Hi Guys I am restoring a 1982 Maico 250 GS and I have bought a HPI ignition from chippy and the rotor weighs only 310 grams there is an additional rotor you can purchase at 300 grams so with this added to the other rotor is 600 g which is still 400 g lighter than the original rotor of 1000 grams
I am concerned about how this will change the characteristics of the motorcycle your thoughts please

It's not only the weight you need to compare it is the how far out from the center the weight is. That means that even if the internal rotor was the same weight it wouldn't have the same flywheel effect as the external with the mass out further from the middle. I haven't ridden a 250GS so I can't comment but I did own a 400GS for many years and with the GS ignition it was so much nicer down low than with an MX Motoplat on it that I took it straight back off and went back to the GS even though I only ever MXed it. Other thing if using the HPI is where to time it as they have a generic advance/retard curve were as the Bosch units have a fixed curve and are timed as if they are points setup.
I guess it will depend on what you are going to do with the bike once restored.

Thanks for your input Sleepy and I have never ridden the bike or owned one before so got nothing to compare it with they had that weight rotor for a reason and I intend to use the 250 for VTR

What is VTR?
You could get an extra heavy weight made up to go on the HPI.
Do you have the Bosch unit? They are quite reliable from my experience with the only issue I've seen is the insulation on the stator wires breaking down but I was able to fix it by soldering new wires in. The connections to the top coil unit need to be clean and tight.
Using the light internal rotor ignition on the pre78 Maico 250 wasn't a big problem as the crankshafts got lighter in 1978 but that doesn't help you.
