I diced with Tony Gunter for a few laps at Mt Kembla at what must have been his first open meeting. I didn't know him from Adam at the time. Don't even know what he was riding. I was on the MX250. He was the talk of the meeting and my racing buddies filled me in when I got back to the pits.
I remember he approached and jumped The Wall better than me but I could close up a few bike lengths on him on the hard packed clay left hander after The Wall. Then there was an off camber section which had a, for me anyway
, difficult dogleg around a tree. He absolutely murdered me through there - probably pulled 4 bike lengths in 8 bike lengths
. To this day I don't know how he was
that much faster than me through there
.
Kept with him most of the rest of the lap but he edged away. Probably superior fitness
. He was probably 17, I was about 24.
