Buying off this forum
« on: November 23, 2018, 10:00:47 pm »
What would you expect buying this motor off a forum me
mber if add reads like this

Honda XL350 sideport engine, long term project by now elderly mechanic. 420 big bore kit fitted, head line bored and camshaft bearing by Bert Flood. Electronic ignition, new down pipe. Carb and kick start included. Was to be fitted in a "slider" chassis for dirt track racing.
Any thoughts

well, for a grand,(+ $250 freight) you wouldn't expect the piston to be seized f & R,+25 hi comp STD bore piston, but non seized +50 rings fitted??,old gaskets refitted (stuffed),the "heads linebored" FFS,(when it seized!!),all cam surfaces totally rewelded, even has oil retention "cavities" ,2 brass bearings on original heads centre camshaft journals, but upper rocker cover just replaced with another worn one,CDI "attempted" ,because flogged out head/cams not going to support meaningfull points activation, maybe all that work was done 35yrs ago,but this motor was just flogged into the ground since!!,maybe the recent seller was unaware of motors current condition, but zip on returning phonecalls says otherwise, just saying

i like sellers where they list in the add 2 columns like below for example (Nathan S Does this)

What's good
- bottom end
- piston and bore

Whats needs doing
- paint
- Cracked sprocket cover

then with this in mind, you can ask the questions you need to know that are important before you commit, lessens the chance of disappointment

Exackerly. I politely ask "what are the bikes faults" and if it is expensive "can I check the bore and big end?"
If you love it, lube it.

There is “range” of opinion on what “good condition” is. (For example)
But the huge difference in honesty and integrity in the community dwarfs that range.

Unfortunately, there are people around who think it’s ok to lie cheat and steal.

Based on the description, and with the currently available information, it would appear that the seller of that Honda engine is one of those people.

I would give them chance to explain/compensate and say if you dont reply you will be named and shamed!! If you dont name and shame after chance to resolve you are only "encouraging" that behavior

Mmmm, I see what you mean  though Im sure others see something different.
Communication is everything when you cant see and touch the item yourself. We all know buying a fleabay bike is a huge gamble but thats what we do.
Always ask as many questions as possible like then when and wear and who to help you decide if ts a heap of shit  or a good thing and how much its worth to you.

Again , I tend to agree, that description leads me to believe it is the "current" condition of the item. Perhaps explaining the misunderstanding could produce an amicable outcome.

yes Curtis,Jim & I cogitated over the motor's "viable attributes",& going on the description provided, thought & concluded ok should be a good thing, save us some work/beer coupons as it's already been done (& "fresh") was the thinking,& it was on our forum posted by a forum member ,job done!, it's basically scap,i havn't bothered looking in the bottom,as with most early XL's it's allways the top end that suffers mostly,& this had been addressed,ie slipper bearing, reground cam yadayada, just basically pissed off with the large waste of money,& time ,we cant allways get hands on,you tend to take the sellers word for it,which sadly in this case equals a pinch of cockie shit!
