twin leading shoe front brake
« on: March 10, 2009, 06:49:20 pm »
What Models of suzukis had twin leading shoe brakes? was it only the 84 RM 125/250/500?

i have seen this photo which is a 81 PE 250 and it has this brake set up which obviously is not standard. the hub looks like it is the original
PE hub but it might be RM 250/400 N/T but the hook on the axle suggests to me its still the original 12mm PE axle so hub probably is too.
its a bit hard to tell if this is some how a modifed PE brake plate or its a RM N/T brake plate.i have looked at my PE plate and the position of the
cam but it doesnt look the same as this photo and i dont see the speedo cable comming out the top, so maybe this is a modifed RM 250/400 N/T
brake plate in the PE hub which of course would require a sleeve to reduce from 15mm to 12mm. I wouldnt mind doing the same thing but it would be good to be able to do it using suzuki parts or work out how this one is done. Do any late model DR 500's have twin leading shoe front brake?

just did some looking and im very sure its not a modifed PE brake plate. Maybe its a off a TS 250 or DR/SP?

and im trying to find left side photos of some RM's. every brochure i have is of the right side!

looking at this pic. i think i can see a part where the speedo cable would come out the bottom, so that rules out it being a modified rear brake plate i reckon. its not looing like anything TS/DR/RM either so far. Maybe its a Yamaha plate? it certainly looks to be an un modifed plate apart from maybe the second pivot. It has that over laped edge on the bottom of the hub edge and thats in the normal place. i cant think of any suzuki that has a plate like this though and has the speedo cable out the bottom. road bike brake plate maybe?

Hey LWC,
The 83 RM250/465 had a twin leading shoe brake. It had the brake cable where the outer casing stopped at the top of the fork and the inner cable continued down to the actuating lever.

The 84 RM125/250/465 had a slightly different setup where the backing plate was basically identical except that the outer cable extended all the way, and attached, to the backing plate. The linkages, brake shoes etc were the same as the 83.

They made the change because you could snag the 83 version on anything and it applied the brake. Not their most considered design.

The photo you attached is weird. The linkage looks like it has been flipped over. It is certainly not the correct hub. Very strange - somebody has gone to a lot of trouble.

The twin leader has a different  bigger spindle diameter and is exclusive to the 4 bolt clamp forks [ Maico copy] of 38 and 43mm.
Originally it was for the Open class RM and there were two versions of hub. The first had the cable stop on the fork legs. Later versions were more conventional, and the unit percolated down through the capacities before being superceeded by the disc. It used the same hub as the first monoshock RM125. I've got the brake on my DR400
I have to say it's not a whole lot better than the original
I don't think it was ever original equipment on the DR500.
The late monoshock PE175 had, in at least some markets, 38mm forks that would accept this brake, though I think the UK PE kept with the old style 36mm legs and wasn't compatable.

TS250 of '69/'70 had the twin leader and while this one looks from the same era I'd say it's not TS250. Early GT185 had a twin leader as well but they used a torque arm to secure it to the forks instead of a lug. There'd be others but it would have to have come from something sub 250cc I would imagine as T305's and stuff were larger diameter. Maybe yamaha?

thanks for that info. i looked at alpha sports and the RM plates look totally different. The hub is correct PE, well it at least looks correct but the brake plate isnt. This is really puzzling me but im determined to work out what it is.

all PE 175 floaters had 38mm forks 82-84. if UK kept 36mm thats news to me.

i think i will follow up Docs idea and check out some early road bike stuff on alpha sports although many of their parts diagrames are bloody hard to read and the scans are quite poor. i know its not T500 as they had a much larger brake/hub. The steel levers/pivots also indicates its something old from the 70's. The PE 250/400 hub takes a 160mm dia set of shoes so it must be something that just drops in.

this looks close but its still not the same.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1973-Suzuki-GT-185-Rear-Brake-Assembly_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQ_trksidZp3286Q2em20Q2el1116QQitemZ150308563458QQptZMotorcyclesQ5fPartsQ5fAccessories

just looked at EBC, SBS, Goodridge brake books but none list any of these models

Part # = 54410-08100
Part Description = SHOE,BRAKE
Model Count = 3
GT185K 1973
TS250-2 1970
TS250 1969

well they list 73 GT185 but they say 73 has disc pads ???

one other thing ive noticed is that the lever brake cam ( part 6 in diagram) is a lot shorter than the one int the 'Photo' above so it might not be the brake
plate.

EBC says the PE has 150mm brake shoes, i thought they were 160

this is suposedly off a 69 TS 250 but it doesnt quite look the same as above, actually its not, notice how it doesnt have the over hand lip on the bottom half. So i think i can rule out 69 TS 250 then. it looks close though. Does anyone know the brake shoe diameter of this model? i cant find any brake listing that has them

maybe its a modifed  74 TS 185 plate?

when i said modified TS 185 plate i ment the one on the PE in my first post. I am trying my best to get a better photo of the one on that PE. The onwer cant tell me much other than he got it from a wreckers and it bolted right in with no mods.

ok so far im pretty sure its not off these as the brake plates on these dont have the over hang/lip over the bottom edge of hub edge.
Part # = 54410-08100
Part Description = SHOE,BRAKE
Model Count = 3
GT185K 1973 184 GT185 ADVENTURER STREET
TS250-2 1970 246 TS250 SAVAGE DUAL SPORT
TS250 1969 246 TS250 SAVAGE DUAL SPORT

i cant find these brake shoes in any brake catalogue by the way to see what the shoe diameter is and they are NLA genuine suzuki so i dont know what you would do if you had one of those models, i guess you have to get them relined.

anyway im looking for a brake plate that takes 150mm brake shoes. I checked 74 TS 185 and they are 130mm, they same all the way through to the ER models so the plate cant be a modifed early TS item. im sure this must be straight off some bike but i cant pick it yet. Maybe its off a model USA didnt get because im comming to a dead end looking at alpha sports suzuki catalogue. possible its yamaha of kawasaki roadbike  ??? . Im sure its not YZ/IT as they would of had alloy lever pivot arms and not chrome plated, so that tells me its 70's road or trail bike.

looking for something that has 12mm axle, that may narrow down the search.

Id look seriously at the GT185
as Doc says the the early T200 and 305 were all huge hubs. The GT 185 was from memory about that size. if it does be a SGP

hey Leith, where is that twin leader TS250 item? Is it for sale and if so how much? ;) I need one for my '69 as it has a regular TS250 backing plate fitted at present and I'd like the original.
