what a great track, can anyone fill me in on its history.
VMX Nirvana.
In the early 1970s a local visionary called Campbell Green convinced the council it would be a good idea to set the place up for MX. Not sure but suspect the horse racing track was built at the same time. Campbell installed the reticulated watering system with pump at creek and tank on big hill and the other facilities we still use now.
The Sunshine Coast MCC has managed the use of the property for as long as I can remember and limits usage to protect the place from overuse.
My connection is from riding 2 day Enduros in the mid 1970s and the start/finish/camping/parc ferme was at Green Park, Conondale. After one particular "Stanley River 2 day", Geoff Eldridge 1978 250KTM and Geoff Udy 1978 PE175 were having a bit of fun racing each other around the MX track at warp speed. I was pretty impressed that Geoff Eldridge could sort of keep up with the Fast Fatso because Geoff Udy was quite a legend locally. Anyway the spectacle came to an end when Geoff Eldridge did a face plant at about 80km/h on the landing ramp of one of the faster jumps. He came up laughing. I have no idea where they got the energy for those hi-jinks after two days of non-stop riding (240km each day) but it has left me with an indelible memory.
If the MX track is wet, don't even bother getting your bike off the trailer as you won't be able to get around the track.
I don't think it is used any more for the MX course, but in the 1970s, we used to ride straight off the front hill towards the road (at the steepest part of the hill). Quite a thrill indeed. Have a look next time you are there.
Yes it is VMX Nirvana.
It's also Twinshock Trials Nirvana. Each year in November the Western Districts Trials Club runs the Classic and Twinshock Masters Trial (and Christmas party) there. The creek is fantastic trials terrain and it is a very popular event.
