Does YZ250J shock fit YZ125J ??
« on: August 29, 2007, 02:38:00 pm »
Guys,

I seem to recall DJ suggesting a spring change from the 125J to the 250J to account for my beer gut.  Does that mean the 250J and 125J shocks are interchangeable??  I know it's a long bow to draw, but I might be able to get hold of a 250 shock and the 125 is buggered - I think all the oil has leaked out >:(.  Would anyone happen to know??

Any advice gladly received.

TIA  ;)

I believe so.
I've got (what I think is) a 125J shock which I'm hoping to put into my 250J.

Will check them out properly if nobody comes back with a proper answer.
The good thing about telling the truth is that you don't have to remember what you said.

YES! YES! YES! YES! THEY DO interchange they share almost every part except springs and damper sub assembly (250 and 490 are the same) When you compare the length of the damper sub assembly between your 125 and 250 shocks if there is not too much between them go for it I say

The harder spring for the YZ125J is the 5X5-22212-10 which is the softer spring for the YZ250J, but the standard spring for the YZ250J after 30yrs of abuse should be spot on.

The J shock will also work on the G but the valving needs a bit of attention or if you can get a softer spring that could work.

Thanks guys - you've done it again. 8)  The guy is going to measure his (shock) and I'll measure mine on the week-end and compare notes.  As you say cyclegod if the lengths are anywher near the same I will go for it.
Nathan, I'm obviously going the other way - 250 into 125.  I could probably do with the harder spring as this beer gut aint gettin' any smaller !! :D

I assume if you can use the 125J in the G you can use it in the H as well.  Solves me another problem  ;)

The J shock will fit in the H yes but check the ride hieght and steering rake. The H swingarm is 20mm longer and the steering rake is the same as the J = 27.5- and I think from memory the J shock is about 8mm longer than the G/H shock so it does have a tendancy to sharpen up the steering, which is good in the G coz its rake is 30. That why I say it would be good to get a softer spring, and the initial compression would be a bit softer too.

No worries - so this is how I see things panning out.  Put the 250J shock in the 125J and the 125J shock (once rebuilt) in the 125H.  The spring on the 125J seems very soft and may well solve the problem you speak of.  What do you think - a plan or what ??

Sounds like a great plan but keep hold of the 125H spring just in case the 125J spring is to hard. It might feel soft in the J because of the linkage set up but in the H it could feel alot different. I have a 125J shock in my 125G and it feel fairly stiff, so its just a bit of trial an error.

One small snag - I don't have the H shock but hopefully that won't ne a big problem.  I will see how I go with the J spring.  Thanks for the constant good advice - much appreciated.

Just be careful when retro fitting a J shock to a mono cross system, not only is the shock longer (higher rear end) but the compresion dampening knob sits above the top shock mount and can cause a problem when trying to refit the tank. >:(
Been there, done that.

Evo550 what bike were you fitting the J shock too? and what happened with the tank, and yeah, on the G/H  models the steering rake will became steeper.
