No dramas if your not sure, just curious as I found the unit I retro'd was a pig to set up.
To be honest Steve I've got no idea of the setup on Jonathons Motobi and Ducati road race bikes. I know they're the internal rotor version but that's where it ends. I'll see what I can come up with.

Good to know you have got the old girl going Steve, I am currently working on a new CDI conversion which uses an early XR flywheel & stator so you can leave the cam cover as is & just remove all the inside bits, I will keep you up todate as we go along.

I hoping to fit this system to the C & J project bike.

Instead of cutting a new key for the pulser rotor I pressed the rotor off and have moved it around to suit the timing. The reason I did this is so that the magnets are closer aligned to the pick up, and because my machinist brother is too busy to cut the key just at the moment..... and I want it now  :) It obviously does not make that much difference as your bike runs with it in the normal position.

What I query, (how important is it etc). Is the timing of the pulse (voltage) from the supply coils down on the crank. I have been trying to think of the theory behind the CDI's and what i think is so long as there is  a voltage being generated for the CDI (capacitor) to discharge then it should'nt matter.
whats your thoughts??? ???

In my mucking around I also discovered that a boyer pick up could be modified to fit behind the standard ignition cover ::). But then your back to a battery again :-\

Good idea Steven I just drilled a new hole in the cam & put the pin to suit, I think your are wright about the charging of the coil as my stator has been move 90 degrees to the old mag position.

and she roared with a 16yr old rider.
The guys had a blast riding all day, as it was capacity racing. :P The shocks gave out by the end of the day on the XL.
Poor old girl is due for an make over.  :(

I have made peace with the chinga ignition.
Based on info from other forum members, and thanks to them. I have spark from a combination of the XL185 CDI unit and XL pulser mounted back on the cam, with a supply to the CDI coming from the chinga rotor and coil The Ignition coil is still chinga. But I get abetter spark from the XL coil
I always had dramas trying to get the chinga pulse coil set up right. Maybe with all my fiddling I broke it..... again.
Anyway a spark is better than Ive had before, so its now time to mount it all up. Proper.
The sight of a couple of little blue flashes at the spark plug when you push the kick start over is sometimes an emotional time. I'm glad I had beer to celebrate.

i'll take credit for that idea and glad it worked out ok,as to using a magnito points coil with cdi it wont last because it's being over driven and that's why you are getting a big fat spark.when you connect up a magnito points coil to a m/cycle ignition tester on the cdi setting they pump out a way fatter fat than on the points setting but run hotter,you'd be better off to run your pe coil you have spare for the tm250.pulser coils are low voltage/current coils and there to trigger the cdi box

VMX247,your'e right to assume it's not necessary to index the rotor on your system as it's just a charge coil setup,it charges the capacitor,the trigger (pulse) tells it when to discharge (ignition timing),
is the std XL250/350 flywheel generator capable of charging XL185/posty CDI's or do i need to change over bottom generators to match?, :P

You need to rewind the the coil to suit a CDI which is what had done on my XL.

cdi's run on 90 to 100 volts AC so dont go grabing wires while its running,i got a nasty boot off a xr200 by touching the chassis earth which wasnt making full contact because some jap on the line didnt take off the paint where the earth terminal bolted on....not enough to kill but had a sore arm for a day
