Yes, l an right, their was a big bum fight over it, yz 400 A, it looked the same as the yz or mx models 400 c, B, But the A was manufactured in 1974. And it is the only model eligilible.

Got any Pics Dave , there must be pics if there was a big bum fight  ;)

No Dave. You're confusing two stories:

Story 1. Jody Someone got the YZ250B and YZ360B allowed in pre-75 racing. This was successful because there's Yamaha-published literature dated 1973, and the bikes were being raced in Australia in early-mid 1974 (ie: Before any 75 models were released). I believe that Australia is the only country in the world to recognise the YZ-Bs as pre-75 legal.

Story 2. Someone else tried to claim that they had a 1974 model MX400A, and that it should be pre-75 legal. This fell flat on its face because there's no evidence of such a bike existing. At best, the hopeful person probably owned a pre-production or an early production MX400B that was made in 1974 - but it doesn't matter because MX400s are designated 1975 models.

To recap:
Pre-75 legal bikes: YZ250A, YZ360A, YZ250B, YZ360B.
Not pre-75 legal bikes: YZ250C, YZ400C, MX250B, MX400B.
Bikes that don't exist: MX400A, YZ400A.

The good thing about telling the truth is that you don't have to remember what you said.

Thats correct Nathan, YZB's where all built in Feb 74, YZA's March 73. Most countries designate the B's as 75 models. Most Yamaha riders went from the YZB to racing the MXB when it came out in 75 as it was more refined and less fragile. I think the MXB parts might have been a bit cheaper too.

Well lfeel that if a bike is manufacture before 1975, it should be legal, regardless if it was built for the following year.

So, if a mx400A was built before 1975, then the flow on rule should also apply to this model, for etc mx400C.

Ray Harris owned the bike here in Geelong, l have see the bike at the time at his work shop, and he had the paperwork to back it up, and l also sure that too the time and l wish l had photo copied it at the time.
In 1974 easter weekend l was racing at the South Australia Titles at Acusa Park and another meeting same weekend at Keith. On the  same weekend Saturday my friends and l where looking over the new 1974 Yamaha YZ 250, 360 B on sale at Pitmans, they where on display outside, at the front of  Pitmans show room. Dave Basham was racing one that weekend and also Trevor Flood.

Whats the most collectable big block Yamaha?

Both the YZ360A and YZ360B are very collectable but the YZ360A would probably win out because of its history. Me, I like the YZ360B better, I just think its a very cool bike, but it would have looked better with the YZ360A sidecovers. I think it would've given it a more leaner werkys look. Thats just my opinion.

Australia and Canada, they where the first countries to receive the shippment of yz b models,  Out of all the Yamaha`s l feel the most collectable one`s are 1973 YZ 360 A, 1974 YZ 360 B.

Gday Dot, hey I know my memory is not great but I believe Trevor Flood was the first to race a YZ360B in Australia and it was at the Laurie Boulter at Atujara Park SA on the 25th of April 1974 Anzac Day. He had major trouble getting the bike off the docks in Melbourne the day before it's first outing. Once the right palms were greased he rushed the bike back to Yamaha HQ and roughly assembled it, threw it on the trailer and headed for Adelaide. He arrived in a cloud of smoke at the pub we were staying at just as we were leaving to go to the track on race day. Dave Basham rode a YZ360A and was very fast but Trevor Flood was in a class of his own on the new YZB. I spent most of the day in the local hospital after a major get off in practice but I hitched a ride back to the track in an ambulance just in time for the main race. We stayed in Adelaide for a few days and raced at Keyneton on the Sunday. It was very much an eye opener to watch Trevor completely strip down every nut and bolt of the new YZB and even stripped the engine and split the crank as he thought sand had got in through the air filter at the Atujara Park. The genuine spares kit he had was amazing with a new cylinder, complete crankshaft and expansion chamber as well as all the normal bearings gaskets, levers etc. He methodically reassembled it and we all went to Keyneton.  Gary Flood won the feature, Trevor Flood won the A grade and some other G. Flood won the B grade. So I may not be totally accurate but thats what I remember. Easter that year was about 10 days earlier and we all rode at Echuca.

Regards Stan.
