In USA there is a group of guys who every year? do a big ride on old DT360's and similar Yamahas all fitted out with bigger tanks and touring accessories. You can read all about it on ADV rider forum.

I have done a few descent rides over the past few years on my 1983 XT600X Tenere, which was one of the first big trailies that basically started the adventure touring movement.

Not super vintage but I did Cape York on a 88 NX650..(used dommie) a couple years back. I also have a XT500 that im keen to do a adventure ride on.

I spent years working in the Kimberley with the Gibb River Road as my "Daily Commute" always wanted to go back up there and do it on a old dirt bike....Anyone keen for a ride?

There's an annual dual sport event in the USA that started in 2015 called the Vintage 1000 for pre 1981(?) bikes that looks like fun. Some of the bikes are road bikes with dual sport tyres, and emphasis seems to be on having fun as much as covering the 1000 miles.

Getting a few mates together and doing something similar in Australia does sound cool.

Geez, I guess Dommies are vintage. i did have all good intention of peddling one around Oz but best laid plans and all. Good bike with rubber mounted everything and more than enough grunt to get you into trouble. dont ask. Im stuffed if I know how guys like Toby throw those huge things around.

il bet tobys is a pretty nice bike to ride balance and suspension wise...just dont drop the basket!

Back in the day I guess thats what we did. adventure ride.  Two man tent occy strapped to the front forks under the light and on the guard. Bag of tools. a drum of fuel and a few cans of food all strapped to the rack. We would set off friday afternoon and go as far as we could through the forests and maybe find a petrol station in a small town. I recall Lennie having a can of Finelek  taped to his frame in front of the shock and he is stopped sideways at a fork waiting for an idiot who comes over the hill and slides straight into him. Sticky foam was on everything.

From my efforts on a KLR, fuel seems to be the decider on which roads and trails you can take. Most of the Modern Adventure bikes have  extended range tanks so adapting those to an Old Banger could be an issue. My Dommie had an Acerbis tank .
