Frankenstein dirt bikes

G'day viewers, just thought I would ask a question I think of often. What's everybody's point of view on pre 75 dirt bikes made up of bits & pieces kinda like a Frankenstein bike made at home? Would it be a bad thing to take such bikes to CD ? I know lots of people like bling & the best race bikes of the day so I was just wondering. Jimson

Not going to get bling from me buddy. I cant afford bling. What i can afford is bikes i rode back then and they look exactly the same  as they did then. with age creeping up on our bikes and knees , parts are getting more and more difficult to procure so a few adjustments are at times required.  What i do try and do is keep period correct and as close to the original as i can and as close as my wallet will allow. CD isnt about racing anyway, so i cant see a problem if its just an old dirt bike .

There are a few pre75 Frankenbikes around. Mostly sideport XL honda motors shoehorned into Bultaco or Maico frames.
A mate built one up from a previously butchered Bultaco frame. Once he had the motor in place, he had to then rebuild the rear loop and shock mounts as they were totally cactus so in reality, the frame would of been scrap if he didn't find a use for it.

Not sure if the 78 Maico frame is similar to the 77, but a mate put a XL Honda motor in a 77 frame and it required a heap of cutting and shutting to get it to fit....and the XT/TT 500 motor is taller than the XL motor

there was a step by step conversion of putting a 500 thumper motor into a maico frame on the net awhile back but alot of work in doing it, its alot easier to use a husky frame as many have done but dont call it a HL coz it aint

thats only your opinion,seen alot of those "you beaut" non oil pump 4t huskies spit out the big end bearing/cold sieze to know not to touch them with a 10 foot barge pole,funny how the next gen 4t motor HAD a oil pump!2t huskies crack at the back of the cases where the swingarm pivit bolt goes threw but hey their top bikes ask any husky owner

It's better than butchering a Maico rolling chassis.  Putting a different motor in any classic chassis is wrong IMO, unless it is something that happened back in the day.  While common sense dictates that some parts need to change especially for racing reliability making bikes that never existed is wrong.

One of my pet ideas is a GMC 74 Maico frame with a Yamaha SC500 motor . I would use the MX360 5 speed gear set and a YZ 400 D cdi . Just thinking out loud . Iain
