Thanks heaps for all the input here guys, great listening to everyone's opinions and advice considering the the experience and knowledge those opinions and advice are made up of, well I think I'm gonna change 1 of the pre requisites and not worry about it being a pre78 bike. I'll have limited time to actually ever get out racing so no point buying a bike based on 1 of its uses being only 2, maybe 3 times a year. Soooo I think I've decided that I'm just gonna get hold of the bike I've always thought was pretty much the best looking enduro bike of all time, the bike the I feel has a power delivery and engine that suits me so much better than anything else, I'm just gonna buy what I lust for and keep it at that. 1 bike, 1 beautiful bike! :-*  i would settle for an 82 but I'd be kidding myself to say they're even a shade as pretty as these things, I know a good one don't come cheap and that's cool, I'm in no rush, she'll turn up  :)

I have a 83 one of those in my shed and the owner lets me ride it now and then.
They get real fast real quick and dig really big trenches.
Nice bike.

Brendan, if you get a good one and fall out of love with it
I may know a guy that would look after it?
Don't rule out the 250 if you come across one, also an excellent bike.
If you want a ride at CSC let me know I my be able to sort out something .
It may be a different brand!! Neil

Man up and get a XC500? Really, do want this poor fellow to hurt himself?
I had one that was setup by the guys at Penrith for some A grader in 83 and  Man up is an understatement! Elsewhere I said the 84 Honda CR500 was an Evil hand full but the 500XC was that and more. I have less than fond memories or spearing off a trail in an enduro (No retardation from front brakes)
but
it was the amount and type of power that makes me wish I had one today. Still not pre 78 but one hell of a Evo bike if you can find one I guess.
But I would start Jogging, cycling, weight Training and lots of practice practice practice if you want to be fast on one!

Are they xc / cr legs?? twin leader on that model? ( I cant remember :( :'()

nice bike and just what Mr Rook o 1 needs for his all rounder!!

keep the plastics "usuable," ditch the speedo into a box, cant look at it on one of these, they go too fast!

if you can look ...upgrade to the 500!!

That bike (430 ?) looks to be a  nice example . :)
Looks to have  the  TLS front brake  &  shorter  WR suspension   .

I have the timing slightly retarded on my XC500 ,  tames the power a little  & makes the bike real nice to ride ;D

Sorry guys I should have said that it's a 430WR.
If you look close you can see the deco valve in the head.
The 430 is under the blue sticky tape to confuse the coppers when we are out riding in the forestry :o
Goes like a stabbed rat this one.
Leaves my 85/400WR for dead but handles different.
Front brakes aren't too bad either.

My old 85.5 WR400 had a Husky TLS front brake. It was one of the best front drums I've used - I reckon it was comparable to the Yamaha TLS front, but the Husqvarna one arrived in the disc era and was overlooked.

The good thing about telling the truth is that you don't have to remember what you said.

its weird as some of those husky brakes were shocking. I had a good one on my 240 but ol mates 510 wouldn't even lock the wheel.
