re plating a PFR pipe
« on: November 03, 2015, 03:47:02 pm »
Gents - who in Perth is prepared to replate a PFR 2 stroke pipe - some of the majors aren't interested because of the oil in the pipe - although is a very low hour pipe this one so should not have much in it.

And what would you replate with?

thanks

Clean it thoroughly and tell them it's new?!

Find a good plater who can do 'acid zinc-cobalt', bright as nickel if the metal is prepped correctly & excellent corrosion resistance. As for the inside, find some where who can decarbonise it. A lot of aircraft repair facilities do this by using aggressive solvents to remove the carbon type build up & they typically use methylene chloride based products (nasty)

Duplex Nickel is the go if you want the nickel look.
Polishing before plating will give a better finish if you’re making a show queen.
Polish after stripping/cleaning

Platers don’t like secondhand pipes as they can leave contaminants in their tanks that may spoil other work. You can try to bullshit them that it’s clean but if it causes other jobs to stuff up you will have to face them when you pick up your pipe.

Some platers will do a secondhand pipe but they will leave it in their cleaning tanks longer so they will charge accordingly. They may try to fob you off at first as they don’t like these jobs but a bit of pleading may make them fold.

Platers are another dying industry, too many flaming hoops for them to jump through these days.

Platers are another dying industry, too many flaming hoops for them to jump through these days.

Besides industrial hard chrome there are none left in the Illawarra any more.

Would hot tanking clean the pipe out?
