Who knows there Honda's
« on: May 27, 2014, 02:03:22 pm »
What is the difference between an XL 185 and a XR 200?
I have looked in the workshop manual and the bore and stroke is the same for both models?

XL185 63 x 57.8
XR200 65 x 57.8    ;) I checked three different sources of the ones I have Slakewell . Cheers Tim754

Ah ha I also have a shop manual that has the same ( I assume ) misprint. Also have a 1mm oversize kit for XL185 in front of me and the box lists it at 64 x 58

Thanks I Mr Honda wouldn't lie to me  ;)
But it dosent seem very hard to bore an XL 185 out to a big bore 200 either?

But it doesn't seem very hard to bore an XL 185 out to a big bore 200 either?   Sssshhhh don't let bag out of the kitty :D

I have two CB750 engines here that have XL185 oversize piston kits fitted, making one about 798cc and the other about 820cc, straight bore outs as the piston pin size,,piston top and skirt depth are the same as CB754 stock. Can use stock size gaskets too :)

You mentioned amount of gears somewhere?

Slakey didn't mention gears Tim,but he did ask the difference between the 2,the 6 cog box is what makes the XR200 motor such a gem ;)

Here's one but it could be a pig in a poke, the crankcases are silver & should be black ;) I.E.,may not be the right motor, the only way is to know for sure is by the  the engine # which should start with  ME04E-********, Plus it sounds like the donk maybe knackered anyway :-\,If you only want a motor remember Honda re released the 2V motor in the XR200 with the uprated chassis in 86 & went through till about 2,000,you may pick one of them up right :) Technically not a vintage motor though ;) http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/HONDA-XR200R-DIRT-BIKE-/331211536897?pt=AU_Motorcycles&hash=item4d1dbefa01&_uhb=1

Here's a late model job http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Honda-XR200-2002-trail-bike-1-950-/271496588908?pt=AU_Motorcycles&hash=item3f36752e6c&_uhb=1

Yep looks like an XL185 motor which was a common swap when the XR motor let go as XL motors were cheap and a straight bolt in.  But did you have a look at the pictures ... the last 2 are backwards (how do you do that ??) so it looks like a RH side drive chain :)

Yep agree definitely has that XL185 look, the Agi-bike CT185 engine was known to end up in XR200's too, not a speed demon..... ::)

    I have an 83 XR 200 6 Speed    I also have an 84  XL 200  5 Speed

Only the later XL 200 had 6 speed boxes for the American market

According to my XL 200 work shop manual
