Terry Hay's Shit Treatment
« on: July 28, 2015, 04:02:35 pm »
Hi All. So pissed off that I need to vent. Many times.

Doing a refurb on my IT200L and reading a lot about the benefits of properly tuned suspension coupled with cartridge emulators in shocks and forks.

I bought a set of RaceTech Gold Valve Emulators (well 2 actually, one for the 200L and one for the 250K) and then started looking into spring rates and shock rebuild parts from RacetTech  as well.

I rang the Aussie agent Terry Hay's Shock Treatment in Sydney and spoke with Jan about spring rates and rear shock rebuild parts. This would have been in May this year. Maybe earlier.

I ordered the springs that Jan suggested for forks and shock, even though they were different to the RaceTech calculator values, I ordered a seal head and seals for the shock and the collar to fit the new spring.

All up it would have been between $500-$600 worth of kit plus shipping. I gave my credit card number,  postal detail and mobile number and expected a call when the shock collar arrived.

I rang the next week, "nope shock collar not in yet"

I rang the next week, "nope shock collar not in yet"

I rang the next week, "nope shock collar not in yet, should have a new shipment Thursday"

I rang the next week, "nope shock collar not in yet"

I rang the next week, "nope shock collar not in yet"

Then I thought I should just back off and let them do their thang, so I've left it for a few weeks.

Rang again this arvo and got the "nope shock collar not in yet".

So I said, "maybe I should just go to RaceTech themselves" and the response was "ok, you do that then. But they don’t have stock of the collar either, bye"

The collar is $30 or so. I have lost about 15 cents to the $USD in the exchange rate since this started and they have lost $500-600 worth of sales, except I  have more bikes here needing parts if this is as good as it is supposed to be and here I am on a forum venting about being given the run around.

And I did not receive one phone call in return.

Beware; unless you have a 2015 model whatever, your business is not wanted at Terry Hay's Shit Treatment.

Ah, yes...

Let's just say that the problem is not that you have an old bike, and it's not Terry.

I gave up and started ordering RaceTech bits through my local shop. This has helped, but has certainly not fixed the problem - I'm still waiting for a set of fork springs about two months after ordering them (and it's not an obscure bike or type of spring).

I don't really find Terry a friendly guy at all but I have bought 3 sets of springs from him and he had them in stock. I picked them up. Like I said he is not a friendly guy but had all the racetech stuff in stock and priced right considering exchange rate etc.
I got a few friends so don't really need any buddies so happy to go to shock treatment .
I now use Ross at MCD for shock rebuilds and its worth the money just to have a chat with him . Ross is fu%&n awesome and I make any excuse to give him business as he really loves both modern and the old stuff.
And Nathan I would not be surprised if sos is gone. He did my first vmx bike

Oops and Fred do you have the detail of the shock collar? I can turn one up if it gets you out of trouble ?

Sean at SOS Suspension is definitely still in business and will gladly do your VMX Suspension.
He recently rebuilt an 83 KX500 shock for me and he is very helpful.

First words from Sean - Yes I specialise in this old stuff !!
He had my business from then.... unlike TEKNIK that told me I didnt have a DRZ400 so its going to be expensive and slow....  :o

Sean at SOS - Unit 7, 9-11 Abel Street Penrith South Ph: 02 47325533.

Nathan yes you heard wrong, Sean does his main work at his home, he has a workshop in a factory unit, best to contact him first as he works between his home  and the factory unit, as Hardo  said he is the go to man for VMX supension.

Sean has always been a massive help with odd stuff. Much nicer to deal with than "The dimensions don't matter, just tell me what it is out of" twenty times before relenting and sending what you asked for in the first place....

Best suspension service I've had was with Ballards, went well out of their way to help, and when the young guns couldn't help, Geoff gets on the phone and call outside of business hrs to sort it.

Ha! I'm currently having issues with Shock Treatment ....

I was wanting a touch more low~mid speed compression damping on my '84 Honda CR500 WhitePower shock, I figured that Terry was around in the day, he might see any glaringly obvious issues in the shock, so I sent it up to them.

I could only speak to Grant (is he Terry's son?), many things he spoke of did not agree with things that I had learned over the years, hopefully he knew enough to at least do what I requested.

Well over a month later I get the shock back, I compress the shock without the spring on, it fires-back quite quickly, I think too fast but oh well let's fit it up.  After I've fitted it up, I have a quick bounce on it  ........  hardly ANY compression or rebound damping !!!!!!

Again I could only speak to Grant, he tells me that one of the star-shaped shims may have rotated and uncovered a by-pass orifice when he tightened the nut.  Thanks for paying attention while you worked on my shock !!!!!

A week later I am still waiting.

I haven't found anyone yet that is good with suspension; my next try will be Bruce Linsdell @ BLS, I hear good things about him.

May be a little out of your way JO.. but Russell Speak at Dyno Time in Wangara (WA) is very good with shocks from any era. A Motorcycle mech by trade, worked in the workshop for Mortlocks in WA ( Suzuki distibutor).. current Maico / Beta / Suzuki VMX pilot and travels the county with WA boys to the MX Nationals rounds and keeps on eye on their suspension at the races. I am certain that Russell will understand your requiremnets and be able to sort out your shock.

Sorry to hear that. Grant did my shock for my YZ125K and it works brilliantly.  I did have to send him 3 shocks as he kept rejecting them as the alloy bodies were scored inside.  It did take ages, but when i got it all back, the gold valves, new spring and spacer, valving etc... looked and felt great.  My personal experience was that you have to keep on them or they tend to forget you a bit. Perhaps they are very busy.
Cheers,
Alex
