Yep Leith, you're bang on with the backing plate and the slot used is nearest to the hole for the cam spindle (strange having two slots in the plate?)

The slot is 15.8mm wide and curiously the lug welded on the slider is only 12.4mm (1/2" in the old speak so maybe it was a convenient off cut) I suspect there may be a slight amount of clearance there but who knows - when mounted the lug and the slot may be mis-aligned so there is less play.

The slider must have been welded well enough as there is no binding on the staunchion and although it isn't the neatest welding around it is quite OK.

The 1.3mm that has to be bored out of the triples, while it may work does leave them a bit on the lean side but I will defer to the experts here. For my money I would adapt the brakes rather than the forks just to be on the safe side though so long as a good welder is available and keeps the front end mostly Maico.

Hope this helps

I made an adapter to fit a Yamaha front brake to a Maico about 30 years ago and still use a more refined version of it today when I switch to my 19" Yamaha hubbed dirt track front wheel. If you PM me with your contact details Mr Maico  I can send you a template or..I'll bring it to CD6 and you can have a squiz at it. It fits the slot in the early MX/YZ conical hub backing plate...dunno about later applications.

I dug out the offending fork leg as seen in the pics Paul posted and had a fiddle on the bench with it along with the KTM backing plate and all looked good. I then went a step further and offered up a 465 G TLS backing plate and that looked even better.

What I intend doing in the next week or so is stop over at my friendly neighbourhood welder and get his take on the best way to weld on a lug on a spare leg without risking damage. Perhaps a length of solid bar inside say .025mm less in diameter to hold the distortion to a minimum?

Work in progress

Sneak into your mates garage on a Saturday night. Cleverly graft the Maico front brake to his bike whilst he sleeps. The next day, position yourself with camera at the end of the start straight. Take photo of said friend sailing through berm/fence/spectators and send to local paper to make the second page.  ;)
