Title: memories
Post by: monaro308 on November 13, 2009, 07:12:32 pm
Hi all,i found this pic going through some paper work the other night.
I loved this bike as it was stone reliable for the 9 years i had it.
Not one single thing ever let me down apart from a clogged muffler.
When repacked it was like a new bike again.

I bought it when i was 17 after trading in my YZ80H in 1982 @Peter Stevens in Dandenong.
Went in for my P's @Doveton RTA still with my knobbie tyres @17/9months and was told to come back with the right tyres by 2PM
Bought 2 tyres @ Foster st M/C wreckers and returned to the RTA in the arvo.
Instructor watched me go around the block from the front of the RTA and gave me my license.
Knobbies back on that night and ridden just about everyday to and from work for over 1 year until i bothered to get my car license and then used on nice days to and from work for the next 8 years.

Of course the weekends were spent riding it at governor rd @braeside,rosebud track, frankston track and the sneaky break-ins @ Boral quarry in cranbourne.
Most other times was spent in the Noojee State forest where this pic was taken i think in 1983.

Even today i still miss the bike ALOT.
Back into riding this past year on my '06WR450F and rebuilding an RM125C and maybe my other RM125T.
I still love my 2 strokes and always will.

cheers...Mario

G'day Mario,

I can relate to nearly all of what you said as i lived in the same area and rode the same tracks.

have you ever been a member of the Dandenong Motorcycle club (senior club meetings at keysborough hall and then the club rooms in Paul Crt) ?

Hey Mario , great little bit of history reading there.I rode most of those place's around that era.Was a Rosebud member all though the 80's/90's. Maybe we knew each other back then. Do you remember any of the Guys from back then?

Nice Mario what capacity was it i would reckon it would have to have been 175 or 250 if you were just getting your license I have a couple PE's I just love them because my 400t dad got in the late 80's it was registered once but we have had so much fun over the years. One day when I was little dad did a mono with me sitting on the tank and he fell off I stayed on and held on to the handle bars and landed but stayed upright dad had to chase the bike and just caught it in time before it fell it use to really scare me but I had always wanted to ride it myself. When I was 13 or 14  I got on it and rid it around and it is so much fun whether I ride up and down my driveway or through the bush they are still about have you thought of getting one again thanks, Michael. :)

DOH !!.....Sorry guys '81 PE175X.
The first time i went to pay the rego,i got the third degree on how did P/stevens sell a regoed bike to an unlicensed/under aged person.....i just said ask them not me!
I still have the spare rego plate today.
Hoony,no funnily enough i wanted to join Dandy MC when i had the YZ80F/H but i lived in Nth Dandy and it was a good 3-5km walk for me as i had no one to take me.I used to ride the pushie to watch though.
Motomaniac,i don't think i would remember who was who then as i used to tag along with a couple of mates that were members back then.

I used to work with one of them back in the 80's but lost contact with him around the early 90's.
His name is Gary Cornthwaite and was a C or B grade MX rider and he even did some riding schools with Stephen Gall in the mid 80's here and a trip to the states as well.
This was Broadford Rd 1 MR.MX 1984.

His brother was Andrew and he was an A grader. This is from the 1983 Mr.MX final @ Broadford.

Gary used to mix with Peter Whitington and got to know more people after the schools,eg Leisk,Dack, etc.
Another one i knew/worked with was Ross McKay.I think they both had time @ Trail & Track magazine,i know Pete did the mini MXers in his early days.

I got introduced to Gally at the final 83 Mr.Motocross @ Broadford even if it was just a quick hello, but it made my day as he was/still is my hero.....a true gentleman.....infact they all were back then....Gunter,Moates,Vandenberg,Leisk,Jimmy Ellis etc.
The "Goof" blitzed that day.

Frosty...PE in the shed oneday soon for sure  ;) At the same time i bought the RM,a PE175T was for sale and i was sooo close to saying yes but my mind was leaning toward the RM but my heart still wants the PE175X i had.It will happen when one pops up. I'd love a 175 floater also.

Am i boring you all yet? I hope not ;D
Cheers all....Mario

Not boring at all Mario. Just total Bullshit! Gary is my longtime best Mate and riding Buddy.
You probably lost contact with him after he got married .He moved to Hampton Park but is now living in Pearcedale with his second wife.
I know Pete too but haven't seen him for ages.He came out of retirement in the early 90's and rode Gary's old CR500 in the Ozzie titles at Traralgon .He hadnt trained or ridin much for years but got 7th overall against a stacked field with Glen Bell  and co.

Andrew is still riding too but not as much , his Son Jed  is a good rider and won his class in the Vic offroad champs a year or two ago.

I used to ride alot with those Guys and Mal Watson at the sand pits in Crannie.

I can tell by my number that that program is from 1983 .Lot of good riders there .I remember most. Im number 248 at the bottom.
I recognise most the names in both heats - alot of Guys from Tassie who I knew - so Im thinking the meeting was at Wontaggi because they came over for that one.

I'll tell Gary about you.
Jez small world

Actually I think I remember you now coming out to practice with us at the pits or maybe it was Pound rd in HAMPTONPARK.
So where are you at now Man?
Title: Re: memories
Post by: monaro308 on November 13, 2009, 11:43:47 pm
NO F...ING WAY!
You are correct,i'd been to Gary's place in Hampton park a couple of times,(his 1st wife bred cats) then they parted ways and i think he got a transfer at work and i went another way and lost contact.
I've been in Seaford for the last 4 years (around the corner from his parents in ballarto rd carrum downs)if they are still there.
I also go through Pearcedale EVERYDAY for the last 4 1/2 years to work in Lang Lang!

Holy cow i'm hopeless with names,i might remember the faces but names go over my head.
Pound rd...i never rode there, sandpits yeah,we would leave from Andrew's place in Crannie and ride to the sand pits where the hole in the fence was  ;D

So...married a potato peeler  again.....FOOL :D
He is a top bloke and good luck to him.
Use that word "practice" loosely as i was a VERY average rider then as i still am now.(just ask Gary!)
Just got back into riding....well mostly falling.... this year and been riding at Rokeby,Bluerock dam and just joined Frankston again to learn how to stop falling over the bars and following ruts...i'm a shocker on the MX track and stick to the little loop track to save me from the embarrassment that i am.
I knew back then how bad i was but i enjoyed it.Now i know how bad i am...but enjoying it again, but
jeez these 4strokes are top heavy for a 70kg 5ft6 mug like me.....might go to a KTM300 2 banger to save my bung left wrist and numbing left arm (something i need to sort out as it's starting to get me down physically)
Thanks Moto...you made my night!
I'll leave my email addy to forward on if you don't mind.
Cheers....mario

Hey Ross ,I think we've meet too.I raced at Bryant Park and Hillwood in the 80's.I got a picture around from the local paper somewhere with Myself,GrantCramer,Andrew Turner and Troy Penny from 1981.
If you are the guy who had the mugen kitted CR250RA I def remember you.I had the same bike with a modded swingarm and Ohlins on the back.I had the big cartwheEl at the end of the straight with the guy on the KX420 , Micheal Cahlaher or callahway or something.

I knew the Brickhills, top people same as the Savilles in Smithton.
Greatdays they were.

Hey Moto, the guy was Michael Kellerher it think.

i raced at the Smithton Bryant Park track every easter from 1984 - 1989 and have video of some of these events, i Never met brothers Ian & Ross, but i knew Ray and his parents quite well (Fran & John) and the Savilles very well as we always stayed with them and they stayed with me on a few occasions when they came to Melbourne.

Matthew Turner (VIPER Member 1988 CR500) was a top junior back then and i organised/assisted the Tassie boys over for the 2 day Bill Brown when I was DMCC Sports Secretary for a few years. yes they were great days and i can't believe it has been 20 years since the last Easter 2000 i did.

What years did you and Smaley go over? how did you find out about it? i went with Bruce Linsdell after taking to Smaley in 83'
Title: Re: memories
Post by: motomaniac on November 14, 2009, 11:03:19 am
Thanks Hoony , yer it was Micheal Kellerher. He was a good rider but I was on it that weekend and beat him.
I first went in 79 ,missed 80 when Smaleys RM got stolen , 81 - won C grade , 82 and 83 - got second in B grade .84 I went to Tas but not to race .I had the smashed wrist and just went to visit Deb and Blue Ried. Blue and I climbed Cradle mountain.
Then I didnt go again until 89.
It was ureal, a few of us lobbed at Jeff and Mary's when we got to Smithton .Noone was even home then when everyone turned up they gave us such a welcome.I thought that maybe I would have been forgotten after 5 years but someone hey Brent where were you last year?

I found out about it when I meet Smaley riding at Grantville in 78 .It was his idea.He went to Tassie just before that on his Honeymoon and got everyone interested and pretty much organised the whole thing that first year. Other Guys that went that year were Darren McMullen,Tony Leach - cant remember everyone .Grant Cramer and Sandy Richardson also went but not part of our group. In 81 Trev Brookes also went with Sandy and Grant. About 82 or 83 guys like Martin Douglas and Steve Airey from Frankston started coming over also. After that well you know from 84 on.
Hah I just remembered - how was the Rex and Brent duell of 89!! Haha

Your duells with Rex in late 80's are legendary, you 2 were very close as riders and always end up racing each other as i recall. How's that CR250RG coming along?

The RG is the line behind a few other bikes. I did start it and noticed that the bars were outta whack with the wheel but the bars weren't bent ??? It was the bar clamps -- Twist and shout musta had some get off- so I changed them but thats about all. One Day :)

Jeez there are some good memories in some of the names on those three pages, especially the last two. I see my old mate Gordon Bell who rode for Huskys for Hans Apengren and went on to become an elite level triathlete, Brooke Flanagan who later became a top enduro rider (where is he now?), Greg Cady who did a bit of VMX in the early days with his ex Aussie Dirt Track Champ brother Mick and a lot more including Andy Caldecott. Look at the number fast guys on the third page...You don't get star studded fields like that any more.

Thanks Moto.....Vance is a name that i do remember!
Someone owned a Holden tonner or ute and (who didn't) i think a datto ute or tray.
But yeah Vance's name is one for sure.
Always had the PE175 and an '87 KX250 the last time i saw Gary (what a fantastic motor for that year)Gary rode it once and almost compared the bottom end to his CR480/500 i think he had on that day.Anyone who has ridden an '87 KX250 would know what i mean....it was that good and would love it as an enduro donk.
Got his address now and will chase him up (thanks moto)

You are right Firko you don't see fields of names like that anymore. It was a great era for MX.

Here i was thinking of posting what i thought was a meaningless photo of my PE175 and 3 pages just to show an old lost mates name!

Glad you all have in some ways been a part of that era,i was just a spectator dreaming of even being anywhere near being a competitor.....but i loved watching MX then and being a casual rider.
I can put up more photos of the rider lists from the 3 programs i have kept depending on how many pics i'm allowed to post up....it might jig a few more memories for you all.

It really is a small world  ;D ;D

cheers....Mario

yep MM - that was me - Mugen kitted CR250R - had that in 81 I think it was and onto an RM250Z for 82 which was my last year.  Smithon Easter meet was always the best and biggest event of the year and the locals down there - of course the Savilles, McKays and Jones - made it like a second home.  I think the best I ever did was a 3rd in B grade - and I remember Michael kelleher as well.  If I also remember well (coz it was a long time back) Andrew Turner was seriously fast - when in the juniors at the Australian Championships at Symmons Plains he finished a very close second to Jeff Leisk.

Ha - small world - Hoony and I have emailed about the Easter meet a couple of times.

I was one of Tassie boys, the guys you have been talking about were all my mates, you mainlanders used to come over every Easter and make us A grade Tassie riders look very B grade taking all the prize money home with you.

I actually got into the vintage scene up here in Qld after a thirty year break by bumping into Andrew Bailey who used to come over with Grant Cramer, Armstrong and Co. at a BMMC VMX meeting an got sucked back into it all again.

Re: the Aus titles at Simmons plains I raced there and could not believe how fast Leisky was in the mud. Have some photos of Gally's works bike that he rode that weekend as well. Bently Omant (Tassie) grabbed the holeshole in the first race and led for the first lap and a half... Whoo HOO

Actuall bought my first VMX bike off John Gourlay and had it sent up to QLD, John has nearly completed putting a 83 250YZ together, trying to get him to come to Broadford next year..

It's amazing reading this, i was in the Army and posted to Melbourne 83-85, lived at Doveton in Almond Drive below the swimming Pool.  Played indoor cricket at dandenong (Infamous Dandenong Deroes), went to olympic park I think 83, watch leisky destroy everyone first time I every saw someone take a double.  83 and 84 borrowed an 11 x 11 tent (from army) and camped up the top of the hill on saturday night (was not supposed to be there!!lol)to watch Mr Motocross (can't remember if both Mr Motocross was a little bit under the weather) at Broadford.  1985-1987 posted to Devonport Tassie, went to several events in Smithton, damn it's a small world

I was talking with Andrew about that trip down the beach the other day at the Sunny Corner trail bike ride. Still remember seeing Grant Cramer on the inside line down that main straight on the tires...... smoothest rider I remember seeing at the time... Do you remember a local rider called Neville Daws? He was mad...... out of shape most of time... he used to create havic for as long as he could with you mainlanders and after he was dropped he would wait for you to lap him and do it all over again. Dont think you guys were to impressed... ;)

Unfortunalty Neville was killed in car accident in Stanley I think it was a couple of years later, always remember him though. RIP

RIP

Scott

Scott,

I dont remember him I spent too much time fixing punctures, the trip down the beach was probably the funniest couple of days I have ever had,

I dont think that Nev rode in 80 or 81 (might be wrong) he had an RM400in 79.My mate showed me the bridge that Nev and his mates  missed just the other side of Stanley. It would have been 80 or 81 that he was killed.I reckon.Ross might know.

Yeah must have been 79, Think he rode a 400C ... he was a Suzuki man through and through.

Remember being with him one morning (fricken freeezing) over that Easter, he had old ute of some sort.... Revved it flat out from cold to get the heater working. Thought the utes motor would blow before we got warm.. Like I said .....Mad..... Good memories

Neville was a race mate of mine and we were very close with his family also - was absolutely devastated when I was told of the crash.  Yep he was one of those riders who couldn't look after a bike but could ride the wheels off it.  He told me a funny story one day whereby in the "old" days he was riding his MX bike in town - cops started chasing him and being a small town then they knew who it was.  He did a short cut home and "threw" the bike on the ground all hot and stinky and smoking.  Cops pulled up couple of minutes later and here's Nev sitting on the front step going "how can I help you" with a look of innocence on his face  ;D  Yep - Suzuki through and through.  ANother guy very similar to him also from that era and Suzuki mounted was Peter Kay - does that ring a bell?

Peter Kay... Absolutley remember the name did not know him as well.... He was more Kevin Roach, Robby Scollier??, Chris Graetz, Shane Woods, Murray Seabrook vintage

There also was a great guy from Stanely Peter McKay who worked in the mines as a maintenence electrician, he rode Honda's very well. He and I had the first 78 CR250R's in Tassie kitted with fox shocks. Ive got a couple of old photos from Symmons plains if I can work out how to post them I will put them up.

Slawesy - we must know each other.  Peter McKay and Bentley Omant were the number 1 and 2 guys in Tassie (used to swap in various classes).  Peter and I rode for Lloyd Campbell Honda (no relation ;D) in Burnie = Peter was A Grade and I only ever made B grade.  We had some of the first 78 Red Devils - still have photos also but at home.  Pete caused a bit of a stir because Honda didn't have an open class bike then he rode a Suzuki 400!!!!  He was seriously quick.  Yep Shane Woods, Robbie Scollier and Kevin Roach were all just finishing as I started (Kevin married one of the Saville girls) and Peter Kay had a couple of years left and ended up being sponsored by John Humphries Motorcycles.  You would also know Craig Jones then - number #64?

They were awesome times for me - I rode from 78 to 82 - 78 CR250, 80 CR250 (and then Mugen kitted) and then finished with an 82 RM250 - all with the Circular Head Motorcycle club.  ;D

Not smart enough to get the images working so here is a hyperlink to the one I tried to post..

Though you might like to see my CR brand new.. I got mine from Lloyd Campbell Launceston, my uncle was the mechanic for them.. note the tee shirt I'm wearing ;), with my best mate at the time, he was the other go fast guy in Tassie with Bently and Pete... Lyndon Reynolds.

From left to right. Me #9, Bently Omant#2, John Gourlay #1, Pete McKay #27 The rest are names I cannot remember ATM except Paul Brickhill #41

Thats right John, they lived on the coast for a year or so. They were running around in a bedford truck/van they converted to go racing.

no not me - I raced 57 and then 7 for numbers.  Scott boots eh!  I can remember getting my first set of those from a Yamaha store on Elizabeth street I think it was up near Elizabeth College on the way out to Glenorchy - that wasn't Southern Mc's was it?

I remember Lyndon - had a big off at one of the Easter meets and dad was the first aid officer that treated him.  Another one of those bloody STMCA boys!!!!

Are you still in Tassie - racing with Fatboy?  Do your remember Peter Willoughby - KTM 495?

Hay Rossco,
Beleive it or not Peter Willoughby still races down here he is bike 124 and races a very fast tt 500 and he also has a super fast Xl 350 you can see him in the picts that Bazza posted from when he was down here. He still beats most of us and he is only a young 60 years old.I have been racing him for about 10years or more and have only beaten him with out him falling off 3 times maybe 4 and we have raced maybe 300 times.
I do have some old picts some were of the old days at smithton and hillwood
slawsey has some great picts I had a look at them when I was at his house in Brisbane after the Nats this year.

I never was allowed to race mx when I was young (mum was scared)I didnt get my first bike until I was about 13/14years old but I did have a mini bike with a lawn mower motor in it when I was a little tacker( I was little once).

Cheers
Fatboy

Might have been Troy Penny, he ended up riding with Mick Kellaher for Max Stephens after riding for Southern Motorcycles (yamaha) for years. Actually on second thoughts it may have even been Lyndon Reynolds. (I had left Tassie by then)

No mate, settled up here in the sunny QLD, met Fatboy and a couple of the lads from Tassie at the Nationals this year it was unreal talking with the boys about the old days and the names that I had forgotten about. Pete McCormack one of the guys, said to drop in when I'm next down there and go riding with them, hoping to keep him to that.

Pete Willoughby ??  Sorta remember the name although the only guy I new at that time riding a KTM was a guy I new only as "possum" who worked for Telstra at the time.

Yeah that was Southern Motorcycles, I liked the plastic boots, had a pair of Heckles originally (Gaston Rahier wore them I think) then had several pairs of Scott boots. Actually have the new Scotts at the moment.. see below at CD6

I cannot get over what a small world it is.
