490 Mega 2 crankshaft seals
« on: July 22, 2014, 10:55:17 am »
Can I change these without major disassembly? Can I use self tappers and a slide hammer to pull them out?

Thanks

The seals come out from the outside so in theory you should be able to.  I haven't done it that way myself. I split the cases.  I found the big-end was wore too, but only on one side and you couldn't feel it with the crank in.  Main bearings are available from bearing service's.  They do have seals to, but they aren't the double lip ones.  Get them from Les at VMX Unlimited.

I have replaced both main seals without splitting the cases. I carefully drilled 2 small holes 180 degrees apart in each seal, inserted sheet metal screws and used my vise grip slide hammer to pop them out working one side then the other.
