this ones for a mate.

he has a 2002 Husky WR250 that is fouling plugs on trail rides. its fine when the tracks are open and flowing, but as soon as it gets tight and twisty and you can't open the throttle up it fouls plugs after about 20mins. plugs are wet and oily.  bike runs strong when reved doesn't miss at all and does not blow any smoke. oil ratio is 40:1 Motorex, its been happening on the last 4 rides so cannot be dodgy fuel as fuel was fresh each time.

what he has checked.

carb all ok.
air leaks from magneto side ok. would appear not to be a gearbox side main seal as it does not blow smoke and pulls hard when reved.
reeds ok
no coolant leaks

what we assume its not

electrics as its very easy to start, runs well and will pull 140Kmh in top gear (surely that a good sign of healthy electrics)
piston/bore, as had a rebuilt top and bottom end about 6 rides ago, no problem till recently



Any clues guys?

He has had the bike since new in 2002 RossMeister, only just started doing this.

that will teach him to buy a Hucking Pusky  :D

Is it running ok down low and then fouling or running like the total true puss bucket that it is and then fouling?  :-\

A too cold a plug, drop to an 8 heat range if he's running a 9.

 its running good down low and fouls after time, when you get to a area when you can open it up like a fire break or road and give it the berries it does not clear and will foul.

standard heat range is 9 i think,  he ran out of spare plugs when i was with him and we used a new 8 from my spare for the KTM, it fouled after time as well.

Nice bikes, v high strung.
change the engine seals and put a kit through the carb and check/change any induction rubber parts.

 Do  plug chop, i think its sucking air

it will be the ignition for sure
common on 250s and 360s
usuall first sign is fouling plugs
stator faulty
forget about how it has spark and starts
that will be the problemo ;)

G'day Russell,

how can you be so sure about the ignition, is it a common fault with huskies or have you had a similar problem on other bikes?

is it a weak spark at low revs problem and stator insulation breaking down?

thats exactly what it is and i have struck this
on 250 and 360 huskys
pull of the stator flywheel cdi and coil
send it all to bert at rewinds in vicco
he can test the whole system for a good price
then fix it if it is needed ;)

This is quite similar to the way my WR360 died. Sometimes it would run like a rocket, other times it would just flame-out for no apparent reason.
Always started easily, up until it really dropped its guts...

EVERYONE said "Yep, its the stator" when I told them the symptoms.

i used to use  jack at city auto electrics in coburg
he was very good but he has got a bit expensive
charged me $400
to rewind a canam stator ::)

who do you use michael
