. YZ490 was a peice of shit compaired to the RM, KX and CR. It's not very often that when the nips copy something they get it so wrong.

Also, about the MX400B, probably one of the most underated bikes out their, in 1975 they where the king, was the weapon of choice in the desert, won more motocross races than people give credit to, was raced by alot of pro's, more reliable than a Hills hoist and as far as eye candy goes, it was their also!!..... they lasted longer than an energiser battery, Firko knows... he had one (MX400B that is, he wore {whore} his vibrator out years ago ;D)

 ???
When was the first reed-valve Maico 490? I thought 1982/3, which would make it impossible for Yamaha to copy it for the 1982 model YZ490?

SC500  ;) :)

actually these days it would have to be XT/TT500's, the prices for those have gone through the roof in recent years. You wont pick one of those up for $600 anymore. So many people have either got one or are after one and they are pulling big dollars now.
Title: Re: Whats the most collectable big block Yamaha?

agreed Lieth,
the XT/TT500's are pulling pretty solid dollars and so they should.
when ever a good motor is up for discussion the TT/XT donk always finds its way into the conversation.
my sex appeal pick would be the 1979 YZ400F. 8)
i just loved the Hiekki Mikkola days :)
Barsby's YZ465 has me wanting one. that thing just turns so well...
it can hang it out wide and then cut to the inside at thought. :)
and the good old MX360 i reckon is pretty neat too.
it just needs a slimmer feul tank.

For me it would have to be WR500, only cause I raced one for two seasons and it was the only the only big two stroke i've had.

'82 on the GS model. '83 on the mx.
Maybe that's where they went so wrong?
Ah that quote from Rick Siemen regarding the fuel ratio for the YZ490 . 3 (?) parts sand to one part cement. That's gold!

Since YZM was mentioned, has anyone got a pic of the promotional poster of aircooled YZM500 from about 1982/3/4/ ?

the one i am thinking of is a poster that yamaha came out with in that era of a YZM500 aircooled with power valve it may have been a carlquist bike possibly. pic was take from the front angle back to rear of the righthand side of bike.

Maybe Lozza can give us the port timing specs for the 490 vibrater and the Maico, was told this on the weekend by Radar Cullen who would know more about engines than anyone on this forum.... now I've probably opened a can of worms!!!

You're really stretching the connection here John ;D. Yep I certainly owned a 400 B and fully agree that it was the hot ticket in the 500 class in 1975 (along with the the GP Husky). I certainly did love racing it but it wasn't long (6 months) before it became outclassed by newer and better stuff from Europe and was quickly sold off. In the meantime the old Maico I'd owned for five years prior to the MX-B is still is still in my shed today, still capable of winning races and doesn't vibrate . I've never understood or got involved in this "my bike is better than your bike" "Maicos (or Yamaha/Suzuki/Honda/Husky or whatever) are shit" discussions. I own Yamaha, Suzuki, Maico, Ducati,Honda and Benelli and have equal respect for them and for any other brand of bike. Lifes too short to keep laying shit on other peoples bikes of choice.

Somehow I think Radar may be having a bit of a lend here. Even if he is, the Maico came first so the argument goes out the window.

Nobody has mentioned Yamahas most successful big bore yet even though the one model has won more GPs than the rest put together.
Not many engines can make more than double their original HP without a g/box upgrade and be so reliable. You can give them bigger valves, bigger carbies, more stroke, everything you need and they go like buggery.
I'll leave it to you all to judge.

To true.........except for the Maico's have bridged exhaust/inlet the Yamaha single ports and the Yamaha has road race port timings and the Maico mx port timings, the Yamaha has useless auxilary transfers and the Maico's work perfectly. Maico sleeves are made to press out the YZ 490's are cast in.Pick a YZ 490 cylinder up and you'll see where they went wrong.

Yes, l am right, their was a big bum fight over it, yz 400 A, it looked the same as the yz or mx models 400 c, B, But the A was manufactured in 1974. And it is the only model eligilible.

No Dave. You're confusing two stories:

Story 1. Jody Someone got the YZ250B and YZ360B allowed in pre-75 racing. This was successful because there's Yamaha-published literature dated 1973, and the bikes were being raced in Australia in early-mid 1974 (ie: Before any 75 models were released). I believe that Australia is the only country in the world to recognise the YZ-Bs as pre-75 legal.

Story 2. Someone else tried to claim that they had a 1974 model MX400A, and that it should be pre-75 legal. This fell flat on its face because there's no evidence of such a bike existing. At best, the hopeful person probably owned a pre-production or an early production MX400B that was made in 1974 - but it doesn't matter because MX400s are designated 1975 models.

To recap:
Pre-75 legal bikes: YZ250A, YZ360A, YZ250B, YZ360B.
Not pre-75 legal bikes: YZ250C, YZ400C, MX250B, MX400B.
Bikes that don't exist: MX400A, YZ400A.

Thats correct Nathan, YZB's where all built in Feb 74, YZA's March 73. Most countries designate the B's as 75 models. Most Yamaha riders went from the YZB to racing the MXB when it came out in 75 as it was more refined and less fragile. I think the MXB parts might have been a bit cheaper too.

Well lfeel that if a bike is manufacture before 1975, it should be legal, regardless if it was built for the following year.

So, if a mx400A was built before 1975, then the flow on rule should also apply to this model, for etc mx400C.

Ray Harris owned the bike here in Geelong, l have see the bike at the time at his work shop, and he had the paperwork to back it up, and l also sure that too the time and l wish l had photo copied it at the time.
In 1974 easter weekend l was racing at the South Australia Titles at Acusa Park and another meeting same weekend at Keith. On the  same weekend Saturday my friends and l where looking over the new 1974 Yamaha YZ 250, 360 B on sale at Pitmans, they where on display outside, at the front of  Pitmans show room. Dave Basham was racing one that weekend and also Trevor Flood.

Whats the most collectable big block Yamaha?

Both the YZ360A and YZ360B are very collectable but the YZ360A would probably win out because of its history. Me, I like the YZ360B better, I just think its a very cool bike, but it would have looked better with the YZ360A sidecovers. I think it would've given it a more leaner werkys look. Thats just my opinion.

Australia and Canada, they where the first countries to receive the shippment of yz b models,  Out of all the Yamaha`s l feel the most collectable one`s are 1973 YZ 360 A, 1974 YZ 360 B.

Gday Dot, hey I know my memory is not great but I believe Trevor Flood was the first to race a YZ360B in Australia and it was at the Laurie Boulter at Atujara Park SA on the 25th of April 1974 Anzac Day. He had major trouble getting the bike off the docks in Melbourne the day before it's first outing. Once the right palms were greased he rushed the bike back to Yamaha HQ and roughly assembled it, threw it on the trailer and headed for Adelaide. He arrived in a cloud of smoke at the pub we were staying at just as we were leaving to go to the track on race day. Dave Basham rode a YZ360A and was very fast but Trevor Flood was in a class of his own on the new YZB. I spent most of the day in the local hospital after a major get off in practice but I hitched a ride back to the track in an ambulance just in time for the main race. We stayed in Adelaide for a few days and raced at Keyneton on the Sunday. It was very much an eye opener to watch Trevor completely strip down every nut and bolt of the new YZB and even stripped the engine and split the crank as he thought sand had got in through the air filter at the Atujara Park. The genuine spares kit he had was amazing with a new cylinder, complete crankshaft and expansion chamber as well as all the normal bearings gaskets, levers etc. He methodically reassembled it and we all went to Keyneton.  Gary Flood won the feature, Trevor Flood won the A grade and some other G. Flood won the B grade. So I may not be totally accurate but thats what I remember. Easter that year was about 10 days earlier and we all rode at Echuca.

I never raced Yamaha's much except I did have one of Trevor's YZ360B's for a little while but I couldn't come to grips with it. Probably couldn't ride it as fast as was needed with his setups. I did however buy a new YZ490 4 speeder when they first came out and to this day absolutley loved that bike. It was more like a bike bore European bike to ride than a Jap bike. I would really like to get hold of one again if anyone knows of one for sale no matter how rough.

I would really like to get hold of one again if anyone knows of one for sale no matter how rough.

I don't think that this is the poster that you are talking about, Hoony, but this is a good picture of the bike that you may be referring to . It is probably a bit off topic , because it is not a production bike, but it is still good to look at .

Man i struggle out there with pulling a carb down as the dust rols across what passes as pits. to be splitting cases out there in the grass, the guys a bloody  legend, hell i would have even paid to see that.

Hi Freakshow, I probably explained it badly, but what I meant was Trevor rebuilt that YZ360B in his mates shed that we comandeered in Adelaide between the Atujara Park race on Anzac day and three days latter at the Keyneton race meet. But yes he is a true legend.

That is pure eye candy.... makes those shitbox Honda's look like a back yard jobby!!!!. Where the hell did you find those pictures??, if you've got more, dont hold out on us.Wheres Worm's, Trev, you need to show the short one what a real 500 looks like, give em a leg up to get on a chair and put him on the right page, those Honda blokes are like trotters...... tripping around with their blinkers on. Tell him he's only aloud to look......no touching, definatly  no touching!!! ;D

I own a couple of open class yams , i find each bike great in its class in pre 70 , rt1 its not the best by a long shot but I love it . Pre 75 I have rt2mx and mx 360 both fun bikes . Pre 78 yzc 400 yzd 400 the c was a basket case and my 1st restro once you get pressure in the forks right great pulls like a tractor the d sweet to ride . My last big bore is a yzh 465 with 490 top end and boost bottle, its faster than I can ride .wish list bikes yza yzb yzf . just ride them who cares which is best get them out of the shed .
