Deleting posts... why?
« on: February 27, 2009, 09:21:40 pm »
I've just had a read of the 'Camden Show & Shine thread' - a couple of times actually, because it was hard to follow. ???
I now understand the reason is due to some posts having been deleted.
It happens in various threads from time to time which is why I ask...

Editing a post makes some sense but deleting makes a confusing mess.
'The Great Escape' just wouldn't be the same if they DELETED the bike jump scene!

"Why is Steve lying next to a motorbike under that barbed wire??"
Do I have a point?
"Whadaya mean it's too loud?! It's a f*ckin' race bike!! That pipe makes it go louder - and look faster!!"

i think its because people have regrets about what they posted or dont think its really needed anymore

Well,I think it's an acceptable feature. You may contribute a post that could be considered excessively scathing, or unwarranted, that may have been submitted while you have a full head of steam, or may be pissed. So, if you feel remorseful an hour or two later, and feel you may have been harsh, you still have the facility to remove the post, and prevent further aggression or vitriol.
Recently I attacked hard on a post of Ji Gantor's that dumped on Luke 1961, gave him a spray, then later reneged my attack, and removed the post, so that peace could be maintained... so there's a case for it after all. The main thing is, and recently several members have overlooked it, it's really only a discussion, and there's no need for drama.... ;)
Nostalgia's not what it used to be....

I understand the 'heated moment spray', but a "what I meant to say" or a "sorry about that" can smooth things over and bring it back on track.
Well no, not always... but when posts are removed the thread is just plain confusing.
Threads get removed too and that's unfortunate, but for chunks of dialogue to disappear from a 'flowing conversation' makes little sense to what is left behind.

OK, what if a 'post deleted' box were to appear where the deleted post sat?
I'm not trying to make this a big deal, I just think it would tidy things up.
At least the conversation/ debate/ spew would flow as intended and we can identify where a response has been removed.

We'd still be required to 'read between the lines' but at least they're identified and there's a bit of clarity.
Hey Graeme is this possible? Does such a feature exist? No pressure, just wondering...

I'm not sure about that. I don't recall it being an option, but there ARE a lot of options. I'll have a look and see if there is a way to identify when a post has been deleted. I don't mind the feature as sometimes it is good to go back and get rid of something said hastily or whatever.

Nope, couldn't find one... I did find the censored word list though, so any posting the F or C words will be dealt with from now on  ;D

Could the person removing their post possibly just leave a note in the original post area saying post removed and leave it at that, just a thought.   Peter. :)

Perhaps if people feel sufficiently courteous they could edit their post, delete the text and replace with "Post deleted".

No, those words won't disappear, they just get replaced by the words I thought were more suitable. Just try it for yourself. I hope it works cos I haven't tested it to be honest... The way it is supposed to work is I say here's the word, this is what I want inserted instead. So if I set it for "Honda" to be replaced by "nancy-boy's ride", then Hoony and Magoo wouldn't ever post again.
