Ok this is what I’ve found in the book Trail bikes & Motorcross ISBN 0-86272-416-3
There are several different photos throughout the book at different locations around the same track
These ones are the first corner of a Camel motorcross race and the only one showing Suzukis
I date the race to be around 83 or 84
Black numbers on yellow plates means 500cc race
Rider 63 is riding a CR 500. I can clearly see this on a side on shot elsewhere in the book. Also I have identified several other 500 cc bikes such as KTM 495 and Husky 500 so I could safely say it’s a 500cc race.
I think it’s in Europe somewhere as a lot of people are wearing M.Robert and Sinisalo gear and many bikes have Renthal bars and Acerbis front fenders. In some shots I could read the riders names on the back of their pants and they are German or European names.
The bike we’re looking at is bike number 2 which is second into the corner. Looks to be water cooled, looks as if the pipe bends back behind a radiator. Also has vented front plate. I think bike 2 and 12 are the same bikes if you compare the side plates. They have something written on the seat but I can’t read it. They look like works style Suzuki plates. Also bike 9 (air cooled) seems to have works style number plates. Ive looked at normal RMs and the mounting holes are in different locations.
Preston Petty Tony D front fenders on these suzuki’s also indicate these are most likely works bikes.
So that’s what I’ve found. I’m pretty confident bike 2 is a water cooled works 500 Suzuki RN. I’m sure someone out there can tell us exactly who riders 2, 12 and 9 are!
