Firko knows... he had one (MX400B that is, he wore {whore} his vibrator out years ago )
You're really stretching the connection here John ;D. Yep I certainly owned a 400 B and fully agree that it was the hot ticket in the 500 class in 1975 (along with the the GP Husky). I certainly did love racing it but it wasn't long (6 months) before it became outclassed by newer and better stuff from Europe and was quickly sold off. In the meantime the old Maico I'd owned for five years prior to the MX-B is still is still in my shed today, still capable of winning races and doesn't vibrate . I've never understood or got involved in this "my bike is better than your bike" "Maicos (or Yamaha/Suzuki/Honda/Husky or whatever) are shit" discussions. I own Yamaha, Suzuki, Maico, Ducati,Honda and Benelli and have equal respect for them and for any other brand of bike. Lifes too short to keep laying shit on other peoples bikes of choice.

YZ490 barrell is a direct copy of a Maico 490 (porting 100% copy)
Somehow I think Radar may be having a bit of a lend here. Even if he is, the Maico came first so the argument goes out the window.

Nobody has mentioned Yamahas most successful big bore yet even though the one model has won more GPs than the rest put together.
Not many engines can make more than double their original HP without a g/box upgrade and be so reliable. You can give them bigger valves, bigger carbies, more stroke, everything you need and they go like buggery.
I'll leave it to you all to judge.

point taken with XS650 twins and i totally agree to how robust the original design is, but i think we all know this thread was started as original MX based engine in mind.

Lesser minnions, such as myself have forged many a new trail where none previously existed, thanks to the wonderful steering and swingarm setup, and ball tearing tractor like power! ::)
Leyland Brothers? They cant hold a candle to the number of off-track exploits I've had on the wonderful ol' girl. :-[

Don`t for about the 1974 yz 400 A, which is the only one eligible to race pre75.

Heres a peice of useless information....YZ490 barrell is a direct copy of a Maico 490 (porting 100% copy), in fact you can put YZ sleeve into a Maico barrell, so how did Yamaha stuff it up?.

To true.........except for the Maico's have bridged exhaust/inlet the Yamaha single ports and the Yamaha has road race port timings and the Maico mx port timings, the Yamaha has useless auxilary transfers and the Maico's work perfectly. Maico sleeves are made to press out the YZ 490's are cast in.Pick a YZ 490 cylinder up and you'll see where they went wrong.

Yes, l am right, their was a big bum fight over it, yz 400 A, it looked the same as the yz or mx models 400 c, B, But the A was manufactured in 1974. And it is the only model eligilible.
