Possible Rec Reg coming to NSW

It would be nice to see the rest of the country have the same option for cheap trail bike ownership as we do here in Vic.

I sure hope they grab the opportunity with both hands. Then just maybe QLD may follow suit once they see the revenue rolling in. Would also assist in responsibility for riders being able to be identified if the riders were not doing the right thing.

Hopefully if Dunan Gay is involved something might happen. He succeded in legalising lane splitting in NSW recently, so he seems pro motorcyclist. This rec rego thing for NSW has been bubbling away for years, there was hope with a petition submitted to parliament a few years ago but it appeared to have fizzled away. Fingers crossed the latest push will make it happen.

Part of the problem is that the NSW RMS database/IT system (DRIVES) cannot cope with new forms of rego, so I strongly suspect that we're just going to be strung along.
Adding a new rego is at least a $100k exercise, while the already-well-overdue replacement of DRIVES is a $250M exercise.

So put me in the list labelled "Would love to see it happen, but not optimistic"...

There is already conditional rego available for recreational vehicles on Stockton beach NSW.

I was the Industry rep on the Dept of Premier and Cabinet Working Group that but this together
It sent a NSW Police Inspector to Victoria, I had Suzuki lend him a DRZ and Rhys Griffiths from the FCAI took him to the sites
The Motorcycle Council appear in the ABC story but they have only recent involvement
Anyway the Nationals and Minister Duncan Gay are all over it

in the meantime there always the NSW club plate scheme,certainly cheaper than full rego?,plenty of Vic red plate enduro bikes at broadford at easter,is that different/seperate to their Vic rec rego?,

Love to be wrong.
The rally crowd has been hearing promises and excuses followed by promises and excuses for ten years now. I heard at lot of the same promises and the same excuses floating around on this topic. I've heard Mr Burns talk about it for at least a couple of years now - like Rally rego, its perpetually about to happen "in the next two months".

I'll be as happy as anyone if it gets up, but you'll forgive my scepticism in the meantime...

red plate is only for historic vehicles registered thru a club. bikes cars etc must be 25 years old ( I think that's the cut off) and the owner must be a member of a registered club. the club scrutineer fills out the paperwork and you run into vicroads and run out with a plate and a log book which must be filled out for every ride. less 60 bucks for 45 days riding... or more for 90 days riding. a lot of people are registering 25 y/o cars and using them as daily drivers... so there may be changes soon to limit this.
A lot of "wild imports " are also on the road a fair bit....most likely unroadworthy but "passed" by the "club scrutineer". Lots of new small clubs of half a dozen mates have sprung up since this system has changed from use in club runs only to log book driving. its a great system.

I coild never understand why there was not a multiple bike-car rego put in place years ago.

Pay a bit more for the ctp and a bit less on the rego fees and off you go.

This would surely help the gumbiment acheive their goals of putting people in-on smaller vehicles to commute and give them something to put the family in-on over the weekends.
Many folk cannot afford another rego so the go for the biggest rig that suits them.

you can only use one set of plates at a time and I am sure that the revenue would be welcome

CTP and road maintenance fees goes onto your licence. CTP is calculated on YOUR risk, rather than arbitrary, discriminatory nonsense.

The more you think about it, the more it makes sense.

The reason it won't happen is that us multiple vehicle owners are subsidising the single vehicle owners - the majority of the population would end up paying more, especially the single vehicle families.
(Currently five registered cars and three rego'd bikes between two licences at my house...).

Sounds positive. Still reckon the RMS technical issues need to be addressed before it can become reality.

 Let's hope the scheme gets the go ahead .
   
 There are already forms of   rec & conditional registration in place for certain types of  vehicle use in NSW .
 To my understanding, some adjustments/additions  would be necessary regarding  vehicle  usage  codes /conditions  &  I'm sure some  other details would need to be  addressed  , should  this proposal get the green light . 

   What are the technical issues you see  Nathan ?
