This will be my new mount for next year scrambles, I was thinking about using a different frame, but I am not sure whether to go down that road.

Finding one to suit is the biggest problem, Husky frames are the best option as the motor fits without having to cut the frame. If it was me I would stay with the old XL frame I raced one to a win in Kiwivmx 2 years ago, just work on getting the weight down, drill axles, replace the steel wheel spacers with alloy, cut all the unneed tags off the frame etc.

Hello, VMX247 can you tell me how you manage to fit an XR400 piston into the XL350 as the gudgen pins on the pistons I have are different diameters. Thanks Neil

Neil
Strange you have a difference. The piston I use is XR400R / TRX400EX - 96 to 06.
I have not had a difference in gudgeon pin diameters.
The XR piston is a bit shorter in crown height than other pistons guys have used but thats all.
Otherwise I can t advise otherwise...... It is a sideport XL?
Cheers
Steven

Thanks Davy, been doing some research, the XR400 piston has a 20mm pin and the XR350r and XL350 pins are 21mm, I will keep you updated. Thanks

I have used the XR piston....it is bigger in the bore but a little shorter in the hieght between the pin and the piston top which leaves it a couple of mm below the top of the bore at TDC.

The extra bore size must nearly make up for the lower piston hieght.

I ground a groove in the top of the piston to replicate the original one for the inlet valve clearance

This setup worked for a couple of years hard racing for me and as far as I know it is still working for its present owner
