What are the technical issues you see with RMS Nathan ?

I have it directly from someone involved with the maintenance of the NSW RMS' database (DRIVES), that the system cannot cope with any new form of rego.
For a new category of rego to be added, is a huge, and risky under-taking - remembering the data security issues involved in a database that has millions of people's full name, address, licence number, DOB, NoK, and vehicle details...
Apparently DRIVES runs on some long-dead language/operating system, so any re-working is outrageously expensive and must be done very carefully.

Everyone knows that it is well overdue for replacement, but it is a quarter of a billion dollars to do so...

It was literally ten years ago when the new rally car rego was given "approval in principle" by all concerned. It started off well, but then got bogged down - the RTA kept throwing up road blocks. The change of state government brought new hope, including some reshuffles within the RMS. All sounded good for a bit, and then the RMS threw in new road blocks... My source says that there IS (and was) ministerial will to make it happen, but the RMS physically cannot make it happen, so they keep finding excuses. The ministerial will does not extend to $250M to replace DRIVES...

It certainly fits with what I've seen (and I was on the NSW Rally Panel when it was first initiated).

What I think it needs, is for someone to ask the RMS rep, in front of the minister, whether there the RMS' computer system is up to the task. I've suggested this to Mr Burns more than once, but he still seems to be happy to believe the empty promises...

The good thing about telling the truth is that you don't have to remember what you said.

I worked at the RTA when drives was put in place, it had some major bugs in it. I think it was 1992
